Open Question: Could you take a look at my project and suggest photographers/artists i could look at which are similar?
i posted some photos here http://fffdddfff.wordpress.com/
It started as a sculpture project but ive taken into photography and painting. Not really sure where to go with it for photography but some portrait-ish photographers i can look at would be kool if you know any? I'm kind of leaning towards the black and white one... but then im also tempted to collage them with old postcards n stickers n random photos n text n stuff.
oh and you will have to excuse the fact that they havnt been cropped n photoshopped or framed very well, i took hundreds of photos and towards the end i started slackin a bit, but you get the general idea, hopefully.

Hey peoples,
I'm working on a 5/4 project in a studio and basically with a black/white backdrop and lightings I have to be creative with the subject I'm photographing, so in this case I'm photographing a single orchid in a vase. I have a few ideas by using the macro and shining the light from behind the object etc ... I also sprayed the plant with water droplets but just wondered if anyone could recommend anything?
Thanks! X

moreResolved Question: What do you think? Critique?
A thick mist opens like unravelling folds in a curtain. A grey, bleak, but purposeful curtain.
A heavy curtain, festooned with showy ruffles and golden tassles.
A curtain in front of an invisible door.
All mists have purposes, you know.
A diversion is the most common. A fog on the motorway could mean that someone's opened a portal nearby, and needs the confusion to get to or fro.
But you can get the odd poisoning mist. A sleep mist. And then you get a Destroya mist, which can only be kept at bay, by another Destroya spell, or an elemental spell, however finding either of the majyk is incredibly rare.
It's an awkward procedure. The majyk involved entails a lot of intelligence and energy. Although, environmentally, it distributes a lot of oxygen nitrate- a plus indeed- of which Greenpeace thinks is down to them.
Little do they know.
The problem with mists is that it cannot increase, get smaller, change shape, or move from the floor. Gravity prevents it. Infact, it shares all other laws of science apart from the fact is it's Majyk, and when touched by it, a white poisonous tarry substance lingers.
But of course, only powerful sorcerers can create such portals and powerful sorcerers only usually tend to have bad intentions.
The mist dived down the cobbled steep steps, whipping leaves off branches into the sticky white tar that was the mist.
An orchestra of snapping tree bodies provided warning to the woodland creatures and people in the forest.
All but one.
Yawning, Cassopeia stretched on the thick tree branch, towering over Matlock and the famed long winding pathway that lead up to the top of the hillish forest.
GREAT, she muttered. PINS AND NEEDLES.
Groaning, when her cardigan snatched on some loose bark, she gathered her bearings and balanced herself, taking care not to put too much weight on her pin and needled legs.
"Ahh!" she gasped. Casi had been scouring the view from Top Tree for a good half hour, and had completely forgotten about what she had been here for.
But she forgave herself. She knew what it was like to capture the moment, and then be captured in the moment. It was why she loved taking photography. Although she could never bring herself to call herself photographer. For now, it was a pursuit, even though she had had a couple of nature shots and bustling tourists in Matlock published in some prestigious leaflets and marketing campaignes. Looking at Matlock streetway, she grinned at the sight of bikers, hundreds of them, some couples sharing the same biking leather, holding hands. She caught herself before she looked for matching blue and black motorbiking outfits, two people the practically the same height, same messy, unkempt hair, same worn smile; but not because Mum and Dad were tired, just because they used it so much.
Mum always said laughter lines were her favourite wrinkles, because they told everybody she was happy with her life, and not worrying about the end of it.
Casi held the tree for support, breathing heavilly.
It's been too long, Casi mumbled, amazed. But it feels like it happened last week or something.
It was unusual for Casi to dwell on such sadness, but maybe the peace and quiet had dredged up a few unwanted memories.
And then Casi noticed the silence was more like an absence of noise. She coughed happily.
Grappling onto a higher branch, her Canon HD camera swinging on her wrist, almost banging the tree, she lifted herself higher, trying to get part of some interesting brickwork into her next picture.
Click.
The mist slammed into Top Tree, shaking Casi like a weedy skyscraper caught in an earthquake. Her hold on the tree was stong enough to withstand it, but her pins and needles hadn't worn off. She lost her footing and tried frantically to grab onto something less flimsy than the branch above her. The shaking stopped, catching her off guard more than the beginning of it. Some intermediate training had warned her to be on guard, ready for anything. Her sweating fingers tried to keep hold of the camera strap, but her hands were contorted and it slipped off. Yelling loudly inbetween curses, she tried to catch it with her knees, but it fell right through. Hitting her head on the flimsy branch, and taking a good metre off with her, she fell through the foliage of the sixty foot tree, sharp spindly branches following her, speeding her fall further.
With her coffee coloured cardigan in tatters, matching her skin on her back, arms and bare legs, she slooped up, and lumbered around the debris of the suddenly icy white tree for her camera. Minutes of insufferable searching later, and she had reluctantly given up.
"I'll close my eyes, and when i open them, im going to see my beautiful camera, glimmering maybe a little, swinging off my wrist."
she opened one green eye, then the other.
"Bugger. What's the point of having majyk when you can't do anything?"
She slumped against the destroyed tree. She made a mental note to go thei have had it on here before, but the question was removed :| so dont think that im just asking for compliments.
thanks, everyone.

