Open Question: Inception: What would your totem be?

In the movie Inception 3 of them have totems. Mine would be a Ring and on the inner side of the ring will be engraved numbers, lets say the numbers were 2992, and when i take it off and the numbers are not the same... then am in a dream. Cobb has the spinner, When in a dream it does not stop spinning. Arthur's is loaded die (dice) witch has a weight inside that makes always land on a certain number all the time. lets say the number was 6, so when he rolls it in a dream, it would not land on a six therefor knowing he is dreaming. Ariadne's is a Bishop chess piece, am not to sure what it does but i think she put a weight inside, and in a dream she would pick it up and feel if it weigh like it normally does, if not then she knows shes dreaming. WHAT WOULD YOUR TOTEM BE! =D more

Resolved Question: Will you be disappointed if the gods simply pull the plug on the planet .... no stage show just game reset?

You know the chess game is over when your looking at your 3 pieces and his 8 are all the good ones Game reset --- A quick little ice age --- or a massive bang of methane gas which has been conjectured to have happened billions of years ago --- This planet has created and destroyed many a landscape and climate that has always supported life in some manner or another And then it has just ended --- heat cold explosions changes in the air due to gas release or volcanic ash or or or --- Dinasours and deserts and undersea life --- simply changes after the mass extinction The chain of life is rebuilt every now and then on Earth Will you be disappointed if the earth just turns OFF for a moment in order to rebuild the food chain -- YOUR TURN is over -- another building block in a different climate under a different atmosphere and so on will begin taking possibly billions of years to mature into something with a civilization we would recognize from our time and place upon the cycles of the earth Will you be disappointed when your god doesn't get to play out the script you were promised so long ago --- if the planet just presses reset prior to any savior ? Resolved Question: What is the largest recorded number of chess pieces involved in a checkmate move?

i was playing chess on the computer and i managed to perform checkmate using 6 pieces. whilst i doubt very much this is the most you can use, i can only ever remember achieving checkmate with 2, 3 or 4 pieces. ive tried looking to see if there are any records for the number of pieces used in a checkmate simply because i'm interested and I've never thought about it before... more

Resolved Question: PLEASE HELP!! I have to teach chess to little kids?

I'm 13, and my chess rating is relatively high, 1900+ USCF even though i havent been playing in a while. I need to teach little kids chess, who are around 4 to 6 years old. The daycare manager said that these are the smarter kids out of her daycare. The daycare manager is my mom's friend, and I know her son pretty well, who is 22. I teach for 15 bucks an hour. I am not a very good teacher, but I try my best to get the kids motivated. So basically, I teach two groups, each for about one hour or less. Each group has 8 students. However, today was already the third session for both groups and the only thing they know is chess notation (identifying squares, a-h, 1-8), which pieces are which, and some know how the pawn moves, and like 2 people know how the rook moves. This might seem like decent progress for little kids, and it is. However, it seems that it is getting very hard to continue, because the children are not listening to me as much. I have tried giving them candy for rewards, but things got too messy. I'm trying to be a nice and fun teacher, and I have never yelled at them except for today when no matter how loud I said, "Everyone please sit down," no one even bothered to look in my direction. I have made them laugh before by doing "funny" things by stacking pieces on top each other so high until they toppled, and making weird faces, etc. Still, no one wants to listen to my lecture, even though they are normally very short. Also they keep playing with the chess pieces and knocking them over with other pieces, and stealing "each others" pieces. I have told them multiple times that it doesnt matter who stole whos pieces, because we were going to play later, but none of them listen. They are all too distracted with other things like playing with their friends, or staring off into space, even when I tell them to listen. Even still, they keep complaining, "I WANT TO PLAY CHESS!" So today we were playing the "pawn game" where only pawns are used, and one side would win if they got it to the other side of the board. One kid even threw a tantrum and just yelled out, "I DONT KNOW HOW TO PLAY CHESS!!!!" Inside I was thinking "wow i told you how to move this piece twenty times (literally, twenty times) and each of them was explained in a different way!" but I told her that she could do it and i started step by step with her, one-on-one. She still kept moving her pawn sideways and diagonally 4 squares, etc. I know this is a lot of writing, but can someone please help me? I want these kids to succeed, and this was actually the daycare I grew up at. It can sometimes be very fun, but its also very frustrating when they dont listen.or am I expecting too much out of these kids? more

Resolved Question: Critique my little excerpt? (I promise it's not long and winding and I at least find it interesting:)?

