Resolved Question: How much should I charge for my photography services and products?

People have seen my work and have been asking me left and right to shoot their kids, weddings, events, etc. for them and have even been contacted by some professionals to second-shoot with them. I would like to go into the photography business but am not sure how much I should be charging people for my services and for my prints. Any suggestions? I don't want to price too high to start off with, but I am already getting a lot of requests to shoot, so I don't want to price myself too low either. What do you think about the following: *$50/hour (photographer's service fee) *4x6 prints ($5.00) *5x7 prints ($15.00) *8x10 prints ($25.00) *DVD of digital negatives: $150 for portraits (50-80 images with personal print rights) *DVD of digital negatives: $500 for weddings (500-800 images with personal print rights) *Albums priced at various prices, depending on the album chosen. I guess my real question is how much to mark up the photos and services? All photographers mark up their prices, but I'm not sure HOW MUCH to mark mine up since I'm new to this. I guess I have talent since I'm getting so many photo requests, but am not sure what to charge for it. more

Resolved Question: First time taking portraits? Critique?

My friend asked me to take her senior portraits. I'm not charging her because one, she's one of my best friends and two, I'm not a professional photographer, I'm an amateur. But I've never taken portraits. I'm more of a street/miscellaneous photographer. We went outside yesterday and took practice shots. But we went during the worst part of the day, the sun was very strong. Any advice on this? On how to properly expose the sky AND her when shooting at about 3 o'clock. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2718/4442530721_7ce117f0df.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2634/4442531059_f9679cd729.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2713/4442532129_97d9e963d7.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4001/4443308410_6e186ac306.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2721/4442531783_c4f43186d1.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2706/4443308740_17130f0ff4.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4071/4443309244_c4a6426360.jpg I know I definitely made a few mistakes on these with the shadows, and I knew I was going to, which is why I told her since it was my first time taking portraits, that we should do a practice shoot. So any advice/critique for next time? We're taking them next week and I'll make sure to go out either early in the morning or later in the day, so I don't get the harsh shadows. These are the types of photos I'm use to shooting. http://www.flickr.com/photos/38951506@N06/And I haven't edited these yet. Only one is edited.Bill: Yeah, that is exactly what happened. She would squint in every picture taken in the sunlight. There was literally not a cloud in the sky, it was so beautiful out. And it caused harsh shadows. Thanks for the advice. Joedlh: For the one on the bench, I wanted the sun to be behind her, I liked the effect and that was the only bench in the park. But for the the third to last one (with the tree), that wasn't my intention. I didn't realize it until after. more

Resolved Question: Nikon D5000 vs. Nikon D90, which camera gives you the better "bang for the buck"?

We are looking at these two cameras for use photographing portraits and sporting events. We are getting mixed remarks about which is better. Does the camera body make the difference, or is it all in the lens? We are novice photographers that are hoping to get much more involved and want to purchase the right camera for our needs. Any other brands along with your rationale are appreciated as well. more

Resolved Question: What is or are your FAVORITE camera or cameras and why? (This question is for ALL photographers)?

Your favorite camera can be a Kodak stereoscopic, a Nikon DSLR or a Linhof 617 panoramic film camera but would I would like to know is what is YOUR favorite camera (relative to the purpose you use it for) and why? You can include more than one answer to this as perhaps you like a Tele Rolleiflex TLR for portraits and a Nikon D3 for sports. I know that no camera does it all so I want to see what other people LOVE in their cameras and why they do. Currently I have a Canon G10, two Yashica FX-2's, and a Yashica Mat 124G. I am looking to expand my collection and am interested in seeing what other people like and why. Thanks! more

Voting Question: My photos could be ads for certain companies. How do I sell the photos to them?

I am a semi-pro photographer (I get paid for it) who loves to take various photos just for fun. I'm working on a self-portrait project at the moment, and a lot of these photos involve certain products and/or company logos, etc. I'm constantly told that these companies should pay me for my photos (by people who don't really know what they're talking about, but still). Is this possible? For example, I've taken a photo of myself at Target, where their logo is visible and their decor is the main focus ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/minervana/4425745837/ ). I would love to know if it's normal/acceptable/possible to maybe email someone in charge of Target ads and have them look at the photo. But then what do I say as far as asking them if they wanna pay me for this photo? I would have put this in 'Photography' but I'm curious to see what responses I would get from the business/advertisement category :) Thanks so much in advance! more

Resolved Question: baby, toddler, and children portraits?

how much do you spend on portraits? where do you have them done? and for what occasions? i pay a lot of money for my daughters pictures, i usually have them done at the mall. but after this last photography session i dont think we'll be going back there. i decided to buy a professional studio backdrop and lighting kit for my brother, who is in college and has studied photography for 3 years, i would have had him do her portraits earlier but he never had the money to open a studio. he has a really expensive camera already. so i told him to open a portable portrait studio to make some extra money and so i could have her pics taken whenever i need to. what would you consider a reasonable price for an in home professional photography session? and what would make you want to use a photographer instead of the 1 hour photo at the mall? more

Resolved Question: Photography and schooling, want professional photographers opinions.?

