Open Question: What would it take to "solve" chess from a mathematical point of view?

To "solve" chess, as the idea is generally understood would be to be able to give the absolute best move for any player in any situation with absolute certainty, or, at least be able to provide a move whose ultimate end is equivalent to such a move. But chess has proven to be quite the slippery problem. Consider the following oddities: -Because of its unique style of movement, a knight on b2 needs the same number of moves to get to b3 as it does to get to c7 (i.e. 1. Nc3 ... 2. Na4 ... 3. Nb2 Or 1. Nc3 ... 2... Nd5 3... Nc7.) One square is right besides the knight. The other is at the other end of the board. But to the Knight, it's the same distance. -The chessboard does not obey the Theorem of Pytagoras. For a king on a1, the square a8 and the square h1 are the same distance, and so is the hypothenuse of the triangle they form: 7 squares. Following the diagonal is exactly half as long to the king as following one line right and one light up to the same point. There are many others. It is a unique problem. You may have heard of Shannon's number: More chess game possible than atoms in the Universe. But could chess be reduced to a mathematical problem and if so, could the best move problem, at least in theory be solved? What would that take? What would a mathematician, perhaps a set theorist, need to demonstrate exactly?Obviously, several positions are solved. Grandmasters agree. Usually, their way of proving this is to show that the tree leads to a series of won endings. Human intuition also tends to play a large part in certain leaps. A king covering the last three squares for a pawn promotion can fend off any attempts of the enemy king to stop it if the pawn is near enough and there is nothing else on the board. Then follows an elementary queen mate. That type of position is considered solved.Sorry I meant a Knight on b1 in the first example. more

Open Question: Does Anyone Have Info on this Cartoon: read description.?

I am looking for the name, studio etc of an old cartoon that I last saw when I was 9 years old. Plot: "There has been no rain for a very long time. The small animals get together and talk about the problem. They decide that they have to go talk to some great deity about this problem. He lives at the top of a great mountain. Since they can not climb the mountain they go see a great snake and ask for his help. He climbs the mountain with all the animals riding on his back. They find the old man who has been playing some sort of chess game and lost track of time. He makes it rain." This is what I remember. It might be Japanese but I really don't know. This cartoon is from before 1965. more

Open Question: Announcing Check and Checkmate?

I played a game of chess with a friend of mine. I moved my knight and put his king in checkmate. Now, before I moved this piece his king was not threatened, and so I did not say check. After moving my knight, I told him it was checkmate because he could not longer do anything. He accepted defeat by knocking all the pieces down. Now he is trying to tell me the game is void because I never said "check." I told him I did not need to say this because it was just checkmate, which I announced. You say "check" when you put the opponent's king in danger and he is able to do something to break the check. Am I correct and was this a fair game? Is he making this "argument" because he is a sore loser? He also says it is mandatory that one should say check. Who is right? more

Resolved Question: how to improve at chess?

Hey, Ive been getting back into and playing chess for about a half a year and Ive hit a roadblock. Ive read a couple basic books about positioning and stuff like developing the pieces but I dont know what to do after an opening. I do chess tactics pretty regularly and have around 150 games under my belt but Im still a beginner. Aside from the occasional stroke of brilliance I get from my tactics, I find myself in a horrible position. Any tips, guidance or things to look out for more

Resolved Question: How do you win chess?

Out of about 30 rated games on Pogo, I've won one because my opponent lost internet connection. And that's just the rated game! That doesn't include non-rated and playing against computers. Some people, like the Naru/Saku fans, and Sasuke haters for example, wanted Sasuke dead. But there's some people think that Naruto will save him. I think that those Sasuke haters taking this 'We Hate Sasuke' thing way too far. And so some are the Naru/Saku fans, too. Sure he might be a jerk, but Madara is the real jerk. Open Question: what is the online game where it is like a chess scenario but you have different units?

and you can use their special techniques... like there was an archer who could shoot in a straight line... a blond haired healer... a mage who could shoot fire in a plus sign shape... also a mage who could shoot in a straight line... a hand to hand combat fighter with red hair... a swordsman with spikey armor i think... a girl with a dagger maybe who could twice as many times as other units... the enemy team had a mage who could make it rain magic bolts on you (and destroy you easily). i remember a lot about the game but i cannot remember the name. i would like to play it so please and thank you! also the game is similar to armies of gielinor. you move your unit a certain amount and Attack when you are adjacent or are a ranged unit. the only difference besides its not runescape themed is there is no separated turns i think. i think both players units go at the same time but speed determines the order (it is not a real time game like runescape either, turn based and i would always play vs a set computer but i think you can play with other people)keep in mind it was not chess, just the board was like it but it did not follow chess rules like checkmate and how pawns can move 1 and attack diagonal. its different more

And she is a gorgeous blonde hair blue eyed tall girl. but still. she talks about getting all these hot guys, but she never talks to guys, and me and our other friend talk to more guys than her. Also like every time we hangout she tells my friend how ugly her boy friend is, and ive told her she should just stop, but she says shes just joking. and then i dont know what else to tell her to make her stop so i drop it. I just dont know if shes really our friends or just doesnt have anyone better to hangout with. i know it may just be her personality, but is there some way i could tell her that i dont like her insulting me like every second of the day, without jeperdizing our friendship too much? more

Resolved Question: I don't know how to play chess?

