Voting Question: I love film, and acting, but am tossing up between all these possibilities for the future/a career. Help?

Yeah, so i'm 15 now and going into year 11 in a few months, and ideally my passion lies in acting. I guess I can remember scripts really well (photographic memory) and i can be funny, do voices, sing, etc. But, i have just been informed that the year 11 and 12 drama classes won't be running, by which i am completely gutted. So, i'm considering taking up outer-school drama classes. My main problem area is, when at school we are asked "what do you want to do?" and "what university course are you going to do?" i always answer by saying i'm going to be some sort of artist or photographer, because this is probably what i'm a lot better at, and (without being complacent or vain at ALL) i'm probably one of the better/best ones in the school at it i guess. So, art and photography for me, is much more likely to be a sustainable and guaranteed career, as i've always had a talent for it i guess. (well, thats what my non-art teachers say) I would definitely do some form of art in theatre like prop or set design or something if i were to become that sort of artist, but its just not the same... But my heart still goes "my gosh, become an actress! get into theatre!" because i just love it so much, and i watch people like Meryl Streep, true legends, and think of how much i would love to become great at something like that. (and no, i wouldn't do it for the vanity, or "becoming famous" as many girls do. I would be a character actress, not a looks actress if that makes sense at all.) So my question is, as i have to make up my mind quite soon, what would be a comprehendible choice? Art (photography, set design) or acting/performing art? Mind says art (even though drama is an art too, but i mean visual arts) and heart says drama/acting/theatre. WHAT DO I DO?!?! Please help! and thankyou :) more

Resolved Question: New To Photography Tips Please?

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone had some tips for an amateur photographer such as myself starting out. Im interested in artistic portrait photography. At the weekend I took some photos of a friend in costume, with various props like feathers in hair, mirrors, skulls etc.. Anyway, my downfall was I didn't have good lighting as the house lights are too yellow and the flash was much too strong. I can imagine real photographers reading this are cringing so I do apologise for butchering the art, but I am here to learn. I would be very greatful for any tips on aperture settings, modes, anything at all or even what bulbs i could use in lamps to harmonise the light like a studio. Do white sheets reflect well ? Anyway keeping in mind im on a low budget so I cant go out buying studio lights just yet. So I need home made fixes if there are any. I really appreciate any answers and will give 10 POINTS to a good answer. Thanks more

Resolved Question: How much to charge for taking pictures for people?

I have been some photography over the past few years as a hobby and have recently been getting asked to do pics for alot of people. Several senior pic sessions, some baby photos, and weddings and family pics. My question is how much should I charge? of course I am no professinal but I do feel the quality of my pictures is very compariable to some professional photos I have seen. I dont have a studio or all the big fancy equipment. But I do have a backdrop stand and several different backgrounds and props that i use. I use photo editing programs to crop and do all kinds of neat things with each photo. As far as the area that I live, its not a big city, just a small town, so Im obviously not looking to make a living off taking pictures, but I do feel like my time and effort is worth something. Any suggestions appreciated! :) more

Resolved Question: HELP! I need some help with a concept for a photography shoot!?

Hello my wonderful Yahoo Friends!!!!, I need your help! I'm an on-location photographer and I need your opinions... August 7th will be a fun day for me, I have a shoot that includes 15 BFF's... YUP all of them...together in one location.... (what have I got myself into?) Anyway, when I heard from my client I got really excited and my head started spinning in many different directions full of ideas... I've come with several different concepts for their shoot but I was hoping I could get your opinions: Concept #1 - Shopping Day (A shoot full of props such as shopping bags, shoes, cool shades, bold colors, jewelry and so on. Concept#2 - Picnic Day at the Park (You get the idea of this one, cloth on the floor, picnic basket, sundresses....) Concept #3 - A Day at the Barn/Farm (Cowboy boots, hats, tractors, hay stacks, rakes...) They are all between 18-19 years old, they were in the drill team in their school but they don't really want anything with "drill team" in it.. she says they have plenty of pics like that! HELPPPP ME! LOL more

Resolved Question: I have Ivy League questions... please help?

