Open Question: Bullying at work by manager?
I have worked for a retail company for almost two years. In august last year the manager changed to a different woman. She hired staff from her old store she was managing and seemed to go out her way to make the old staff feel inadequate by either making them upset, embarrasing them or finding problems ( There were 12 of us). Now there is only 3 of the old staff left including me. She treats me differently to the other staff and 9 times out of 10 i am left on the till to serve customers for the full 8/9 hour shift. When I called up to ask if she could give me full time ours a month ago she said i wasn't working well and had to pull my socks up. Because I had left the shop a mess. But she never told the supervisors I had worked with. I feel she is constantly talking about me behind my back and making me feel small by telling me off infront of customers and other staff. The rota is done so i am constantly doing rubbish hours. The new staff have been made supervisors and i told her i would like to become one but she said she didnt think i was up to it but she'd try me. Never heard anything since. I live upstairs of the shop in the flat and numerous times she has opened my mail and sent things back which have got my or my partners name on. Letters have gone missing before we confronted her about this issue but told us it was a genuine mistake so we decided to leave it. Since then I feel she treats me unfairly, tells me i'm not good enough and could easily be replaced, although i have never recieved any warning verbal or written. She constantly checks the cameras and watches what im doing and she doesnt like me talking to the other staff. Recently due to a cock up off the rota we were overstaffed so i said i didnt mind going home early when it wasn't busy which she agreed. So when it went quite at 730 the supervisor agreed i could leave. When i checked the rota the next day she had written i left at 7 so i asked her why and she said because i stood around doing nothing and brought my bag down behind the till which wasnt very proffesional. A woman i know heard this and asked if i was ok and i just started crying, she makes me feel worthless, but always treats the others better letting them go for smoke breaks (even though i dont smoke i get moaned at if i take a small break or have nothing to do) she is always laughing and flirting with the boys which mainly all the staff are boys. Any advice would be appreciated.
moreOpen Question: Rude Retail Employees...Should I feel Embarrassed/Upset?
We went on a trip for a few days not that long ago, and in that case I went to the Mall with my Mom.
Every single store we went into, she made a scene about me and how I didn't need this or that, and how I would need to lose some extra Weight to fit into almost every second thing I picked out. Of course I'm a very picky shopper, and I take my time deciding on things and whether I should sometimes get them or not.
What happened was I already bought a few items from this certain store, but I still had my eye on one more thing. When we were outside the Mall limits, I told my Mom I was going to go back to get it, and for some reason I felt incredibly embarrassed about facing the same Retailer Clerk again.
Is this a Normal Feeling to have when Shopping?
The Second thing is my Mom, she isn't at all helping to make this situation any better. Everytime I walk into a store with her, she says "now your not getting any more clothes", and sometimes walks right out into the Mall and leaves me there.
She also makes a scene when I sometimes send her to pick something up for me. What's making it really bad for me is she tells me "Stay out of that Store!, they know who you are!". I feel so Small and Cornered when she says those things. Almost like some kind of Freak or even wanted Criminal. It makes me even more uneasy about wanting to continue to shop in those places since I wonder if those people who work there really do think that of me.
Another thing is how she walks so fast I can't even keep up with her. She says it takes the Weight off, and she almost makes me break out into Tears when other people are around. I'm her DAUGHTER, NOT some kind of Chew Toy that's there for her to constantly to Naw on.
And when I fall short, she never helps me by adding some Extra on, even if it's $5.00 or the rest of the money she would have left in her Wallet. I ALWAYS lend her money when she needs it!
Overall, this is the thing that has been placed on my Chest for some time now, and I want to know what you think of all of this, and what I could do to make things better for Myself and the Places I still enjoy shopping at. :)

Im 19 with 2 months work experience at a fish and chip store my friend got me when I was 15 the job the boss was an absolute bastard who didnt train gave me no hours and always told me I did everything wrong and was incredibly rude so after 2 months I quit