I have been doing lots of photography work for about 3 years now. Just now have I taken it to a professional level and started doing portrait photography for families, children, couples and more. Although I like to do nature photography, I feel like I specialize more in portrait photography. To me, I am rather good with what I do with what little schooling I have had with photography. College is not an option right now, and most likely won't be for a few years due to lack of money. I do, however, take a lot of free online 'classes' and read alot about it. I don't take the classes to learn how to take pictures, I can do that wonderfully with just my talent, I like to learn more about exposure, camera settings, lighting, and other tips and suggestions. My problem is that a lot of people think to be a photographer you have to have schooling and lots of it. I am also fairly young, almost 19. I have the professional equipment that my husband and I bought prior to advertising my work, and I have a lot of experience. I think the pictures and your professionalism should prove it self when I do a person or families shots, but the thing is, I get a lot of people who look past me because of my lack of schooling and age. My prices are extremely cheap, below $100, mostly below $75, and I am confident in my work. What tips would you give me to bring in more customers? I am in the process of learning GIMP and continue reading all about new things with photography. Is there any PROFESSIONAL photographers on here that have made it where they want with out schooling? I am not going to post any of my work, because I believe every one will have their own opinions and I am already confident with what I do. Thanks so much to you all!Alright, I will post some of my work if it is that important. I charge so cheap because I feel like with my age and lack of schooling I probably can not get what I think my work is worth quite yet. Here is a post to my blog with most of my work. http://shoryphotography.blogspot.com/By the way, what is this "it" you speak of that I am so full of?http://s802.photobucket.com/albums/yy305/shorylovephotography/ So you can enlarge the pictures. Resolved Question: How long do I have to keep the negatives of past clients?

I retired several years ago from wedding and portrait photography. I have tried to reach some of my clients but it is very time consuming. I am willing to send them what I have on file, but most people have moved or are divorced. I was told by another photographer that if I post and ad in the local newspaper announcing my retirement and telling people that they can have their negatives for free if they contact me is all I have to do. After the set time alloted I can then destroy the negatives. That sounds a little harsh to me but I need to clear out the files in storage. Any suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Which is a Good Entry Level DSLR Camera?

I want to upgrade my point and shoot Camera to a DSLR. I have the Nikon CoolPix P80, it looks like a DSLR camera but it’s a point and shoot. I'm a amateur photographer, I like to do close up shots, portraits, architectural and so on. I'm looking to getting a entry level DSLR camera, and I need advice to which one I should get. Originally I want to get the Nikon D90, but honestly, I don’t have the $1200.00 to fork over. So I’m looking into getting either the Nikon D5000 or the Cannon Rebel XS, both have similar price range that I can afford, and the reviews are great for each, but I can’t make up my mind to which one I should buy. Is it fine to use the 70-200mm USM (USM only not IS USM) for portrait and sports photography or should I just use a 85mm 1.8 and a 50mm 1.8 OR 1.4 for portrait and sports photography? 2. Resolved Question: Of all the photography pros (or even semi-pros here) who has heard of and/or been to WPPI?

For those reading but have no clue, WPPI is Wedding and Portrait Photographers International. This year is their 30th anniversary in fabulous Las Vegas. (Okay, I'm biased. I live in Vegas.) I'm attending their tradeshow for the FIRST time and man is it overwhelming. Just thought I would I ask who knows of and/or has been to one of their events. It's a lot of fun and full of incredible information (and who can argue with free stuff too?). For those who have gone, what did you think of it? On another note, I had a chance to shoot as a secondary shooter at my first wedding recently and WOW. While I had fun and only shot for 2 - 2.5 hours with my friend as the primary shooter it was overwhelming to say the least. My feet were killing me and I was tired when I got home. Yea, still on the fence over whether I'll be crazy enough to do that again. more

Resolved Question: Planning for the future, second job?

