Open Question: Advise for my first Assignment? Casual couple shoot!?
Hi, I am a 15 year old photography enthusiast and have been into this amazing hobby for about a year and a half now. I have a pretty mediocre kit but it has been sufficient at times but it has also not been enough at a number of occasions. I have a Canon EOS 1000D w/ 18-55IS, 75-300USM, 10-24, 50 1.8, Nissin Di622 speedlite. You can see my full kit in my profile on flickr (www.flickr.com/people/kushalshah) I am more of a Nature and wildlife shooter (have covered social events and done a few portrait sessions with family) but recently got requested by my cousin sister to help her take casual couple shots of her with her fiancé as she "like the way I take photos". They will basically be in casual clothes and we will be shooting at a variety of locations nature and urban, night and day. She wants it to be very Candid and Fun, no romance is intended/required. My friend may lend me his 70-200 f4 L. So I wanted to ask you which lens set up would you recommend me to use for the shoot as well as provide some settings that you would recommend as well as share tips and tricks of how I could make the shoot a more successful one. Please do share your valuable advise and am looking forward to read your replies. Thanks! I have had the hardest time trying to find music specially designed for slide shows. I've tried iTunes and some other sources but nothing. I'm a portrait photographer but I recently started doing some weddings and sweet 16's and quinceañeras I want to do some nice slide shows with music. As far as software goes I have what need, all I need is background music. Anyone with some good knowledge about this subject that wouldn't mind sharing it would be nice. Thank you all for your help!!! moreOpen Question: Photography class help?

I got a call back from Sears Portrait Studios and have a interview with them next week. I'm wondering what the photographers there normally make a hour. I have lots of retail/customer service experience and have photography experience. The job is in Massachusetts if that makes any difference(since I know minimum wage here is higher then some places). moreOpen Question: looking for people in brisbane who want pro photography for no cost!?

I am just curious as to what you have your resolution settings set on your camera? I have mine on Large, but another photographer told me it is a waste because I won't be nor will my clients be using all the pixels. But what if they wanted to print a rather large portrait, wouldn't it only turn out great quality with the larger amount of pixels? So I am confused, I do portraits of families, egagements, seniors newborns and more. I also heard that The number of pixels recorded and stored for each image can have an enormous impact on camera performance and resources. Can some one explain this. Thanks and God bless!OHHHH Ok, I understand. moreOpen Question: How do I take professional, model-quality photographs of a model?
Hello, I'm a photographer and I think I'm pretty good, but I've never really done portraits before and I want to try to. A nice girl volunteered to model for me, since she wants pictures for a model portfolio. Do you have any tips? Thanks. moreVoting Question: Photography tips for fashion designer? (Please read!)?
I just need a few pointers... I'm about to open my modified clothing store on ebay that focuses on customized (DIY Punk, Biker, Skate & Psychobilly) band shirts/corsets/dresses. I have a lot of fantastic, original, professional-looking designs and some awesome, gorgeous alternative model volunteers to boot. Although I have faith in my clothing, I know that the best attention-grabber for a product online is good photography. I know a little bit about photography as far as composition and umbrella lighting goes, but what would be some good tips for an amateur who is taking model portraits and fullbody shots indoors? What would be the best lighting for dark clothes? What about lighting for a backdrop of newspapers? If the newspaper idea for a backdrop is too terrible, would you happen to have any other ideas to give a "street fashion" feel? I'm not trying to be a professional photographer, but I do hope to have a professional feel to what I'm selling. Hiring an actual photographer would be out of the question as I produce several unique garments a week and it would be rather costly to do constantly. One last thing: I currently am using a Nikon D40 but I'm also looking for a new lens as my old one finally jammed after three years of use, haha. Any suggestions for someone who isn't looking to spend an outrageous amount for amateur photography? $300 would have to be my limit. I just had a friend suggest using a Nikon 55-200mm DX Lens on my D40. (About $200) What do you think?I'm not trying to be a professional photographer. I just want some tips on taking decent portrait/fullbody pictures featuring the garments I have created. I don't care to buy a terribly expensive camera because that's not my focus. My focus is doing the best with what I have, and trust me, it will be enough. All I need are some general pointers for what I'm trying to accomplish, please.I just found the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras. It's about $100 and it has great reviews for portraits. Opinions? moreVoting Question: What kinds of camera's are really good for pictures like...?

