Open Question: Is this a good way to set up my own photography business realistically?

Right well here is my situation.. I'm 17, in my first year of sixth form studying English Language, Sociology and Fine Art. I'm expected to get B's at the end of the year. As much as i like school and the subjects i do, there isn't anything i want to do at University. My hobby is photography, i just have a normal digital camera. No knowledge of light, lenses, composition or anything like that. But i still want to be a photographer, as in Weddings, family photos, model portfolios, landscapes e.t.c. I've seen photography courses at various University's, but non of them are what i want. So, here is my proposal, and i want you guys to tell me if its realistic. 1.For my 18th Birthday (in September) my parents are willing to buy me a professional camera, then get some practise with that. 2. Finish my A Levels in July 2011, and have good grades to fall back on. 3. During that summer, get a job (as in a shop assistant or something) to get money. At the same time go to a photography course to gain knowledge and skills. 4. After the course start doing one off jobs for people (Cheap but enough to make a bit of profit), and advertise myself in shop windows/the internet/newspaper e.t.c. 5. Hopefully my business will grow and grow into something professional. Is this realistic/a good idea? I don't mind the truth :) more

Voting Question: Cheap digital camera with slow shutter speed?

I want a cheap digital camera >£200 that has an option of a shutter speed of about 5s or so. I want this so I can take high speed photos in a pitch black room using a flashtube. Any suggestions?**<£200* less thanThank you CiaoChao: The reason I want a slow shutter speed is that the shutter will not control the exposure as the room will be pitch black. Instead a trigered flashtube/strobe will fire at the exact moment for a very breif period of time exposing a very sharp image. e.g. a ballon popping or glass smashing. more

Voting Question: Formatting memory cards?

I have a panasonic lumix digital camera and I am having trouble as it will not let me see any photos that I download from my PC to my camera. Just a thought, does my memory card want formatting if so how do I go about doing it? Resolved Question: Program to view and fix photos stored on my PC.?

I had Adobe Photoshop Starter Edition 3.0 that has been on my pc for some time. It came with the digital camera that I bought a few years ago. I can upload my photos to my pc and also view them, but if I want to amend them (fix red eye) I opened up the Adobe program to fix the eyes, but am now being told that my free trial has expired and I need to register to receive an unlock code. This has all been done and I was to receive an email with my unlock code (no need to buy one) but email states this program is no longer available. Ok, So im Asking About The Flash On Cameras.. The Reason Being They Make People Look Ugly In Photos And Yes i Know Its Due To The Flash Highlighting Blemishes Etc On Your Skin Yada Yada.. hi, everyone I like in the UK and am in my second year of college, I am studying photography and am coming up to my final exam which I need to prepare for. last year I did quite well, I got an A, and this year I'd really like to experiment with my images as much as I can. I've used techniques like digital negatives, cyanotype, dodge and burn, paint on develop, and toning, but our resources at college are limited and I don't have a lot of time to search for other ways to work with my images. I also work in digital and paint on top of the images and use photo shop, I am just wondering does anyone have any more ideas how I can experiment either in digital or with negatives Thank you so much in advance, any help would be great! :) more

I've had a casio exilim for about 4 years which used to take really good quality photos but recently the picture quality has fallen. Is this normal wear and tear for a point and shoot camera? I've been looking for a new camera on Amazon but every one I look at has negative reviews.Hey thanks for the responses guys! I've checked all of the settings and they all seem ok. It has taken a bit of a bashing over the years, so it makes sense that it'll have dust and stuff in, and that the lens is probably a bit worn. I think I'll just buy the newer model of the one I've got. more

i've been taking photos with my samsung P800 for about a year and a half now, but about 2 weeks ago, something strange happened to my camera and now the exposure's gone crazy. this sounds stupid, but i was taking pictures at my friend's house and it was really sunny and when i took a picture of the sky, the digital camera screen went stripy (its the only was i can describe it) then i immediately moved the camera away, but ever since then, the pictures come out horrible. i really really hope i havnt ruined the lens because of that picture i took...this is the only camera i have and i cant afford another one :'( please please please, is there anyone out there who can help me solve this problem? oh and i tried resetting it, but that didn't work. *cries* more

Resolved Question: Why can't I use the full capacity? (500Gb WD External Hard Drive)?