I'm a student from Eastern Europe (Poland) which now belongs to the European Union, which gives us more prospectives. I attend an IB school, I just finished my freshman year and I plan to go to one of the Ivy League universities, if I get in. 1) My academic results have been great so far. I finished with a 6.1 average, out of possible 7.0. I did very good on my final exams, scoring 5/6 and 6/6 on all of them except one, where I had 4/6. I got an award for outstanding achievement in art, math and humanities. I participated in photography club, drawing skills and sets and props club. In the coming years, I'm planning to do even better academically and do even more after school to widen my interests (drawing, painting, writing, learning about medicine, windsurfing, community and service). Do I have chances of getting in based on this? I know it's not the entire thing, but if I continue this way until I'm a senior, would I? 2) I know that I would have to take the SATs apart from my IB exams. How long does the preparation take? Are they hard? I heard you need at least 2100 overall points to enter any Ivy League university. Would I be able to get that with an IB education? 3) I know that Harvard grants you a full scholarship if your family income is less than $60,000 a year. What about other universities? 4) I work quite hard to achieve my results and I have everlasting stocks of enthusiasm and I will work until I achieve what I want. I know that I can work even harder than that to achieve a good score in the SATs. Are those values important to Ivy League? I heard they are. 5) I associate my future with med school, but if I get into an Ivy League uni, I would do something concerning business or economics, maybe human resources or even internal design. I might continue with medicine, I don't know yet. 6) Except for good academic results, a lot of extra-curricular activities, good SAT scores, personal essays and recommendation, what else is there that Ivy League universities appreciate? THANK YOU! :) more

Resolved Question: If you were me what would you want for your birthday?!?

My birthday is soon and I already have a big gift in mind (a underwater digital camera) but I need some other smaller gift idea's to give to family and friends. I'm going to list the things that I'm interested in and I'm hoping that some of you have heard of/or own some fun gadgets, toy's, accessory's, ext. that I might want!! I'm interested in... - Art (Drawing, Painting, Sketching, Sculpture) - Photography (I have a Nikon SLR camera) - Travel - Books (mostly teen fiction; Harry Potter, Twilight, things like that. *However: I'm not looking for book recommendations mainly. If you have a few that's fine but I already got a large batch of books from a friend) - Anything Joss Whedon (I own all his dvd's and comic books already however) - World of Warcraft/Kingdom Hearts - Extra Nerdy-ness (This is very broad because I thought I might get some good gadget/toy suggestions from this one. I like a lot of games, internet, science fiction tv shows. Total nerdy things like that. :) ) - Film (no dvd's please but I love film and movie making. Acting, props, set design and things like that.) I put a lot of the main things I'm interested in, some I already have most of the items that might be suggested (like the "joss whedon" catagory) but I thought I'd list them anyways in case you guys know of something cool and unique that I haven't seen yet. That's really the kind of stuff I'm looking for, unique fun slightly cheaper items. A little more about me to help... - turning 20 - studio arts major - girl The price range is something around 1$ to about...I'll say $100 to be safe but its mostly 50$ish since I already have a large item picked out. Thanks for your help guys!!! I'm totally curious to see what everyone comes up with. Again thanks in advance. :) more

Resolved Question: Nikon D3000 camera lenses; is it worth it?

I have a Nikon D3000 and my birthday is comming up soon, I was thinking of asking for a new camera lense. This summer I am planning on doing photoshoots with people almost every week. By photoshoots I mean inside with props... for example... http://browse.deviantart.com/photography/people/?order=24&offset=48#/d2qyrx4 http://browse.deviantart.com/photography/people/?order=24&offset=120#/d2qyi64 http://browse.deviantart.com/photography/people/?order=24&offset=144#/d2qz2ar ehhh, I hope the idea came across somewhat well. I would like to go far into the meaning and detail like.. Say I am doing a photo shoot and I do the make-up elaborate for a friend, and then I have props.. say the photoshoot is an old lady knitting okay. I want a camera lense that will focus on the yarn, and person, and needles make them clear and not blurred. Im sure is possible. Is that basically the technique of the photographer or does the lense help. I have been trying to do research but I cannont find information that seems very useful to me. Basically I am asking does the lense make a big difference and if so what lense would be suggested for taking pictures of people detailed. And is is worth the money. I have the lense that came with the camera obviously. heh. Well, thanks for the answers. more

Resolved Question: Photo shoot props; cheap and easy to get a hold of?

