Voting Question: TC's, what are some reading suggestions you highly reccommend?
I'm looking for recommendations for books that are not neccessarily specific to the martial arts styles or histories; more so philosophy, strategy, and things that can only be liberally considered tied into martial arts in some way.
I'm an autodiadact. I have flexible plans (meaning no set time-line goals) to finish out a Psych/Business Bachelor's degree (only 2 semesters left), a Masters in Education and Divinity, and then (if I'm still alive) a PhD. in either Philosophy or Theology. (or Asskickery if I can convince any accredited college to create the degree). In spite of these humble educational aspirations; I am at heart a martial artist through and through and view academics as something of a hobby and for entertainment.
At a young age I fully embraced the spirit of Bushido without understanding the actual history or culture behind it. I cannot find the source from where I got the idea, but I read something that said to study "Pen, Sword, Chess, Book, Brush, and Flute" to become a complete enlightened human (or whatever). Sword = martial arts, Book = scholar/academics, Brush = art, Chess = Strategy, Flute = Music, and Pen = Literature/poetry. So, under that general guidance I've focused my life on studying . . .
Martial Arts = The best I can find in my travel radius according to the level of instruction and quality.
Academics = Philosophy, Theology, Business, Finance, and Psychology
Art = Pen/Ink drawing
Strategy = Military & Combat strategy, Business strategy, and Video Games (don't laugh, jerks, they are strategic)
Music = Accoustic/Electric Rhythm Guitar & Drums
Pen (Literature/Poetry) -- Haikyu, Shakespear, Maya Angelou, Emily Dickenson, "The Classics", Charles Dickenson, and whatever I feel like reading on a whim (I speed read at the effective pace of one novel every 3 days if I actually dedicate time to reading).
I'm not trying to brag. I have a pretty humble/difficult/annoying life. I'm a delivery driver and ware-house manager for a very small company. I have achieved nothing spectacular and have no ambition to do so. I regularly advise my step-son, youth and young-adults, and generally anyone tries to romanticize what I do to not follow in my footsteps.
I'm sorry all this was so pendantic, but I want reading suggestions from the Top Contributers for anything that has had a deep impact on their lives from the common perspective of martial artists. I felt it necessary to give this much back story for the intended audience to understand what I am asking.
My personal recommended reading list is as follows:: Confucius - "Analects", Plato - (All his works), Dietrich Bonhoeffer (all his works), Sun Tzu - "Art of War", Miyamoto Musashi - "Book of Five Rings", Dan Millman - "Way of the Peacefull Warrior", Richard Bach - "Jonathan Livingston Seagull", Lao Tzu - "Tao Te Ching"... and more, much more, but those are big ones directly related to Martial Arts in my opinion.
Please, do suggest some books that you feel are deeply vital for Martial Artists. Thank you.ADDED:: If you are not a top contributor, but feel you have a suggestion that merits attention, please give it. Especially Yamarsakar, Raging Patriot, Kajukat, and. . . Cab!Added:: And Lorenzo, if he's still around.@Possum -- Regarding Theology; the individual intricacies of spirituality are so complex and convoluted on an intuitive and emotional level that it's, in my opinion, irresponsible to suggest reading such as The Bible, Torah, Koran, etc... I believe it requires far more personal and deep interaction to give any reading references for spiritual purposes.Added::
This is what I've found through Barnes and Nobles, so far. . .

http://my.barnesandnoble.com/Sean-Carrigans-WishList/cm/4368625/Added::
I went ahead and got Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Siddartha, Machiavelli "Art of War", and Book of Five Rings in eBook format for my B&N Nook.
I love my Nook.BTW:: I haven't thumbs downed any of these answers. I don't know who has or why they've bothered.
moreResolved Question: Fritz12 chess program question?
I bought Fritz12 yesterday and I cannot figure out who to get it to run my games so I can analyze them. They are PGN files.
I've looked both on the internet and in the instruction booklet and both seem to reference an old user interface or something because the things they tell you to do don't seem to even be there.
All I want is a way to take the pgn files that I download from the chess website I play on and put that into fritz and analyze the game. I have no idea how to do that. Any advice would be appreciated!