She sat leaning back in her seat, legs crossed, arms folded tightly across her chest, with a smug smile that grew wider by the second. “What’s taking you so long?” She murmured, though she knew exactly the answer. He scowled as frustrated fingers ran frenziedly through his hair so it stuck up in every direction. “Shut up,” he growled, “besides, it’s just a stupid game anyway.” Languidly, she inclined her head and wound a finger through one of the many stray strands of her tightly coiled hair. Her smile was absolutely feral now – like a predator that had cornered its poor, defenseless prey. Perfect, she thought. There it was – his declaration of defeat. Her victory was now absolute. Though she had felt certain of it before the game had even begun, the actualization of the fact made it even sweeter. She relished the feeling it gave her – the feeling of power, of superiority. Inwardly, she grinned. There was just nothing better than that. She glanced back at the scowling boy, and bit down on her thumb in thought. Or...perhaps there was something even better. “Are you just going to sit there?” He grumbled, obviously still irritated by his defeat. Instead of replying, she stood up and leaned across the table over the chess pieces, ignoring the noisy clatter of two white pawns and a black queen hitting the floor. “Everett,” she murmured, fixing him with him a coy smile. Yes, there was something better than just the gratification that came along with winning: the tormenting and complete exploitation of the loser. He gulped, struggling to remain apathetic, but his body, in an act sheer treason, brought him unconsciously forward. She smirked. It was all really too easy. Silly boy, he never did learn. Shouldn’t he know by now that she was never to be trusted? Did he think for once she actually had something good in mind, something mutually benefitting for anyone other than herself? ---Anyway I'm experiencikng soem writers block, but I have a vague idea where I want this to go. The Words just don't seem to be flowing right. BTW critique as you like, I would deeply appreciate it :) more

Resolved Question: What is the correct rule in chess regarding pawns?

When you get a pawn to the other end of the board it becomes another piece, normally a queen. my question is can you turn a pawn into a queen if your queen hasn't been captured yet, giving you 2 queens on the board at once, or do you have to choose a different piece if you still have your original queen on the board more

Resolved Question: How can I become a master in chess?

Voting Question: How do I convince my mum to get a new computer?

Hello, my mum has recently inherited a large sum of money and she said i could have 3G but she said I'm not allowed to spend it on electrical stuff (really frustrating as the only thing that i find interesting is electrical stuff). Anyway I want to build up a computer because my current one is a 1.6GHz 512MB piece of shit P4 with parts from the new Millenium. She thinks it is just going to be something that will just pass on. I really need and want a new one that doesn't freaking lag all the time and i can play decent games on, not Pacman and Battle Chess (not implying that they are not good games). Please help as she is quite stubborn with this subject and she wants to spend it on cloths and bed stuff.... boring.... HELP! i thought i could fake that my current computer has died and i need a new one, if i have to do this, how would i make it pretty convincing (could disconnect the live wires to the power supply and solder it to the voltage selector switch and put a capacitor in series with it to make the bang when i throw the switch). I am skilled in the way of electronics and electrical safety so don't worry about my safety :P P.S I live in NZ btw more

Voting Question: seaching for a strategy-only game?

well i was wondering, i am searching for a game to play on pc. what i am searching for is for a strategy game but pure strategy and tactics. i mean, i like to play games like starcraft and warcraft but they need a lot of skill at managing your troops as that may be the key of victory. also i dont like puzzle games where puzzles have a specific way to be solve and usually you end up just trying whatever. i would be searching for some kind of turn-based strategy game. i tried civilization 4 but really you have so much to take in account (politics, economics, war, cities...) that you end up pressing random buttons that doesnt seem to affect you. i want something more simple maybe just war-oriented like chess (but not a chess game of couse) where you move your pieces and there are many ways to beat the oponent. something where you really have to predict what your oponent is doing and counter that... more

Resolved Question: When did the names for each square of the chess board change ?

I'm learning to play chess and my new book names individual squares on the chess board by files a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h and ranks 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 so the first most left white side square is "a1". In an old chess book from 1960 the squares are named by the piece file and No# rank, so the first most left white square is "QR1" from whites' perspective but the same square is "QR8" from blacks' perspective. When was the system changed to be what is used today ? more

Resolved Question: Best title for my novel; please help?

