Open Question: Is this a good way to set up my own photography business realistically?
Right well here is my situation.. I'm 17, in my first year of sixth form studying English Language, Sociology and Fine Art. I'm expected to get B's at the end of the year. As much as i like school and the subjects i do, there isn't anything i want to do at University. My hobby is photography, i just have a normal digital camera. No knowledge of light, lenses, composition or anything like that. But i still want to be a photographer, as in Weddings, family photos, model portfolios, landscapes e.t.c. I've seen photography courses at various University's, but non of them are what i want. So, here is my proposal, and i want you guys to tell me if its realistic. 1.For my 18th Birthday (in September) my parents are willing to buy me a professional camera, then get some practise with that. 2. Finish my A Levels in July 2011, and have good grades to fall back on. 3. During that summer, get a job (as in a shop assistant or something) to get money. At the same time go to a photography course to gain knowledge and skills. 4. After the course start doing one off jobs for people (Cheap but enough to make a bit of profit), and advertise myself in shop windows/the internet/newspaper e.t.c. 5. Hopefully my business will grow and grow into something professional. Is this realistic/a good idea? I don't mind the truth :) moreOpen Question: Best photographer website templates that protects your pictures from being stolen and you can...?

Any suggestions?
I'm a photographer and am looking for a free blog that I can embed into my website for clients and potential clients to have access to for viewing and blogging. Looking for one that is easy to use and has all the features a good blog should have (preferably with not much advertising...) Thanks guys and gals, I look forward to seeing what you have to say! moreResolved Question: How do I start a calendar fundraiser for a non-profit organization?
I am a graphic artist | photographer and I have this idea of creating a calendar fundraiser. The calendar would feature the work of local models, hair stylists, makeup artists, clothing designers and jewelry designers collectively in the photographs. The overhead from the calendars would go to charity. I have not decided as to what charity the money would go to yet. I was going to put it to a vote at a later date. Would I have to contact the charity and let them know of my plan, so I can get permission to use their name, logo and charity number? If I just advertise that the money would go to charity, put it to a vote later and just donate to the charity with the highest vote at the end of voting...would that be all right? After the fundraiser is over I would post the calendar sales and donation receipt online as proof on my website. If anyone has any experience with fundraising, I sure would appreciate your input. Thank you. moreResolved Question: Photography and schooling, want professional photographers opinions.?
I have been doing lots of photography work for about 3 years now. Just now have I taken it to a professional level and started doing portrait photography for families, children, couples and more. Although I like to do nature photography, I feel like I specialize more in portrait photography. To me, I am rather good with what I do with what little schooling I have had with photography. College is not an option right now, and most likely won't be for a few years due to lack of money. I do, however, take a lot of free online 'classes' and read alot about it. I don't take the classes to learn how to take pictures, I can do that wonderfully with just my talent, I like to learn more about exposure, camera settings, lighting, and other tips and suggestions. My problem is that a lot of people think to be a photographer you have to have schooling and lots of it. I am also fairly young, almost 19. I have the professional equipment that my husband and I bought prior to advertising my work, and I have a lot of experience. I think the pictures and your professionalism should prove it self when I do a person or families shots, but the thing is, I get a lot of people who look past me because of my lack of schooling and age. My prices are extremely cheap, below $100, mostly below $75, and I am confident in my work. What tips would you give me to bring in more customers? I am in the process of learning GIMP and continue reading all about new things with photography. Is there any PROFESSIONAL photographers on here that have made it where they want with out schooling? I am not going to post any of my work, because I believe every one will have their own opinions and I am already confident with what I do. Thanks so much to you all!Alright, I will post some of my work if it is that important. I charge so cheap because I feel like with my age and lack of schooling I probably can not get what I think my work is worth quite yet. Here is a post to my blog with most of my work. http://shoryphotography.blogspot.com/By the way, what is this "it" you speak of that I am so full of?http://s802.photobucket.com/albums/yy305/shorylovephotography/ So you can enlarge the pictures. i worked for a local photographer over the last 3 years. he is now retired and i am working on starting my own photography business. is it legal for me to publish photos on my website that i took during that time if the client signed a contract for him, allowing him to use the photos for advertising purposes and such? i was given a verbal okay to use any photos that i took from my previous employer after he retired.. however, im wondering if its legal becase i had a complaint. i explained to her the situation and told her i would gladly remove the images however she has not responded and its making me nervous..thank you so much for your help! i will contact my former empolyer and see if he can get me something in writting. that shouldnt be too difficult since he already verbally okayed it. i think that the womans initial concern was that she didnt recognize my name (it has changed due to marriage) but i explained everything and she has been silent for a week now.. i told her i would take them down and was very polite. i have no intentions of upsetting anyone! anyway, right now my work can be seen on facebook. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lewistown-PA/Arle-Jimenez-Photography/296617733052#!/pages/Lewistown-PA/Arle-Jimenez-Photography/296617733052 should take you there. my official website should be ready to launch later this week! www.arlejimenezphotography.com thanks again! moreResolved Question: How do i advertise my photography business?

