Open Question: I Have a Question about a Chess game I played, if I won or was it my opponent that was the victorious...?

In the last few minutes of the game I placed my game piece in check with my opponents king, at that point I told him he was in check. Well he moved another piece and not the king which was in check, I had no Idea that he would make a move or such a mistake like that. So because he had already moved another piece I took my turn and took his king. I believe once he moved the other piece he had to keep it there and that was his turn and I pproceededwith my move. Was I correct?? I heard that once you move a piece or touch that piece you must move it. I told him he was in check and he did not move his king out of that pposition Pleas any feedback would clear my mind!! He said that I won but at first he tried to make excuses for what happen now I am doubting myself.None of the answers make sense, I told him that he was in check and he did not move his king instead he moved another piece, what was I suppoped to do play the game for him and tell him all my moves? more

Okay so I have a chess program. A class called Piece in package pieces. So I have then several sub classes public class Pawn extends Piece{ for example. I am writing a method to check if a mode is valid which is called by the game class by unit = map.get(target) unit.checkMove(targetSpace) where targetSpace is the space testing to see if I can move it to. (all pieces contain where they are) So my issue is I need to call that class, but the methods holding the information are in the sub classes, knight, pawn, etc. pawn only know how pawn move. I got to the point where I defeated the vortex of cards and went through the door and then put the other door together. The dodo bird keeps saying "queast nowhere snud snud" and that obvioulsy corresponds to the signs outside the doors, but nothing seems to happen when I go through the doors. Also, I can't get the chess piece that is located in the world before you defeat the cards and go through the door. Not an avid game player here, but I don't think I should be having this much trouble with a game rated "E" lol. Help!! Thanks more

Resolved Question: Numerical Chess. Is this a game for the future.?

I have devised a new way of playing chess with numbers. The pieces for each player would be like checkers but with numbers 1 to 16 on top. Since these values will change during the game, they should be written on the pieces in an easily changed way. Players alternately place the even numbers on the back rank in any order. Then they place the odd numbers, again alternately, on the rank in front. This placing of the pieces could be as important as the play. I think that the fact white has to declare positions before black may, to some extent, nullify the advantage of first move. When play starts the odd numbers move as bishops along the diagonals. The even numbers move as rooks along ranks and files. When pieces are captured they are not only removed from the board but the value of the capturing piece is increased by 1. This means that if an odd number makes a capture it changes to an even number so its future moves will be like a rook. Similarly, an even numbered piece making a capture has its value increased by 1 and so its future moves will be like a bishop. The game ends with a win for the player with the last piece on the board, although I think that this is an unlikely outcome. The other way a game would end is if both players had made the same specified number of consecutive moves, say 5, without a capture. Then the player with the higher total is the winner. A draw is possible but I think much less likely than in the conventional game. Of course, this could be played on smaller or larger boards. The smallest possible would be 4 by 4 with no spaces between the players pieces so the first move must be a capture. I think that even this size board has scope for interesting play. I wonder whether this game would involve the same depth of tactics and skill as the conventional game. What do you think?I meant that each player would have 8 pieces on a 4 by 4 board, and 12 on a 6 by 6 board, etc.Placement would be important because it might determine which pieces are captured first. Remember, assuming player ends with the last piece, after 5 pairs of no capture moves, you add up the scores of those remaining to determine the winner.I meant assuming that NO player ends with the last piece, you count up those remaining to determine the winner.Value of pieces is important. Me and my brother were playing it yesterday and it was the final, after playing two long games. It came to a stage where his Knight was able to attack my King piece, but I did not move my King away from that particular spot, because as far as I understand you are meant to say 'Check'. So he didn't say it and I moved a different piece, he hit my King and said I win, and we had a long debate about it, and I said he was wrong. So who was right?Thanks people, I just wanted to clarify that 'Check' is a commonly known phrase in Chess referring to the King being in danger. However, through researching, I've came to understand that it is more professional and better to not say Check as it hints a threat therefor the person can avoid the attack which you don't want. I know is long but i really need help, i have to turn this paper by tomorrow, I already went through everything a few times and i can find errors. I will appreciate if somebody could help me thank you =). My mom always says that I remind her of her mother because my grandma and I are exactly alike in many ways. We both like cooking, playing strategy games and the way I discipline my son, it resembles of the way she used to discipline me and my sister when we were little. Ever since I was little my grandma used to take care of me and my sister because my mom was always working. She thought me all I know about cooking. I remember I started to have an interest in cooking when I was five years old and when my grandma was in the kitchen cooking, I was always right there with her just so she could teach me new recipes. Now in days I’m the only one that cooks in my house except for Saturdays and Sundays, those are my free days, but I don’t mind at all because I just love cooking and I like when every time my family says that my food taste just like my grandma’s, because we all miss her and it just make us think that she’s still with us. I remember the first day my grandma thought me how to play chess. It was a hot day and we were sitting in the living room. I remember she asked me if I wanted to play chess with her, I told her that I didn’t know how to play and she said that she would teach me. She started to explaining me the names of the pieces and how they move. She though me that the knight move like an “L”, that the King can only move one place at a time, that the queen can move wherever it wanted to, that the rook can only move straight not diagonal, that the pawn at first can move two or one time forward and after that just only one time and always forward never back, and that the bishop can only move diagonal. After she explained me the basics we started to play and at first I was always loosing, but after a while I started to understand the game better and I started to win. Now every time me and my boyfriend play chess, it makes me remember the time I used to play with my grandma; she used to love playing chess, that was her favorite game and now it’s my favorite game too. Other thing my grandma and I have in common, it’s the way I discipline my child. My mom says that it resembles of the way my grandma used to discipline me and my sister when we were little. Every time my son is doing something he’s not supposed to, I always give him a mean look and he immediately stops doing it, but sometimes it doesn’t work and when that happen I just tell him to stop or he will see. If he doesn’t stop I just go where he’s at, grab his little hands, look him in the eyes and ask him why he keeps doing something I told him not to do; then I give him a spank in his booty and put him in time out. Then he cries for a while and when he stops crying I ask him, “are you going to keep doing what you was doing?” and then I put him in the floor just to see if he understood and it seems like it works. For example, before he used to mess with the cables behind the TV and now he doesn’t do it anymore. I guess my grandma used to do exactly the same thing with me and my sister when we were little because that’s what my mom told me, but I don’t remember. I don’t even know why I choose this way to discipline my child; it just seems the easiest way for my son to learn that he’s not supposed to do something I told him not to do. My grandma though me a lot of things when I was little that had helped me a lot throughout my life and I pick up on some of her stuff she used to do and I guess it’s normal because I lived with her for fifteen years. I don’t think there’s nobody out there in the world that looks more like me than my grandma does, not even my mom or my twin sister; just my grandma. more