Good greetings to all of the staff, people and contributor here in Yahoo Answers. I have a question I have to ask you if you could recommend a title for my new novel that I am working on. I was asking for your suggestions because I can't think of a better one that suits the novel. Let me tell the plot of my novel; Rook Kazuki went to Sweden together with his friend Mark Angelo Walsh in order to join the chess competition. After the competition was finished, Mark Angelo got the second place while Rook Kazuki for the first place. Because of their talent in chess, one of the grand masters of Chess, Hansel Mortensson, invited them to stay for a while in his Blue Mansion as a token of appreciation and as a bonus prize. Hansel promised them to love the mansion since all they need for a vacation is almost there. Since Rook and Mark has nothing to do back on Japan, they decided to go. As the two stays on the Blue Mansion, Hansel's secretary was murdered inside his room. He was stabbed by a knife that pinched the secretary's heart. Rook believed it was a murder but the problem is it was a locked room. Mark Angelo Walsh reported it to the police. Two of the policemen stayed to guard the house but in the next day, the two policemen were found dead in the gate of the mansion hanged upside down. The cause of death is hard strikes from a golf bat. In the crime scene were found two bloody golf balls. Hansel was so afraid that he might be the next victim. Because of Rook and Mark Angelo's feeling of pity towards the grand master, they promised to investigate the case and someday catch the criminal. It was as fast as the light, Hansel's second daugther, Elena Mortensson, was found missing. In her room was a chessboard where chess pieces were placed in the chessboard. Rook believed it was a message for them to decode...whether a name of the criminal or the next victim of the criminal. ----- After they solved the case in the Blue Mansion, Rook returned to Japan. His father is a private detective and he helped him in some of his cases. He was welcomed by his father with a party because he had just won two competitions, the chess and the crime solving. Mark Angelo Walsh, invited Hansel's first daughter, Jenny to go with him in Japan to see the beautiful spots there especially Mount Fuji. he was shot in the leg by an unknown shooter. The shooter burns the house and placed a timed explosive inside. The shooter escaped just in time before the police comes. Janrae tries to rise up and avoid the timed explosive. The shooter, inside his car detonates the bomb through his controller and left. One day when Rook goes home, he found his father murdered inside their house. Before he could search the whole house, a mysterious shooter shots him in his leg. The shooter placed a timed explosive inside as he burns the house with gas.The shooter leaves the burning house and escaped through his car. Before Rook was able to stand and get away from the explosion, the bomb explodes. Some of Rook's neighbors was able to save him that time. He was saved from the explosion but he was badly hurt by the fire and by the explosion the bomb created. After he recovers, he and his only relative doctor, Doctor Robert Appleby, wants to know who the shooter is and the purpose of killing Rook's father. Knight Matsushima, Rook's close friend at the same time, in his yacht, was attacked by mysterious men and splashed him with acid in his face. after that, they placed bomb inside his yacht and escaped. Before the explosion, Knight manages to escape but right portion of his face was burned from the acid. He wears a mask to hide his right portion of his face. As Rook investigates the death of his father and Knight searching for the mysterious men, they ran into many cases that the police can not solve, leaving them solving the cases together. Would they find the mysterious men? Will Rook find out the murderer? Thank you....that's my novel and if you could recommend a nice title, I greatly appreciate it. At first, I entitled it "The Circle" or "Detective Circle" but if you could recommend a better one, thanks. more

Resolved Question: Can you please evaluate my statement of purpose? It takes time to read..?