Ok, so I've never played an actual game of chess before, even though my whole family plays it. Im really good at other games like Blackjack, Texas Hold Em and Checkers but I've never played chess and want to. I can name all the pieces (Pawn, Knight, Bishop, Rook, King, Queen) but I don't really know how to use them. All I know about Chess is that Pawns can only move 1 square at a time (except on their first turn in which they can move two and that the player with the white pieces has the first go. Before you say Google it, I already have but cannot find a worthy explanation. Can someone explain the rules or even give me a link to a good chess explanation? Thanks! more

Voting Question: How Can I Get Rid Of My Girlfriend's Best Friend?

I've been dating this girl for close to nine months now, but I feel as if our relationship comes closer and closer to an explosive end everyday. My girlfriend's best friend is this guy, who I can only describe as a ghost. The two have been best friends since the seventh grade and we are now entering college. I rarely, if ever, see this guy, but apparently she contacts him everyday. When I do see him, he smiles, laughs, and acts friendly, but I have a suspicion that he doesn't like me one bit. The relationship feels like a game of chess with this guy, and he has the advantage. When I don't tell my girlfriend where I am, she still knows because she contacts her best friend and he always knows! For example, I go to the beach with some friends of mine, don't invite her because it slipped my mind. Go home and then get a call from girlfriend asking why I didn't bring her to the beach. There was like one other girl there, and I've known her for a long time. No idea how he does it. Maybe he has my friends keep tabs on me? This guy has got me pinned, he's known my gf for years longer than me, apparently has contacts, and will rat me out whenever I do something that he deems wrong. Do I have any chance of beating him? I know I can't ask my gf to get rid of him. That's what he wants I think, because he knows that she will pick him over me at this point in the relationship. Punching him and telling him to **** off crossed my mind, but he's got me there too. If I hit him I look like the crazy one, he has never done anything to me personally and I have no evidence of his hate. Anyone have any tricks up their sleeve to make a move back at this guy? Help! This is frustrating! By no means is he scared of me. Help me beat this guy at his own game please! Background: I've looked into this guy because he does kind of fascinate me. He has no romantic relationships, nor has he ever had any. He is insanely loyal to my gf and only her. In high school, every single group of friends that he ever hung out with had a falling out due to trust issues with each other several months after his joining the group. The guy then becomes good friends with one faction of the split group and earns their complete trust. If he is the cause for these group breaks, then he is responsible for over a hundred ruined friendships. I do not want my relationship with my gf to be another "win" for him to put on his belt. more

Open Question: Does any one know the battle chess game like this?

I've played it very very long ago, it was a chess in which each piece is a tank, airplane, or cannon etc (i just can remember exactly the tank and airplane). When a player decide to attack the an opponent 's piece, the two pieces will be put into a battle( just an another screen for battle ). After the one of them die, the latter will be remained to it's last position. Graphics of this game is pretty good, i think it was about 10 years ago. Resolved Question: Why can't I learn chess?

I can't seem to learn the game. I played 25 games on yahoo against mostly low-ranked players and lost all 25. I just can't see where to make good moves, and I keep missing obvious threats. I don't know what my problem. is. I'm getting really frustrated. I'm not used to failing like this. I went to one of the most competitive engineering schools in the country and now in my early 20s I'm lead design engineer in an electronics company. I'm normally really good with logic (programming, troubleshooting, discrete math) and with spatial reasoning (circuit design, mechanics, geometry, vector calculus)- but I can't put those skills together to win a chess game. I have good eyesight and a very good memory, especially for facts. I should be able to play this game decently. But I can't and I'm sick of getting made fun of by the people I play. I've never failed at anything technical before. What am I doing wrong and what can I do to fix it? Do you have to start playing this game when you're 5??? more

Voting Question: Why Am I so Bad At Chess?

