Resolved Question: Any tips for looking taller on my wedding day?

My SO has a good foot on me and just this one day I would like to feel like I can almost look him in the eye....a few extra inches would go far in helping me achieve this, I don't want to feel like I'm on stilts either. It's not that I'm short either, I'm average, he's just very very tall. I hope to achieve as much height as I can through my shoes, but I'm not great in heels....any ideas? And I haven't picked my dress out yet, so are there any design elements which could appear to increase my height? I'm a fairly non-traditional bride open to about anything, long or short or different. Also, I don't want to look like his midget bride in the wedding photographs, will the photographer find ways of evening out the height variations? I was thinking wedding shoot on a hill, lol. more

Voting Question: Sandra Reynolds a rip-off?

My daughter aged 4 last year won a local competition for the best wedding photo so my partner and i thought it would be a good idea to contact a local modelling agency. We went for Sandra Reynolds based in our home town of Norwich. There was an up front fee of £85 to cover the modelling shoot but we were told that there would be help on the day and the fee was to cover these costs. I arrived at the venue and was guided to a very cramped changing room with about 10 other children and parents. After very little input from the staff as to what was required from my daughter, she had 3 photo shoots in different outfits provided by ourselves consisting of maybe 15 shots. This was infront of the other parents and children with each lasting less than 3 mins. we were told it was to mimic a normal photo session but i disagree as i have friends in the business. We were hurried along like sheep as i have previously mentioned there were 10 young children to get through so many became irritable and this was clearly being noticed by the staff. The whole experience was not what i expected as we were under the impression it would be more intimate and personal. We were told someone would call within 2 weeks if successfull. Needless to say we weren't as my daughter didnt photograph well enough for their junior division but they did encourage us to try again later! Gut feeling i feel i was mislead and there are a lot of people outta pocket by these guys. Would of been better to pay for a photo session with a photographer and send in the results. Have you experienced the same? if so spread the word i consider myself a bit streetwise but these guys had me completely sucked in! more

Resolved Question: What is wrong with wanting to be a wedding photographer?

I am just about to finish my photography degree, and would really love to pursue wedding photography once I have graduated. I have photographed a handful of weddings and just really enjoy the experience of the day, although stressful it is very rewarding. When telling my tutor this, he seemed very unimpressed and almost implied that wedding photography is an inferior job. I was wondering why this is some peoples opinion? more

Voting Question: Looking for movie/movie name?

Looking for a movie, It is about a couple of newly weds, or just a couple. that's buying a new house. The male character of the couple is trying to write a book. Somewhere in the middle of the movie, friends of the female character( The writers girlfriend), asked if they could live with them for a while. Near the end of the movie, the girlfriend/wife. of the writer, is having a threesome with her ex and his girlfriend. This happends when the writer is away. When he gets back, he finds his girlfriend/wife in bed with her ex en his current girlfriend, while photographs laying on te floor about the night before when they had the threesome. It is complicating I know, but it is all I remember from the movie. thnks in advance! Niels more

Voting Question: HELP! Need to help planning my wedding under a $2000 budget.?

I live in Sacramento, CA. My wedding date is set for this October this year. It is still severla months away yet, I have not been able to find a place to hold our wedding. I can't decide where either in Sacramento or Lake Tahoe area to hold our event that is affordable since I am restricted to a $2000 or under budget. My fiancee has a large family. Mine, on the other hand, is rather small. Both our families would like to somehow partake in the wedding, but if you take in the cost of food and drinks and the reception fees for most places, it far exceeds our budget. My fiancee had mentioned the idea of us just getting married (elopement style) and having the honeymoon all at one destination site - (i.e. Hawaii) and later on have a reception with both our families after we can afford to have one. Another idea I had was to have our ceremony in Lake Tahoe (elopement style) yet it could include my maid of honor (MOH) and his grooms man and maybe a friend of the family who can take our photographs (another way to stay within budget). And then in a week, two or three, have a reception where the entire family after we are married to include everyone. And then even later...a honeymoon. ***I don't know how much you need to save to have a proper reception in Sacramento, CA - food and drink prices are what I have seen outrageous - Any suggestions?*** In regards to our ceremony, reception, honeymoon and restricted budget dilemma, my only concern is that we will have to put so many things off due to saving for the reception and later on the honeymoon...that it is my fear that it likely they will never happen which is why the 1st option looked more promising. If there is anyone out there who has ever planned a wedding the cheap....please I seek your expert advice and assistance!!! Thanks ;) more

Voting Question: Nikon vs. Fujifilm: Worth The Extra Money?