Hi I am a foreign Dentist applying for DDS in USA.This is my personal statement.I want some suggestions from you.Which paragraph do you find interesting and which needs to be improved? Thank you all. Having a medical background in family, my magnetism towards health profession was obvious. Since upbringing days, I have perceived health care wholeheartedly and I feel amazed how it helps patients to cure their problems. Two questions always baffled me - Why do people get into health problems and what is the best way to keep human lives happy? A truly desire to intricate artistic work in order to widen horizons of the field prospects is one of the essential characteristic of Dentistry and I have been encouraging to craft some creative art pieces with own hands ever since I was a child. Discussing with family, I could conclude that one of the best way to please people is to make them smile and as a result, my desire to pursue Dentistry makes sense to me. I am a young dynamic gentleman born and raised in India. I pursued ‘Bachelor of Dental Surgery’ from M.P. Dental College located in Vadodara, India. During college, my interest continued to grow as I engaged deeply in subject knowledge. Active participation in survey projects, research, conferences, seminars and group discussions remarkably fostered my professional skills. During a two day workshop on ‘Oral Health Care and HIV/AIDS’ held at our college , I met Dr. Jeffery Hill, an instructor in the department of Comprehensive Dentistry at the University of Alabama. He provided great insight into health education in the USA. That day I fully realized the value of obtaining U.S. dental school education. As a part of coursework, I had the privilege of serving in an internship position for one year. While serving as an intern in college, I worked at numerous free dental camps for rural population, among different cultures and languages, in which, I realized the potentially holistic approach to serve society in order to improve their oral hygiene. Acknowledging detrimental effects of smoking and chewing tobacco with the intention of inducing patients to maintain dental health was my primary crusade. To glimpse Dentistry in USA, I spent several weeks actively acquiring valuable work experience at two dental offices. I was offered the opportunity to shadow Dr. Nikunj M. Raiyani, a general dentist, for a month. It was a valuable experience and provided me with a further insight into day-to-day dental management. Shadowing Dr. Dennis L. Gorospe, who is an oral & maxillofacial surgeon, permitted me to observe a better office settings than the one I was used to. Along with clinical experience it provided me an opportunity to connect with patients from diverse ages and social backgrounds effectively. This experience has further reinforced my desire to apply for the program specially designed for foreign graduate dentists. In my spare time, I read Dental articles so as to keep myself updated with recent advancements and technological developments in Dentistry. I like to play badminton and especially chess. I was one of the top three chess players of my college. It helps me to stay calm in stressful circumstances. Looking to the future I would love to own my own dental practice. I am sure the program offered by your school is the best choice that will not only sharpen the skills already acquired through prior education but also widen my horizon with new skills and techniques. The USA offers excellent education and state-of-the-art-facilities and I would be delighted to study in such an environment. more

Resolved Question: Dream Interpretation: Sitting in front of and facing a mirror, while playing chess?

That's pretty much the only part of the dream I remember, as it was the strangest. I was in a big comfy, very plush, red chair that faced an old fashioned vanity mirror. It was my turn, but I couldn't figure out which piece to move, so I just fidgeted with them instead. I am a twin, so I was thinking that might have to do with it. Xp I hate chess though and I couldn't play to save my life.I should mention she's not too keen on the board game either.Haha, I doubt it has anything to do with sex. more

Resolved Question: Do the personalities on Chessmaster 10 play too easily?

I have never studied chess in depth; though I have been playing since a very early age. I am 22 now and play quite infrequently. The problem is that when I play various Chessmaster personalities, often at fairly high rankings (1800-2300), they seem to make terrible mistakes. They frequently hang pawns, or leave themselves in a position where after a trade, I can take the pawn that captured my piece, leaving me up a pawn. They often allow me to trade a piece, and then subsequently their pawns are doubled. Now, I of course would like to believe that I am in real life capable of beating someone ranked 2300, but alas, I DON'T EVEN HAVE A USCF RATING! Is this an internal error with the game? Is it simply a bug in my game? Or, were the folks at Ubisoft unable to accurately represent the play at these various levels?Unfortunately, I did not specify enough. When I say the program allows me to take extra pieces, I meant that there was no compensation involved. I simply went up a piece and had nothing to lose. Also a commenter remarked that I should play on and finish the games. I thought this would have been made obvious, by the very fact that I am posting, but again, I am able to beat players as high as 2300 (I have done so on multiple occasions, despite not playing regularly) on the Chessmaster game. And in real life, I highly doubt that this is a possibility. There was even one occasion where I almost beat a player ranked 2700. I had a forced win, but blundered. Again, I would love to believe that I am good enough to compete with GMs, but I find this skeptical. I imagine if I had a USCF rating, I would probably be around 1500 at MAX!!! more

Voting Question: How specifically does prayer work out?