Hello... I've got a 500gb Western Digital External Hard Drive - I've had it for some time now, using it to back up work and personal stuff (photo's, music etc.) and it is now saying "disk is full". It only has 300Gb of data on it and the properties window is saying the actual capacity is 465Gb. Anybody know why this is? (I understand why the capacity is lower than 500Gb, but why can’t I use the full 465Gb?) I suspect it's something to do with needing to partition part of it off - if this is the case, can I make a new partition without losing the data already on the drive? Thank you. more

Resolved Question: How do I pay tax for services I sell on different websites if I'm based in the U.K?

Hello, I came up with an idea to sell my services online. However, I'm not sure if I need to register my business and pay tax as I would maximum get £200-£300 a month if its successful. Basically the idea is that for a particular charge I would retouch digital photos for people and it would include drawing with special software (so you can call it art as well). I would certainly have some expenses as well like laptop and tablet depreciation, paypal fee for each transaction, website hosting monthly fee and maybe some other expenses like advertising. I would also be willing to reinvest money I get from this hobby/service into new equipment and software. So my question is how do I register this legally as i wouldn't say its a serious business (i wouldn't be making much profit of it, sometimes when i lack ideas, i might not sell anything at all) Second question is, Would the situation change if I sold the same service on ebay on my personal acc as i would automatically be paying ebay 15% tax which goes to Luxembourg and fee for each paypal transaction as well. And last question, if I sell my digital photo work on a lot of different websites like ebay, shutterstock.co.uk and my personal website how do I register it then.Now it is not my only income, its just a hobby and the money I would get I would use for purchasing more equipment for the same activity (cameras, lenses, software and etc) more

OK, this is a theoretical question, simply for legal students and computer students. Here in the United Kingdom, we have the Protection of Children Act 1978 law (later amended in 2003), which has since been updated. Say "Joe Bloggs", a 28-year-old man has been looking at pictures of celebrities on MySpace, but then ends up coming across a photo of a 16-year-old girl (not an obscene photo, not nude, not pornographic, just a normal, digital photo) would he have been in contravention of that act, or is he within the law? It's not like he was actively seeking out the material anyway. What's the law regarding this? - especially as this is underdiscussed on Internet safety sites.What if the picture was, say, of a 16-year-old girl in a crop top/jeans or a 16-year-old boy working out in a gym (these are theoretical examples)? I recently bought a new digital camera - the Kodak M341 (12.2MP, 3x Zoom). I would like to get the most out of it, and there's no how-to websites on the internet. I know how to use the camera, as I've had them before, but I want to ask about the more technical effects. My camera is listed as having auto-focus, with modes such as macro and infinity. I want to know how to activate these, what they are, and when I should use them. I also want to know about the shutter button. When I half click it, it says "AF" in the corner (I'm assuming this stands for auto-focus), but sometimes a green bracket comes up, highlighting an area. I'm assuming this is the area that has been focused? I want to know whether I can change the subject of the focus, or whether this is only possible on manual focus cameras. Resolved Question: What digital printing shop will print my photos from CD rather than memory card?

I am doing an art project and have research of around 1000 photos. I lent my camera from my university and have to send the camera back with no photos on it. I do not have time to take the camera or its memory card into a shop before returning the camera to uni. I can't find a shop online that will print my pictures from CD. Do any of you know of one? It has to be in the manchester area so I can travel to it. Thanks a million if you help me out!!! more

Resolved Question: How can I recover corrupted JPEG images?

Hi I had say about 180 photos on my digital camera, I took the memory card (Memory Stick PRO Duo) out of the camera and inserted it into the memory card slot of my laptop and cut and pasted the images over to my hard drive. I then realised that about 120 of these images where corrupt and would not open, I tried to Ctrl + Z to get the images back on the memory stick but still the images where corrupt. The file sizes are correct for what the images should be, I get no thumbnail and cannot open the files with any image viewer. Is there anyway to recover these images? Thank you in advance. Rob more

Is it even possible? I have a Samsung PL50, this is the first camera i've had where I can set/change the aperature on it. Could someone explain to me how to do this if it's possible.