Coming from the US, there are two markets for bicycles, the specialized bike shop, and the other kind, the kind you find at a Target, K Mart, Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, etc. I am unfamiliar with the retail shops in the UK, and all I find are dedicated bike shops, where bikes are 400 pounds and up... any help in buying a new cheap bicycle?

moreOpen Question: Big Ethical Question?
Hey,
There is a guy named Tom, he works as a van driver for deliveries for a juice company.
I own a retail store in a shopping centre, that Tom frequently delivers to.
He has come into my store and approached my staff for buying juice.
I think he may be selling this juice out the back of the truck, and the company has no idea.
I approached my staff and have come to the conclusion that he indeed is pocketing the money for himself, and the company has no idea of the losses they suffering.
As a fellow entrepreneur i think it would be my "obligation" to tell this fellow business about this individual.
However, from another perspective, this man is very poor, and maybe this is his way of providing for his family. I live in South Africa, and crime is high, if he loses his job there is no doubt that crime may be an option for him, thus putting innocent lives at risk.
Should i tell the company? OR Should i close a blind eye?
moreOpen Question: how do you deal with a disgruntled or abusive customer?
Im in my mid 20s and Im male and work in retail and about a year ago I barred a female customer who I have caught numerous times shoplifting in the storel in which I work in.. Shes in her early 20s and lives in my area and is a bit of a street thug.
Ive let her off with a couple of warnings and after catching her shoplifting about 5/6 times me and my management staff decided to place a ban from her stepping into my our store. Since then I had not seen her around.
However in the past month or 2, I have been seeing her around like in the local area like on the street , at the local shopping center and on the public bus. Ever time she sees me she yells out really abusive things to me and calls me a**ole, *aggot, effin *rick and so many things and that Im a dog for barring her from my work. Its like shes angry that I kept catching herstealing stuff from my work.
Its like shes trying to humiliate me in front of everyone and shes not ashamed of yelling abusive things to me infront of people in public.I get embarrased that people are watching me get verbally abused by a female. She has a new born which she pushes around in her pram and everyone just looks at me and thinks that Ive done something to her to make her yell abusive things to me in public. She has a big grudge against me.
what do I do?..Im sure I will see her again. Theres no point calling the police or any one at work cos this happens outside of my workplace.
I want to go up and slap her but I know that is unthinkable when shes a female and a young mother so how do you deal with young abusive person?
moreResolved Question: What are the minimum staffing levels required in retail?
Four years ago I joined a shop that bought and sold second hand goods, sold graded and brand new products as well as a cheque cashing facility. En route to managing the store over the next few years, we consistently had around 10 staff including the ownership with about 3 sales staff, 4 buying staff and 3 cheque cashers/buyers. However since the recession hit my boss had made no secret of lowering staff levels to the extent where I now open up to the public with two additional staff, not to mention now we are a western union agency and we loan cash against car logbooks.
I am a manager on £7.40 an hour working ten hour days with half an hour break unpaid and two staff. Is it just me or is this illegal?
moreResolved Question: Supposedly, this is illegal. But if you tried doing it............would you get away with it?
I'm talking about: Residing in a retail store.
You live in your retail shop. That's your home.
You got the best of both worlds: You have a place to live, and you have a place to sell stuff.
Supposedly, it's illegal to do that because it's not zoned for residential.
But: How would they catch you? Is that law even enforceable?
and what DEFINES "living" in your retail store?
Is there a set limit on the number of hours you can spend in there?
moreResolved Question: Buying Diamonds online question??? (see detail)?
I'm thinking about purchasing a diamond on Blue Nile and was wondering if the GIA certification date should have any bearing on on my consideration of the diamond. Obviously, at this point i've decided that the cut, color, clarity, and carat meet meet my needs.
The reason i'm asking this question is that these diamonds are sitting in stores across the country / world and are being viewed by customers.. if a diamond was GIA certified 5-8 years ago that could mean that it's been passed on by thousands of shoppers who've been able to view the stone. It could also mean that the stone is located in an area where people are not likely to be able to afford it or it could mean the shop selling it has it marked up to a level that buyers are biting at. (blue nile sells below what a store would generally offer - b/t wholesale and retail) At the same time i fully realize a diamond might be certified yesterday and could not be mounted on an engagement ring for another 10 years.
Please don't reply with answers saying i should view the stone before purchasing, i fully understand the benefits. However, tax and the fact that Blue nile is a reputable business / highly touted company make this a very attractive alternative. (additionally, i have 30 days to send back if the one i get isn't as expected)
moreResolved Question: Please Help! I'm an assistant manager but face abnormal levels of resistance from staff...?
...They basically hate me and think I'm stupid.
I work in a retail store on the high street and did my training in that store. I am now qualified but still face alot of resistance from people when I ask for things to be done. I have informed by store manager but their response was to suck it up and not complain and be authoritative, basically not very supportive.
I have considered that their resistance might be down to me and my behavior and asked them how I should be different and changed to their requests but I still get resistance. I'm now doubting myself and my ability, especially when every new I change goes unnoticed even tho it has boosted sales and improved customer experience.
I now find myself being less motivated or bothered what happens in the shop. Another girl has now been nominated to be trained up to manager level and I'm beginning to feel paranoid only because I perceive her to be better than me and worried that the resistance from staff will effect me being noticed for a promotion.
Any suggestions on how to crush resistance from staff? and how to get that buzz back in how I feel about my work?