Let's say someone is out of work and desperately needs a job so they pray and get it. How specifically does this work out? Does God use his powers to get inside the supervisor's mind and tell them to hire that person? What about free will? Since God is omniscient, he knows exactly how hard he would have to try in order for that person to get the job. If the boss doesn't listen, this means God intentionally didn't try hard enough. Essentially, the boss would be like a chess piece that in this context to accomplish the request in the prayer. How do you personally think this all works out? Thank you for your answers. more

Resolved Question: Chess,I prefer speed chess over traditional chess?

Some of the answers to my first question on chess was quite good.Is the pawn your most next powerful piece besides the king?I was looking for yes,in the end game if both of you are equal in getting to the end game.A couple of contributers were answering the question I was looking for, since I was wondering if any of you seen the movie, that was rwy180 opening gambit move.I had to be a gentleman and submit to a loss. Is it dirty chess in the end game if you only had your king and queen, and I had only king and pawn.I wouldn't promote my pawn, just to make it a stale mate? Interested in your comments on your thoughts about speed chess or traditional chess. This will be a community vote this time because their will be a lot of right answers. My bad,the question should be,Do you like speed chess or traditional chess.I like speed chess at times to pick up the pace.looks like I'm going to have to edit alot on this one,did I get myself in a blunder? I'm speaking of a friendly game between friends not competion play.Speed chess is each of you kinda set a time limit after you make a move say 30 seconds or a minute.End game doesn't mean end of game. For the dirty chess question,I will wait on that one maybe someone will answer it for you.Can I cheat and ask another question, here?well here goes,i see there are over 6,000 answers out there how i'm i to read so many??Ok to William B,speed chess is not real chess.Just incase I don't recieve the dirty chess moves,if you can make it to the end game,if your a pro you could have seen it comming 5 or 10 moves ahead of time, and acceptted defeat then.Thank You all for your help. That is why I play speed chess,my weakness can't see to far ahead in moves, stay in defense to long, and get nailed. more

Resolved Question: Any good free chess server?

I've played about a hundred of games or so on Yahoo! chess, and it has pissed me off so many times that I can't bear it anymore. I've played a hacker before where he could keep playing regardless of his timer, several people who afk for an hour just waiting for me to resign, and have seen way too many people who afk in rooms. There have been several times where one of my games have their pieces reset on a game I've already played (I start another game and they both get glitched), and way too many times it froze, not to mention the spammers who want people to look at their webcam. Is there any chess server that is simple (not too many ads or unnecessary things that will make my poor 256 MB computer freeze), free of glitches, free of pop-ups, free as in cost, and has an adequate amount of players, solid players, and anti-cheating software/no hackers? A friendly community also won't hurt, and if a server is missing any of these things, it's fine; just make sure there's not too many flaws. Oh yes, I am using Windows 7. Downloading is not a problem unless the file is greater than 100MB. more

Resolved Question: a question for pool (snooker) lovers.....?

I only know snooker or pool or billiards (don't even know if they are any different) through some online games so I don't have a lot of information. My questions is that if there is a way in which a player controls opponent's game? What I mean to say is: A very skilled player starts the game and manages to put in all of them, it doesn't mean that the opponent sucks? Maybe if opponent got a chance, he would have done the same thing. I don't know if I should compare it to chess. In chess, you place your pieces in a way so your opponent can not attack you but how do we control our opponent's game in pool? Thank you in advance and I apologize if it's a stupid question.I just realized that I have a lot of grammatic errors....Please, don't mind those :P more

Resolved Question: what can I buy to use as a chess base?

Im going to make a chess set, but I need to find something to use as the base of the pieces. Ive tried looking on ebay for things like pre cut dowel but no luck. I could care less if the things I need are mini coasters or craft beads. I need something with a flat base and a flat top that are sold in quantity. Best answer will be given to someone who can tell me a object that can be used to make the set thats on ebay.Base of the PIECES, thankyou. :] more

Resolved Question: In chess, if you were to assign a number-value to each piece, what would it be?

Say a pawn is 1, how much for each of the other pieces, based on its strength ? .Yeah, Blah. I'd certainly give the king a low value, less than a pawn even. But a king, especially near the end of a game, is still useful. I think I'd give it a 0.5 value. more

Resolved Question: Is debating creationists on the topic of evolution rather like trying to play chess with a pigeon?

