Welcome to Chess Games Pieces Questions and Answers

Resolved Question: Playing chess with the devil? Help me find the story please?

I remember a tale about a chess grandmaster playing a game for high stakes, probably 'all he owns' and part way through he comes to realise he is playing against the Devil. This is not about the painting showing Faust, this is a different tale. In this tale the chess master plays on, racking his brains for a way out. He wins by challenging the Devil to display his powers - by turning the king to gold with a touch - and under the rules of chess the Devil is forced to move that piece, thereby losing the game. Is there a link to this tale online please? When you provide the link please also give additional keywords that will help me confirm. Thank you ! more

Resolved Question: Here's a great idea for a new game. Any takers?

It's called bungee chess, and is played by two people in a gymnasium. In the middle of the gym a chess set and board is set up on a table. After tossing for colours, the two players take up position, attached to opposite walls of the gym by a length of very strong elastic. At a given signal, the player who has the White pieces runs towards the chess board, stretching the elastic as tight as he can, and makes his move before he is pulled back against the wall. The player with the Black pieces does the same, and so on, until checkmate, resignation, or one player is too exhausted to continue. I am seeking a government grant for this sport, and hope to see it in the Olympics in future years. more

Resolved Question: Can you explain this weird dream?

In my dream I am a blue gnome. However, I am the only blue gnome on a chess board. The rest of the pieces are made up of different items. The pawn are made up of sex toys. The queens are cuts of pork, the King is a spider, the rooks are marshmallows, and the bishops are dressed in stockings and suspenders. Upon starting the game the board is blue but then gets covered in gravy and swiss cheese. Can anybody help me with this dream? I have 1 white queen, 1 white king, 1 white knight, 1 white bishop, 1 black knight(horse), 1 black rook(castle) Here is the puzzle: A long time ago the white king ruled his land. One day she didn't show up for dinner, her husband was worried, the bishop came and said 'my lord a mysterious black knight took your wife away' 'quick , we must storm the black castle and free my wife from the tyrant' his majesty shouted. Resolved Question: What do you think about this autobiographic piece I wrote last year ?

The following is exactly what I wrote in my Diary in China (almost). 28th Aug 2007 Chengdu Bought a Chinese chessboard and this book also a pen. I am trying to watch Pride and Prejudice on DVD. Extreme frustration; the remote is in Chinese without the universal symbols for 'play' or 'stop' etc. I have tried for several days to watch a film; the other day I was offered a selection of heavily scratched DVD's. To make it worse the remote has no batteries with power. Watched 15 min with Chinese subtitles a polish man wanted to interrupt me and check his filmCD. Arrghh. I should transcend technology. I met a very lovely woman at the sci-fi convention yesterday (27th). She was beautiful (except she should shave her tiny facial hairs) like an angel descended to my level. She described herself as a feminist. She wanted me to teach her about reality. 'What is reality'? She asked me. I told her about Bertrand Russell, Immanuel Kant, Einstein Hawking etc. ended up with her saying 'if you don't have sex you will go crazy'! After some discussion of every Chinese persons favourite person to talk about Chairman Mao I was tired and noticed some fundamental differences in ethical thought told her she should read Alice through the looking glass. Especially the bit when Alice is in the backward universe on a (western) chess board world and the red queen tells her: 'don't wake up the king because you are in his dream. Then I went to bed and dreamt about her. The next day I asked her things like if she wanted to be my psychologist and then telling her directly I want to have sex with you. She replied that she is a virgin. 20 years old. After a lot of strange conversations with other people at the hostel I found out that giving someone you love a flower is the best way to get a Chinese girlfriend (or chocolate). I and the beautiful sci-fi woman went to the Bookworm (an English library) in Chengdu where I read 'The Heart of Darkness' whilst watching her heavenly features whilst my thoughts turned to the purer and more sexual. I found myself reflecting on my previous times there e.g. when I met William and the Chinese girl wearing ancient style clothes and the British diplomat from Cambridge who defeated me at chess. I recall that when thinking about this place I imagine myself and the other people mentioned above as being in some kind of a limbo. Surrounded by white light with books of great sages and philosophers floating by us together with chess pieces for a western chess game made in a Chinese style (e.g. emperors, pagodas temples etc) together with equations floating by multicoloured in a soft way placing themselves on papers coming from some abyss. There is a special feeling one gets after having met Zen masters and sci-fi writers. I should not forget to e-mail these people. Amazingly I sneaked into a famous graveyard (on the 26th or the 27t) on Chinese Halloween for free. Normally to visit this place would have cost me 75 Yuan. Surreal. I did it without realizing. This only days after Neil Gaiman told me he knew what it is like to be adopted by dead people so they can tell you about life and death. Yesterday the young man who is the son of the receptionist (of the youth hostel) asked me if I knew what a wet dream was. ‘Yes, why do you ask? He told me he was asking his mother. ? WHAT THE FUCK??? That night he said 'goodnight' I said sweet dreams his mother simultaneously in her rough English said 'I hope you have good dream. I said I will have a wet dream. As I walked to my room I could hear them laughing insanely for about 5 minutes. My trip so far has been like a nightmare (Beijing) a dream (the train to Chengdu) and a blissful wet dream ( the sci-fi convention + girl) so far it has like the divine comedy read through a lens painted by Salvador Dali And grinded by Spinoza. Just to make my life more ridiculous someone turned up and sorted out the sound on the DVD player; Jus as a priest offers Jane Austin a flower and is then rejected. Now 20 min later the DVD is stopping and skipping. I realize that sex is important to the Chinese man since there are many more men than women. Maybe that is why they behave the way they do? It is so hot in China. I shower 2-3 times a day still smell bad. I have made the observation that people are a great deal about the environment but not in a communal way but in a selfish way, the streets and the environment is filthy. The stench in Beijing almost made me throw up twice. Everyone thinks for today. Maybe that’s why nobody plays (international) chess. In Chengdu there are many structures that one could never see being approved for construction in Europe, like bridges with roads on top of other huge roads running parallel with each other. Crossing the road is the only scary thing I always fear for my life cars drive through red lights and on the pedestrian walkway also on the pavement. 'This is China' they say.actually there was a lot more but YA didn't paste everything more

