my friend is very fond of shopping.. and he shops for the silliest things.. like old swords and axes and things like that to decorate his room with, shoes, clothes, things that he either has plenty of or that he doesn't need... OK, so I have a lease in Morgantown, WV that's going to be up at the end of May 2011, and I've decided several months ago I want to move to San Antonio, TX... I was down there several months ago on vacation and really liked it. Plus, when I compared the Cost of Living, several sites had San Antonio cheaper than Morgantown (I couldn't believe it!) Anyway, the only possessions I have worth taking are my laptop, iPhone, clothes and linens, a box of DVDs, a small box of books, an air mattress (which I have a feeling will come in handy at first), a TV, DVD player, PS2, and a few other small (yet sentimental) possessions. Everything is going into my car (an 01 4 dr Saturn SL1) My questions are... How soon should I look for an apartment/job? I was thinking 6 months in advance, start apartment hunting by making phone calls and taking a week off to go down there and check them out... and about 1-3 months in advance of job hunting. I don't mind working odd jobs at first. How much should I save? Since I am "traveling light", I plan on saving anywhere from $3K-$5K (target $4K) to move... you know, in case I can't find a job when I first get there (what an economy! woo!) My fiance and I just got engaged this past weekend. I am so excited b/c he is a wonderful person and want to share the news but am somewhat self-conscious of my ring. It's beautiful and I adore it but quite a bit larger than average for our area (Midwest) and I don't want to feel like I am showing off. I dont want my friends looking prettier than me etc (although i dont try to make them look ugly or anything by telling them to buy ugly clothes). I am very emotional...but at the same time i can be a little cruel and cold. The story of the bailout is all over the news. Our tax money is going to be used to prop up a business that is failing. Circuit City has declared bankruptcy, why isn't the government bailing them out? GM and Chrysler are big union shops. The union leadership overwhelmingly supported Obama's presidental bid. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are leading the charge to buy stock in these companies. My question is - Is the bailout money repayment for them helping get Obama elected? The big 3 auto makers only have themselves to blame for their problems. The UAW contracts and pensions are only a symptom, the real problem is that they manufacturer a poor quality product. I have been looking to purchase a new car, so I purchase the Consumer Reports used car buying guide. I purchase this book to see the repair history of a model that I am interested in. In 2003 the big 3 had 9 of 12 vehicles on the least satisfying score card and 0 on the most satisfying list. In 2005, the least satisfying list was dominated by GM and Chrysler and GM was the only US Automaker with 1 car on the most satisfied list. Not one foreign owned auto manufacturer was on 2005 least satisfied list. I bought a Honda CRV yesterday and no one had a bad thing to say about it in over 200 customer reviews. It was a consumer reports best buy. I almost bought a Mazda Tribute, but this was a Ford Escape dressed in Mazda clothing. Repair history and customer reviews were terrible on both vehicles. The Saturn Vue was given a so so review. Chevy Equinox was given a worse than average for repairs. So my view is let the big 3 go into bankruptcy, let them reorganize into a leaner and meaner manufacturing organization, let them get out of the oppressive union contracts, and keep the tax money in Washington. Thoughts? Sad to say it, but the union contracts were a prime reason why there is a problem. Sure management had their part as well. But the UAW is activily pursuing this bailout with congress and the management of these companies.Logan - I wanted to buy a american car, the repair history on them were terrible. I owned several american cars in the 1980's and 1990's, they were in the shop constantly. The Honda I purchased was built / assembled in Liberty Ohio. So are these not considered american jobs? Hi there. I recently turned 16, and a few days after my birthday, got a beautiful car which I love with all my heart. If we aren't even willing to drill in our own land (because of enviornmentalists), why should we expect OPEC to increase THEIR oil production just to meet our needs? Basically, we have two choices. The first one is to continue paying for the overpriced necessity. The second is to start drilling within the US. A month after I got my car I was taking my clothes to the laundromat and the bleach I had in my car leaked onto my carpet. I have a Saturn and when I asked Saturn how much to replace the carpet they told me it would be at least $1100. I found some ideas online including using a marker to color the bleach stain, but it didn't work. Does anyone have any ideas? I've heard about dying, but not sure what kind of dye to get or where to get it. I'm worried it won't match. Does anyone have some advice on pulling a small 4x8 Uhaul trailer 800 miles with a 1998 Saturn SL2? I'm moving from Phoenix, AZ to Oakland CA, which is about a 12-13 hour drive. I'd like to do it all in one trip. I have two motorcycles I need to take with me. I think the car is rated to tow 1000 lbs. I'm the only passenger, but the car will be full of clothes and lighter stuff. Should I attempt this? If I decide to, then I'll certainly install a transmission cooler and I'll do the drive overnight to avoid higher temperatures and to minimize traffic congestion. 3-4 stops for gas, and the rest should be straight and level driving. The Uhaul trailer is already pretty heavy ~650 lbs, and the bikes together total about 700lbs. That exceeds the 1000lbs recommended, but so many others say they pull heavier trailers with no problems. It's a 1.8L engine, 4 cylinder at 99k miles. Will this kill my car, and should I just pull my car with a Uhaul truck? Touching the driver's door to close it, I get a slight static electric shock that is strong enough to make me pull back quickly. I have to use my clothed elbow, my foot or some other way to close the door. Why am I getting this shock? What can I do about it?
