moreOpen Question: i play awful durin piano lessons?
ok so i'm in grade 10 rcm piano right now, and i've been learning with my current teacher for 2 years.
i've never been able to play a single piece well in front of him before, seriously. i'm always so out of it during piano lessons and make mistakes i never ever usually make, and it sounds like i'm sightreading the pieces! and also there's something stopping me, psychologically, from *trying* to play the best i can... like i would rather play the piece terribly than ok. =/
ok, i'm not extremely good at piano, but the difference between how i play during lessons and how i play anywhere else is HUGE. like if i played like that during my exams i would probably fail them.
for my grade 8 & 9 exams I got 90 and 87 and i could tell by the look of his face when he found out that he was super surprised. and during recitals, almost everyone gets to play 2 pieces, but i only get to play 1 short piece. friends who have him as a piano teacher tell me that he pushes them to go to piano competitions and all, but i've only been to one festivall, and that was because i asked about it.
don't get me wrong though, my piano teacher is a good teacher and he teaches me a lot and encourages me to me interested in music... it's not my teacher really -- it's me, and i don't know what to do. i'm frustrated,i have piano this wed, help?
also i forgot to mention, i'm actually slightly obsessed with piano . . . yea .

moreOpen Question: Was Mozart a very mathematical man?
Was Mozart a very mathematical man?
I was just wondering.
Andrass Schiff mentioned in his lectures that with Mozart, you have to find the Golden Mean, play it any way else and its wrong. He also said that Mozart is not a generous composer ( correct me if I am wrong, but I think the is generous in terms of interpretation and dynamics?? ), whereas Haydn and Beethoven are both very generous composers. Beethoven goes to heaven, Mozart comes from heaven.
I also came across some articles online that tells us how Mozart divides his Piano Sonatas using the " Golden Section " mathematical formula, that is Primary theme using the first 38 bars, and the Development and recapitulation for the remaining bars to make it 100.This is the closest ratio to the perfect Symetry in the Sonata form.
The Golden mean, according to Leopold Mozart, was the middle path of life that most artists like Mozart never (or couldn't have ) had in his life. By this , could Leopold have meant the subtle shadings of his dynamics that you wouldn't find (extremities in forte and piano, say in the works of Haydn and Beethoven?) or the fact that Mozart piano sonatas are symetrically divided according to the Golden Section formula?
I am more artistically and musically inclined rather than mathematically inclined,I tend to make a lot of careless mistakes in math.
My previous piano teacher made me play a lot of Mozart and I hated it, not because its difficult to play, but because I couldn't bring out the Mozartian feel no matter how hard I try and Also, I tend to make a lot of careless mistakes.Once or twice, I scored low marks in my previous piano exams because I lost a lot of marks playing the Mozart. She insisted that I play Mozart because it is technically easier than other works.
Doesn't it seem strange how something so easy can yet be so difficult?
My new piano teacher said that I would do better with Haydn or Beethoven. And I agree, since I think Mozart was very mathematically inclined but I am not mathematically inclined, which is why I tend to mess it up?
Even My examiner commented that I play Bach better than Mozart.
My mother said she thinks I would do better with pieces and other composers that provide more room for more dreamy, artistic depth, and musical interpretation, rather than follow the rules (i.e 2+2 = 4 , etc). She said that I am a dreamy person from the time I was very young.
And I have always wanted to play Chopin but still haven't got the chance to do so.
What do you think? Did Mozart mathematical? Did he use a mathematical ( safe " middle path" approach in his melodies? Or did Mozart use a mathematical formula in his anatomy of the Sonata form?Mozart was a very operatic man as well, and one of my professors mentioned that Mozart is the master of repetition.
Do you Think the repetition is like a mathematical formula in the entire equation?

moreResolved Question: Piano performances?? Not Optional..........?
Well, I'm 14 and I played the piano when I was 5 until I was 7. Then I completely stopped because we had to move away. I sold the piano then never started again. Last summer in August (2009), I wanted to start again for some reason. It just came to me. So I did. It was 5 months ago then. After 7 years, I forgot EVERYTHING except the middle C.
Now I just found out that my piano teacher has 24 students. She teaches piano for a living. Every April, we have to perform a piece in front of audiences in a concert hall. Not just for fun, we have to dress up in nice blck dresses and tuxedos. it's a serious matter. There are like 8 year olds that are like level 10 when I totally, completely suck and I'm 14!! I'm twice as tall as they are. The performance is not optional. I have to go. How am I going to go up there and play something like Mary had a Little Lamb when a 8 year old just played Fur Elise or Turkish March? It's only like 3 months ago and I'm already freaking out. I know I shouldn't have stopped when I was young.....I don't want to quit Piano either. I know I'm being all stupid and selfish but I can't get over the fact that I have to go up there and throw my pride away. Please give me some suggestions?

moreOpen Question: Who influenced Beethoven the most on the piano?
I've come across sources saying that Beethoven respected the sonatas of Muzio Clementi above Mozart and other contemporaries. And upon reading this, I listened to Beethoven sonata 1 and convinced myself that the correlation between Beethoven and Clementi was clear. But, having recently explored the Mozart sonatas and listening to a CD of Beethoven sonatas 5-8, the relation between the two is lucid. I've heard some say Beethoven idolized Mozart and others indicate that he admired his work but preferred others or something along those lines(that was a simplification). Also, he must have to an extent been influenced by Haydn, so I'm wondering where he fits in, perhaps in the eccentricity and abruptness of some of his pieces? Also, do you know if historically, Beethoven was influenced by the crazy eccentricity of C.P.E. Bach's keyboard works, or does he just happen to have a similar knack for ingenuity(I heard some C.P.E. lately and have been really impressed)?
So, Mozart? Clementi? Haydn?