I find great difficulty in playing chess. It seems so difficult to wrap my mind around! I am not a stupid person by any means. On the contrary, I am amongst the brightest students in my school. I am amongst the top 10 (in a school of 600) in terms of my mathematical capabilities, able to solve problems well above my grade level. So I am not unintelligent, that's one possibility out the window. I have a Chess.com account and have been practicing daily. One thing that I find very frustrating is trying to understand why the difference in openings is really that important. If I play sicilian or If I play Roy Lupez, is that really gonna determine if I a am going to win or lose. I also do not understand how moving one piece later or sooner in the game will make a difference. If I move my pawn to a6 now or one turn later, will it matter? If I castle now, or develop one of my minor pieces, will it really drastically change the game. I get the impression that it will, but I don't understand why. I just don't understand the principle behind all this. I also cannot think ahead in this game. There are so many pieces on the Chessboard at one time that I cannot formulate a proper plan. I am not a computer! I have my limits! Sure in the opening it is simple enough, but by the time I get into the mid-game, it becomes nigh impossible to keep track of all the pieces. Usually I lose a game because I forget about one of my opponents pieces and lose a rook, or a queen, or a knight etc. I have a lot of trouble working towards a plan or strategy. There is just so much that can go wrong, and the plan can go off balance. I have been playing a couple of games recently and I have lost all of them (against average chess players). It seems to me that when I play I just can't keep up with all the developments, and I eventually end up in a situation where I am "screwed". I also have difficulty in judging when I am in an advantageous position. Obviously if I have my opponent in check or if I ahead materially I am good, but otherwise, I find myself lost. One of my friends who play chess (one of the best in the country for his age actually) when he is giving me a practice match says "oh that was a good move" and he tells me the reasons, and those were not at all the reasons why I made the move. I make "good" moves by accident. I get the feeling I should have just stuck with Calculus, it was much simpler to follow, at least.Thank you for your reply! I have not read many books, and it is reassuring that there is the possibility for improvement simply by reading more. Now that I think about it, thats how I strengthened my calculus skills, extra reading. Man you are good. 2200-ish rating is phenomenal. My rating on Chess.com is 1102. If anyone has any books they would recommend me reading? I have only read the idiots guide to Chess Openings, which was pretty good, but I did not really read it over thoroughly more

Open Question: I know you're tired of these questions but.....does he like me?

Okay, so I've known this guy for...well, I guess this would be the 5th year now. We went to our old school for 3 years together and this is our second year at our new one. Anyway, at our old school, he had always smiled at me and was nice to me. Everyone in my classes at my old school said he liked me, and that I was the only one who didn't know it. But I'm still not sure! He did give me his phone number at the end of our last year at our old school, but I think that's only because I told everyone to write some contact info down on the poster I had my whole class sign. It's not like he really hung out with me much. We did play chess together, occasionally. And last year (our first year at our new school), he didn't pay a lot of attention to me. When we did talk, he was funny and smiled at me a lot. But he was usually with his friends. Now this year, he came up to my lunch table randomly, sat by me, took a bit of my food, and invited me to come play chess with him. There's a room open at lunchtime at our school specifically for playing chess, and he said he had showed up, but he was the only one there and needed a partner and apparently thought of me. I didn't know where to meet him, so he walked me there, and during our game, he joked with me and smiled a lot. He also confided in me with some minor things, like what his grades were, which he says he doesn't really like people to know. But he complimented me slightly (said I was smart), and gosh, he smiles a lot!!! Normally- with most guys- I'd think he liked me. But usually right after doing something like this, he ignores me. So I'm really not sure. What do you think, everyone? Do you think he likes me?Forgot to mention! As far as I've noticed, he doesn't act like this with other girls, smiling and chatting and joking. And I don't mean IGNORES exactly, just doesn't really talk to me a lot afterwards. He doesn't avoid me or anything. He's just quieter. more

I have Always liked the Colle because the attack lines are so clear and the structure of the pawns is steady thus leading to good end game chances. However, now that I am playing players over 2000 in rating, i find it is very drawish. Resolved Question: CHESS QUESTION::::::::::::::Shouldnt the rules be............?

changed to where your allowed to move into check and stay in check if you want to. Instead of just trapping the king into a mate, shouldnt the winner be the player that simply captures the opponents king? Moving out of Check should be optional. If a player wants to commit suicide like that, let him. If he wants to win the game and not have his king taken, he should look at the board, realize that hes in check and simply move out of check. Shouldnt I be allowed to keep my king in check, and move my king into check? If my opponent doesnt see it, thats his problem. If I didnt see that I was in check and I got my king captured, thats my problem. People should pay attention to the game. Like for example, If I move my piece putting my opponent in check, I should NOT have to say "check" to remind him or let him realize it. He should be the one paying attention to the game and should see it himself. He still doesnt have to move out of check. If he doesn't, I would just capture his king and the game ends right there. He could move into and out of check if he feels like it. Sometimes people will notice it and sometimes they dont see it. This is where the surprise factor comes it. If I capture his king in a legal move just like any other peice, regardless of what my opponent did, I should be allowed to do so and be declared the winner of the game, period! What do you think of this? Do you think this rule would make more sense or the game be better off if it was like this? Why or why not? more

Resolved Question: Castling chess a seperate move?

Thus to further explain, can I make a move and then castle in the same turn. more
