Open Question: Writing a script to download data from web page?

HELP! I need to get the monthly rainfall totals, the monthly mean max temp, and monthly mean min temp maps for all of Australia for as far back as they go. In order to do this currently, I am faced with downloading over 3000 files manually. Not fun at all. I need some program that would allow me to repeatedly download successive files. I do not know enough about programming and can't do this on my own. The steps I would do manually based on changing the file name are: 1) open up http://www.bom.gov.au/web03/ncc/www/awap/temperature/maxave/month/grid/0.05/history/nat/2010060120100630.grid.Z in browser, 2) press down arrow to get it to "save file", 3) press enter, then 4) replace the last part of the file name with the next appropriate date (i.e /2010050120100531.grid.Z) and repeat the steps. I know there has to be a better way than me manually doing it. Thank you in advance for helping to save me from endless monotony. more

I got the whole set of Trinity Blood Drama CD (all the R.A.M.s and those 'sound files' which based on the manga vol. 1-2) and can understand/ guess ~ 70%. That's because most of those dramas ("flight night", "witch hunt", "silent noise", "know faith"...) are following closely the original R.A.M. novels; however, there are parts added in these drama that aren't written in the original novels/manga. Even though these additions are only ~5-20 mins per story, I really want to know what's going on. Right now I'm hoping to get a job as a level designer/scripter for a video game company. What are some things you guys recommend to have in a portfolio? I have some ideas for projects to work on, let me know what would be useful or not. 1) Several custom levels for both single and multiplayer, made using Unreal Editor 3, for various games (Gears of War, Unreal Tournament, etc) 2) Custom RPG game made in C# and SQL. I hope to also be able to write a custom level editor, complete with its own script writer (for scripted events). Hi All. I have just downloaded and installed java- JDK 6. I have also written and saved the 'Hello World' text/script. But when i open start, run, cmd and paste the location of the 'hello world' file it says-- "not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch files." Am i missing a step? The only location of JDK is in program files, and i saved the Hello world text/script to my desktop? Voting Question: How do you make computer programs work on all operating systems?

Am I right when I say that PHP is an opensource scripting language, and therefore, you can't write computer programs in PHP because it won't be able to be used on windows, unless the user has extra software installed? If I'm right... then it must work the same the other way around right? If you write stuff in windows scripting languages... then it probably won't work on Linux right? So, how do developers make it work on everyone's computers? Or... Do they create one for Windows, and one for Linux, and then the user must download the one for their system? Or is there a scripting language that will make it work on all operating systems? more

Resolved Question: Where can I learn PHP and Mysql scripting/programming?

I am 15 years old, I have an interest in programming and web design, I can make websites with dreamweaver etc, and have used html scirpts and things but never actually learned how to do php and mysql, besides knowing how to use it, and use mysql database that i've used for ready made scripts. I always find the websites I want to make, need intermediate to advanced php/mysql programming to make such interfaces like even a simple CMS. Can anyone tell me where to start, it's best to start younger, where can I learn? somewhere on computer at home? Also, someone siggested for me to download wamp which i've had for ages and xampp, I know how to use phpmyadmin etc and things, i've hosted websites and used web servers. In the past days i have come across many kids who haven't even reached script kiddie level and yet they think they can write and compile dvars in the c++ language. Is there a way to download a video from a website onto my Ubuntu Server once a week by writing a script or something? I like revision3 and I wanted to download the episodes once a week, and overwrite last weeks episode. Voting Question: Ads that don't pop-up and other problems?

As write type this all down it's still going on. These ads that don't pop-up anywhere just continuously play over and over. I've recently downloaded an online game called Audition and that's when the problems began. While I play the game in full screen mode it would leave, give me a script error message Line: 49 and such multiple times. Virus maybe? But I'm more concerned about these damned ads playing like background music on my laptop. And yes I've tried blocking ads, downloading Firefox..... Oh look another script error... Line 23 Char 2 Error Syntax error URL http://d.tradex.openx.com/afr.php?zoneid=1101&cb=lkiwe This is driving me more insane than I should already be. Username:guest Password:password But now I want to know how to make it where you need to wait about 20 to 40 seconds before a link appears and you can click it. Sort of like mega upload i tried the folowing  But all that did was make Download Here look a lot and keep looping. Resolved Question: How to Write a Script to auto download video from lynda.com?