Even though I do play the piano, and have been for a while, I'm really confused on how you would find the key signature of a piece by looking at the number of sharps/flats before each line. moreResolved Question: A good baroque piano piece for me?

moreOpen Question: How am I supposed to get a sound out of a brand new violin?
Just this week I bought a Gliga III violin, I've never played violin before and though my experience with a variety of other instruments would have left me with enough intuition to teach myself, turns out i was pretty wrong. I can't get a single sound out of it.
I have no idea how to set it up - though the bridge is already on, so I don't need to worry about that atleast - and have a few questions about setting it up
-How taut / tight should the strings be? I will tune them to a piano, I just don't know how tight I should get them or how tight I can safely get them.
-How do I use the tuning mechanisms on a violin? It has large ivory tuning pegs like a guitar, and smaller ones on the piece below the bridge that I cannot really feel doing anything when I turn them.
-How tight should my bow be?
With those questions aside, if it isn't one of those factors that is causing me to be unable to get a single sound out of my violin then I would love to know what is.
Many thanks in advance, all help is greatly appreciated.
moreOpen Question: High school audition help?
Every year my high school has a show called Rock n Roll in which people perform rock songs from past decades. The band and the singers are all students, and auditioning for the band is VERY competitive. I play piano and being a freshman and not that experienced did not audition this year knowing i wouldn't get in. It was good that I didn't because I know a person in my Piano class who is extremely good who plays level 8+ pieces and she didn't get in which surprised everyone. Piano is also the most competitive instrument in auditioning and there aren't many slots. Currently I am Level 5 in Piano but for my audition piece that I would like to play is the Mozart-Volodos Turkish March. Yes it's a very big jump from where I am know but I know that would wow the judges and ensure my spot in next years show. Along with playing that piece the judges also give us a Rock song to play. The auditions are held in November and the show happens in March which gives me loads of time to prepare for next years shows audition this November. I'm also in a Piano class at school that gives me 50 minutes of practice time each day. I am going to work on harder pieces once i'm finished with the one i'm currently on and plan to start working on the Mozart-Volodos Turkish March by schools end. It's obvious I won't have the entire piece done by November so I'll have to find a stopping point. But i want you to be honest and tell me if i'm moving to fast or possibly give me another audition piece to work on.
Here's a link to the audition piece: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1fgo7hp-Ko

moreOpen Question: Why does my sheet music have a key signature for B-sharp but there is not a single B note in the entire peice?
Im just learning to play piano and ive got a simplified version of capriccio espagnol (arranged by maragret goldston, and there is not a single B in either the base or trebble lines. I found a similar marking in another song where it is given a B-Sharp, but every B in the song has been marked with either a flat or natural sign which means there is not a single B-Sharp in the song....
I think it just must mean something that I dont know, but my book doesnt say anything about it, only that if it appears you play the note in the song as sharp or flat, and as written if otherwise.
Unless the lady that arranged these pieces just likes screwing with us n00bs heads like some kind of sadistic musical monster. :-( help?

Whenever I hear the opening of the second movement of Beethovens 4th symphony, I am reminded of Ombra Mai Fu.

Beethovens second piano sonata ALWAYS reminds me of the overture to Paisiellos Barber of Seville.

moreResolved Question: Is she arrogant or insecure?
I have a friend in orchestra whose a pretty good musician, and I used to have a lot of respect for her until last year when she started showing off a lot and bragging about certain things. Such as making qualifications for music festivals, or getting a high evaluation score on her solos, or even guys that just creep on her. Another friend and I are debating right now whether she is arrogant and has an inflated ego or if shes just putting up a facade and shes just really insecure and stupid.
What she does:
- Constantly talks about the blow jobs shes given to this guy.
- Plays obnoxiously on an uptempo piece when the dynamic is piano
- Plays some random fiddling tune while everyone else is tuning
- Plucks her instrument while our conductor is talking
- Tells me, and the other players in our section, about her $50 an hour teacher and how amazing the teacher is
- Tells us one week that she ABSOLUTELY hates this guy that's texting her and that likes her, then the next week when he writes her a song she says she LOVES him, but then she'll tell us again she hates him
- She tried to psych me out of doing All-State by implying that I couldn't afford an accompanist and that I didn't have the skill level
- She constantly picks fights with a singer (the singer is very talented and humble) in our music theory class
- She brags relentlessly about track (we're also on the track team together)
I've lately taken up the idea of silent vengeance, for example, I've had a professonal mentor since last May, and went to a few workshops over the summer, but I haven't told her either of these things.
So what do you think? Why does she brag?Is she insecure or just plain egotistical? I don't even know what to do about her anymore, many of her friends including myself have told her why we've become so distant, and she says she'll change but she refuses.

"Hope And Heartbreak"
Everyone has their walls
and to our dismay,
at some point in time
they all have to fall someday
Living in a world
drowning in dismal disgrace
forsaking all in need
even i, too, am part of the greed
Breaking down and falling to the ground
its a part of everyday life
wanting to come alive
but its so hard to find that drive
for every heartbreak
for every heart and soul
bruised in battle
for every resistance
for every person willing
to walk the distance
for every hate
for every fate
at the end of the road
lies a piece of hope and heartbreak