So I currently have a Fujifilm S5000. And it's like, 6 years old and has been through alot, and is finally starting to crap out. So I figured due to it's age, bounds in technology, and repair costs, it's time for a new one. I'm an amateur photographer. Not the type that takes a black and white picture of a lawn chair and declares it, but I love photography, genuinely, and have ever since middle school. I was the official photographer for my aunt's wedding, and at family gatherings, but more often then not I just love photographing everything- clouds, my snakes, hawks perched on the fence, odd angles of my plants. Anything that catches my attention. Anything that makes me stop and stare. I also work listing stuff on eBay and having a nice camera is really a good thing for that as well. And it is for this reason I'm not going to accept a little compact camera. I would like to have photography gigs in the future and I'm certainly not going to get one with a compact. Not to mention, my current has 10x zoom and I definitely take full advantage of it. It's one of the "requirements" I guess. I've narrowed it down to either the Fujifilm S1800 or the Nikon Coolpix P90. The S1800 is $230, new. The P90 would be from eBay, newish, and no more than $275 (they go higher, but that's the most I'd be willing to spend). They both have a great look. Both take SDHC cards. Both are 12 MP with 3-inch LCD displays. They both have similar, photo-enhancing features, it seems. The main difference is price and zoom. The S1800 has 18x zoom, while the P90 is 24x. So do you think the Nikon's feature and higher zoom ability is worth the $50+??? Specs: http://www.amazon.com/Fujifilm-FinePix-S1800-Digital-Stabilized/dp/B0035JD0DW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1267067604&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Coolpix-P90-Vibration-Reduction/dp/B001PKEJZQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1267067990&sr=1-1 If Canon has one with a similar look and roughly 12MP with 15x zoom MINIMUM, and available under $275, I'd consider that as well. Thanks for the help!! more

Voting Question: How to tell a photographer in the family my fiance and I don't want them to do our wedding pictures?

So my fiance has someone on his side of the family that is a photographer. He's done wedding pictures for other members in my fiance's family at no cost, but his photography is not our style at all. Both my fiance and I do not want him to do our wedding pictures because we don't feel like they're up to par with other professional photographers' work. We want our special day to be remembered through photographs we really love and match our aesthetic. How do we tell the family member that we don't want him to do our photos, and also handle any backlash from the rest of the family for that decision? This is a traditional Irish family that holds back emotions, doesn't want to talk about anything, etc. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: My wife and I want to renew our vows, how and where ?

After ten years of marriage my wife and I would like to renew our wedding vows. We don't want anything to lavish and would be taking our children to be part of the service, if possible we would incorporate 2 weeks sun holiday. Ideally my wife would like a palm beach ceremony with sunset photographs of the occasion. We live in the UK and would like suggestions of a palm beach as close to the UK as possible, does anyone know of such a location or maybe know someone that has done exactly this without having traveled to far. Resolved Question: Can I pull off using a standard 18-55mm/3.5 lens to shoot a wedding?

I was recently asked to photograph my cousins wedding..now, I only do abstract photography so all i have is the 18-55mm lens that my Nikon D60 came with. I will say its going to be outdoors in the pasture, very small informal wedding, they want all pictures outside with the horses and in the field. I do have about 2 dozen of the Cokin filters including almost all the creative effects and am planning on getting an extension tube(s) for my own use...is it possible to get away with just using these to photograph my cousins weddin? or is there one lens I can buy that can be used for most of the work that I know I will actually use again afterwards?Yes she definitely knows I don't do "people"photography. She is fine with that and wants to take the chance. I have until the end of July to practice and am meeting on the weekend to go over poses and details of wedding. I will also be possibly having my dad along with me (he did wedding photography for almost 15 years). Hopin this will actually have ppl encouraging me to go for it an not turn it down... more

Resolved Question: Who can i refuse services to in my business?

