Open Question: Would I pass my Grade 8 ABRSM piano exam?

I took it yesterday. I was very nervous and that affected my scales and 1st piece. I got most of the scales note correct but they were generally shaky due to nerves and made a stumble in the 6th apart which he asked me to repeat. Arpeggios also had a few slips. My 1st piece was shaky and I made a stumble in the middle although I continued on. 2nd piece was so so, with a few slips. 3rd piece was actually good, and examiner seemed to like it - he said thank you very much indeed. My sight reading was thankfully smooth as it was a relatively easy one. My aural - I think I got the cadence right but maybe the first chord wrong. Sight singing seemed ok. I got one of the modulations wrong (i forgot to count backwards). For test D, it was a Bach canon and as soon as i said contrapuntal, he asked me how many voices. I ventured a '3' and then corrected myself '4'. The rest of the answers were ok i think and he seemed in a hurry to end it. Do you think he would fail me for my scales and pieces for the slips and stumbles? And would my good performance for the 3rd piece and sight reading help to leave a good impression? I am so worried that I will fail. more

Or if you have a better suggestion could you give it to me? Thanks! :) more

Open Question: please help!! Parents having problems. :(?

plz read this and help me. ok so my brother has ADD and severe anger problems. He is extremely rude and throws tantrums and threatens to kill me. He has actually beat me up a couple of times. One of his more recent tantrums happened when he got upset over me eating the last piece of pizza. He says it's his and threatens to kill me and chases after me. This is completely wrong. I know somethings wrong. Yet in school he is the popular jock and acts completely different. I am 12 and he is 15. When he does this (on a daily basis) my parents get into fights too. They are now considering a divorce even though they promised me they would never get one. Please how do I prevent them from getting one? :( btw I am very respectful and get straight A's. I am very talented @ the violin, piano, cheerleading, and gymnastics. I have one many competitions. People also consider me gorgeous. He fails his classes and has no talent but he is ok looking. Plz I don't know what to do how can I help thissituation!!! :( more

Elaine was heartbroken and walked out. With William not knowing elizabeth was behind him. elizabeth asked if why did he do that and if why didn't he admitted his true feelings. william replied "because i Love her" ,"Then follow your hearts desire, she loves you william and that's all that matters" said elizabeth. Open Question: How can I read sheet music faster?

So, I've started jazz band in my school, for the piano. I barely have any experience in school music groups, only choir, and then a couple months of orchestra classes that were like 4 years ago. I have a personal piano teacher (for 6 years), and though she is a great one, there are some important components to my music playing that haven't been developed. Today was the first day of band, and I was completely lost. Yeah, it was my first day and I didn't know what to do, but there were so many songs to play, and the chords were pretty difficult, and the notes were hard to see, and I couldn't play anything except for the warm ups. The path I've always gone by is slowly and lazily. I get like, a month to even get a piece to decency, and when starting out I bring the notes to my face, and inspect them, and it probably takes me about 15 minutes to get through a song with plenty of mistakes in it. I couldn't even get the tempo correct today. I literally just sat there. My piano teacher said I would be fine in the future after I talked to him, considering I did well on the warmups, but I don't think he knows that I could only do that part because the pattern was easy, and I didn't actually have to look at the sheet music. I can't take home the sheets, at least not for the first couple of weeks, so I just don't know what to do. Frankly, it's embarrassing, because there are a lot of piano solos, and improv (which i can't do in front of others, at all, but amazingly well at home), and I can't do it. I can't transfer out either. So, how can I read sheet music on the spot? I've tried in the past, it just overwhelms my brain because my eyes want to be in a billion different places, and my fingers as well, and it feels like I'm going to keel over. Especially when the piece is handwritten. i'm in a pickle. more

Open Question: Is my piano teacher too strict?