My husbands boss is wanting to help me out on the business end of my photography, and manage me kind of. I guess it might be a sort of partnership? I really suck at business, and my only advertising for my photography "business" has consisted of me putting ads on craigslist. He just mentioned it today. He has a lawyer that is going to sit down and draft up a deal. From what I gather, he plans on supplying the contacts, helping to procure customers and helping invest capital so that I can use better photography equipment... New camera, more strobes and such. All I do is shoot... Which sounds like a dream come true for me. Is it reasonable to sign a forever non-compete saying that as long as I'm in the area, I work for him and the business that he invests in and give him a certain position unless he releases me? Can you give yourself an out in those circumstances? Should the non-compete be for a set amount of years instead of indefinitely? I'm kind of confused on what I should ask for or look for, and I don't want to sign something I will wish I didn't in the future. Thanks for any help! moreResolved Question: Im doing a photography project, can you help please?

Were you forced to take photography courses that were completely irrelevant to the kind of photography you wanted to do? For example, I want to do consumer portraiture when I'm done with school, but I'm being forced to take multiple advertising photography classes which I really have no interest in.Plus I had to take multiple website design classes, and I have no interest in building my own website or doing any kind of website design when I'm done. I would much rather take that tuition money and pay someone else to build my website, like LiveBooks.Or architecture photography classes... I have no interest in architecture. moreResolved Question: Wedding Photography...Less is more? Or do you want more?
We just started our Photography business in 2009, and are sort of re-vamping for 2010. We don't have a studio and usually meet clients where its convenient (house, coffee shop). Currently we bring 2 sample albums (exact replica of what the clients got), and 2 scrapbook albums with prints, and our laptop, which people can see full weddings if they really want too. We're in a the low bracket for weddings, so I think bringing all of this is sort of our way of proving our quality, since our main way of advertising is craigslist, and most people we meet are scared that we're scammers. But now that we have about 20 weddings under our belt, and most of them have left us reviews on weddingwire, onewed. We were thinking of cutting down. Would you want to see that much if you were meeting a photographer? Or would maybe one sample album and the laptop (which has multiple weddings) be enough? Not to mention most people have seen our work already via our website. Thanks for your input. :DThanks for the tip, but I'm asking more about what to bring to the first meeting. :) moreResolved Question: What is a clever way of getting more people to "Become a fan" on Facebook?

My goal for my birthday was to have 500 fans but right now I'm stuck at 407. I hate spamming links to my site on other become a fan pages so I won't do that, that's impolite and could get my account locked. What are some other clever ways I can get my page out there?yahoo answers is really sensitive about links on here with this 999 error bulls----. So, if you want to see my become a fan page just search "White Creek Photography" in the facebook bar up top. moreResolved Question: What does this dream mean? Christians please answer.?