Resolved Question: I would like to know the name of a game similar to chess that i found two years ago?

Hi, I found a game on gamegarage two years ago. It was based on a real game released. It was a bit like chess and had pieces that were called something like sun, moon and star. It was played on a a chess board but it is round. There is a hole in the middle and there are only two types of pieces on at the start but then when you get to the middle they turn into another piece. It was a very good game and now i can't find it. Resolved Question: photographic/eidetic memory?

I know that it's a bit databatable (is that a word), but is there such a thing as eidetic meory? (photographic) and if there is, how could someone improve their memory skills. I mean, without all the technology that has been made, especially the Nintendo DS. I heard chess is good but that only teaches your brain certain positions of chess pieces and when your faced with something totally different then you remember it just aswell as someone who doesn't play ches.... Just wondering if theres any ways to improve your memory by doing what some people might call "day to day" stuff. If there's not then just name a game or something....i'm interested in this sort of stuff, it would be interesting to have an "amazing" memory, cheers :-) Eoghan60Also, does say repeating something so much help your brain or is it like a thing you do so often you just do it.... plus on some memory game websites, sudoku is mentioned a lot, don't see how that can help so an explantion for that would be cool. more

Resolved Question: Chess etiquette?

Hello, I love playing chess. I recently had a game where my opponent touched a piece (not moved, only touched), changed his mind then moved another. I'm not overly fussy, but as this game was being played for money I think all rules should be applied. Am I correct in thinking that once a piece has been touched then that piece should be moved? He was adamant that you are allowed. Is it a rule or is it just etiquette? By the way he also castles by moving his castle first and not the king as you are supposed to.One for 'Hello Dave' Thanks for your answer but surely the castling thing does matter because, if you move the castle first then that constitutes one move, your intention to castle does not matter, the king must be moved first, two squares, signifying that the castle will follow. more

Resolved Question: What's the name of the game?

I had a board game in the late 1970's but can't remember it's name. Anyone out there know what it was called? The board had a chess board layout, chequered and it had large plastic dice (roughly 3cm squared) layed out like chess pieces. The game was played by rolling a chosen dice dice the number of times its value was shown on the top. eg: if it had a 2 on the top then you could roll the dice in any direction 2 times. Thanks for this, the name of the game is indeed "Duell" and it was sold in the US & UK under "Lakeside" and it seems it was sold in Germany under "Parker" too.
