Open Question: getting into photography?

Does anyone have any pointers for getting started in the photography business without paying thousands of dollars for years of schooling? I've taken a class in high school (7 yrs ago) and have been taking pictures and making presentations unprofessionally since then with a lot of positive comments. I need to know more about the business side of things, and then maybe tips on composition, lighting and effects. Are there any clinics, seminars or groups I could attend/join? Thanks! more

We have quite a few around her now like that, its a trend that is catching on. I think she was better off for it. Open Question: How to make my own portfolio for art school?

i'm doing IB in school and i'm in my first year, and i've chosen film as my group 6 in at standard level, and i really regret not choosing visual arts aswell. although i am terrible at drawing and skill painting and the conventional art forms, i very much enjoy photography, and all the other art forms that this course embodies. i think i want to go to an art school for uni, or at least attend a course pertaining to art, such as digital media or communication design. however to do this a portfolio of my art work is a required, but since i do not take art... should i take art classes or something? or do it by myself? because doing that would require lots of resources... anyone got any advice or recommendations on what i could do? thanks. more

In my ballet class, we are doing a creative project that relates to our student choreography's theme. The theme for my group is "Letting go and moving on" and I have to create something art related to that. I thought of doing digital art work (photoshop) and just editing a picture, but I had issues with finding the right picture. I thought of painting a picture, but again I couldn't think of anything that relates with letting go and moving on. I am good at photography, but the same issue comes up, what should I photograph? The things we can do for visual arts are: painting, drawing, digital art work,photography, sculpture, or a media piece. I am good at most of these but the last two. Resolved Question: Do you feel like you don't belong anywhere...any group sharing a common interest?

Not talking about teenage angst. I'm much older and I just don't feel like I belong to anything/anywhere. I love science, but not smart enough to run w/ that group. I like photography, but am a amateur. I just don't excel at anything. I think I'm an interesting person...but do tend to love logic and so not the most exciting person. I just don't relate to my friends anymore, so I've pretty much stopped doing things w/ them. I want to ;progress on my spiritual journey, but it's not w/ religion, so there isn't a place for me to go to talk about stuff like that. Voting Question: What is the ideal camera to get started as a photographer for a wide range of subjects?

I want to get a better camera. I have a point and shoot for every day, and a Polaroid just because I like them, but I would like to get into more professional photography. My subjects usually are moving (animals, children, groups of people) so I want as little blur as I can get away with. Also, I don't want a lot of delay between pictures. I also would like to be able to get a wide angle lense for it. Also, digital. I know that traditional photograph creation has it's place but it's not with me yet. Theres a group of about 5 people, I went to secondry school with them, we wern't friends but we didn't hate each other, then we went to college... and now on facebook I keep hearing second hand, and seeing comments they write to each other, making fun of me.. I do fashion photography, and I see them write things to each other like ''HAHAHA fashion photography'' and really sarcastic things... Im proud of the fashion work Ive done... :/ I wouldn't go make fun of other people, so I don't know why there doing this to me... It also annoys me, they don't ever ever say it to my face at college or wherever... I have to discover it or be told by someone ''they've been talking about you'' I just wish the idiots would grow up, were all 17-18 years old now... :/ I'd remove them all on facebook, but I think that would make things worse, I just wish they wouldn't see me as their target.. just because I like to do fashion photography and Im not scared to upload the pictures for all to see, and I like things that most guys don't.. Resolved Question: Question about a guy I'm crushing on and currently talking to. Does he like me or not? What else should I know?

Here it goes: So there is this guy who I'm talking to. We didn't know each other at all, had no classes together, or lunch together, but I always wanted to talk to him, he looked like a humble guy, someone different and not to talk about very good looking. So for the next week, my friends were trying to help me out by giving me motivation, because I AM a VERY shy girl when it comes to men. And it took one of my friends to go tell him without me knowing that i wanted to talk to him (which scared the living peaches out of me) and I thought he was just going to walk away from that, but actually did want to talk to me as well, but on that day I left early and he approached me two days later when he had school. He looked hella nervous before he came to talk to me, and looked like he was about to walk away but then he said my name and that's where it all started (I had added him on my facebook, which is how he knows my name). I mean we talked and he asked me for my number. he text me the next day and we text for 8-9 hours straight. And it went very well. And we don't text often, and I kinda like that. We usually talk in person during school, and I give him a laugh sometimes in our convos and we basically talk about anything. At first it was getting to know each other questions. I mean whenever we text or talk, they're long convos, and I really enjoy talking to him, I mean, I guess I kinda like him now :]] But sometimes he doesn't text me and I text him. The last time i spoke to him was on a Friday and it's Sunday now. He hasn't text me since, and sometimes I wonder if I should text him, but I don't want to be obsessive, like text him every god dam hour and annoying him. I mean, I know I would hate that. And sometimes I feel maybe he doesn't like me, but then again he looked for me and sat down with me this Friday and we spoke. He loves my art and photography. And found out I can sing and I'm learning the guitar. I also know he sings as well, has an rnb group and he's a very dedicated person. He loves his family, hard worker. We both want to be teachers as well. We love music, but our music tastes are different, because...well I'm "a rocker" (i listen to industrial, metal, melodic death metal, hardcore, rock.roll, funk rock etc) according to him and he's the "ghetto kid" (rnb, rap and "everything"". But we share our music and he likes some bands I like and know as well =]] We can both drive, but we have no car. But the BIG question is, how long should I wait until our first date? Who is supposed to ask who out on a date (cuz he is kinda shy, but so am I >.<). I've never had a boyfriend, never dated...so I'm kind of new to all this guy stuff. And he's the first guy I never knew who I got to know. Sometimes I think I'm doing things wrong, maybe I should try to text him more often? or I don't know. Sometimes he acts so normal. Is the fact that we still aren't making body contact ok?(e.g. hugging or kiss on the cheek). And remember, it's only been a week and a half we've been talking. Resolved Question: Activities in the Folsom CA area for age 16?