One point to mention is this: I had concluded that on May 7th which is the 127th day in the Julian Calender, I would see him again... at an undisclosed and unknown location... so Julian could symbolize the Julian calender. So this is my dream: I dreamt that I was a photographer trying to cpature beautiful arrangements of color for my company and there were two girls that I was talking to. They were very beautiful and good to each other but when I talked to them they were rude and nasty to me and for the most part just ignored me and I wandered what's the point of being so beautiful when you have such a nasty personality? Why would anyone care how beautiful you are? But everyone cared greatly how beautiful they were, except me who couldn't figure it out. Then I dreamt that we were trying to advertise ourselves to outsiders. All the indians which I believe symbolize toughness, and perseverence that I went to highschool with had become royalty and most of them were kings. An avereage looking guy with an overly friendly face that all the girls liked had become king. His name was julian. To get attention and promote our group he gets all of his servants to lock him in a coffin and place him along a moving pipeline at the bottom of a man-made structure shaped loosely like a pyramid and as he does this, the contraption takes him along a path sometimes going right a little bit and sometimes going left a little bit until it reaches the top of the pyramid through the wheels that are pushing him under the man-made tunnel. ONce he reaches the top, the contraption lock becomes deactivated and he comes out of his coffin at the top of the moutain for all to see his brilliance and the greatness of his kingdom. But no matter how many times he does this, he cannot produce a miracle or testify that the contraption is not man made which is what will win over the people outside. Karen a really ugly girl that a virtuous man loved in university because of her intelligence and purity had also become powerful because she was the ex-girlfriend of the king. She accused the king of doing this show which he did 2.5 times to get her back and told all of his friends that this was why he was doing the show and was just making all kinds of false slanderous accusations against him. ON th last show before Karen appears in the picture an unknown king tries to the slow the process by blocking the coffin at points in the moving assembly where it is risky because the king needs to breathe after a certain amount of time in the pipelin and there are big expanses of empty space in the pipeline every few minutes or so that he can get a whift of fresh but Julian comes out safe and suffers no harm. During this time as Julian was doing all these miracles with the contraption, I was trying to figure out if God would not let me marry this man after I had gone 6 years without seeking His face, though I had been praying every day during this period of time and I concluded that this dream could not answer my question. I believe the whift of fresh air... that the king needs, means that the king's heart's heart is restless, not satisifed with the people he has chosen to associate, and that he cannot be tied down in a relationship that he not 100% satisifed with, because the restless spirit inside him will cause him to wander and stray away from the contriction in search of a new and better relationship... And that even though an unknown king had tried to slow the process, the unknown king allowed it to happen. Background information: There was a really religious guy that I used to love so deeply with a spiritual love, but some negative interferences that I allowed to happen destroyed my reputation and he was unwilling to risk being the only one to associate with me when all of his friends hated me. We used to kiss and make out... never went further than that but it was because he wanted affection and was suicidal and depressed, he never saw me or loved me like a girlfriend, he just wanted someone to sooth his negative feelings... and I didn't enjoy it at all because I knew he did not love me, and the way he was treating me I did not love him. Then I went back to thinking... if we had a spiritual, chrisitan relationship where we were both seeking God, and trying hard to serve him, we could have such a beautiful life together, because in spite of his flaws I know he has a very strong, unshakable faith in God... and the only thing I like about him is his religion, not his physical or intellectual attributes, not his money. moreVoting Question: How can I promote myself as a Portrait Photographer?
I just graduated and got my degree in photography. I will eventually open a studio but for now I can only do it on the side. If you are a photographer what marketing tactics have been successful for you? If not, what means of advertising do you think you would respond to as a consumer? Other than word-of-mouth which leaves me relying on friends and family to help me out, I was thinking of having some nice postcards printed up w/ my contact info and sample photos on them. moreResolved Question: Does this sound like a reasonable model release form? should i sign?

I'll just include a few straight-forward details to aim for an exact answer. I am a photographer. I consider it a hobby, but have been hired for three weddings, four portraiture shoots, and do plenty of outdoors work. I have been re-hired to do some post wedding pictures for a family album. To cut-to-the-chase, I despise arrogance, but frankly, I'm a pretty good photographer. The one thing that I can always count on hearing is "why don't you make it a business?" I'm sixteen, and have no idea of how to run a business. Lately, though, I've been thinking a lot about selling some of my photography. Now that you know where I'm coming from, I'll ask my question. =D My name is Trent Smith. I am a photographer with out a studio and seeing as it is freezing cold outside I have been meeting some clients indoors at the Football Stadium (which we as a city have paid to be built for with taxes increases a few years ago). Well lately We have been kicked out because we are taking photos inside. We are mostly taking engagement portraits for clients who had booked us for their upcoming wedding. I have read that we are legally allowed to photograph on any public property but this one security guard keeps saying what were doing is illegal and we can't advertise our business which we aren't doing and so on... So long story short.... What are our rights and are we in the right or wrong? Any advice is appreciated!! Thanks!! moreResolved Question: Do I need to a license to be a photographer?