"Debating creationists on the topic of evolution is rather like trying to play chess with a pigeon — it knocks the pieces over, craps on the board, and flies back to its flock to claim victory" I have found this to be the truest thing i have ever heard. Eg. Me: There is overwhelming evidence for evolution. Him: There are no transitional fossils!!!1!!!one!!! Me: No, there are many transitional fossils. Not all organisms have this because a lot of mammals don't form fossils at all, but for almost all fossilisable (made up word) organisms there are transitional fossils. Him: Liar Me: No i am not lying Him: Well if evolution is true then why are there still apes? Me: We did not evolve from apes. The early great apes (we are great apes) split off in 2 separate paths, one leading to humans and one leading to monkeys. And even if it were true that we evolved from monkeys that still wouldn't be a valid argument. Animals adapt to fit their environment, if monkeys stay in the trees and are perfectly adapted they won't change. Him: That makes no sense Me: That makes perfect sense to anybody with the will/brains to understand it Him: Well if evolution is true why are we here? Did life just appear? Me: No, that's abiogenesis, not evolution you are refuting (badly). Evolution deals with the how different types of animal came into being. It does not deal with how life first started. Him: How come you never see bears give birth to whales if evolution is true? Me: It doesn't work like that at all. That is a total basterdisation strawman of evolution. Him: Your stupid Me: Oh irony... Him: Whats irony mean? Me: It is a word meaning... Him: Hey guys i won the debate easily! He started talking in french because he was out of arguments because i epicly pwn'd him! His freinds: Yeah that guy was an idiot. Evolution violates the second law of termotinamiks! Me: Why do i even bother..In retrospect i do think that the author of that quote SHOULD apologise for likening pigeons' chess-playing skills to creationists' arguments. I'm sure there are many pigeons that are deeply offended.Josh: You are not doing anything to repeal that stereotype. You do not know what racism means! Racism is when you treat a person differently because of their race. Not because of their scientific (or psuedoscientific) beliefs. You are an idiot.PARTYMAR: That is the worst analogy i have ever heard. I would look at a beautiful house and go "that must have been the result of a couple of years of construction. This is supported by the evidence that I SAW PHOTOS OF CONSTRUCTION WORKERS WORKING HERE. It did not just appear".Smarty McFly: I wouldn't mind debating you. When did i mention atheism at all? When did i mention religion? I am insulting creationists, not christians. There is a big difference. So stop calling me a "stupid atheist". My evidence for transitional fossils IS BASED ON THE FACT THAT THERE HAVE BEEN TRANSITIONAL FOSSILS FOUND, and the ones that haven't is because it has been proven that these organisms don't fossilise well. Josh: Sorry i misread your first statement. I thought you said "That sir is blatant racism." sorry. BUT i do not know anybody who has had a debate with a creationist that wasn't like this. This is because there are no arguments for creationism that are legitimate. I agree with what you said about racism, but this is different. This is categorising people based on actions or beliefs, but all races are the same. Would you say all people who think the earth is flat are ignorant? Ignorant in that area anyway? Yes you would. Creationism = flat earth-ism. more

Resolved Question: Promotional pieces in chess ?

Hi . . . i'm learning how to play chess. With it being a major tactical part of the game to get pawns promoted, I wonder why a chess set doesn't come with extra pieces for pawn promotion. Are there any chess sets that come with extra pieces ? Can you order in extra pieces if you want doubles or do you have to buy a whole full set of chessmen ? What do you normally do ? Thanks for your time G. more

Resolved Question: If you are good at Checker.......?

For AP Computer Science I have to program the game checkers. I have made a 2 player game but want to program Computer AI. The Question: What is a decent strategy for a COMPUTER to beat the user in chess? TAKE INTO ACCOUNT: -A computer can calculate thousands of moves per second. I just need to know a strategy. FOR EXAMPLE: here is a basic strategy; 1. Have the computer look for any double jumps 2.Have the computer look for any single jumps. 3. Look for jumps using Kings that does not get King in danger. 4. Look for steps that does not make moved piece vulnerable 5. If it has not found a piece that qualifies, then just look for valid move. I am looking for something a little more complex than this. more

Resolved Question: How to build interest in 4D chess?

