Resolved Question: Pricing for portraits - some lessons?

OK, to make this a question and abide by the rules, I will ask the "experts" on here for their thoughts on this article. For the inexperienced, rank amateurs, "wannabe" photographic businesses, and all others (especially those who charge $50 for a session and all shots on cd), this is for you and I only wish it could be made a sticky. Read and inwardly digest this article - http://www.mcpactions.com/blog/2009/10/12/how-should-i-price-my-photography-words-of-advice-from-jodie-otte/ It is long so hopefully you will have an attention span better than a goldfish - one lives in hope. more

Resolved Question: Ideas on what to charge for event photography?

Hi, I've been asked to join a UK content team at a big Esports event in europe who I have shot an event job for before (this was while i was attending it already so was happy to shoot for a small fee) but this will be a massive weekend long event in europe with big name teams attending so they will be expecting a lot of photos along with uploads to a few different sites they report/commentate for throughout the event. They have asked how much I would charge as my fee for the 4 nights and 3 days (they are covering all travel and accomodation expenses and have daily food allowance). Having never charged for a job this big i'm a little unsure what to reply with but they are keen on me going since they know me and my work. I have setup my price for portrait work, so far it is £50 an hour including basic post processing. So was possibly thinking of half day (up to 3 hours) being around £120 and full day (up to 6 hours) being £240. However I will likely be working, due to the nature of these Esport events, up to at least 9, possibly 12 hours a day or more dependinging how long the tournament matches go on for, in which case, £300 or £350. Does anyone think that sounds reasonable or too much for my first proper event? Cheers for any advice. Dave more

Resolved Question: What DSLR to get as my first DIGITAL Camera?

I'm thinking of getting a new camera for Photography as we move onto digital in lesson. so ive been looking at DSLR's and was thinking of getting a Canon D1000 but then my teacher pointed out that it hasn't got that much of a high ISO so i wouldn't be able to take very good night shots (which i want to do mainly but i do like other things like landscape and portraits) So i though i would come to the help of you :) the price range should be like £600 Max (gonna see if i can get it on ebay for cheaper). I was looking also at the Canon D500/450 or one of the Nikon. So my main question is what would you guys suggest? like what was your first camera how well did it work for different types of topics. I either want a Nikon or Canon. just dunno what type :P would be nice if it had video but doesn't matter to much. maybe 3inch screen etc but that doesnt matter to much either. good max/min aperture, ISO and good JPEG/Raw file quality. so any you could suggest open to any suggestions even if its not Nikon or Canon. and if any of you have used the Canon 1000D/500D/450D or Nikon 1000D what are they like :)?I think ive made my mind up and i think im gonna go for Canon D500! but is it any good? more

Resolved Question: I need to buy a DSLR camera, any ideas?

I am doing my art GCSE at the moment and would like to study photography at A-Level too. I was wondering if any of you had any ideas for what DSLR camera I could use. My price range is £100-450. I'd prefer not to have to buy masses of lenses or anything, anything for like 2 lenses and I would mostly be shooting portraits/landscape and macro. I would like it to last for at least 3 years, I know a lot of DSLR cameras will work like a dream for a few months but soon fizzle out. more

Resolved Question: how much would you realistically like to pay for your wedding photography?

I am looking to start up doing wedding photography (I already do portrait work) and have been wondering about my pricing. The question I have is..how much would you ideally like to pay for your wedding photography and what would you like included in that price in terms of CD, album, DVD, etc? more

Resolved Question: What should I do about lenses for the Nikon D90?

I'm getting the Nikon D90 in a few months and I was wondering what to do about lenses. I'm planning on getting a 50mm f1.4(worth the price over the 1.8?) but I want a walk-around lens. The kit-lens will be £100 more but I was wondering about whether to get the 16-85 (for £440) instead? I'm new to DSLRs so I'm not too sure about what sort of photography I'll be into but I'll get the nifty-fifty for portraits. Just general thoughts about whether it's worth it to get the 18-105 for now and then spend the extra £100 further down the line when I know what I want more or if the £100 will just be wasted. Also, will the difference in quality be more inspiring for me do you reckon? If I can get very good photos then personally I think I'll be more likely to carry on with photography but is the difference that great? Any opinions are welcome, Thanks a lot in advance, MattRegarding the 18-200VR, I've looked extensively into it but I've noticed a recurrent theme amongst reviewers about distortion towards the telephoto end. As this is one of its major plus points over the 18-105 it seems flawed to go for it. With the only other reason being the VRII over the VRI. It's also slightly more expensive than the 16-85. It is something I will look into more but what are your views on a 16-85 and 70-300 combo? (that would be a similar price to getting a prosumer end f2.8) thanks for the advice so far. more

Resolved Question: How does this text in English could be rewritten to sound more EnglisH...I am French?

"Gradually, photography became more accessible, and between 1850 and 1870 the middle classes were able to practise photography and have their portraits made. Twenty years later, their children privilege the non-professional photography as a hobby. This democratization doesn't reach workers and still less the farming world which forms the essential of the French population. The arrival of Kodak apparatus made a true revolution. In 1888 George Eastman markets the first Kodak, which includes a roller of one hundred sights at the price of 25 dollars. This was in the United States but soon extended to the rest of the world. Success is immediate because the apparatus makes it possible to be delivered to the joys of the capture of the scene without having the constraint of laboratory work hitherto completed by the photographers themselves. It is enough to send the apparatus to Rochester where, for ten dollars, the photographs are developed and the apparatus reloaded with a new reel. The advertising slogan “Press on the button, we make the remainder” encompassed the new ambitions of the firm: to conquer a vast market beyond the enlightened amateurs. The development of the amateurs stimulates the industry of the cameras and significant surfaces and supports the innovations. The trade and the craft industry related to the portrait are not touched yet, quite to the contrary, the photographers of district taking care of work of laboratory of the amateurs. New businesses of amateurs are constituted." He is the text, thanks for helping more

Voting Question: Wedding photography - any advice?

Hi, I'm a photographer who does mainly portrait photography and am looking to branch into weddings, I am wondering about the best way to get a portfolio established. I have some friends getting married in May and am doing their official photos (for free obviously!) but don't know anyone else getting married this year, and really want to get it established this year so I can actively market my services next year. Does anyone have any experience of how to break into the wedding market? If you are planning on getting married, what would make you consider a photographer with a good portrait photography portfolio but no wedding experience? I have put a half price offer on my website, but am wondering whether offering coverage of 2 weddings for free would work? Any opinions would be very welcome. Many thanks, NigelI am already offering my services for free to build my portfolio but seem to have problems finding people who want a free photographer! Shooting alongside another photographer is a strick no no, it compromises the job for both as people don't know who to look at, follow directions etc.Guys... The point is I do not have any albums or a portfolio! I am an experienced photographer but have as yet not done many weddings. The question is... How do I find people who want a FREE photographer to photograph their wedding so I can build a portfolio. more