I'm a girl, almost 16 years old looking for something to do in the Folsom CA area. I have tons of things I would like to do. I would love to volunteer somewhere were there's animals, mostly dogs and cats. Animals somehow cheer people up! I don't need pay, I just want to be around animals, I've had three dogs, 1 cat, and fish, and a lizard. So I'm generally good with animals I guess. I would also like to find a beginning photography class that's not too expensive, any type of photography landscapes, portraits, I'll do anything! And last, a group or meeting that would allow my age to attend for meditation, yoga, or a group for Buddhism. Different religions and cultures intrigue me and I would like to experience them as much as I possibly can. I'm obviously open minded and I'm also very respectful. I love learning and there are not any classes at my school that teaches the things that I would like to learn specifically. (Photography class was full this year, crossing my fingers for next year!) School hours are 8-3:05 monday, tuesday, thursday, and friday and 8-1:30 on wednesdays. Please help me! more

Okay there's this girl in my church small group who is...well i have many ways to describe her: -she claims to be christian and yet wears low cut v-necks to show off her C-cups in church -she preaches the gospel and yet does stuff with olders guys all the time(and even better: she b*tched me out for saying no(for personal reasons) to a guy who asked me out) -she's so fake....i've never had a genuine conversation with her ever. -when i talk to her she hugs me and is like "hey girly" and then she talks sh*t about me to others -all she cares about is her clothes, her hair, and her make up -she constantly tries to make me look like i'm not important( like when i told her a guy broke up with me all she said was "haha i win! you lose" because she had an older bf) for example: I started getting into photography last summer and i even saved up my own money to buy a nice nikon camera for myself. when she finds out all this, she all the sudden starts doing photography too. she bragged about it all the time(and still does). I got played by this girl that showed every sign of liking me 12months ago, went out on many dates, she kept chasing/calling/texting me, constant flirting with me etc To cut a long story short she didnt like me (only as a friend). As you do i got over this n went forward with how i was. Im the kinda guy thats always up for a laugh, im the funny, confident and sit quite highly in my group of friends, i organise all the parties and what were doing each week (i go to a small school n theres about 30 of us n were all really close :D). I saw this movie late on tv a few years back and I cant remember what it was called. Sorry if this is a bit long but there is a lot that I remember from the movie Characters- 1. A teenager guy who loves photography 2. His little sister who is probably 10-12 3. The teenagers guy friend who is also a teenager but not into photography 4. The photographers dad who might have been played by Jurt Russell 5. The photographers step mom who might be played by Bonnie hunt or an older actress like susan sarandon. she was very petit Movie Plot- - The teenager knows about this abandoned town that isn't really a ghost town but it's deserted and its kinda one of those old fashioned towns and there is a diner close to the town - When the five people go to see this town they stop at the diner and when the people in the diner find out where these people are going they look linda worried but don't say anything - The family gets back on the road to go to this town only for a few hours so the teen can get some good pictures - They go into this building with a bunch of shelves and I think they were stocked with canned food and stuff - The sister finds this video camera and she watches the video and sees this other group of college kids who went to the town, she also sees most of them get attacked by these creatures you never see in the movie - She shows it to her family and they realize that these people had the same car trouble as them - The five people try to push the car out of the town but it doesn't move at all - Later on in the movie the stepmom goes to find a bathroom and she is walking on these old wood planks that are in front of a store and she falls and they crack under her and she gets up and she is on this really small chunk of rock underground and all around her except a rock wall is just a hole in the earth and if she makes any sudden moves she might fall into god knows what - The photographer teen who came with her lowers himself with a rope and gets her but when they are climbing back up to the surface they hear a heavy breathing under them that is climbing really fast and the son takes out a gun and shoots at the creature that you still never see - The family goes back to the diner and when the sister is getting her food she recognizes the waitress as the girl who survived in the video camera she found and the girl gives the sister this really strange look - They try to get out of the town and sleep in a nearby motel but the dad wakes up and thinks there is a creature outside the window - They leave in the middle of the night and when they are driving away you see the creatures point of view coming toward the car and then the car gets hit really bad and they realize they will never be able to leave - The movie finishes off when you see the sister playing basketball and the dad and stepmom now work in the diner and these people come to the diner and say they are going to the town and the people who work there just look at them the same way and don't say anything to the people. more