Photography is my passion. I want to work in a studio, darkroom, portraits, the like. But I was looking at the wages in my state for a wide percentile of photographers' wages and I wasn't exactly satisfied. Would it be dumb or naive to consider looking for another part-time job? And if not, what are some of your suggestions? And for the record, because I know that sometimes it depends, I'm a female freshman in high school, looking forward to Photo 1 next year, then Photo 2 and 3 every year. I play three different instruments and am extremely musically inclined, and my favorite subjects are history and math. This may give you an idea if you wanted my key interests, should you be so kind as to suggest some part-time jobs to hit a satisfying wage. Thanks so much, and I will reward 10 points to the answer that helps most!I've used my state CIS website through school and home to find out all that I have found about the photography career path. more

Resolved Question: how do you feel about simply giving away copies of your wedding photos of family and friends to those who ask?

we paid a fair amount for our photographer and some family members are asking for copies of the photos of themselves from the wedding which is fine, but i'm almost being made to feel that it's my job to make sure they get a picture. normally i wouldn't mind but my photographer happens to be a friend and he mentioned to me about one aunt and uncle making a point of having him wait until all their kids were around to do a 'family shot' of them all dressed up rather than the relaxed 'un-posed-for' shots that i was hoping for. is it just me or does that seem an odd request at somebodys wedding? now they're asking me to send them a larger than average print of that 'family pic'. and mentioning this to another family member, the response i got was 'well do i get one of me and my kids as well then? oh thats lovely'. i almost feel like saying - its a pic from my wedding not a free family portrait of your day out so it's staying in the wedding album' but i feel really nasty by feeling that way. it wouldn't hurt to get a cheapy copy done at a supermarket but these are my wedding day photos, and i feel like they're being treated as a free way of getting a dressed up family pic. even my step mother copied them to her laptop without asking. my photographer didn't password protect the disk because he is a friend and i feel like that fact is being abused. i know i'm over-reacting to a certain extent here but is it just me or are people taking the mickey a little? more

Not really sure where to go with it for photography but some portrait-ish photographers i can look at would be kool if you know any? Resolved Question: does this seem like a fair price for wedding photography?

Based on the information you provided, below is my recommended coverage for your wedding photography. In thanking you for your consideration, I have applied deep discount on the pricing. Also, I waved the travel expenses and the design fee for the DVD slideshow. I have a couple of weddings to shoot in April and May. I would ask you to wait and see how your engagement photos come out and the wedding photos I take in April and May to decide if you want to hire me for your wedding photography or not. ^_^ $840 (70% off original price of $2800) v Pre-event consultation v 8~10 hours photography for getting ready, ceremony, portraits, and reception v Unlimited photography during time hired v Assistant / second photographer v Online image proof v Images with retouching and artistic effects v High resolution images on CD with personal rights v DVD wedding slideshow with music this person is a professional portait photographer just starting out in weddings. She is doing our engagement photo session for free this monday, giving us a photo dvd with personal rights for printing. What do you think?? I fear that almost 900 for someone with very limited wedding experience is sorta steep. I hate the idea of bargaining with someone over their "craft" (i feel its a lot different to bargain for a car, house etc.) however I cant help but think man, almost a grand on someone who hasnt really got any experience seems crazy more

Resolved Question: Want Ad for a Knowledgeable Photographer...?

Resolved Question: Canon Lenses: EF 135mm f/2.8 wtih soft focus OR EF 85mm f/1.8 USM lens? Good for people/portrait photography?

I'm found these two lenses which I really seem to like, but I don't know which one to use. I'm an advanced amateur photographer, been into the field for 3 years and still loving it. I'm having a self-project and I want to take elbow-legth/waist to head images of people. There are two of them on the question, which one should help me for a good portrait photography of somebody? Here are the websites on the US canon page. I chose the 135mm because of it's soft focus ability and how beautiful the picture of that person would be because of the soft focus, but I might be wrong. And the 84mm because of it's good ability to zoom in a bit, and capture such a good stunning portrait of a person. 85mm: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=152&modelid=7311 135mm: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=153&modelid=7308 Please help me, I really want to get my self-project done with beautiful portrait images of people. more

Voting Question: How much should I pay an amateur photographer for family portraits?

My close friend's teenage daughter takes excellent photos, and wants to pursue a career in photography. I want to ask her if she's interested in taking a few photos of my little family, and am wondering how much I should offer to pay her. I would like to pay her for her time, use of her camera, and for any editing. I will pay for prints to be done at a local place that does photo printing.Like I said, she is an excellent photographer. Her work could definitely pass for that of a professionals. She is passionate about photography and it shows. If I weren't impressed, I'd offer her 20 bucks and call it good, but it's not like that. Hence why I'm asking what you think. more