First of all thank you for viewing my query.

I am using a KM pentax asahi camera so its a black and white camera and i really want to graab! the urban decay
Definition of urban decay [ to help get some inspiration/ thoughts of london]
'' Urban decay is the sociological process whereby a city, or part of a city, falls into disrepair and decrepitude, with depopulation or changing population, economic restructuring, abandoned buildings, high local unemployment, fragmented families, political disenfranchisement, crime, and a desolate, inhospitable city landscape. Urban decay and gentrification are opposite processes, mirror images of each other. ''
where can i go and capture that ^
any ideas and suggestion would be very helpful!

moreResolved Question: Needs help with names?
I'm writing a story set in the fictional New Jersey town of Blaire in the county of Monmouth, it is a small waterfront town which deals mainly in summertime tourism and fishing. It is considered a small town yet has an Elementary, Middle and High School, Hospital and it's own permanent fairground. There is a waterfront promenade with cafe's, stores and hotels where most of the younger people in town get their jobs. Behind that is a small shopping district and a large suburban area, the story is set in 1970 and I need names for the various places.
1. A Crab Restaurant, family oriented place with a big plastic crab on the face of the building.
2. A cheap gas station with a 50's style diner inside one of those metallic buildings with the booths and the bar.
3. A pleasant looking waterfront hotel with shuttered windows and potted plants, all the rooms have peppermints on the pillows of the beds.
4. A rather greasy spoon fast food restaurant with a clown as it's mascot, has a drive through and sells hamburgers, onion rings etc, menu very similar to Dairy Queen.
5. A sprawling country club with a spa, golf course, tennis courts and swimming pool.
6. A small funfair amongst the rocks besides the beach, away from the water. There is a small wooden roller coaster, ferris wheel, a tunnel of love, food and game stalls, a carousel, a crooked house, ghost train and a zipper ride.
7. A family owned pharmacy/drug store.
8. A seedy looking Pawn Shop.
9. A classy looking Coffee Shop with dark leather seats and black and white photography on the walls.
10. A tavern with an inn above, pool tables and a juke box, is known for attracting bikers.
11. The town hall where they hold meetings, have theatre plays and host talent shows and the local beauty pageant "Blaire Teen Princess".
12. A rather pleasant looking, but slightly run down cinema with 3 screen rooms and a big awning with the magnetic letters on a white board, usually shows matinee.
13. A big drive in cinema on the edge of town which shows horror and sci fi flicks, a popular haunt for teens.
14. A pizzaria with white, green and red tiled walls and a pinball machine up front, the owner is a friendly yet slightly unkempt Italian.
15. A little club with a open mic stage for karaoke, poetry and stand up comedy. Sells hard liqour and the menu mainly consists of seafood.
16. A hardware store, slightly big and has a large parking lot. The owner has a shotgun in his office and has a penchant for making sure teenagers stay out of trouble.
17. A small nightclub on the water front with a bright and zany interior and a dance floor, a mirror ball and a stage for up and coming bands. Owned by a woman called Pinky with pink hair.
Thanks so much for helping me out guys!the place where they hold Town Hall meetings isn't the town hall, if it was that I wouldn't of bothered to list it. Something like the Howard Building or Thymes TheatreNo. 17 is 'The Flamingo'
No. 16 is 'Jack's Home Saloon'
No. 12 is 'Mainstreet Matinee'
No. 4 is 'Pledger's'
No.2 is 'Cooper's Gas' and the diner is called 'Audra's'
No. 12 is 'The Blue Moon Drive-In Cinema'