I recently had a bit of a problem with a client. I am a photographer and a family member of mine was getting married and asked me to photograph their wedding. I had sent out an invoice to the bride to be stating that there was a $250 non refundable deposit in order to officially book that day for their wedding. She Emailed me back stating that she wasn't going to pay it because the wedding had recently been called off. No one contacted me to tell me this, and she hadn't signed anything yet saying that she officially owed me that money. From this point forward, do i have the right to not provide my services to her simply because i fear that she cannot commit to a payment? Im so irritated because i turned away another client and cannot get them back for that date. As much as i know this was partially my fault for not having them sign something immediately, I would like to make sure it doesn't happen again. any suggestions?Rachel, as i said, i know it is part my fault...the person i want to refuse service to is not the family member and i have enough clients that it will not effect me. my business is not going to be put in jeopardy over this one person. They have a history of not paying bills apparently. I did end up taking it upon myself to make a note on my website saying that the wedding date is not official until the deposit has been put down. But i was more worried about If i refuse service, what can she do to me? Cant sue me because its purely over money and not race, sex, etc. I'm doing it to protect my business and to make sure im eating my money again more

Resolved Question: May someone sue me for anything...if I used to work at a company that is being sue even tough i dont work ther?

This is the situation---I started working with a photo studio company that had 1 year open. I started as a contract labor...in 1099 form. with the promise from the boss i was going to be turned into a w2 later...was there 2 years it never happen...Anyways..My position was to do mainly everything from being their studio photographer to-graphic designer for invitations and etc. to receptionist, secretary, photolab printer technician, Cashiers, and Office Manager. The problem started because I did not wanted to photograph such great and special days like wedding and quinceaneras yet --when i didnt have enough experience so I told my exboss that I could find someone to take the event photos for us..like a photographer for events and pay him by contract per project. So I asked a friend that supposetly was a photographer if he had ever taken weddings or that kind of events before and he said yes. So my exboss hired him for a quinceanera event. the pictures came out ok and looked good but he used his camera..so im guessing he was familiar with the settings and everything. Next event it was a wedding.. and he also said he could do it. so we gave him that project but we asked him to use our camera this time because his camera was a lower quality camera and we had asked him to practice that camera 1 week before event so he could feel familiar with it. Apparently we found out after the event that he did not have time to practice w camera..and all photos from wedding ceremony came out blurry where u can recognize no one and extremelly horrible. We were so angry at him that we did not know what to do...we had never encounter that before and the photographer was trying to put excuses and blame it on us etc. welll the photographer agreed to pay back the customer half of what they had already paid and the rest was gonna be printed from reception photos and bridals session because those did came out good...and ok...after that I myself had to lighten alot of photos from the original files the photographer gave me cuz they were super dark...after that he had been in contact with the client because we transfer her case to him since he was responsible for her pictures to try to fix...he needed to be in touch with her...mostly..we will call her once in a while to be update...and send her one email to see how she was with the photographer....she actually started saying the photographer was backstabbing us saying it was our fault and blaming it all on us ...and she was getting on his side because she said we were not returning any of her calls or emails..and we had a bad customer service...etc..she stopped by to the studio a couple of times and try to resolve the issue really sad...I felt so bad for the situation even tough i wasnt the photographer that ruined her wedding and gave her hopes atht I will try my best to fix the photos for her as much as i could and it will be possible. So I asked the photographer to help me on that but he took like 6 months to fix them...when i got the cd back supposetly fix it was the same thing i had given him at the beggining...never heard from him again after that....I told her about it...and she was mad...she just told me she hoped i could fix them for her..and that what i did i try my best to fix 6 diffrent photos for her we needed to give her...1-24x36 and 4 16x20--which we did its been almost 1 year and a half after that and she only has approved 2 prints...i been in contact with her even tough im not working there no more and trying to help her...and now she said if i dont fix her this she is suing the company and me becauase i was handdling her account...can she do anything to me ...I mean i was employed by the company to fixed someone else's mistake...whay would i be sue..and plus im no longer there I didt take those pictures i gave her good service all the time...and i try my best to fix those photos for her and i was honest to tell her that some photos could not be fixed....now she wants to sue me...may someone help me and advise in how may i defen myself on this can she do that? I really doubt it but i need to know...thak u so much more

Resolved Question: Transportation for Wedding Day?

What type of transportation did you use for your wedding day? Did you rent a Limo for a few hours, or use your own vehicles? I think it would be nice to have all members of the wedding party together with us. It seems more fun and personal. Resolved Question: How can you protect a printed photograph?