moreResolved Question: More than a friendship...or just in my head?
Your Question
More than a friendship...or just in my head?
I have this friend of mine that I've known for about 4 years now. I worked at the same chain retail store, but a different location. I caught notice of him when he stated he had recognized me from before shopping in his store. First glance, I knew I always wanted to be more than friends. He has attended my high school graduation a few years back, gone to July 4th fireworks together, bought gifts for each other, movies, dinners, trips to San Francisco a couple times, and so forth.
There have been a couple times where I have asked him for us to be more than friends but it seems like he gives me excuses. A couple of them, "Jacqueline, we are only friends. You gave me the friend vibe when we first met. I don't understand...you deserve a guy so much better than me. What do you possibly see in me?" Another time at a later date, about a year and half back Jay tried persistently while he was drunk to make a move on me. He started making out with me, but I shot him down because he was drunk. Shortly after that incident, about a month later while I was at work I received a couple voice mails on my cell concerned about her son's whereabouts. Jay did call home, but stated to his mom that he was walking to the airport where I work because I am the only one that cares about him deeply and loves him.
One time I did not go to the store with him because I was sitting in his sister's room having a great personal conversation. "C'mon Jacqueline! Are you going to the store with me or not?" I politely reply no, that I'm comfortable and I'll still be here when he gets back. He finishes getting ready to go, comes back in the room and says, "Jacqueline, quit playing! Let's go!" I told him no, he left and his sister stated to me at the time that I made him very upset. He came back about an hour later and had very little to say to me. I continued on to go to work that evening. Now about a year after this incident his mom busts him out right when I walked into their house. His mom says, "Tell the girl! she has the right to know, she needs to know! Tell her Jay!" I'm puzzled after just walking through the door 20 seconds prior. he wouldn't say nothing, so his mom tells me that the time where I didn't go to the store with him, that later that night after I left, he got so upset that I didn't go and started crying. "Okay mom, now she knows, can we just move on?" He cried over me not going to the store with him...? Why so?
The most recent incident was yesterday evening when I was driving back from the San Francisco bay area after visiting a pilot friend of mine. I received a called from him, he was questioning my whereabouts, then he was like, "...I know all your closest friends. Must be more than a good friend to drive 200 miles just to see him for a few hours." I elaborated a little more to him that it was only 80 miles each way, and I was trying to see a best friend of mine and also my networking pilot friend for help with the start of my aviation career. Seems like a little jealous possibly?
There have been other small incidents like when we go out to dinner and he will say, "I don't want the waiter to be spitting in our food-adding their own special recipe. Look at that interracial couple..." imitating the worse case scenario of a waiter's ideas (in his frame of thought). He did start working at the airport recently in the same terminal, but a different airline, always concerned what time I'm coming to work and when I get a break. His mother calls me her daughter-in-law and he is okay with me calling her "Mom". He's even suggested it out of his mouth that it is okay...though I have never called her "mom" yet. The whole family loves me, even his nieces, nephews, and aunts.
We talk about every day, and typically at least 30min a day on the phone, not including if we hangout at work later that day, then he wants me to call him when I get home to make sure I get in okay. And yes, there are a few text messages throughout the day as well. Does it seem like he likes/loves me? Does he care for me as a friend? How about more than a friend? Is it just in my head? Do you think it has potential for more?
Thanks in advance!