moreResolved Question: What kind of college should I apply to?
I have been trying to find an answer to the situation I'm in for awhile. I left home at 16. I was legally emancipated when I was 17 (I am now 19). I was forced to drop out of high school my sophomore year, but I finished my education on my own, I got a diploma (NOT a GED) from my local adult education, and graduated with the rest of my would-be class (actually, a little bit earlier). I have held two full time jobs over the past few years, supported myself, and shown natural aptitude in motivation and self-sufficiency. I have since reconciled with my family, and moved back in with them. Things are going well. I was able to trade my full-time job for a part-time one, and I am currently enrolled in a community college. I would like to transfer after I receive my associates degree. I am majoring in Liberal Arts and Sciences, as this major has the most credits which would be likely to transfer to another university. My current GPA is around a 3.5, my school has limited extracurriculars (3 official clubs), but , I joined Journalism Club. I'm still in my Freshman year, but i'm beginning to explore four year universities. I have never taken SA Ts, but I was told I probably wouldn't need them with an associates degree. My councilor has suggested to me some high-ranking schools (such as Wesleyan University, NYU, UPenn, Syracuse, and Northeastern). She seems to think that these schools may value me as coming from a "different" kind of academic background, and because I was successful on my own terms, not because of some over-bearing parent nudging me towards an Ivy League education. She told me my initiative and independence, as well as holding a full-time job and completing school, would look good in an admissions essay. Also, (I'm not sure how to put this in a way that isn't pompus, so I'll just be blunt) my English professor told me I'm "the best writer (shes') seen in this school". My councilor told me that a good recommendation coupled with the fact that I have received no formal writing instruction before I began college would also stand out. I would like to do something with writing, or history, or perhaps both. I know I have the drive and the ability to succeed even further, I feel like I have real-world experiences you just can't learn in a classroom or the chess club (no offense intended) but are my aspirations unrealistic? Is my councilor just winding me up? Any suggestions on where I should apply? Sorry if this sounds a little difficult to understand, I'm trying to make a really long story short lol.

moreResolved Question: How do you create a computer program?
I am curious how to design my own chess engine, from the "brains" to the animation. How do I make one, and what do I consider while making one to make it strong? I honestly don't care if the instructions in your answer are super complicated and as long as a book, if you can show me how, you get the best answer. Any links on pages that show me how are also helpful. Thank You.