I was playing a game with a friend. It was rather important for both of us, because it was the deciding game in a small chess tournament opposing our respective schools. Anyways, we were playing with 30 minutes on the clock. Towards the end of the game, I had 10 minutes left and he had only about 10 seconds left (wasn't digital, couldn't tell). So, he checked me, but DID NOT say it out loud. I didn't notice he had checked me, and I played another piece. He pointed out this was an illegal move, and claimed he can get an extra minute on the clock for that. This happened again once more. In the end, he finished the game with less than 2 minutes on the clock, with a checkmate. My question is, can you claim extra time on your clock when your opponent plays an illegal move, EVEN if you did not point out that he was in check in the first place.All of these answers are very interesting. I would like to clarify a few details, I do know saying "check" out loud is not obligatory. I'm asking the question, can a time penalty be given to the other player in this particular situation. In reality, my friend pulled out this rule out of his ass, and I just trusted him to know the rules correctly. Turns out there is no such thing as a time penalty for illegal move. And it wasn't a real tournament, but just a friendly match between the chess clubs of our respective colleges. more

After a full year of the Obama administration I think it is plane to see that the United State was unprepared for a black president. The tell tail signs are their on display at our nations capital and all over the USA. The GOP unwillingness to reach any compromise on any of the issue that most concerns the American people. Most hard line republicans are mad over practically everything and anything the liberals might think of turning into law. The creation of a tea party movement, and people yelling for their state to secede are just a few of the things that are happening all around this country. Never before have I witnessed such a divide, with a kind of hatred you can see and smell from the faces of each of the participants in some of the demonstration I have seen on TV. These people are not just mad that they have lost an election. If this was the case they would have died down by now. Despite what most people are willing to admit, the fact is that these people are mad because they feel the minorities are taking away their county and their way of life. Change, and at this level is just too much for most of these people to under go and their fears and ignorance will cloud their better judgment. What scares me the most is the future. If the conservatives have their way, nothing will be done on Capital Hill with this administration. And that will suit the conservative moment just fine. But what they seem not to understand is that “what goes around comes around” and two can play it that way. Liberals will not just stand there when the next conservative president steps in the white house. Unless the conservative can win the house and senate with full majority the full sum will be eight years of stale mate and only America stands to loose. If these people are willing to take that risk then how can they say they love America. A wise man ounce said, “ life is like a game of chess, you can not win without loosing some of your pieces”. What pieces are the conservative willing to let go of. I hope it will not be the most important piece of all “ their faith”. more

Resolved Question: Why does Yahoo chess keep disconnecting me?

It's the third time this week, I'm winning a game, up 2 pieces or more, and I'll get the message "you have been disconnected." I immediately go back in, and every time, somebody else is already sitting in my seat, and I can't sit back down to finish my game. Despite asking politely if they will stand up so I can finish, they never do, and each time I've inadvertently lost or been resigned by somebody else despite the fact that I was winning before disconnecting. It's snowing outside, and I am staying in. I did everything. I was watching the boys getting in sticks for the bonfire through the window, only it got so cold, and it snowed so, they had to leave off. (It still means that we'll go see the bonfire tomorrow). I played chess with myself (with the black kitten watching). I had a really nice check, and really I might have won, if it hadn't been for that nasty Knight, that came wiggling down among my pieces. I watched my cat Dinah washing the face of her white kitten (the black one had been finished with earlier in the afternoon). I tried to wind up the ball of worsted (but the black kitten had a game of romps with it and tangled it all). I untangled it, talked to the black kitten, tried playing "let's pretend" with it (pretended that it was a Red Queen), talked to it about the Looking-glass House - the room we could see in the mirror, just the same as our drawing room, only the things went the other way. I've been a "beginner" for quite a while. (lol) I just don't seem to get any better. I've NEVER won a game. It's very difficult for me. Resolved Question: How can i win in chess ? Is my opponent too strong for me?

I learnt chess last year and i improved dramastically. I was playing number 6 in team B of my school. After some lessons, that was 3 months later, i was hosting position 3 in team A . Before the end of the same months, i was hosting 1st position. Today i need help. I am just 17 years old and the guy i am playing against is in his mid-30. We played 5 games and i won 2 and lost 3. The first game i lost against him was stupid. I could already see an obvious win but i lost because of a stupid mistake: I had two pawns and a rook. He had only a rook. He sucrificed his rook for a rook and i touched a pawn and left my rook unprotected. And he won it by that slit mistake ! Can somebody tell me if the gentleman is to strong for me or what? I am irritated by the way i lose against him. If i win him, we do not finish the game against me - he quites. But if he wins, he wins buy removing all the guards ( pawns and pieces) . Am i weak of what and how can i improve my game against such future opponents. more