I'm not a professional model, but I do some modeling for a photographer in my town, but i would like to go to a modeling school. I'm only fourteen years old, I'm from a small town, and I don't have much money. Is their a website that I can advertise my photos and get some modeling work without having to be an actual professional? moreResolved Question: Best travel laptop for photographers?
Let me give you some background. I travel mostly out of a backpack. I shoot RAW and edit in Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom. I need something that is rugged, portable (under 5lbs), powerful enough to do my post processing. I know most photographers laugh at the idea of doing post processing on a travel laptop. I need to because I'm in the field for weeks at a time. I shoot for newspapers so my finished files aren't that big and I don't have to do a ton of detail work like an advertising photographer would. My first thought was to get a maxed out netbook: 1.6Ghz 3Gb ram 1024X800 and then have a desktop replacement notebook at home. But then the thought of switching to mac popped back in my head. I'm thinking about the 13 macbook pro. But I can't justify the price jump for something that is essentially a PC with a different operating system. Someone suggested a netbook running mac's OS as the best option but I thought it might be underpowered. Any thoughts for a photo editing laptop with +1.6Ghz(preferably dual core), +3gb, -5lbs, rugged(not a toughbook), and with at least a 1024X700 display? I should note that I'm running CS2 and want to upgrade. So the cost of buying CS4 is already factored into my price. I also want to stress that weight and size is very important to me because I live out of a backpack but I still want the minimum specs I listed above. Also I think 15" would be my max size. I know the bigger the better for photos but I need something small for ease of travel. moreResolved Question: I'm a traveling photojournalist who needs to know, mac or pc?

I am a professional photographer, self taught. I do weddings and some occasional portraits on the side. I do have a website and a name for my "business". Well I took a job at a portrait studio because I need money. When I was hired they knew fully that I am a photographer and I do photography on the side for money. Well when I was at work yesterday a lady had asked me if the company I work for trains me how to take pictures and I replied well I am a professional photographer for 2 years. She asked me where I had worked before here and I simply said no where I am self taught. Well the manager threw a big stink about it later that I can NOT talk about that while at work. Well I told her I didn't say I had a business and I didn't say what type of photography I had done. I was not advertising anything and the manager said well you could see in her eyes she wanted to know more and I said oh no she didn't. Besides I could be a landscape photographer and still be a professional professional. and She said well I think a professional photographer is someone who does weddings. I said any JOE off the street can take wedding pictures its just a matter of knowing what your doing and doing it good. Then a moment later I said technically your a professional photographer as well cause this is your profession and your job title is photographer. she said well I dont see my self as a professional and I was just like well technically speaking you are. Can I get in trouble for saying I am a professional photographer? What laws are on my side if any? oh by the way, the manager is a complete ditz who knows not a single thing about photography but she got the job cause she did sales. infact she is only 22 years old without any manager experience. But she has a big chip on her shoulder cause she is a "manager" who thinks she knows everything. moreResolved Question: So I'm a photographer... barely starting out. Can someone explain some things for me?
So I've been photographing for about 3 and a half years now, but I recently started actually charging people for me to do shoots with them, the first one i did, I charged $10 for 9 edited pictures(I was a noob haha, so i didn't charge much)as I'm getting more and more into photography, I'm wondering, even if somebody does pay me can i still use their pictures for things like my portfolio and for advertising for my photography? Or do I need them to sign something? Also, can I SELL prints of my photography of other people? Is that legal? moreResolved Question: Aspiring model looking for photographers?