Lately I've been thinking a lot about playing 4d chess (i.e. move along: x, y, z axis plus time)...i've found many discussions on various websites with many variations on theoretical rules, boards, etc...however, the general response seems to be that it would be too complicated...i'm quite interested in 4d chess and would love to interact with others that are as well...i'm not a computer programmer or anything like that, so i wouldn't be able to do any of that stuff, but if a group of us could agree upon and establish all of the rules, etc...then maybe we could have someone build it and try to get others involved as well...my basic idea was three full size chess boards stacked where the pieces all begin on the middle board in their normal starting positions (beginner game)...for the 4th dimension (time), players could time-out pieces that would reappear later...the time move would be considered the player's move for that turn, however when the piece were to reappear the player would still be able to move that one, or another piece as part of their turn...also, if the square where the piece were to reappear, were to be now occupied by another piece, the the reappearing piece would capture the enemy piece...it should be noted that at the time a player were to choose their "reappear spot" it could not be, at that time, occupied by another piece...if playing on a real chess board, players would be required to write down their "reappear spot" on a paper to be displayed at the time of the reappearance...another variation would be to allow pawns to eat other pieces along the z axis as well as their conventional method...the z axis could be used in conjunction with the regular forwards/backwards move, where the player would only be allowed to jump from one board to another at a time, but could avoid being blocked by another piece in doing so...however, they could not move, for example, down one level to avoid being blocked and then in the same turn move back up to the original plane....anyways, these are just some ideas...i'd love to hear more from others about laying down official rules and trying to build interest in 4d chess more

Resolved Question: What do you think of this dream?

Last night I had an unusually vivid dream. Usually I forget these things quickly after waking up, but I can remember almost every detail of this one and definitely the images I saw. It seemed, I don't know, like something I needed to remember. I was wondering if anyone could offer any insight to it or tell me what you think of it. In the dream we are visiting a fenced in cemetery on a hillside surrounded by rolling hills. A road curves around the bottom of this particular hill. Trees crest the hill and appear quite often on the surrounding land. It's summer so there are a lot of leaves. I'm taking pictures of tombstones and there are many interesting ones. Some are in rows and shaped like horses heads (like knight chess pieces) and they are wearing armor. Another large monument has a carving of a man and woman gazing into each others faces, hands clasped together with the moon and some tree branches overhead both this and the horses are pinkish in color. I don't recall if i read the name of the person or not, but i called someone over to look at it, possibly my niece or mother. Next we go into a little building inside the fence of the cemetery. Inside are long wooden tables and benches that look like they have just been made and have not yet been sanded down. I touch them while my mother talks about my late grandfather making them. I remember the texture of the wood very vividly and in the dream was thinking about whether I'd get splinters from it. Suddenly we are preparing to eat lunch in this little building. My allergies begin acting up and I want to blow my nose so I go into the bathroom, which is slightly removed from the rest of the building. My brother follows me saying he needs to use the bathroom. I grab a handful of toilet paper and wait next to the door. As I'm standing there I can hear someone whispering very close to me, but can't tell what they are saying. I think it was a woman's voice. The whole time i'm wiping at my face and I suddenly realize that the toilet paper isn't working very well. I look at it to see it's not toilet paper, but a roll of white garbage bags. Annoyed, I turn to go back to the table. When I do my other brother and his wife are sitting there. Behind them are standing a man and a woman. They are looking at me in a non-hostile way. They are probably in their fifties or early sixties and dressed in clothes that made me think of the styles of the early 1900's. The woman had brown hair that was pulled up and the man was graying, with a close cut gray beard. I don't remember what they were wearing, exactly, just that she had a dress with a collar and he was in something dark blue. Upon seeing them I heard the voice again, still unable to understand but knowing they were trying to say something to me. I woke up at this point with an odd feeling, like I was disappointed that I couldn't hear what they were telling me. Usually when I dream of spirits or ghosts (if that's what they were supposed to be) I get freaked out. This dream affected me entirely differently and I've spent all day thinking about it. I wonder, is my subconscious trying to tell me something? Also, I was left with a vague idea that the woman was connected to the building we were in, perhaps as its owner. more

Resolved Question: Chess and the Gambling Laws?