I want something thats less than 1000$ worth though! I think of myself as an aspiring photographer, and i just want to get started with a really nice canon or nikon. thank you for your help!!! I am extremely interested in photography and hope to one day have my own business. Unfortunately, even with my photography classes, I'm very limited in my knowledge of camera attachments such as different types of lenses and off-camera lighting. Are there any good resources to help teach the basics of this kind of thing? I'm interested in portrait photography in particular. I currently have a Canon Digital Rebel xSI but am saving up for a 5D Mark II. While looking at images other people have produced professionally with the same camera as mine, I noticed that it doesn't even look as if the same camera produced those images, the image quality of there's is MUCH better, like it could be in a magazine. This isn't because of amateur faux pas on my part, I have even light and focus and basic photographer knowledge in that area, so why is it that the raw image quality of theirs looks stunning? Is it because of a different lens? Thank you for your help!I do have a very good eye and DO have talent, and I of course manually operate f-stop, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc. my images are properly exposed and framed, and are all touched up in Photoshop. However, I am working with the kit lens and am wondering what this other girl learned to make it look as though her camera is a 20 megapixal quality camera, as opposed to a 12.2.I do have a very good eye and DO have talent, and I of course manually operate f-stop, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc. my images are properly exposed and framed, and are all touched up in Photoshop. I'm kind of an experimental photographer, (going from macro-shoots, to portraits and scenery, but I'm more of a portrait-photographer) and all this time I've been using my dads digital camera. Now that camera is slowly dying, it like, turns off by itself, and shows this weird screen. I dono. And well, I really want a DSLR. but there are so many on the market? I'm about to go to college, so I can't really afford the more expensive ones. I'm looking at a range from £200-£500.. I'm an amateur photographer looking to expand my lens collection. I am going to Ryerson University in September for Photography Studies. My main focuses are portrait and fashion photography, but with school I'll need to do 'general' photography as well. I shoot with a Nikon D5000, an 18-55mm, and 18-105mm lens and I'm unsure as to which to purchase next. I have my eyes on the 18-200mm lens, but I'm curious as to what you guys might think would be best for portrait/fashion/and general photography. I know it's a little broad but I'm a struggling student haha and can't afford my 'ideal' lens collection at this moment in my life. Any help would be greatly appreciated:)Edit: The reason for the duplicated lenses is because the 18-55mm lens was given to me when I got my camera from a relative, and the 18-105mm lens was purcahsed seperately. moreResolved Question: Why do some of us closely resemble ancestors from years ago?
My grandad was a keen photographer and when I died I got his photo collection. As well as his own work there were lots of pictures of his and my nan's parents. I was struck by how closely I resembled some of the women in these photos. Also, when you visit stately homes and see portraits painted hundreds of years ago some of them still look like the current generation. Why is this, surely the gene pool would have been diluted a lot through the generations? Conversely it can also work the other way, I have one daughter that looks so like me it's uncanny and one that looks nothing like any other family member, so much so that I find myself scanning her face for anything I recognise! moreResolved Question: What lens would help me take pictures like this?

I had a professional photographer email me the other day and basically, the point of his message is that no one will take you seriously unless you charge more. What do you think? I charge a $20 session fee for in-home sessions (I bring studio strobes, backdrops, etc). The $20 fee is mainly to cover the babysitter. I charge $5 for 5x7's, $10.00 for 8x10s and wallet sets, and wall portraits I am basically only making about a $30 profit minimum, $50 max Is that too low? How high should I raise them to get them to get "respect" if you think I should raise them? I'd rather shoot and make nothing just to keep in practice than not shoot at all. The only place I really advertise is on craigslist, and I get some business word of mouth, although we've only been living in this state for less than a year so far. He might be right, CL advertising has brought in no business since I lowered my session fee and sold by sheet rather than charging $150 for a disc with 20 + different poses. I just don't really know how much to raise them, or if I really should.. I just want some shoots! And... For the record, I'm a nursing student. As much as I love photography, I know myself enough to know that I'm NOT a salesperson. How much percentage profit is it ok to make once you pay the printers and website commission? I'm only 15, so no job, which means that I don't have that big of a budget. I'm willing to spend up to $500, but if that's not enough for a nice camera, then I'll go higher. I have been playing around with photoshop and I have seen some really neat pictures but I can't figure out what they are called, to look them up. Its where you have one big picture that is kind of faded in the back ground and then a smaller picture up close...I have seen most photographers do this, but can't figure out what it is called to even look up how to do it! Kind of like this: http://www.searsportrait.com/cpi/en-US/products/Fine+Art/Reflections.htm On the sears portraits website its called a reflection, but I can't find anything about how to do it. Thanks in advance! moreResolved Question: What tools do I need to become a professional photographer?