I'm taking a computer class at school, for one of our projects we have to create a business. So I have to pick a job that I would like to start, write a report, and make up some advertising. I picked being a photographer for my project because it is something I am interested in and I figured this would be a good opportunity to learn about it. Anyways my question is: How much do photographers typically charge for weddings, birthdays, family events, portraits, and kids sports events? (things like that) How much do supplies cost (paper and ink) and How much should I buy at a time? And is their anything else I need to know about being a self - employed photographer? And this one is a bit off topic but still has to do with photography. I was asked by a teacher of mine if I could take a family portrait for them and pictures for a christmas card, she said she'd pay me and I was wondering what I should expect, and what I should do? (This is my first job) I have a Canon Rebel XS, a tripod and photoshop. The pictures will be taken out doors and the photos will be of my teacher, her husband, and their son. I am a bit nervous and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. moreVoting Question: Should I pursue photography as a career??(take a look at my book)?
I know we're in hard economical times and the arts field is extremely competitive but I really do think I have what it takes to work as a fashion photographer. or at least a portrait photographer. I'm a bit of a beginner, who just turned 17 but I'd love to do this as a profession. Its fun, I love it, and I know i won't mind going to work everyday. There's also the alternative of working in business/advertising and making photography my fall back. thing is, i dont know if i'd be just as happy. what should i do?!?!!? here's my "port" flickr com/pinktaxicab moreResolved Question: Wedding Photography -- Do I have the right to use my wedding photos in commercial ads?
My wedding photos FINALLY got back (they were 6 weeks late on top of the 4-6 weeks that he'd estimated) and, while I'm not entirely happy with them, there are a few that I really like. I really want to send some photos to the hair/makeup artist (there are some good ones of her putting makeup on me) and the florist (she's a family friend) to put on their websites. My question is, can I just do that? Our photographer gave us a big album and a CD with all our pictures on it. Do I then have the rights to do whatever I want with the photos? Or do I have to get permission from him before giving these photos to other vendors to use on their sites. I really wasn't very happy with our photographer -- some photos turned out great, but it really wasn't what he'd advertised and he was in a sulky mood all day and was kind of rude to people. I don't really want to have to talk with him anymore, but I also know that these other vendors (who were WONDERFUL to us!) would appreciate the photos for their portfolios. What should I do? Options: 1. Go ahead and email the photos to the vendors and don't worry about it. He gave us a CD of the photos after all -- we can do as we please with them. 2. Email the photos to the vendors and ask them to put (Photography by ________) somewhere on them. 3. Email the photographer and give him the numbers of the photos that I'd like to be released to be used on the other vendors' websites and ask permission. 4. Something else entirely brilliant that I haven't thought of -- but you have! Any suggestions? If someone has had experience in this area or knows the legal reasons for selecting one option over the other, I'd appreciate it. moreResolved Question: List the things i need to start up a model agency.?

I know this is a bit long.. I don't expect anyone to answer everything, but if you could answer even one or two questions for me, that'd be great! I'm a student photographer and am planning on putting together my portfolio over my xmas break and next summer! I want to work as a childrens portrait photographer both in a studio and outdoors, and I have a fair few shots already that I can use in the portfolio. Should I stick to just pics of kids in the portfolio considering this is the area I want to work in? Or should I have other pictures in it too? If I should, should i mostly have kids, and a just few other pictures, or half kids and half other stuff, etc.? I've got plenty of pictures of friends and family's kids that I have permission to use and will be doing some more shoots of the same kids over my break, but i don't want all the pictures to be of all the same kids. How could I get more parents willing to let me photograph their kids? I've asked friends and family to mention what i'm doing to people they know with children. I have also advertised online, but obviously people are a little reluctant to let strangers photograph their children. Maybe I worded the advertisment badly.. What exactly should I say? I have access to a studio, and will also be doing some outdoor shots (but the outdoor ones will mainly be during the summer, cause the weather is pretty bad this time of year where I live). Any ideas of places I could bring them for shoots? I've already taken them to places like the playground and zoo.. Also, any good ideas for studio set ups? How should it present the portfolio? Are A4 prints a good size? Would you suggest a matte or glossy finish? About how many prints should I have? I def won't have too little, but i'm a little afraid i'll over do it and have way too many pictures. What should I put them in? Is there some sort of universal holder that people use for portfolios, or do they vary? I'll obv have to do up contracts to have the parents of each child sign.. I'll be putting in it that I have permission to use the pictures in my portfolio.. Anything else I need to outline in it? Any other tips? Thank you, Aisling moreResolved Question: migrating after marriage... what are our options?