moreResolved Question: What else can Collingwood and Owais Shah do as they wait for their turn?
Here are a few suggestions from cricinfo:
1. Stand-in Chess Pieces-
Every Sunday during the IPL, Lalit Modi will be entertaining guests with a game of living chess on the manicured lawn of his palatial Cape Town villa. Spare pawns are always useful, should any of the regular pawns cry off.
2. Trophy-Integrity Monitors-
Equipped with feather dusters and a range of cleaning products, the dynamic duo could keep their eye in by swatting away specks of dust that threaten to settle on the IPL Trophy.
3. Reserve Cheerleaders- For when the first team girls need a break. Pretty much what they've already been doing, but with fewer clothes.
4. Bat Chaperones-Ensuring that Gambhir's and Sehwag's bats get their share of RnR, the superfluous Englishmen could show them the sights, maybe take in a show, perhaps on to a classy restaurant, before making sure they are safely tucked up in their kit bags by midnight.
5. Commentary-Box Attendants- A range of duties, including mopping Mark Nicholas' brow, polishing Sunil Gavaskar's shoes, and ensuring that Ravi Shastri is plugged into the mains an hour before the toss.
6. Dog Enticers- In the event of canine interruptions, the Delhi duds could be released onto the field of play with raw steaks tied to their ankles and encouraged to run towards the exits.
7. Bodyguards- Working directly to instructions from a Mr Shah Rukh Khan, they would be responsible for opening packages with Kolkata postmarks, and tasting any dish sent with the compliments of a former Indian captain.
8. Ball Retrievers- Stationed in the vicinity of Newlands, they will be equipped with fishing nets, rollerblades and maps of Cape Town. This will also have the benefit of freeing up another two seats in the ground.
9. Precipitation-Awareness Operatives.- Where bad weather is forecast, they could be positioned at either end of the Delhi dugout with their palms outstretched.
10. Handshakers-In-Waiting- Accompanying Mr Lalit Modi as he traverses the ground and shaking the hands of some of the less important people on his behalf, thus freeing His Modiness to spend more time on his BlackBerry.
moreResolved Question: I am thinking of homeschooling...what are your experiences?
My child is 6 months old. I am a certified elementary school teacher in Pennsylvania. My exposure to the education system has made me realize that there are too many flaws in it to guarantee my gifted son the education he deserves. I have mixed feelings about this (naturally, since I am a certified school teacher.) My son is very social, and I fear that he will not have the required social interaction to form a full social life. Also, although my educational background is diverse and, in fact, I am certified to teach six areas of instruction (including English, Social Studies, Music, and French), I fear that my expertise in the areas of math and science is lacking. Don't forget...I have an adorable little genius on my hands!!!
With regard to enrichment, the advantage is that I am a musician and my husband is a chess master, so we would have additional time to share our beloved pastimes with our son. However, we are not athletes, and he may miss out on organized sports, for example. There are pros and cons....
Honestly, my reluctance to vaccinate has helped me land in this situation. Of late, my discovery of all the carcinogenic chemicals and metals in vaccines, the frequency of horrible side effects, and the uncertainty about their efficacy (i.e. pertussis) has made me distrustful of authority in general. When I think of my son sitting in school, being pressured by a school nurse or goaded by his peers about why he is not vaccinated, I get very upset. To me, this issue is just a symbol of why I find the idea of public school distasteful when it comes to developing my son's true potential (and not having his intelligence and sweet personality destroyed!), but then again, it is also a very real concern.
Has anyone found themselves in a similar boat...distrustful of authority and wanting the best for their child(ren)? How did you homeschool? Did you almost homeschool and decide against it, in the end? Why?
If you did homeschool, how did you keep your child connected to the outside world? Actually, I live in a major metropolitan area (Delaware Valley- Philadelphia), so there are lots of children's events. I am just wondering about people's individual experiences. Thanks!

Breakfast, walk, locker, study, lunch, study, locker, walk, home, TV, TV,TV, dinner, homework, sleep, breakfast…… This is just pointless! It is like you are a person in that Apple commercial based on the novel 1984! Remember how they walked the same way, look the same way? Then, suddenly, a woman with a hammer appears. She ran towards the big screen with the dictator Big Brother’s face on it, which everyone was staring at(it’s because of this, all the people can have no fun), and threw the hammer towards it. It broke, and all the people were shocked. Their lives would never the same again. Do you ever want to change your life? Do you ever want to break your boring, meaningless sequence? Extracurricular activities will help you do it for sure! Trust me, it’s an incredible idea to join these activities, they will change your life forever!
First of all, an extracurricular activity can make your school life much more satisfying than you can ever imagine. It is a well known fact that for most students, the four years of high school are worse than spending an eternity in hell. There are too many people, too much work, no matter how hard you struggle you can’t get a satisfying mark, and worst of all, you can’t have any fun! Seems like you really need that hammer! Don’t worry, if you join an extracurricular activity like math club, science club, computer club, not only can you get help on problems you don’t get, you can also learn extra tricks or facts that other student’s don’ know! There you go, problem, 1 solved, you no long have to worry about your marks! If you are the person who likes to stand out and show off your talents, extracurricular activities like music bands, math contests, science fairs can help you achieve your goals. As long as your work is not bad, lots of people will be following you, and asking for your autograph. As you can see, with these activities, getting famous and popular is no problem at all. If you are the kind of person who would say, “I don’t care about marks, I don’t care about fame, I just want to have fun.”, then you should definitely join activities like chess club, magic club, you can have fun while doing something meaningful, and you can also do them with your friends. That just makes it sounds even better, doesn’t it? Knowledge, fun, fame and popularity, if you want those, join an extracurricular activity!
If you feel that you already have a pretty nice school life, don’t think that extra curricular activities won’t help you, because they can make you more successful later on in your life too! Your life doesn’t end after you graduate from high school, does it? You still have to apply for universities. You might not have all the skills you need. You might get tired of doing everything by yourself, but don’t have anyone to help you. Extracurricular activities help you get ready so none of those scenarios will happen. Math clubs, science clubs, computer club, art council, all allow you to gain valuable experiences like working with others, working on big projects, ad so on. You can also get skills like being adaptable, punctual, etc. While you get these knowledge, you are also building up your portfolio for interviews with universities, employers, because they treasure these qualities. Of course, even if you get the best job in the world, you still need other people. If you join extra curricular activities, you can meet friends with the same interest. You might be able to help each other later on! That’s three more problems you won’t have to worry about. So if you want experiences, skills, friends, and a more convincing portfolio, join an extra curricular activity!
Some people like to plan everything very early, so they don’t have to worry about anything, and just have to focus on what they are doing right now. I am one of those people but I still join extracurricular activities. Why? Because I can help other people in some activities. I can make the school a cleaner, and much more pleasant place for people to study by joining the environmental council. We recycle, throw out the garbage, and come together to brainstorm ideas to promote environmental friendly lifestyle every week. If it wasn’t for us, people would be saying “EWW” all the time. Many schoolwide events are hosted by some councils. It wouldI'm in grade 9 by the way, so please don't give me suggestions that only university students can understand.