i have a subscription to lynda.com but am often on the road or plane and would love to keep the videos with me so that i can view them while traveling. just a heads up i use Mac OS X 10.6. so windows tips wont work for me. anyways I've figured out that if i go to lynda.com and click on a video, then open the ACTIVITY pane i can view all the files loaded for the video page and easily pick out the FLV video file and download it by Option clicking on it to download to my Desktop. unfortunatly this only works one video at a time and to download an entire training seminar is very tedious. whats the best way to either write a script or a plug-in or a application that will: -open all the videos in a current lynda series -download the FLV files -place them in a folder on my desktop from here i usually toss them into VideoMonkey to convert them for viewing on my iPod Touch. thank you in advance! more

Ok ive downloaded xquest which is an old win 95/97 dos Application, now windows xp doesn't like the things it tries to do so im using the dos emulator "dosbox" now i want to write a batch file that will open xquest in the dosbox Application as when you want to run xquest you have to drag the xquest .exe onto the dosbox shortcut on the desktop or go into the Program files if you really want too. This then open xquest in the dosbox emulator, so is there an executable script that can open dosbox and then open xquest in it? more

Hey, all! I'm writing a script in which a woman, Miranda, wants to divorce her husband, Charles, and decides she will file divorce papers without using a lawyer. Miranda and Charles fill out the divorce forms, but Miranda never physically files them, because she is hesitant. After a while, Charles urges her to file the papers, because he's found someone new, and this makes Miranda more determined not to follow through with the divorce. Right now, the plot has it so that Charles ends up downloading and refilling and filing his own divorce forms, before handing an indignant Miranda the papers she is now forced to sign. The questions: 1.) I know this might not be the most realistic of scenarios, but could it happen in California? 2.) I'm participating in Script Frenzy next month, and one of the TV scripts I'm writing is an NCIS spec. I wanted to read some actual scripts from the show, not TRANSCRIPTS actual SCRIPTS. I've looked on Ebay and hollywoodscriptservice, but those are all a little pricey for me, and I'd love it if I could download one to my computer instead of waiting for it to come in the mail. I'm looking for one from recent seasons, like season 4, 5 or 6. Preferably season 7 but somehow I doubt that's going to happen. I've tried a bazillion different websites, with no such luck. Like I said, that's what I'd prefer but at this point any NCIS script will do, as long as it's an actual script and not a transcript, and free or not to expensive. Resolved Question: Fortran openMPI-1.4.1 Installation/Compiling Issues?

I've installed openMPI-1.4.1 on my laptop and I'm trying to compile some fortran code I've written using MPI. I downloaded the openMPI-1.4.1 file from the openMPI website and used the shell script they provide to install it. This is the shell script: shell$ cd openmpi-1.4.1 shell$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local shell$ make all install There was an additional line extracting the tar file, but I did this by hand. The first time I ran this script there was an error on the final stage saying that a directory couldn't be created because of lack of permission. I decided to run the script again this time as a sudo. Having run the script again everything appeared to install properly, however when I went to compile some fairly simple code I got a message saying that the compiler couldn't find MPI. I was using this command: gfortran messages.f90 -o messages I looked on the openMPI website where it recommends compiling with a compiler called mpif. However when I type mpif messages.f90 -o messages I get an error message saying mpif isn't a recognized command. I then decided to look at the mpi files i'd installed and I came across mpi.mod. I decided to try copying this into the same directory as the messages.f90 code I was trying to compile earlier. Having copied the mpi.mod file into the same directory and compiling with gfortran messages.f90 -o messages I get an error saying "undefined reference to 'mpi_init_' " for every instance of a call to MPI. I know that the code works because I compiled it and ran it at an MPI course I attended a week ago. I would be grateful for any help that you can give me, please bear in mind that I'm relatively new to linux and I've done most of my programming in Windows more