They are generally fashion and portrait, usually that are: - Vintage looking - Glamorous - Beautiful - Inspiring I also occasionally post photographers that inspire me with some of my favorite photographs of theirs. I am looking to do more variations of posts in future, but mainly to do with fashion, photography and my general interests. I need help brainstorming a catchy/eye-catching domain name and title that sounds good but gives a gist of the content. Help? moreVoting Question: ok, so I'm a photographer, and I have a question.?
ok, so someone I'm friends with on facebook, and this person saw that I do photography. They later asked me if I could photograph their kids.. and I get to choose the price.. I'm only 15, and I have been doing photography for like a year... heres, some links, so you guys can determine my level of.. talent? I guess you could say, and I don't know if she wants me to get prints, but if she wants prints or not, can you give me about how much I should charge? http://s817.photobucket.com/albums/zz94/soccer_hunni04/?action=view¤t=000000000.jpg http://s817.photobucket.com/albums/zz94/soccer_hunni04/?action=view¤t=000000000.jpg http://s817.photobucket.com/albums/zz94/soccer_hunni04/?action=view¤t=000000000.jpg http://s817.photobucket.com/albums/zz94/soccer_hunni04/?action=view¤t=000000000.jpg http://s817.photobucket.com/albums/zz94/soccer_hunni04/?action=view¤t=000000000.jpg http://s817.photobucket.com/albums/zz94/soccer_hunni04/?action=view¤t=0000.jpg http://s817.photobucket.com/albums/zz94/soccer_hunni04/?action=view¤t=000.jpg http://s817.photobucket.com/albums/zz94/soccer_hunni04/?action=view¤t=00.jpg http://s817.photobucket.com/albums/zz94/soccer_hunni04/?action=view¤t=00.jpg http://s817.photobucket.com/albums/zz94/soccer_hunni04/?action=view¤t=00aa.jpg&newest=1 And I've never really done "portraits" but I have done bugs, and bunnies, as shown in the pictures above. so.. please help! and thank you! moreResolved Question: What do you think of portraits that are tilted?
I've been seeing a lot of things like senior portraits, wedding photos, etc. taken on a tilt... most of the time it kind of bothers me (it seems gimmicky sometimes, too), but every now and again I'll see one that looks really great. I'm wondering if I should try taking some portraits this way. Here's some examples of what I'm talking about: http://www.flickr.com/photos/digitalimpressions/3034327812/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/carlzochphotography/2981661717/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/lyzaroderick/4248813628/ (a lot of senior portrait photographers in my area tend to take it to the level of this last example, so that's what I'm really talking about... where the person is shooting straight out of a corner) So, opinions? moreResolved Question: Photographers: When can you take credit for a photo?
I take photos as a hobby. I don't have a tripod so sometimes when i'm doing a self portrait I ask people to hold the camera for me. I tell them how to crop it and what to focus on, as well as coming up with the concept and props. Normally, they don't know how to use my camera and i have to do alot of editing. Basically, I use them as a human tripod. I'll mention that it was taken by someone else but still take credit fot it. Is that ok? When is it crossing the line? When can you not take credit for a photo? moreResolved Question: What are the most "annoying" questions you've answered?
For all of the serious photographers and contributors, what's the most annoying question you've answered? Not the troll questions, those are meant to be annoying and are sometimes funny. I'm talking about the standard ones. Am I cute? How good are my photos? Will my P&S create incredible wedding images? Just a quick recap of the question, and a brief summary of why you thought it was so bad, no need to link to it or put names in. My 2 answers- The girl who asked if she could make a living out of taking pictures like these- The pictures were self portraits, with scribbling on her hands. Not just are they good, can I sell them, but actually make a living at it, that's what amazed me. The recent high school grad who wanted to shoot for National Geographic- "Do I need to take classes, as I already know so much about photography." I've been shooting for years, and can still learn more about photography. That's the reason for me to answer questions, to read things other people say and learn more. moreResolved Question: About photography prices?