She is really strict and fierce - I don't just mean firm, but I mean really intimidating. I am really scared of her because she always gets angry at the littlest mistakes. For example, if I make one fingering error, she would immediately make me stop the piece and she will refuse to listen to it for that whole lesson. Or else she'll make me play that part again and again for almost like the whole lesson until it's perfect. Also like for example if it's not loud or soft enough in tempo then she'll hit my fingers down on the keys really hard and stuff. She keeps scolding me even if it's just a small mistake and she really needs it to be perfect - not just finger-perfect but also in emotion and whatever. I'm already 15 and she still manages to make me cry. But the thing is I don't really want to quit or stop her lessons cos she is really good as a teacher - her technique and all are really good and she knows what she's teaching well, but yet she's also like that, so strict and everything. Help!! more

Voting Question: What are some good classical pieces to play on the piano for my level?

I've stopped my lessons years ago and now I'm trying to relearn it. Needless to say, I'm kinda suck at it, lol. I can play Fur Elise by Beethoven so my level is somewhat like that. Anyone knows other classical songs that are more or less of that level? Thanks. ps: I prefer it to not be from Baroque period, not really my cup of tea :) more

Voting Question: Does anyone know where I can find piano music like this?

This instrumental piece is called "All Things Beautiful" composed by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. I am very captivated by the piano playing - especially that wash of notes in the introduction of the song. I was wondering where this style of playing/composing comes from, which composers and musicians I should listen to if I want to head to the origins of this style: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2n48XMbPIc Thanks a lot! I'm dying to listen to more stuff that sounds like this, by musicians other than Nick Cave.*the reason why I put this in the classical section is because Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are classically trained musicians, so I conjectured that the main influence on the composition "All Things Beautiful" is classical music more

Resolved Question: CREATING PIANO COMPOSITIONS?

I have tried and tried to create piano compositions. But for some reason I can never create a decent piece of music. I get my inspiration from classical music, but I just can't seem to create something that is good. I have more than a decade of piano teachings, but I fear it is my lack of music theory that is holding my back. For all those years, I had music theory, so I know about it, but I would always put more focus on learning a piece of music rather than theory. I'm beginning to regret that. I have had to make a few short compositions for a music class in college (I'm a music minor), and they turned out really well and I came up with them really quickly. But, they were meant to be simple pieces for beginner students to learn and play. I can easily make simple pieces, but I would like to make pieces that are harder and some that I could make lyrics to. I was wondering if anyone could give me help/advice with this problem. Should I in depth study theory first or anything else? Should I just get back in front of the piano and work within certain scales until I like something? more

Voting Question: Not-to-hard Piano for beginners (playing for a year), interesting suggestions?

I like learning pieces that are a bit challenging. I've been playing for a year, passed my grade 1 with a merit in March. I play mostly with a pam anderson book, but I've independently learned the following: Most of Yan Tiersen's - Comptine D'une autre ete (got stuck at the right hand fast bit, couldn't coordinate still working on it.) Very beginning of Claude Debussy's - Clair De Lune (Love the song, but only got about 10 bars in using a vid tutorial but went a bit fast for me.) Most of Beethoven's - Fur Elise (Was easy, learned it before taking piano lessons. All I can't do it the left hand in the middle. for about 8 bars, the rest I know well) Gary Jule's Mad World (like this song, and not hard on the piano. Nice to listen to.) Easy version of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata - (really like this piece, wish I knew the more advanced version) Left hand of transcription of Three Days Grace's - Never too late. (Love it on guitar, know the left hand and right hand seperately, hard to coordinate.!) And a couple of others.. My favourite composer is Ludovico Einaudi. Any easy pieces you could recommend to me? I like classical, but it's hard to learn. Does anybody know anything similar to Yann Tiersen's piece? It was really good for me, not too hard to learn, pace was good, sounded fluent. Just failed in the coordination part. Thanks. for any help more

Open Question: So whaddaya think? is this a good plot for a story?