Resolved Question: Single, but wondering why I am...? ideas?

I feel that I am pretty confident girl. I have traveled by myself, have worked abroad in another country, have my University degree (Sociology), make my own money, drive, volunteered for a bunch of community projects (especially dealing with human rights issues). I take good care of my health (eat well, exercise regularly). I am outgoing person that can carry on a conversation on a lot topics with various age groups, races, nationalities. I have a lot of opinions but do not push them on to other people. I am not especially loud, but am talkative and enjoy talking about a lot of different topics. I have been told I am pretty strong-willed, unusual, tenacious, with a silly unique sense of humor. I have a variety of activities I like to pursue from photography to traveling to cooking. I have always been a fairly independent person with a close group of friends. I think I am pretty good looking as well...I would describe my body shape like Alicia Keys (slighty slimmer), same sort of skin tone, shoulder length dark hair (totally natural, never dyed it). I would describe my style as casual (skinny jeans, funky tops to shorts with plain or funky tees). When I dress up I prefer wearing classy dresses in neutral colors (i.e. black, grey, white) while mixing it up with funky accessories and heals. OK, well, my sister has a boyfriend. He practically lives at my house. He comes over, monday to friday, after they get out of class, for like, 4-5 hours. He sleeps over every saturday night, and goes home at 8:30 every night (except of course, saturday). He's been over everyday except for one since the 13th. I am only 13. My parents won't ban him from the house, 'coz he's done nothing wrong. He's a nice kid, but he's ALWAYS here. My sister also treats my parents and I like c*ap and like servants when he is here, and when she is on the phone to him, or on msn to him and her other cool mates. The only thing I'm jealous of (JUST slightly), is that he spends 10 times more time with her, and she wont give me the time of day. I have to try 10 times more than he does. I also try being very nice to her, but it's not working. This has been going on for weeks. The lot of it. I'm slowly going insane, please help me, I'm desperate. I have no friends. Two, but one lives an hour away and one lives 40 minutes away. Its too far on public transport, and we don't have a car. My music lesson is private, but where I take them, they are all like that. No chance of making friends. I am becoming a prisoner in my own room! I have no where else to go, except for half an hour every friday, before they get in from school-a music lesson. I am home-schooled, and there are zero clubs, groups, other classes etc. to join around here. I might be able to go some places but why should i feel like a stranger in my own home and my own room? Other than that, there's no where else. The bus fares are gonna add up, and music lessons are pricey. If any one has any other ideas, I could really use them. I could really use some different ideas to get this kid to not hang around so much, to get my sister off of the phone OR msn. The library, photography, and swimming can only last so long. I am majorly desperate. At most there are these places I can go sometimes: 3 different pools 3 different libraries 3 different shopping centres 3 places for local photography. These things are going to run out of steam-fast. Especially since I have to be with an adult (mum or dad) to go anywhere. If someone can help me, I'm getting really sick of her games, and his face. So his way last year: -We were at Disneyland for a youth group trip and he got a piece of paper and wrote "PROM?" on it and when we were on space mountain he held up the paper for the picture. Now my plan: - We're both super into photography and making movies so my plan is to go downtown and have my buddy film me asking a bunch of couples why she should go to prom with me. Then I'll edit it and make it all nice looking and at the end I'll have my grandparents (Who she loves and who have been married for 57 years!) say something cute at the end like... First, how do i pose for a picture like what are different poses and also different ways for me to take pictures. I'm familiar with the mirror picture but what else. Photo manipulation is not Photography. We live in a new era of photography today where photography is no longer as respected in its competitive form, today anyone can pick up a DSLR and make photographs supposedly good. Photoshop to reduce overblown highlights, and increase contrast is acceptable in still keeping the photograph pure. But people are using Photoshop to literally destroy the beauty of the eye that generates art so pure and so real. People are manipulating pixels by removing and adding elements into their photos that would not have been there or would have been there. Today the eye of photographer is no longer as valuable as it would have been, and what it should have been. People are less dedicated to the true form of photography where composition and lighting is always practiced and perfected. People are now appreciating photo manipulation over photography because it supposedly requires significantly less amount of composition and lighting practice, as if there are none at all. Photography is not as difficult as it used to be, the good eye needed to practice good composition is slowly being degraded to no longer being needed. Practice of good lighting is no longer needed, people just need to severely overexpose and underexpose a shot combined to create HDR or high dynamic range. HDR is being abused and photography no longer pleasing to look at, HDR when done properly is acceptable but people are removing key elements of a realistic photographic photo by adding elements from the outside that resembles something else such as painting. This group is for those who agree. P.S. DSLR’s are for photographs, not videos.Please join if you agree! Voting Question: How can I cut down on my need to edit my digital photos?