My MIL wants photosgraphs from my wedding. Here is the problem. Several weeks ago, she call my photographer behind our backs, and had the password to the online photos changed so she could have access to view them. She also printed them with the word "copyright" on it and sent it out to whomever she pleased. My husband already said something to her about what she did, but she just ignores it. I would love to not give her any photos, but I don't want my husband to feel as though he is being put in the middle. We are getting the copyright for our photos. I don't want her to be able to scan them (she has a scanner) and put them on facebook, give them out to whomever, etc. Is there a way to print the photos so that if scanned, the image is blurred or distorted? My husband and I paid for everything ourselves. All I can say is that my MIL is a very selffish, self-centered person. Whatever she wants, she gets not matter who it hurts. (My husband would agree). I am sure she was very persistant with the photographer. We were very excited to show our photos to his family. We did not have that joy because she took care of it for us. I do not want my photos on facebook or sent out to anyone without my permission. I spent almost $3000 on photography, and I would like some control. Perkie- Cut some slack? This lady went behind our backs to verbally invite people 2 weeks before the wedding on the basis of no shows. My husband found out and made her univite them. (When we made our list, we allowed plenty of space for people she wanted). And that's only one of the many things she did. more

Resolved Question: Best digital camera for portrait/wedding type photography?

Yes, I am aware that SLR cameras provide much better picture quality blah blah but to be honest I don't want to pay too much and I don't want to be lugging around a big camera all the time! But if anyone can recommend a low price and compact one then I would definitely consider :) So basically I am not a professional but I would appreciate a camera which provides better results than the ones I have had/used before. If possible I would like a camera with image stabilization, Live view LCD and colour control (especially flesh tones) as these are helpful for portrait photography. Fast multi-point auto focus and lots of external flash options would be a bonus. The biggest problem I have faced with previous cameras is that the flash can wash people out (i.e. make their skin appear white/blue due to the harsh flash) I know that this can be expected when taking photos indoors/at night time but I am wondering if their are any cameras with settings that would help this as all I am asking for is decent quality photographs where people appear flesh coloured! I would like to spend between £150-£250 but can definitely pay more for something which is noticeably better. Any suggestions would be appreciated and if you have any sample photos (preferably portrait style shots) taken on the cameras that I can see then that would be a bonus. Thanks all! more

Resolved Question: What tips would you give to photograph your own wedding?

I'm a photographer, and I've cov ered the basis. I'm having a very small wedding and I planned to just set up a tripod and cable release for the formal shots, it should be simple enough. I thought it'd be an interesting project for myself. I plan to get a newer longer cable release cord. I'm also going to set up a photo booth for my guests so that I don't miss any photos as well as giving out disposable cameras for them to photograph what theyw ish too. Do you have any tips, anything I"m missing any ideas? Other than hiring someone, I have a bunch of photography friends but I want to do this project for myself, I think it would be fun. This was really funny to read back. Let me just add a couple of things. 1.I'm already married, we're doing the ceremony for the families. 2. My photographer friensd will be helping witht he ceremony, I"m not going to try to photograph my own ceremony. 3. I was just thinking of this for the formal shots so people didn't have to stand around and amaybe some of the fun couple shots. I'm a photoshopper through and through and have a little cable in there wouldn't be difficult to take out. 4. Relax people, it's not your wedding! more

Resolved Question: Advice PLEASE....from self employed people!! Please I NEED YOU!!?

So about a year ago I started getting really into cake making and have recently decided to register myself as a business and give it a go as have been having alot of interest which is fab!!! Wella week ago a friend of mine came round and said I hope you dont mind but I have been talking to a friend about you (the friend is in wedding organising) and she is highly impressed by my work particularly the flowers I make using flowerpaste...apparantly she is soooo excited as they are finding the prices in England too expensive so are looking to the US for supplies as apparantly its cheeper..but she would rather give me the business. I dont know however what she considers expensive and am a bit worried that I dont want to compromise on profit simply because I am new to the business world. Am I being selfish should I just do it for a cheaper price for the opportunity? Also she has a photographer coming who is willing to photograph some stuff for me for free (hes very good?) I am sceptical about this...how do I know he wont use my pics or am I worrying too much??? I ahve agreed to meet them and my friend come along but I am a bit anxious and dont want to be taken advantage of. I wouyld really appreciate any thought on the matter??wow thank you both....fantastic advice!!! Wish I could choose 2 best answers!!! more

Resolved Question: Photography issue...could use some advice?

I lost my job and am running out of money. I can only survive here in my house maybe another month at the most. I promised a couple w/ a contract that I would photograph their wedding in May, but it appears that I cannot afford to live in my house any longer. I've been looking for jobs like crazy and I'm not getting any photo clients. I've been to several interviews that seem promising, but nothing. The only option I have is selling my house in America and moving to Denmark to stay with my friend who can help me out. I really have no other choice and am wondering what should I do about these clients? They've given me money in advance, but I do not have that anymore. I've had to use it to pay my mortgage. Resolved Question: Wedding help, need to pick a colour for bridesmaid dresses, mens suits grey, my dress white, thinking yellow,?