Ok so i'm 12 years old girl and this is my first upcoming novel. this is my idea so far. so this is my plot. it's set in 18th century england i'm not really good with words and spellings so sorry for some misspelled words or anything. Plot:our story begins with a beautiful young girl named elaine winslet a type of girl who always thinks "out of the box" , kindhearted but a little stubborn and also came from a wealthy family who lived in hampshire. she never believed in marriage(back in her time),she didn't like playing the piano but she loved literature, and she didn't believed that women should marry men for money. she had one sister Elizabeth Winslet who was 2 years older than her.they were bestfriends until they grew up. in elaine's childhood(age:12 or 13) she met a young boy who'm she had a crush on. a boy by the name of William hamilton son of the duke of Buckingham, shy serious and anti social they met in a ball in hampshire.Elaine wanted to be Friends with William but William ignored her. But on the other hand,William's brother James Hamilton(same age with william and elaine) was interested in elaine.therefore he make friends with her.after that night Elaine never saw william nor james ever again for they have came back to Buckingham.Although Elaine and James has never forgotten the night they have met. When the Years have passed Elaine James and William had reached the age of 17. William and James came back to hampshire (to do something important) James remembered his childhood friend Elaine, and when he found out that elaine was still in hampshire he looked for her. Soon he found her he introduced himself Elaine remembered him until James always visited Elaine. Soon enough James fell in love with Elaine. While on the other hand William had secret feelings for Elaine, who'm he tried to hide for james is in love with elaine. Elaines Feelings For William never changed, everyday that passes by it only grew stronger and stronger.Elaine never Loved James,Elaine only treated james as a good friend. William Kept his feelings a secret but each day it would be harder for him. until Elizabeth(elaine's sister) was curious about william's feelings, and when she observe him she got the feeling that william also has special feelings for elaine. and when elizabeth told elaine about her thoughts about william's feelings for her. Voting Question: For Pianist Only: Favourite Piano Pieces to play by composers like these?

Beethoven Brahms Chopin Debussy Liszt Rachmaninov Ravel Schubert Schumann Scriabin Please give your favourite pieces by these composers. If you miss a few composers, it's fine. No childish or elementary pieces (eg. Fur Elise) please, though these composers hardly right any of them. more

Resolved Question: Piano piece suggestion?

The answers to my previous question on sonatas wasn't very helpful. I ended up playing Schubert's D960 in B Flat Major, which is a magnificent piece, though overplayed. But when tried out the Hammerklavier 4th movement, the fugue was blasphemous music... if it can be considered music at all. The other three movements are extraordinarily good, but the 4th just ruins it with its tremendous difficulty and "unpleasantness". So can anyone name a few other pieces near the difficulty of the Schubert Sonata in B Flat, or Appassionata, or Waldstein, or a little harder. But NOT something like the Diabelli Variations, which is overly long and boring. I want a piece that sounds good to most people, and I would prefer not a variation, which i find exausting (repetitive). So I think neither a Baroque piece or a 20th century piece is a good choice. Note that I am not playing this for recitals or whatsoever, just for my own enjoyment.I said that the Schubert D960 is a great piece, but it is indeed the most played Schubert sonata, and one of his most mature sonata in style and structure. Also it is one of his few that has some difficulty(far easier than the late Beethovens). This is fact, not opinion. I do love Hammerklavier's 1st, 2nd and 3rd movements, and they are certainly my favourite movements of Beethoven, better than Appassionata and Waldstein by far. However, the 4th movement's fugue, though a monumental work in composing terms, is not a pleasant work for the pianist or the audience. I simply thinks that the sonata's 4th movement isn't even worth the time learning.Of course, I did not say "NO" Baroque or Modern music. If there are great Baroque or Modern pieces, please feel free to add any. It's just that I find modern music too chromatic and dissonant, while Baroque music too formal and rigid. more

Alright so anyways i recorded a piece I wrote for the piano on my ipod touch (it's the only recording device that I own). So I went under the recording app that is built right into the itouch. Try converting the video into a different format with a converter or editing program and then uploading it again." What format do I need to convert it to? I have the program from windows but when i look in the output folder (where the new converted file is said to be) i click on it and it says "This folder is empty" and i am sure that i am looking in the right file!!! Open Question: Looking for something to play on the piano?