moreResolved Question: Why can't we slice the pie without it caving in?
My husband has tried two different recipes for a lemon chess pie. The second one was the best, and he's cooked three since then. He uses all the ingredients the recipe calls for, and he follows the instructions to a tee. But after he lets the pie cool, it folders over when we slice it. What's the problem?
I noticed the last pie he made was "juicy" ... like maybe the syrupy-sugar or lemon juice was settling in the bottom of the pan after we cut the pie. The pie has a creamy consistency, but it will not stay in one piece. The first time he used a thin pie crust, and the other times he used a deep dish pie crust. The deep dish is better, but we really need to figure out why it won't hold the filling or why the filling won't stay firm. We've tried refrigerating the pie as well. The filling is much firmer but it still folds when we slice it.

moreResolved Question: Home schooling, college?
What are my chances with a record like this? I applied to Florida State University as my first choice, and as I get closer to finding out if I got in, I'm getting more and more nervous. Do you think I had a chance?
My grades for high school were all A's. I have 4 credits of math (up to pre-cal), 4.5 of English, 5 of social science, 5 of natural science (with labs), and 2 of French. I also studied a number of electives such as home ec/life skills, music theory, health, programming and robotics, digital design, art, and sign language. FSU requires that home schoolers submit a syllabus for each course studied in high school to explain course content and list materials used, and we made these very detailed.
On top of that, I'll be graduating high school with at least 18 college credits behind me already (CHM2025, CHM2025L, HUM2930, PSY2012, SYG1000, ARH1051, and one more that hasn't been chosen yet). So far after my first semester I have all A's at the college I'm duel enrolled in.
I scored a 1930 on the SAT. 680 in reading, 730 in writing, and 520 in Math. My math score isn't great, but there were circumstances surrounding that. the College Board didn't provide the appropriate accommodations on my test (I'm legally blind) and I couldn't see the numbers and figures on the math portion of the test. I am planning on retaking it with the proper accommodations, but I wont be able to before the final application deadline.

I have no idea on what to get my nephew this season. His father has asked that we don't buy toy guns or military themed toys for him or his twin brother anymore, as he doesn't like how obsessed they've become with it.
Would a youth guitar make a good gift for a child who has no previous music experience? I plan on getting him a few instruction books to go along with it. How well do you think he'll like it? And for his brother, would a chess / checkers set be a good choice? The little runt's already beaten me twice at checkers.