Hi, i was wondering if some professional photographers, could help me with something. I have just started up, and have all the gear etc..., but what worries me, is what to charge for different photo styles, example from say pet portraits to birthdays etc etc... I'm not trying to then beat your prices, but just get an insight t how you all started and the prices you used. I ask so not to under quote myself, nor to ripoff the client. I'm not worried in what you charge now, but a starting point. My photos will be printed up by another company. I know alot will say, depends on the shoot and this and that, but just a ball park figure. Maybe a list like "for example"... portraits = $$$ an hour, birthdays about $$$ an hour. I take good photos, and need this business to survive, for i have spent alot of money on it, i now need to make some...can you help me please, thanks. moreResolved Question: Will the Nikon D3000 take professional-like photos?
I just want to know if any professional photographers use the Nikon D3000 for inside portrait photography. After spending TONS of money on my 1-year-old's portraits last year, I decided that I wanted to give it a go and try it myself. I have always had a photography interest but have never taken classes, etc. I did alot of photo editing (photoshop) in college and that sparked my interest in photography. Anyways... I was thinking of toddler portraits outdoors and in an inside studio (with proper lighting, backdrops, etc). Anyone have experience with Nikon D3000. I'm looking to get the 55-200mm lens also. THANKS!wow...after reading some other responses on "answers," as well as my own, I see you photographers are very touchy people. I get it people! It takes talent, patience, and a deep understanding of the camera and photography. I understand a camera, itself will not take good pictures. I def. believe I have talent, creativity and a beautiful subject (my daughter.) To say my question is a joke....is a joke. To others who answered by question without judgment...thank you!oh, and I was looking to get the macro lens because I've read when photography children outdoors, it is easier to stand back and let them do their own thing without feeling surrounded. I guess it really is a preference of the photographer... maybe I'll try it without the macro first before I buy it.BUT...you can't take a picture without a camera...so stop with all this "cameras dont take pictures, people do" stuff. Am I really crazy to think that even if you are the best of the best (photography wise), you would not take the best picture with a little $50 pocket camera or camera phone. So lets assume I have some talent....is the Nikon D3000 a good choice for a professional photographer?? moreVoting Question: What should I do for my career?
this sounds so stupid, but i am not just asking you to tell me a random career. i love kids so i would love to teach or be a child physcologist. i also love singing and i am good (at least thats what people tell me) so i would love to sing. i also love photography so i would love to be a portrait photographer. i also love to be creative, so i would love to be an interior decorator/designer. lastly i love modeling and being IN the pictures so i would love to be a model!!! moreResolved Question: If you did an alter ego photo shoot with Derek Blanks, what would the photo look like?
For an alter ego photo, you're dressed and made up as two or more characters who represent different sides of your personality. The photographer shoots the alter egos in different poses, then creates a composite photo of the characters interacting. What would your alter egos be and what would they be doing?Examples: http://urie.wordpress.com/2008/07/17/derek-blanks-alter-ego-portraits/http://www.dblanks.com/ moreResolved Question: Where can I buy a sundress for my senior portrait?

Hey! I am thinking about getting my picture taken. Maybe some portraits, model themed or something else I am not sure yet. I found this photographer by reading an ad they put up on craigslist. Do you think I should go for it or keep looking? P.S The pictures are for me...I haven't had my picture taken professionally since highschool. Here are some links. Thanks everyone! http://echoimagery.wordpress.com/ http://echoimagery.weebly.com/ moreResolved Question: Why are they getting a D-SLR?
For my friend's mom's birthday, she had wanted a good camera. They bought her a bridge camera but my friend hated it. I don't understand why though, it was pretty nice. So they returned it and they wanted my help selecting a D-SLR. At first the price range was low so I suggested the D3000, k-x or Xsi. But now they're considering the D3000, T1i or D5000, but most likely the D40. Apparently a family friend has the D40 and my friend tried it out and thought it was a good camera. My other friend was there at the time and said to me "It's a good camera, like you can take those portraits where the background is blurred and the pictures look really nice". I don't understand why they're getting this, the mom who it's really for has no time to take a course and learn it. My friend (her daughter) never commits to anything and won't learn (she's the one pushing them towards this). They plan on buying an expensive lens for it too. I spent my hard earned money to buy my D-SLR and I'm working as hard as I can to learn to take proper photos. They have the money... but it seems like they think it's going to make them into brilliant photographers. "Owning a Nikon doesn't make you a photographer, it makes you a Nikon owner". Anyone else so frustrated by this? I don't understand why it bugs me so much... moreWelcome to Portrait Photographer News