I see many many signs, signs that I cant find clear resolution for and I dont know how, why they are there nor do I know what they do and who has taken master control deep enuff to even deny access and trump my admin level. Ive seen hidden ini., inf, exe, dll and several NIC's also hidden and ones I did not actually install setup or have any use for. Mine is a simple basic home computer, and apart from internet access and routine simple use, I feel and I can see when I read and when I look around a little it seems as if the running list of what COULD be done, ie: programs and features that can do advanced things and the built in features that self update, write rules and grant access to actions that range from my simple emails and computing,,, to a far more intricate and advanced access and possibilities that even when I read them, they just sound dangerous, and with each of these type of protocols and abilities comes too an equal amount ofg risk to be exploited.... Why for instance, do I need a network center, and networking capabilities that offer as much potential to do legititimate things as they do the potentiasl , more like the eventuality, of being expoloited. The result is a cascading list of problems that cannot be explianed, yet call for time and attention to fix by sources and software that they themselves carry a risk of further malicious infection. How many online scanners are b.s.?... how many times have a I questioned the integrity of even help files, m.s. updates?... ks articles and advice?... even the list of the top security software, kaspersky, trend micro, avast, avg, norton, ... all them, one by one, have shown that they detected something via a scan at one time or another.... what I cant understand is if, security software detects a action that can or that definitively has the potential for danger, and even registers a risk level that catogorizes it as high or critical danger potential, why the, why the hell would it the show; action taken: permitted??!! If it is detected, and even with the absence of my approval if prompted, the abil;ity to auto apply an action is there, as the choice wasd made to allow or permit such a risk, despite it actually being picked up in detection? Having said all this.... and with offer of apology for the clear vein of ranting mixed in with the purpose of my explanation, which is to paint the picture as best I can about the degree of unexplained and maddening pitfalls that in my case has accrued to a point now where I ask with fingers crossed for help .. how can I cleanse deeply, identify all the shadow, registry, preboot or redirects that I have read can be expected from most rouge programs, policies, scripts, GPO's, changes or duplications... happening in background or via cloaked NIC's and thru giant holes in the codes of most of Micro software ? As I began t say before, as a simple user here at home.... needing the basics of music, palyback of media... not even neding downloads and codecs and this type regularly.... this, as well as basic computing, and the only networking or access in this regard that I need without any doubt is to research online, check webmails, and little else.... So I finally ask 1) given this senario of use, can I get or can I make a pc that has a white list... of those things I know I need rather than the standard that is a pale option buried somehwere , whereby I can BUILD a blacklist of sorts.... those things and places that I do not want , need , or trust in any manner, supposedly in noting these... they will thereafter be blocked alltogether? How can I just have a HOME computer... designed for simpler, uncomplicated usegaer... for a consumer... not one that serves the advanced IT man, as well as claims to support a simple home user just as well. How can I get here? and 2) More crucial is what to do now, having reached a place with this Vista riska... and truely having no means to be certain of what is looming afetr so many and so much compounding issues... how do I salvage my personal content, pics, mostly documents and records... a maybe a video or two... how to backup these wants and be sure that some thread of the infectious stuff has not crept in too? Should I shitcan vista home premium alltogther?... will abandoning IE7 for firefox of other help mitigate these pitfalls?.... I say this.... I welcome all advice asking only that editorials regarding my explanation be held to fair spirited ribbing and not arrogant or abusive stabs... as I know Ive ran on, I know I may just as well typr in caps I am so desperate.... and disappointed ... Voting Question: Windows 7 x 86 is reading as 32 bit? wt.f?

I just installed my x86 copy of windows 7 ultimate. provided free to us Computer science students. However I'm not seeing any options aside from HDD partition management tools. . . and its reading as 32 bit post installation. ( yes I tripple checked. It's the x86 download.) Is there something obvious I'm just missing? I'm running the installer now in case I auto piloted something... When a software engineering student can't get your software to install correctly. I can write TCSH scripts and cold OC 40% for crying outloud..Riiiiiiight its the original name of the 64 bit extension set on AMD chips... which can do 32 bit instruction set... boy how did I mix that up... haha thanks dunno how long it would have taken me to figure that out. ok. my teacher asked us to wrire down a script and here is what he wants: develop a shell script that counts the number of lines in .h and .c files within the Linux kernel source code. This is an example series of steps you may follow to accomplish this task. Feel free to modify or adapt this list at will. 1) Create a test directory structure to use while developing and testing your shell script. The directory structure should have at least a child and a grandchild sub-directories. Within each of the sub-directories and the top directory create two files: a .h and a .c file that have a small known number of lines; for example a Hello World program in C. 2) Use the manual (man) pages for the "find" command and learn how to list all the .h and .c files within a given sub-directory. 3) Use the manual pages to investigate how to count the number of lines within a file using the "wc" command. 4) Now start writing a shell script that uses the find command to find all .c and all .h files within your test data (the directory tree you just created). 5) Add your wc command in order to count the lines within each of the .c and .h files that the find command has reported as being present in your test data. I've written out this lengthy script for a video I'm planning to do. Now, it involves narrating, and a lot of it, but it also involves video clips and images. With iMovie, you can record your voice straight to the video, but it needs to be over certain images within a specific time, and I can't be that specific. I always end up changing something half way through, so that won't work. Should I get another video program, or should I get a program with which to record my voice? I already tried Audacity, but I couldn't get what I recorded to convert into an mp3 (or play anywhere else, even on Audacity). ? more