Hi, my wedding is at a cafe with beach views so I kind of want to go for the whole beach wedding theme, however- my dress is really princess like so doesnt really fit the theme but its white and perhaps I dont really need to blend into the theme anyway. So the grooms suits will be grey, light grey, and I need a third colour for my colour theme, for bridesmaid dresses and to match everything else to so the colour scheme would be white, grey and yellow for eg. However, I want a colour that compliments me- I love aqua however this may not look great up against the beach backdrop in photographs, then finding blue sort of flowers will be a pain etc. The other colours I have in mind are apricot, so it would be white, grey and apricot colour scheme- which I love but I dont know if it suits my features- I have light brown hair, or dark brown in winter, brown eyes and I think I look best with quite heavy eye makeup (especially for photos) I love having big black lashes but dont know if this will clash with the whole pastel sort of beach theme, and I dont know what colour is suited to my complexion, I am white but will be tanned for the wedding, the other colour I was considering is lavender, I hope to use the same colour eyeshadow as the bridesmaid dresses to incorporate the theme into my look, but again lavender, probably with lavender flower rustic sort of poseys etc does not go well with dark eye makeup? Help, what colours best suit the brunette complexion? and I am very confused about the whole thing but if you can help in any other way with any of my other dribble please do. I am not good with this sort of stuff and am under alot of stress so I cant really think, thanks guys more

Resolved Question: A "friend" blocked my email with no explanation...why?

I had a troubling thing happen with my email a few years ago. A person who I thought was a friend (well, an adult I looked up to from the time I was 11 years old and with whom I shared an important moment in my life some 14 years ago) heartlessly, without any indication as to why, blocked me from sending any more emails to her. She had moved away 14 years ago and I had only seen her periodically since then, but every time I saw her she seemed happy to see me, so I had no indication anything was wrong. She had given me her email address after she had moved, so periodically, maybe 1 or 2 times every couple of months, I would send short emails just updating her on events in my life, and always asked how she was. However, she never, not once, responded to my emails. I didn't think too much of it, and thought she was probably just too busy. The last time I sent a message was after my wedding, and I sent (admittedly quite a few) photograph scans as attachments in an email. I was going to send another email with attachments, but when I tried to send that email, it came back and said that I was blocked. The message from AOL (her provider) said that it had received "numerous complaints" from the recipient (she was the only person on my email list who used AOL), and as to the "nature of these complaints," to click on the link provided (I was too scared to see this, so I didn't click on it). Hurt by this whole thing, I canceled my email account and haven't heard from this person in any way, shape or form since (and it's been 3 years ago now). Now, I was reading how AOL in particular blocked who they felt were spammers, and I began to wonder if maybe AOL had done this, rather than my recipient herself. I've been too afraid to try and contact this person since this happened..but is it feasible that my emails with lots of attachments were interpreted by AOL as spam and that is what blocked me, or would the individual person more likely be the one who blocked me? I guess I'll probably never know without asking her directly. I know she is on Facebook but I am reluctant to contact her in light of all of this. If I haven't had any contact for three years, I most likely probably have my answer, even though I am still hurt by it. I'm hardly a stalker but since I continued to send emails with no response I wonder if they were considered unsolicited... Any thoughts? Thanks so far for the comments: As to my email server blocking her messages, she never replied to any of my emails, so there is no record of her sending me message; I was always the initiator. Yet when I would see her in person now and then, she was always very friendly to me. Also: could my having sent her large attachments with lots of scanned photos in them cause her to block me? I guess I didn't think about how big they might have been, but they had 6--12 photos in them. more

Resolved Question: My cousin doesn't seem to want to be involved in my wedding any longer... advice?