I was just wanting to ask if you could help me. I have been for the past while been searching for classical piano music. I would like something that has a good melody maybe different moods, cheerful, sad, nothing that is dull to listen to & Nothing too difficult I am probably at an intermediate level. I mostly like music from the Romantic era though have taken an interest in early 21st century music such as rag time pieces, and I have been looking for something fun to play from the 1920's/1930's..if you can think of anything? So have you any suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Looking for some unique metal?

I want some metal that incorporates instruments you wouldn't normally hear. Not throughout the whole piece, but sporadically at times. Maybe with some flute? Piano solo? Sitar? Violin? Various brass instruments? Something interesting. Do you know of anything? Links would help a lot.No, not symphonic metal. I said sporadically, not throughout the whole piece. more

Voting Question: song suggestions for a trombone or clarient solo with piano accompaniment?

I am looking a for a trombone or B flat clarinet solo piece to perform at this year's high school solo & Ensemble competition. I have been playing for 4 and a half years now, but this is my first time performing at solo ensemble with trombone and second time with clarinet. I like songs that are slow, gentle, and pretty, but at my level for trombone. and i like upbeat swing, jazzy songs for clarinet. does anyone have a suggestion (a song with piano accompaniment is preferred) and maybe a link to a free print out of it? more

Resolved Question: What are some good songs to put on a piano portfolio?

I am starting to do my college applications & there is an option for many schools to add an additional portfolio of any talent so I was thinking about putting together a piano portfolio of songs. I have played for over 12 years & the most recent song I learned was Moonlight Sonata & a few Mozart pieces. Thanks for the help! more

Resolved Question: Could you check my grammer real quick?

When I simply think about the definition of music, the one thing that pops out of my mind is the controlled sound in terms of pitch, rhythm, volume, etc. According to the Cambridge dictionary, music is a pattern of sounds made by musical instruments, singing or computers, or a combination of these, intended to give pleasure to people listening to it. Music classifies as an art, especially auditory art so I think it is crucial to involve sound in order to be music. However, I know there is no a definite definition of music. The one certain thing that I know is being a musician is the progress of defining their own music. I have played piano since when I was 4 years old. Having an ability to play music has made me distinct and special from other people anytime and anywhere. It has always been my pride and satisfaction. I was very shy and passive person who did not quite know how to express my own thoughts or feelings. Music, nonverbal language, enabled me to convey them naturally and even willingly. Music, universal language, enables to communicate with people from all around the world as well. For sure, music includes many meanings more than just a “sound.” Due to its capacity of communication, music has used as one of the most effective therapies in order to heal people who have a mental problem, lack of sociality, self-expression or learning disorder. The emotions and thoughts permeated into the music allow performer and composer to deliver their own naturally. It seems impossible to catch what music is trying to tell. However, I think music is such a spiritual thing that connects and touches the listeners’ unconsciousness through the sound. Music is like clay more than a marble. Clay is such a vulnerable subject matter that could be easily changed, hurt or recreated to completely different shape depending on what kind of person touches whereas the marble is difficult to be manageable due to its solidness. Depending on how proficiently manage the sound also significantly determines the degree of impact the audience can get. The elements that make music great are dissonance, rhythmic variety, and unexpected rest and harmony. Of course, beautiful melody and lovely harmony can make the piece memorable. However, in order to keep the audience’s interest in music, there must be something unique and unpredicted. Breaking musical stereotype can create a breathtaking music by using such as jarring color of sound. This characteristic, uniqueness of sound, opens up much more broader range of what music can be. There is one very experimental piece by John cage called 4’33’’, which makes performer not to play for the entire time of piece but perceive the silent of 4’33’’ as the music. I agree with John cage’s philosophy that everything that makes sound can create the music. Nonetheless, it needs to be controllable or in pattern in order to be separated from what noise is. Music has such a tremendous number of aspects that almost impossible to define as one certain thing. I am still in the progress of establishing my own definition of music but I am truly grateful and blessed to be a musician. I want to learn another level of music that I have never experienced before through this music composition class. more

Voting Question: Any good kpop piano recital pieces?