I'm going to college in September (YAY :D) and I'm doing a photography A Level and have been told that they'd like me to have a portfolio prepared. I have a lot of pictures already but they've asked for a wide variety and I have barely any people! A couple of friends (two girls and one boy) are interested in modeling and are more than happy to help out so people aren't the problem but I'd like to do some kind of.. abstracty photography and some like.. random props would be useful (for one idea, I'd quite like a plain arm chair that I can take into a forest for example) but I don't know where I could get those things and without spending excess money? Any ideas? I've thought about maybe keeping an eye out for stuff in skips but I seem to remember reading in one of my photography magazines that there are laws about that kinda stuff? ( Also, if you have any general tips for photoshoots, please do tell (: ) more

Resolved Question: Was there a better response I could have given to the preacher?

Okay, I was photographer at a wedding in a church I do not belong to. I could tell the pastor performing the ceremony obviously did not like me from the start, and when I was doing an artsy photo of the wedding rings on an open Bible he cam up to me and basically told me that using the Bible as a photography prop was blasphemy. Well, I had enough of him by that point, and told him I didn't recall seeing anything like that anywhere in the scripture, but he might do well to refamiliarize himself with Matthew chapter 7. Were there any other Bible passages I could have used that would have been better then that, or is there some other way I should have handle the situation? I mean really, the photographer gets paid a lot more than the preacher at a wedding anyway. more

Voting Question: New business as of 1/1/10- LLC What now with taxes?

I am working on starting my business as of 1/1/10 for Photography and I am getting an LLC for the business. I heard somewhere that I can deduct 100% of my expenses, camera, stands, lights, props, gas to clients home, etc. I understand I can deduct these things if I keep receipts, but how much of that would I actually see helping my taxes? I don't know if there is a benefit to starting a new business right now with our economy but I don't know where to start. This is a serious question so please don't give me any stupid or useless answers. Resolved Question: Help, I'm lost and don't want to waste my money!!!?

Hi, I am looking into opening an amateur portrait studio. I worked as a portrait photographer for CPI Corp (Wal-Mart portrait studios) for almost 5 years. I loved my job. When I had my third child in 2008 I had to quit work. I want to work again but because of the kids I have little time and studios like that require a very flexible schedule. I live in a small town and there are not many photography opportunities around here. In studios like those you do not really mess with the camera at all its done Through computers This left me loving to take the portraits and not knowing how to compose them. What I plan on doing is slowly gathering my studio equipment and becoming familiar with it. When my children are old enough to start pre k in 3 years I will have enough experience and equipment to start a studio professionally. I already have a space for the studio and some customers that have followed me from working at CPI. Hopefully by the end of those 3 years I can gain a few more clients and a bit more experience. My question is where do I need to start? I have a Nikon D100 But my lens has something on it I can’t get off so I know I need to replace the lens what type is best for Basic portraiture. I know that I will need lighting so what should I get first and where is the best place to look online? As far as backgrounds go I plain on getting 10x20 in white and black muslin and green Chroma Key to use with digital backgrounds and props are the digital backgrounds even worth trying? I want to work allot with babies where can I find infant posers and seats? Any advice on unique poses and props for young children and new borns would be great. I know allot about posing but I know that I have allot to learn about lighting and camera functions ect.. I thank you all in advance for any info you can give. Happy New Year!!! more

Resolved Question: Managing The Pre-photoshoot?

OK, I consider myself a fairly advanced photographer, I have fair to good skills with lighting, I have a strong concept of camera control, and understand a good deal about composition, and I feel its time to start pushing myself photographically. I especially want to start moving towards more high production conceptual photography. I have some Major Questions in regard to this area, and would like some resources, or information pointing me in the right direction. Key thing to know, I have NO budget, and for now anything I would do would be for learning/experience/art. So Here are the Basics Questions 1: Sets: how do you find great locations, particularly indoors- will realtors work with me to provide locations in exchange for trade? if I see a house I like is it considered appropriate to approach the owner and ask about using the property? Etc. 2: Models: I know about model mayhem, and places of that nature, what other resources are there? 3: Props/costumes: I obviously have no money to outright buy props/costume so how do I come by these things? how much should I expect models to provide? 4: Stylist/makeup artists: I don't know anything about this, how would I find people interested and willing to provide services- are prints for trade the way to go, or the ability to have a name credit on the work for something at this level considered fair compensation. 5: anything else you think I should have asked in this post but did not? more

My income for the year was much less than my expenses. What forms do I need to fill out to deduct all of my equipment purchases? At first I thought I just had to do the Schedule C, but then as I started to go through the Sch C, I find out about the Form 4562. I don't see a spot on Sch C for Equipment purchases, where does this go? Thanks for your assistance. I'd like to try to do this myself this year vs. taking it to a CPA which is going to cost me 300-500. more