My boyfriend and I in our midtwenties and planning to marry in about 2 years time. We live in Jakarta, Indonesia. Because of the pollution here, I've been having health problems. I've lived in medium-sized major cities in the US, Australia, and Europe, and have always been a healthy girl. But since living in Jakarta I've been suffering frequent colds, perpetual headaches, and very low stamina, especially on and around my period. It may be anemia but I haven't checked because I don't really trust the doctors here. My boyfriend--a young lawyer by profession--has been a globetrotter like me, and has expressed interest in living elsewhere, although we haven't really started any serious planning. He was born in Switzerland, but as the son of an Indonesian embassy employee dual citizenship was prohibited so his ID card states Jakarta as his birthplace instead of Geneva. He graduated both his bachelors and masters in law from The Netherlands, whose laws are the basis of Indonesian law. Likewise, Dutch law is concordant with French law and the law of other countries based on Ancient Roman law. He specialises in corporate and business law, and has worked in Holland as well as Indonesia. I have a Canadian permanent residence, which my family and I have earned through legal procedures that started when I was still a minor. I have never lived there. My parents and I visited Canada in 2007 to activate the permit (I was 22), but we are required to reenter in 5 years time ie 2012 (I will be 27). In 2011 I expect to graduate with a bachelors in performing arts communication and in 2012 a masters in journalism or broadcasting. Over the past 3 years I have worked on and off as translator/interpreter, master of ceremony (hosting small concerts and seminars), and hosting a radio talk show. Recently I've decided to cross over to brand management/advertising as a copywriter, hoping that it would land me a fun but challenging job supporting quirky creative professionals like graphic designers, professional photographers, product developers, and others in charge of advertising/brand development campaigns. I plan to join campus clubs to start my portfolio and hope that it would land me with internships or projects elsewhere so I would at least have some experience by the time I migrate. In the future I'd prefer to work on a freelance basis, in case my would-be-husband might get transferred frequently, plus I would like my time to be relatively flexible so we can raise a family. OK, so in short my boyfriend has ties with Europe and I have ties with Canada. Once married, we want to migrate together somewhere (not necessarily Canada or Switzerland although those are the more obvious options for now). I do NOT prefer EU countries, although I'm not totally against it either. We need to prepare how we're going to live overseas and still be able to thrive in our professions. The way I have seen others do this is by joining a multinational company that happens to have an office in Jakarta, then climb the corporate ladder to get transferred elsewhere... how would this work out for a lawyer? (I'm more concerned about him having the fixed job, as I expect to work more as an independent professional in the future) Where can we find more information to explore our options so we can start preparing ahead of time? Companies to work for? International professional associations to join? Policies concerning spouses of Canadian permanent residents or the possibility of an adult born in Switzerland to request citizenship/permanent residency? Policies of other countries? Cities with significantly better air quality than Jakarta? Thanks :) moreResolved Question: How do I start out? I want to be a photographer, very amateur at this point.?
I recently decided I want to be a photographer, but I'm very amateur. I've never gone to any class for it, and I can't afford to go to school for it just yet. But I've met people who never attended class in their life, yet they make a killing off of their photos! I've started out by making a profile on myspace just for my photos, and I've been offering free sessions (I don't think it would be right to charge someone when I'm not sure what quality photos I'm capable of just yet). What would make you want to give an amateur a chance? What are some free ways of advertising? What do you look for in a photographer? Btw-if anyone is interested in critiquing my photos (I know there is PLENTY of room for improvement with my photos), my myspace can be found under the name Pincince Photography, zip code 88101. My wife and I were recently married and hired a profeesional photograppher to take our photos, we signed a contract only to pay a certain amount for the service, on our wedding date. Nothing more. Recently, we have found numerous wedding announcements popping up in community papers with our photo, including in bold print the name of the photographers, their web address, and contact numbers, which to me implies advertisement. I do believe that this is illegal for them to do because they did not have our permission to use the photo for their private use or for commercial purposes. Can any one else let me know what they think? I would like to send her a bill for using our photo.. Normally she would have to pay to advertise, but has turned our announcement into an ad for the local papers all around our entire areas. moreTop Advertising Photographer Links