After a misunderstanding we had in regards to a photography session I completed on her behalf, she has deleted me from her Facebook list of friends. Mature? I think not. She paid me $40 to photograph her family and herself, seeing as I am an aspiring photographer wanting to go pro. I did not ask for compensation, but gladly excepted (who would deny it?). I gave her 20 fully edited images on a high resolution disc in a matter of three days just before Christmas (a rush for me seeing as I was doing another session at the same time and work a full time job!) She immediately got upset that I did not give her all of the images, and as nicely as I could I explained that I did not want images floating around that were not of the best value, I only wanted the best for her. Ugh, yes, it escalated. She deleted me. The Bridal Extravaganza Show is Saturday. Do I kick her from my wedding (she was/is a bridesmaid with my MOH - my sister, and my friend). Or do I ignore this, and let her be in the wedding anyway, I mean, I would hate for us to go dress shopping for the girls and her not show up because she won't answer my calls or texts. Ugh, so immature, she's going to be 29 I believe and she can't even confront me, she has to yell and scream through emails that I screwed her over and it was never my intention. I even made the offer to let her select more photos for editing with the holidays being over!I sent her a message, it said: I was expecting since I asked you to be in my wedding that you would attend the Bridal Extravaganza Show with J***, M***, and myself. However, your sudden disappearance from my list of Facebook friends has me concerned that you have not gotten over our recent spat about the photography session and no longer wish to associate yourself as a bridesmaid in my wedding. Would my assumption be correct if I said that I will not be seeing you this weekend?CorpCity, I'm pretty sure that the photographer you used was probably cheap as dirt and couldn't take a picture of a bus if it hit him/her in the face. There is nothing, no where, that requires I give so many of a certain picture out. These were NOT wedding photos. They were about 45 minutes worth of a few poses in a few places I picked out. FULLY edited! I did speak to some of the pros, ON THIS WEBSITE and they were shocked I even gave her printing rights at all! Some will only give 50-60 proofs (for a portrait session) for a customer to select from for editing and printing. Some pick and edit the photos themselves. It depends on the session, the photographer, and what the client wants. It does not matter that we had a misunderstanding. She went around to our family running her mouth before telling me that I had 'offended' her. No I already sent a message to her, the ball is in HER court now."I know looking at mine and many other people's wedding photos on disk, we find that there are a lot of duplicate photos because some of them were re-touched and edited but the photographers include all of the photos--both unedited and edited. This is done so that the customer (your cousin) has the option to do whatever she wants with the photos that were taken--whether you think they are bad or not because that is all dependent on individual tastes and preferences." I asked, and no photographer would put his/her name on a picture that had not been properly touched up. Also, these are for PRINTING, NOT for her to do what she wants, which she did. AGAINST copyright LAW go against when she started cropping my name off the image and changing the coloring of the image. You had no right to give them all thumbs down, I gave you yours... I hope someone else gives you one as well, because you really are - the WORST answer I have ever received on ANYTHING.Messykatt - I did email her, thanks for the suggestion. I will wait for her reply... I think by Friday morning she will have had time to read my message and make her decision. I know what she meant by it when she deleted me though. It was not a mistake - it was deliberate. Very deliberate, and very immature. She also did not send my family a Christmas card with the photograph I took of her family. When I saw the card at my grandparents, she had cropped my name off, and edited the photo to her liking. NOT what I had in mind. more

Resolved Question: Art college portfolio?

I am absolutely freaking out because tomorrow is the day I photograph my portfolio for college submission, in order to make the deadlines. The two art schools I am applying to are Mass Art in Boston and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. I am also submitting a portfolio to UMass Amherst, to get into their art program. I am trying to make last minute adjustments to everything and I am so worried. Can someone give me some feedback on the description list provided? Thanks! 1. Prisma colored pencil still life of fruit 2. Pencil drawing of my sister covering her face with her hands, with the lyrics to MGMT's song "Kids" scrawled in the background 3. Pencil drawing of a woman, a teenager, and a little girl blowing on a dandelion 4. Pencil drawing of a camera taking a picture of a ceiling, with a picture of clouds on the viewing screen 5. A self portrait in unnatural colors in acrylic paint 6. A picture of two flowers from my yard in oil pastel, mixed with turpentine. the background is completely green with leaves scratched into the oil pastel. 7. A small self portrait, abstractly done, made out of newspaper 8. A piece based on song lyrics, of a girl on a train looking out to LA, in chalk pastel 9. Two small paintings: one of candy, and one of party favors, in acrylic paint to show observational skills 10. Glass earrings 11. Pencil drawing of my sneaker getting caught in bike spokes (note: I am mentioning in my description list that this was not intended for RISD submission, because it is not) 12. Texture study/ rubbings in sketchbook 13. Collage of city photographs (I am getting them lab developed now, and piecing them together tonight) 14. Work in progress: oil painting of myself sitting on a cloud 15. Work in progress: still life of wedding objects So as you can see, right now I have the bare minimum and two of them are works in progress. I have other pieces, but they definitely don't display my best skills. So any feedback would be appreciated or even any ideas of last minute sketches/studies I could do today. Thanks!I don't have pictures for all these so I figure the descriptions will have to suffice. more

Resolved Question: Is my idea for a lit creative project creative enough?

