I'm going to the eighth grade this september, and I'm going to audition for LaGuardia High School on piano. I really love to play the piano, not too sure if I'm "talented" to say, and I'm thinking about pursuing a career in music. I really want to know what type of piece to play at the auditions. Something classical, like Bach, or Beethoven, or something else, like more contemporary music? And even if I pass for the piano, do you have to sing proficiently? Because I can sing decently, but its not like, a really trained, beautiful voice. So my questions are: -What pieces should I play for the audition? I'm practicing by myself, although I was taught professionally before, I stopped because of the tuition rates. But I'm still thinking about going back to them to review the piece. -And do you have to sing proficiently, or just sing back notes? I can sing decently, not proficiently. Voting Question: What should I name my song?

So I wrote a piano piece that is very beautiful. When I listen back to it, it makes me think of life just moving on. Like if a loved one passes away, life just moves on after that. It is pretty sad, but for some reason near the end it tends to feel a little more happy in a way. Anyways. I am thinking of naming it, "Life Goes On", but I think that there is something better. Do you think you could come up with a name that involves life moving on? I can't name it "Moving On" because I already named a different song I wrote that. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Will it be hard to teach myself piano?

I actually took private lessons with a wonderful teacher from when i was 5 years old til i was about 9 or 10. Unfortunately, by now (13 now..only a month or so to be 14) i have forgotten much of what i have learned :/. I can read notes, but it takes me a few seconds to find those keys on my piano. Therefore, when i try playing some of my favorite pieces of music, i have to play it very slowly. Also, i find it hard playing my left and right hand together...my friend recommended i practice my left hand til i have it nearly memorized, then do the same for my right hand and slowly put them together. I had given up piano before, but now i have a great urge to start again so that I can play some beautiful music for family and friends. Right now I have the sheet music for "Pan's Labyrinth Lullaby" or "Mercede's Lullaby". This is such a beautiful piece, and I was told it wasn't very hard, but it's challenging enough for me. So, any tips or words of advice would be very much appreciated :D thank you. more

Resolved Question: Which song should I dance to? I have a shortlist, but I can't make up my mind....?

I'm making a solo ballet routine over the summer, and I need to choose a song. I'm not sure which style I should do...I could go in for the quiet, subtle and beautiful, but that risks a lot of understatement. Or I could do something bigger and showier, but risk looking terrible. My shortlist is: You Would Have Loved This - Tarja Turunen. I keep coming back to this, it's a really sweet song with lots of beautiful vocals and piano. Very easy to dance to, I can get a lot of extension and poise in here. It's a subtle one. Fleurs du Mal - Sarah Brightman. I don't know it so well yet, but it's a big symphonic piece. I could do something big and showy, but it would be difficult to completely choreograph it all because it's quite long. Cosmic Love - Florence and the Machine. Kind of surreal, quirky. This would be an odd dance to choreograph, and it would be a challenge, but I risk looking like an idiot if I get it wrong. Seven Sirens and a Silver Tear - Sirenia. This is a piano piece, no vocals. Very beautiful, subtle and soft. Oasis - Tarja Turunen. Another piano piece, it contains some of Tarja's haunting vocals. Broken Strings - James Morrison and Nelly Furtado. A nice piece, with a good in-built story. Last Night on Earth - Greenday. A very weird piece. But doable. Lacrymosa - Evanescence. Another symphonic/rock. This would be a challenge. So what do you think? I encourage you to either listen to them first, and don't just pick your favorite song out of them. I'm thinking Oasis or the Sirenia. Or maybe You Would Have Loved This. I don't mind whether it's Radiohead or classical piano, I just need something that creates a meaningful mood. The film itself will go for about 4 minutes. I want a piano piece that's simple enough to do (without too craziness) but a beautiful piece. The 'hardest piece' that I can play is FFX's "To Zanarkand". I can't play Suteki Da Ne, because it's a little too difficult for me. I wanted to play Dragon Boy/Ryuu no Shounen from Spirited Away, but I don't know what some of the symbols mean and I don't know when to use the sustain pedal because the sheet music doesn't tell me. I am now in my 3rd year in college (and yes, i am that old) and i started learning the violin when i was in first year college. After a year, i stopped for 3 months and learned the piano instead. Now that i experienced both instruments, and i find each very nice, i am confused as to which one should i learn this semester. I can only focus on one because of workload in school as well. And i am very indecisive about this because sometimes, when i go hear a song played in piano, i will think i should go for piano but then when i hear a music played by violin, i would want the violin..hence my indecisiveness....My friend, who knows how to play both instruments, adviced me to go for violin because it is more "elegant" because it is a harder instrument to play and because there are more pianists than violinists. I am not learning these instruments to be professional...i just want to be able to play beautiful pieces for my family/myself when i am sad/happy/angry or in short, for my outlet. Right so earlier in the year I learned a piano piece which was about 2 - 3 mins long. I was performing in a concert and when it got nearer I was getting super worried but my music teacher said I would be fine and I said "What if I make mistakes?!!!" and he was like "You won't!!" but I DID. It was my first time performing to a proper audience and any mistake I made I filled it in. But that wasn't my problem. My hands were shaking TERRIBLY. I mean I have no problem with self confidence, making a speech or anything. And I wasn't shaking before but as soon as I started playing I couldn't control myself and I sped up to finish quicker. Anyway I wanted to redo it because I felt I'd get a lower grade so I did it in a room in front of a class and even then I was trembling all over and everyone could notice. In the end I got a good grade, but I've just learned this absolutely beautiful piece which is like 4 minutes long and I'm performing in a concert again. It is 10x harder to play than my last and the concert has already been arranged and I DON'T want to pull out but I am scared to death of effing up. Honestly, I have tried everything. I've played it in front of my family and even then I make some mistakes...But even when I play it alone and think about doing it in the concert I start shaking and I can't even play then I get fuming with myself. I've been trying so hard I don't want to let my music teacher down, he says I'll do fine but I won't :'(. Please don't say 'pretend they're not there' I was completely blocking everyone out last time but I was still shaking like a hairless mouse in Antarctica (sounded good hey? ;) )No...I'm supposed to learn an already made composition. more

One of my absolute favorite pieces to sing is "Silent Noon". I've also sung in various choral works by Vaughn-Williams, but I am having difficulty deciding what I should select for solo recitals since there are so many beautiful choices.