I have a great eye for shots and am very good at getting the perfect angle. However, in my time involved in photography, I have a few issues that I really need some advice about. 1. I tend to have more noise than is acceptable in my shots. And, although it tends to be fixable in editing, I'd rather avoid having to edit this if I can handle getting it done in the original picture. I try to avoid using my flash based on what I've written in #2. 2. I have a major problem with shadows. When I use the flash, even with a diffuser, it often produces unflattering shadows in the background and possibly other places. The lighting arrangement doesn't seem to matter. 3. I work with a group of people who shoot together and they often like to use strobes. I myself own continuous (floods) lights. And, when we use strobes, I have no idea of what to do because they seem to function different with every make and model of camera. And, my camera is not a DSLR but a bridge camera with onboard flash. So, I tend to shoot without the flash. Any pointers you could give me would be great. The less technical mumbo jumbo and more plain English explaination will get the best answer.I shoot with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50. I own an eternal flash but for some reason it doesn't fit on my hotshoe. more

I'm 13 and I think I might have severe SAD or just a simple growing up thing. I've taken an online test and read over a few symptoms, and got SAD as a result. I usually feel: - Extremely nervous in crowds. - I hate being the center of attention. - I look down at the ground most of the time. - My face turns red and my breathing becomes uneven or fast. - My hands are always fidgeting. - I stutter during presentations/while I'm speaking to anybody. - During conversations I can only think of "Hi" or just nodding along. - I stay home most of the time, but I don't really have any problems going out with my family. - I get extremely nervous just heading over to the cashier/asking questions from new people. - Most of the time I feel depressed at school, but my emotions change throughout the day. - I find it hard to smile. Also, people see me as a serious/sad person, but I'm not exactly trying to make a certain expression. Is it possible people can just look that way? If this is the case, I just want to talk to my mom about it. I'm not interested in any sort of medication, but maybe she can help me to join some sort of activity or after school groups, like photography or art. I just want to able to speak to my friends, and I think my family doesn't communicate as much as a result of this. Thanks. more

A Rewarding Experience Community service has created many distinct memories in my life, but my time teaching in an immigrant community called “The Canal”, has given me new skills through teaching and a stronger passion for photography. Teaching photography was a rewarding experience I knew little about, but was ultimately a service that truly impacted my life. Volunteers are frequently needed to help out in low-income areas in my county and they informed my school they needed a student that could assist an after school program. I was asked to teach middle school students for two hours each Friday, and decided I wanted to be a beacon of light to these children’s lives. This was an opportunity that could reinforce my basic knowledge of photography and fulfill my community service hours, but it turned out being much more. Walking into the classroom to teach was completely indifferent to me. I was welcomed into the building and was taken to a quiet desolate room. I then started prepping immediately with the other photography teacher for what was to come. As the kids piled in, they were loud and made it clear they did not want to be there. I took a deep breath and informed them of what was expected throughout this course. The weeks soon turned into something more memorable than just learning photography. I figured out week after week how much I was impacting each young life. Each week we set out into small groups to take photos in an area they were familiar with. They took this more serious every time this was asked. Their effort showed every week and they were creating different subject matters compositionally that I was impressed with. I lectured about basic fundamentals at the start of class, and they took what I said into action. They saw a different side to photography while shooting. Their knowledge was expanded, and they knew taking photos was not just simply pointing the lens and shooting a subject. These kids learned the basic functions of film and digital cameras, shot well thought out photos, and developed editing skills that furthered their understanding after shooting. I was impressed when I viewed each portfolio that each child had created when the course was finished because they all started with little experience, and created something special for themselves, parents, and peers. Standing in front of prospective photography students was a reward in itself. I was expecting to have rowdy uninterested students sitting in a classroom caring nothing about the art of photography. This was a surprise, and then experience was a reward in itself because I could give back to my own community and I possessed the traits of being supportive, patient, and helpful to their specific needs. I grew as a photographer, students, and a person through this experience.Please correct grammar errors. more