So I go to a school with a specialized music program and every "music major" has to do a presentation at the beginning of every semester. The school year is about to start up again for me and as a piano major, I need to learn something new (because I haven't touched my piano all summer long.) So I decided something that I could probably pick up fast and actually have interest in. Any suggestions? If so, a link could help as well. PS. I prefer if the melody is easy to learn but make it sound complicated. more

Resolved Question: Some good violin pieces?

Resolved Question: Learning Corelli's Sarabande on piano?

I have obtained the sheet music for this piece (arranged for piano), however, there seem to be 'extra' notes in my transcription which make the left hand section a bit awkward. Having looked at some people performing this on youtube, none of them seem to play it as it is shown in my transcription. Should I be learning/playing this piece note for note regardless or should I be playing my own interpretation of it? more

Resolved Question: I really need help right now...anyone who's good with Women, please help...?

Okay..I may as well just tell you all what's happened/happening. But before I do, I just wanna tell you that I'm not gonna use any names, for personal reasons. Also I'd like to inform you that Myself, and my girlfriend, are both labelled Emo. (1) I'll start off by describing her... She is Sixteen, and has been labelled Emo (as I said before). Before we started dating she was a happy, bubbly, and socialised with her friends alot. When we started dating she had become all quiet, she didn't socialise with her friends as much as she did...she only spoke to them at school. She is learning Guitar, and enjoys Music. She has had a terrible past...her mother had abused her as a child, and is currently living with her adopted parents, as well as 2 younger sisters. (2)Now I'll describe myself... I am Sixteen, very shy and quiet. I rarely socialise with my friends, because in all honesty they live rather far away. I am a multi-instrumentalist (Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboard, Piano, Synthesizer), and I love Music. I could not possibly live without Music. I have also been labeled as Emo, as I used to self-harm. I am absolutely hopeless with Women...I've only ever had 3 girlfriends in my life. (3) Me and her always see eachother. We match perfectly in my opinion.. She says she loves me, and promised never to leave me. In which I promised her the very same. (4) I also feel the need to describe a place named "The Backdoor Music Project", and my opinion about it. Basically it's a live music thing where people go to socialise with friends, and listen to live unsigned bands. PERSONAL OPINION: I hate it. I absolutely hate it there...There's too many people in one room, also (this applies if you're a girl) Guys "come on" to Girls, even Girls who have already got a Boyfriend. I told my girlfriend that I don't want her to go there, but I won't force her...It's her decision. I basically told her my opinion about it, she understood, and promised not to go - unless she went with me (so guys won't try to come onto her). I've been with her for 7months (January-present)... we love each other to pieces, and I'd do anything for her. In June I found out that she was going on holiday to Turkey for the whole summer, and in all honesty, it upset me muchly. I got over it and she's still currently in Turkey (She returns home on Saturday). Today I've spoken to her through MSN, which we occasionally do when she's far away, and what we spoke about made me cry, literally. ->IMPORTANT<- Today I've spoken to her via MSN. I speak to her as I usually do, and she replied as she usually does. As I said she's still currently in Turkey... And she said that this holiday has given her chance to think about life at home. She said that she's gonna completely change the way she is: Socialise with friends more, be more confident, get a job on weekends. I am happy with all of this; I have no problem. But then she said that she's gonna go to The Backdoor Music Project (Look at beginning for details), and my mood immediately changed. I asked her why she wanted to go, in which she replied to simply socialise with friends more... I didn't believe her. For a second, I honestly thought she was gonna go to try to find a new guy to "love". So I kept the "flow" moving, and continued to talk to her...She then noticed that I wasn't happy with the idea...so she asked me what's wrong.. I replied I'm fine.(I wasn't) Moving on a little...I asked her Why she has changed all of a sudden. She replied that Since I've been over here, I've realized that I crave for FUN. We only have One life, so we may as well live it to the max. I then asked her that "As you've changed, has your feelings towards me changed?"....She didn't reply. I asked her Do you still love me? .....again, no reply. I realised.... She finally replied Not Yes, nor No. She also said "I'm unsure if I love you or not. I don't want to hurt you, or make the wrong decision, which is why I haven't given you an answer." She continued "I'm not making any decisions until I get home and make something more of my life with my friends." So overall, She's going to try a new "lifestyle", and see if she still loves me... I agreed to continue the way we were until she returns home. Then onwards, I have to wait until she's made a decision about our future...which is going to be torture. So what I'm trying to ask you...is until she has made a decision, I am asking for your generocity and kindness, to give me advice to try to "win" her back over and make her decide to love me again. I really love this girl...you wouldn't understand how much she means to me. I have sacrificed absolutely loads to be with her, and I never regr more