(Middle School 6,7 & 8)
We are asked to come up with a special for friday mornings 1st period (about 40 minutes) Kids get to pick which special they want to participate in. In the past teachers have offered things such as chess, games, writing alternate endings, number puzzles, etc.
I have no idea what to offer - anyone have any great ideas of something that could be taught in a 40 minute time slot (no cooking)? It should be hands on with minimal instruction from me.
Thanks for all who reply!

moreResolved Question: What spiritual wisdom can we learn in this message from an old chessmaster?
“They say I’ve written the books with the title and they say, chess is my life. Ya, I’ve read, Finally the only one I can do is chess, is to lose a game. Then it is quite essential, I think, what for I live. If people cannot learn from my chess, if I myself having learned a lot, not able to play no more game, what shall I do?”
“Ya, I had in my life difficult days. Just a couple of days ago I remembered, being nineteen years old, first time I played in a strong tournament. And I made the third game. I made a draw and then I lost seven games in a row. The year 1950, being nineteen years old. It was a difficult experience, when he says, “Somebody is wounded.” Ya, when somebody is the first one, first time he is wounded, it is very painful. It is such difficulty for the whole body when somebody is wounded for the first time. When somebody is wounded for the second, for the tenth time, does it become better? suddenly?”
“I don’t believe he who has many times suffered failures, or little difficulties, after the tenth time, he will recover faster, he will become philosopher. There was the first time, the tenth time, a philosopher. But physically it was always difficulties, and will remain.”
Victor Kortchnoi
Grandmaster Champion Chess Player
Author of chess instruction books
http://www.chessclub.com/If you want to hear his actual words, go to the link shown. Go to Monday in the window, "On Losing".
Kortchnoi shares the presentation with another chessmaster, Vlastimil Hort.Paraphrased as best I could, it would come out something like this:
They say I’ve written books with titles and that chess is my whole life. Yes, I’ve even read, “In the end, the only play I have is to lose the game.” Then I think it is quite essential why I live. If people cannot learn from my chess, if I myself having learned a lot, am not able to play the game. what else shall I do?
Yes, I’ve had difficult times in my life. Just a few days ago, I remembered, when I was nineteen years old, it was the first I played in a strong tournament. And I got to the third level. I won a draw and then I lost seven games in a row. In 1950, when I was only nineteen years old, it was a difficult exprerience when someone said, “Oh, somebody is wounded.”
Yes, when it is the first time somebody is wounded, it is very painful. It is a painful difficulty felt through the whole body when somebody is wounded for the first time. When somebody is wounded for the second, or for the tenth time, each time does the wound become better? in a moment?
I don’t believe that he who has many times suffered failures, or little difficulties, will recover faster after the tenth time. He will only become a philosopher. There is a first-time, tenth-time, philosophy that things get better with time. But physically, it was always the same difficulties, and the same open wounds will remain the same.I'm not a stenographer, but I've written it down as accurately as I can. Punctuation is a "difficulty" although I believe I kept to his meaning. The point of his message is that when others say your old and useless, you have learned more than they can teach. While young skill may be better for now, it has not passed the test of time. You’re always useful if you can teach what you know.
The way he handles the difficult times in his life should be an inspiration to anyone going through any troubled time, current or lingering.
The point is to not feel bad if a hurt lingers longer than someone else tells you that it should.
The point is that you can fool yourself mentally that a loss doesn’t hurt, but physically it will always hurt.
For instance, the tenth time you lose a job it will always feel the same until you say, a job is a job.
The tenth time a loved one loses a life, it will always feel the same until you say, a life is a life.Response from Nathan:
You are going to summarize a lot of that message, no one understand you.
What happened Nathan? Did you cop out?10 easy for any answer.
moreResolved Question: What boardgame is more analogous to Bush's presidency: Jenga or Risk?
While we're at it, I might as well shoehorn some more in:
Monopoly: we know he has Big Business--namely Big Oil--in his checkbook
Life: He's a self proclaimed pro-lifer--But only if said life is still in the womb! Soldiers in Iraq: different story
Battle Ship: The training course the Pentagon put him through when they assigned him the duty of protecting Southeast Texas from the Viet Cong
Trivial Pursuit: "Rarely is the question asked, is our children learning?" and "Childrens do learn"
Uno: "This is where all those uhh nations come together and talk about blowing up things, right?"
Clue: "I haven't got a clue."
Sorry!: Sorry that I got us stuck in this never ending war!
Chess: . . . err--nevermind
On a tangential note, does Bush set up the board and read the instructions on his own, or does his puppeteer--Cheney--do that for him too?it's just a joke, some fun. relax