I was reading and I found interesting points: Gambling Laws only apply to games of Chance. Chess is a game of Skill. Gaming Regulations and Laws do not apply to games of skill such as Chess and Backgammon and some other games. Therefore, could I legally begin an underground business of: Me and another person challenging one another for cash. I bet between $100 to $500, maybe even $1,000 if I get really good, and the other person bets the same. We give the envelop to a third party, we are all searched for weapons before playing, I have some bookies (with firearms to ensure no one tries anything if they lose, and the other contestant and I both pay the security to ensure the security doesn't try to steal the winnings on the winner). Would this be legal? By the legal definitions of gambling, it would make me immune from any gambling and racketeering charges since it is not gambling. It is like 2 people who determine the outcome based on skill, similar to a War where both opponents have an equal chance of winning where the winner is determined by the strategy, tactic, and skill they each possess. So I think it would be completely legal form of betting without being under the legal definition of gambling.. Am I right or am I wong? If I were to engage in such an underground business, and I got caught by law enforcement after being reported, would there be anything I could be charged with, seeing it doesn't fall under the legal definition of gambling? Also, no casinos offer chess which further proves it isn't gambling, because if it were, casinos would be offering chess at gaming tables, which they don't. That is because chess is a game of pure skill. There is no luck involved in winning chess. I wasn't being totally followed in the prior question I asked. Sports betting isn't a matter of just skill as others stated. Sports betting is also a game of luck. Sports have the possibility a key player will be injured, sports can be rigged, players or teams can cheat (either with steroids or because of faulty referees), it is a physical game, the teams have verifiable better athletes (or may have paid for better atheles). Therefore, Sports betting can be justifiable illegal to be on. What I was getting at is One Game. Me and another are playing. I wager $200, they wager $200. We play one another to determine who gets $400. In sports betting, there are multiple betters on a game between 2 different parties. It is easy to rig sports betting. Chess can't be rigged if there are two individuals playing one another, no one else is betting, and both sides have an equal amount of pieces and the pieces hold equal value. Therefore, unlike sports, chess is pure skill. The pieces don't get tired out nor do the people. Strategy and tactic come from the mind, so the only way one would become physical tired out and the mind is resilient, especially when one has something to lose. more

Resolved Question: Anyone Have Any Ideas For These Party Themes?

I'm turning 14 next month and I'm still stuck on a party theme. I'm tied between: -Alice in Wonderland -Pokemon (I'm Asian, and a PokeNerd :P) -Twilight (But some of my guests aren't THAT into Twilight so I need to make it subtle) -Neon -Magic/Whimsical (But with a rock/scene feeling) I only have a few ideas for each theme: Alice in Wonderland: -Sticking your hand in a Mad Hatter hat and go crazy with whatever. Haha. -Hide the Golden Key. One person leaves the room and becomes “Alice”. The rest stands in a line and have their hands behind their back. One person is holding the designated “golden key” while the rest hides the other keys. “Alice” comes back in and goes down the line to face each person, one-by-one, to see if he/she can find any clues (smile, avoiding eye contact, nervousness, etc.) as to who has the key. When the right person is guessed, that person then becomes “Alice”. -Putting out confusing signs like "Tea Party is this way!" and "Don't NOT go this way!" and stuff like that. -Play Almost Alice soundtrack Pokemon: -Decorating the invitations with Pokemon features like Pikachu ears/tail, Butterfree antennae/wings, Marill ears/tail, etc. Twilight: -Creating centerpieces with Parrot Tulips, apples, red ribbon, and red and white chess pieces -Red drinks to emphasize on the blood -Play Twilight soundtrack -Some game that has to do with James being a tracker (any ideas on how to make that a game?) Neon: None at all. Any ideas? Magic/Whimsical: -Just a bunch of black, pink and white Also, I found these awesome ideas: -Play Balloon Truth or Dare. People write truth and dare questions on a card and put them in a balloon. Blow it up, and someone pops a random balloon. They either choose to do the truth or dare on the card. -Capture the Ninja. Played in the dark. Same concept as capture the flag, but the ninja, who wears a bandana, is the flag. The players have to find the ninja in the dark and bring them to the other side. -Personalized invitations instead of the Pokemon ones. I drew all my friends as chibis with animal features. Like for one of my friends, I drew her as a rabbit. I could put rabbit ears/tail on the invitation. OR I could combine an idea from each theme and make it a Randomness Party! But first I need ideas for each theme. Help? PLEASE AND THANK YOU!!!It's during the day, and I'm not just going to stick to whatever I have planned. If we run out of things to do, I could ask my friends if they had any ideas for games and stuff, and I wouldn't be playing just the soundtracks. more