Okay, so we can basically do anything, like present photographs, or a short film, or make a painting, write a song, etc...which we were inspired to do by the poems we've read in class. I was thinking of focusing on The Tally Stick? It's a poem about a couple and...well, google it if you want to read it!:) So I want to make a kind of tapestry, by weaving everyday stuff, like power cords, towels, whatever, with lace to symbolize their wedding, baby headbands for their children, silk ribbon to symbolize deaths (the flowers?) stuff like that. I need opinions, though:) Thanks more

Resolved Question: My dream wedding has many super romantic details, but?

I cannot decide on a wedding invitation! I already have my colors (ivory, black, and gold), but all the invitations I've seen just look so ordinary like they could easily be made in Photoshop with crazy colors, weird fonts, and clip art pictures. My dream invitation would be the one just like Britney Spears' and Kevin Federlines' invitations made by Lehr & Black (http://www.lehrandblack.com/). Photographs are as follows by copying and pasting the URL's. /Users/shelbychesebro/Desktop/bkwed8_lg.jpg /Users/shelbychesebro/Desktop/bkwed10_lg.jpg /Users/shelbychesebro/Desktop/bkwed15_lg.jpg My problem is that I cannot afford the extravagance of such gorgeous invitations, but I was hoping that there might be someone crafty enough to be able to guide me on making my own that look the same or very similar, that way I can save money and have my dream invitations to impress my guests and make them feel special! These invitations are the closest I can come to my fairytale-themed wedding. Please help!!! All advice is greatly appreciated so thank you in advance! P.S. The links I have provided may not work since the preview will not show the link in its entirety. If you go to the Lehr and Black website you can view the invitations by searching on the right hand side of the screen for Britney and Kevin. Thanks again!!! more

Voting Question: How much should I pay an amateur photographer for a destination wedding?

I am planning a wedding that is about a 6 hour drive away from my hometown and I am not sure what to do about the photographer. I have a very limited budget and I am a photographer myself so I am very picky about my photographer. I almost wish I could photograph my own wedding :) Well since most good photographers are way out of my budget I was thinking about asking 2 girls from one of my photography classes to do it for me. They are not pros but I love their work and since neither have ever done a wedding, having both of them there will ease my mind, since it is much more likely I will get pics I will like. I just don't know how much I should pay them. I will cover the cost of travel, hotel, and food and it will be about $150-200 total. Plus they would be free to invite whoever else they want an could have their own mini vacation on the beach. I know as a college student I would work for free if it earned me a free weekend on the beach. Should I pay them an extra $100 each or should it be more?Don't want to use local photographer b/c they are either too expensive or not good enough. more

Resolved Question: LDS Family Bible For Wedding Gift?

My friend is a converted Mormon and she is marrying her fiance on March 6, 2010. I am FAR from being Mormon at all and she knows this quite well and knows my views on it, but she also knows that I truly want her to be happy and this is the life she has chosen. Anyways, I am wondering where I could get a family bible for her and her husband with a simple LDS wedding type inscription along with their names in it and possibly a place on the back of the cover with a place for a family photograph of the happy couple. Is there a good site that can give me a good idea about this or a place in the Mesa (Phoenix) area that I could find a good quality family bible for them?I've never once thought she was going to stop being my friend I've known her for years long before she converted. That's not my worry. Thanks for the advise :) more

Resolved Question: New Mexico photographer fined $6,600 for refusing to photograph lesbian wedding? Are religious rights inferior?

That is, in the USA are the Constitutional protections of one's religious rights (to live as one determines is in harmony with one's religion) an inferior right in comparison to the rights of homosexuals as a protected class? http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=119282================================= For the silly who think that ignoring facts will make them go away (simply because they don't approve of the source), here is the actual published verdict as posted at the Georgetown Law website: http://www.law.georgetown.edu/moralvaluesproject/News/documents/ElainePhotographycase.pdf Or are you saying that the New Mexico Human Rights Commission is a hoax?================================= Interesting. I never expressed my personal view of the matter. (And not being an American, it has no impact on my life.)And seeing how it seems to matter to the whiners below, I happen to be gay. more

Resolved Question: Do the Constitutional protections of one's practice of religion protect refusing to photograph a gay wedding?