Resolved Question: Any new or deep piano music?

So, I started taking piano lessons for about the past 15 weeks at school...I have a really strong passion for piano, these are the pieces I can play: 1) Yann Tiersen - Comptine D'un Autre Ete 2) Yann Tiersen - Le Matin 3) Yann Tiersen - Mother 4) Yann Tiersen - Summer 78 5) Bach - Cello Suite No.1 (The Piano Version of it) 6) Bach - Prelude in C Major 7) Beethoven - Fur Elise (but only half of it, I'm working on the hard bit) 8) Hayley William ft. B.O.B - Airplanes 9) Mike Posner - Cooler than me 10) Lady GaGa - Telephone 11) Kesha- Tik Tok So, I last saw my piano teacher at school and I was hoping when I get back from the holidays, I could show him some new pieces I learn't. Some of the pieces, only for practice, like the pop songs... I dont usually like to play them. I was getting bored with Yann Tiersen because he doesn't seem to be composing anymore and the classicals are really hard but I still enjoy them. I am currently thinking of playing Chopin - Nocture op.9-2 but I think that its going to be really hard for me so I was hoping I could get some suggestions on modern piano pieces, some classical too but I would prefer deep/sad/mystic modern. PS. I only have 2-3 weeks left for school and I already know Clint Mansell and Philip Glass. Please Note that I have difficulty reading notes but I can manage to read them easily if there is a pattern. more

Resolved Question: Looking for the name of a pretty up-tempo, lively piece of piano music...?

I understand it's hard to explain music via words, that's the beauty of it really, but if you have any idea what it may be then please give it a go. Up-tempo, lively, happy, i don't think any words, mostly just one riff over and over again, lots of grace notes all together in almost a short slide down the keyboard, i'm sure it's been used in adverts at points... jeez this is hard. let's see what you guys can come up with though, thanks :) more

Resolved Question: Where can I find software to let me hear my MIDI keyboard?

I have a MIDI piano keyboard, that used to be hooked up to my old PC. I had a piece of software on there (can't remember the name) that basically let me hear the keyboard, and I could choose from all of the MIDI instruments. It was a small freeware program I think. Try as I may, I cannot find software to do this anymore. I don't want a sequencer, or anything like that. All I want to do is be able to play my MIDI keyboard so I can hear it through the speakers, and change the MIDI instrument if I want. Where can I find software to do this? more

Voting Question: Piano sight-reading HELP!?

I have my trinity guildhall grade 7 piano exam on Sep 30th and my pieces and scales are coming along pretty well, my only real insecurity is my sight-reading. I bought the Trinity Guidhall sight reading practice for grades 6-8 and found that grade 6 sightreading i could do pretty well, maybe 5-8 out of 10, but grade 7 is pretty difficult for me, esp the 4 flats and sharps. Any suggestions on how to improve it? Is it better to play harder (sight-reading) pieces very slow but accurately or at regular speed ignoring the mistakes? or the same with easy pieces? more