moreVoting Question: I'm really interested in buying a film camera (possibly Nikon or Olympus) can anyone give me any suggestions?
I'm currently studying photography at A level, and carrying it on to university. Over the past year i have taken great interest in Traditional dark room photography, however don't know what camera would be best. I would ideally like something for shooting portraits (since this is my focus area) I'd like to be able to shoot in both black & white and colour (which depends on the film i suppose?)
I've been looking into some possible options to get quite a retro style feel however i want the photos to be good quality, so with a good focus. A possible option so far it the Olympus Trip 35?
I want to make sure i get the best camera, but don't really know where to start! Tips and advice would be really useful.
Also, could anyone suggest a good filter suitable for Nikon D60 which would make my portrait pictures look softer? And less harsh.
Thanks.

"Every hot girl who can aim a camera thinks she's a photographer. Oooooooh, you took a black-and-white picture of a lawn chair and its shadow and developed it at Save-On. You must be so brooding and deep."
LOL

moreResolved Question: Does anybody make their own card photo mounts and if so any tips : cutting, sizing etc?
I like to use simple black card mounts with the inner rectangle cut at a 45 degree angle to give a nice white inner border.
Most of my shots are 10 x 8 so it is easy to find mounts on ebay and in photography shops etc.
However I have several custom sized shots that would require tailor made mounts. I would like to be able to make them myself.
What tools are required for example to cut at a 45 degree angle. What do you use to get accurate measurements ?
Are there any good tutorials out there ? So far my searches have turned up little of any use.
Cheers.
moreResolved Question: What's the SIMPLEST free photo editing software?
My father (65) has recently got into digital photography, and would like to edit some of his photos on his computer.
He doesn't want to pay for photo editing software, and he'd be scared by anything complicated. If it can crop and fix red-eye, that would be great. If it lets him fiddle with brightness/contrast in quite a basic way, or make his photos black and white, that would be even better, but that's as far as he'll go.
If it has massive menus with bewildering options, he just won't use it. He doesn't want to work with layers, or apply complex filters, or convert from RAW (his point-n-shoot just takes jpegs), or any of that. Just make his snapshots look a bit better, not create works of art.
What do you recommend?
moreResolved Question: Can anybody help with ideas for my art project?
Hey, I am stuck for what to do for my art project which I have to have it ready for school in 3 weeks!! I have ideas but I don't know how they would work. Here they are anyway:
Initially, my idea was to do a sunset sky in the background with silhouettes of dogs or any animal in front and maybe some trees/grass etc but that's when I thought it would be too simple! I want to use lots of different medium like photography, charcoal, pencil, text, newspaper and doing that would just be paint for the sunset and black paper for silhouettes which I thought was too boring.
So then I had the idea to do an 'old' theme with off-white newspaper as the background and make my photographs look old with photoshop...have some kind of text and sequins..and just generally include lots..maybe even patterns with charcoal. I don't know how all this would come together though and I did really poorly with my last art project so want to do something different this year. Does anyone have any ideas? :( It's for GCSE art.