I recently received an email from a colleague who serves on the faculty of a U.S. university in a state which has legislatively affirmed its refusal to recognize gay marriages: "One of my students is funding his PhD program tuition by videorecording and creating DVD presentations of weddings. However, he recently turned down a lesbian couple because it would have meant working the weekend before his thesis defense. Now the couple's attorney has demanded a significant sum of money or they will sue the student for denying them his services because of his alleged 'religious-based contempt for their holy union'. " Should the "rights" (I put the word in quotes because I don't know if U.S. law officially considers them rights) of homosexual couples trump the rights of an individual to apply religious conscience to his/her business pursuits? (Of course, I am in no position to evaluate whether the photographer/videographer denied service to the couple for religious reasons or scheduling reasons.) Or to put the question another way: On what basis should religious rights or "freedom from discrimination as a protected class" be recognized as superior to the other in judging whose rights should receive the most protection?========================== For those naive enough to think such lawsuits pose no meaningful threat, consider the court penalties assessed against this photographer in New Mexico: http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=119282 more

Resolved Question: Did anyone else on here go to their wedding in wellies?

Today, Grace, the daughter of Archbishop John Sentamu of York, had to go to her wedding in the Minster wearing green wellies because of the snow. I too had to do that 29 years ago for the same reason and i had to walk there! Three miles! It was brilliant - how many brides have you seen dressed to the nines and wearing wellies - i got cheer after cheer and even people with more umbrellas and glasses of wine and sherry out of the pubs en route! By the time i arrived i had a crowd of about fifty people who all crowded into the registry office to 'see me off''! I hope Grace Sentamu's photographs turn out to be as fantastic as ours did!Lol Deighton ! Do tell!Misty Blue - our friends 'decorated' the wrong car, parked at the reception, i can still see their faces as we got into our car - one of them threw herself on the bonnet crying "you're in the wrong car"! as we exited the car park to riotous laughter. I still wish we had found out who owned the car decorated with revolting bits and pieces, ablaze with balloons, lipstick and toilet rolls and how it might have been explained away to a 'significant other' ! more

Resolved Question: Is it illegal to photograph on public property?

I am a photographer with out a studio and seeing as it is freezing cold outside I have been meeting some clients indoors at the Football Stadium (which we as a city have paid to be built for with taxes increases a few years ago). Well lately We have been kicked out because we are taking photos inside. We are mostly taking engagement portraits for clients who had booked us for their upcoming wedding. I have read that we are legally allowed to photograph on any public property but this one security guard keeps saying what were doing is illegal and we can't advertise our business which we aren't doing and so on... So long story short.... What are our rights and are we in the right or wrong? Any advice is appreciated!! Thanks!! more

Resolved Question: How much (on average) does a portriat CD cost?

I was hired as a (amateur) photographer to photograph a wedding. The bride's family paid me and purchased a CD of the photo's. I gave them a nice deal, because I knew them. I just received a phone call from the groom's family inquiring about purchasing some prints. I want to offer her a price for the entire CD, but I would like to make a little money. I was thinking $120 for all of the photos. I took about 300 photos. more

Resolved Question: How to become a professional photographer or photojournalist?

I'm digging around, looking into the field of photography as a potential future career. I've heard photography compared to painting and acting. It sounds like a hard field to break into, and once in tough to make a living, and unstable. If I were to do photography, I would have virtually no interest in the routine photos people take to pay the bills - weddings, models. I'm primarily interested in nature photography - landscapes and wild animals - architecture and documenting human and/or environmental controversy/plight. I'd be interested in sports if that meant documenting a rigorous man vs. nature expedition. I might be interested in the technical challenges of sports photography. I'd photograph the aftermath of natural disasters but probably not wars. How do you become a photographer? What kind of school would you go to? I already have a B.S. degree so it could be a school where you specialize - some kind of art school maybe. Other than Times magazine and National Geographic, who might I work for? How does one sell their photography if freelancing? This is one aspect I know I won't like. What is a day in the life of a photographer like? I am drawn to this field by the potential for adventure and world travel, although I do think I have some natural aptitude for photography, so if it becomes moving from one wedding to the next in my town, I won't enjoy it. What do you like most about being a photographer? What do you like least? What is the pay like? What drew you to the field? What do you think are the most important skills a photographer should have? Do you think as technology develops the field of photography will become outdated - that everyone will be able to capture a moment with their cell phone that there will no longer be a need for photographers? more