moreResolved Question: Buying an iPod Touch?
How can I persuade my mum to get me an iPod Touch. Would it work if i told her I'd pay her back? [but then I'd have to find the money which is another problem..] Also would you recommend getting an 8gb or 32gb iPod Touch? I have a lot of songs, pictures etc. and I'd also be interested in downloading apps from the iTunes store. There's an iPod Touch on Ebay - 8gb £122.99 OR 32gb £195.99. Which is a good deal compared to the RRP [regular retail price] in normal shops.

moreResolved Question: Are these job interview answers okay?
I've applied for a job at Mcdonalds, don't make fun, because this would be my first job, and I'm really freaking out that I won't get the job. Anyway, I got invited for an interview and an OJE.
I was wondering if you could help me by reading these answers to basic interview questions, and give me your feedback on them?
-why do you want a job (in general)
To gain more customer service skills, and to become more independent.
-why McDonalds?
Because I want to become apart of the team where the logo is known world wide, and I believe I can go far in the future, working at McDonalds.
-how do you handle stress
I usually don't get stressed out, but when I get slightly stressed, I just take a deep breath, and I'll feel okay again.
-any previous experience
I worked in a retail store for work experience, learnt a lot more about customer service.
Also, I am currently taking a catering and hospitality course, where it is essential that I serve customers in our cafe, so that I can get a taste of the customer service skills needed in the food industry. I know I lack experience, but I am definitely willing to learn.
-give an example of a situation where you have had to make an important decision
When we were doing Christmas Dinner at our college cafe, I had to make an important decision because we ran out of Yorkshire Puddings. It was either send dinners out with no Yorkshire puddings or quickly make some more. I made the decision to make some more because that is what the customer asked for.
-if you were on your break in the back and saw a garbage needed to be changed what would you do (a-change it right away b-change it when you were back from your break or c-just leave it isn't your job)
I would change it right away because it is my store as much as everyone else’s and I want to help in any way possible.
-what is the most important part of costumer service in your opinion
Eye contact, a friendly tone of voice, good listening skills and smiles, because these qualities will make the customers feel welcome, and want to recommend McDonalds to their friends and families.
Good example of customer service
I dealt with an unsatisfied customer (product was broken) so I apologized for the inconvenience and got him a new one, I then asked him if there was anything else I could help him with.
Bad customer service
One time I went to a shoe shop with my friends, and the woman who was serving us was quite rude. She didn’t smile, didn’t offer any help, and didn’t look approachable. I haven’t been to that shoe shop since.
Strengths
I am trustworthy, honest, and have good communication skills. I also work very well in a team.
Weaknesses
Some of my friends would say that I am over friendly, and go too far out of my way to help people.
Would you hire me with these answers?
Any tips at interviews and OJE's are very welcome.
Thank-you so much. (:

moreVoting Question: What would cause a persistent amount of phelgm in the upper throat/nasal cavity?
I work inside of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport...home of 300,000 people that go in and out on a daily basis. It's a pretty disgusting place...people sneezing and coughing everywhere without even attempting to cover their mouth at all. Also, the air is apparently recirculated. I work inside of a retail store and we have to dust multiple times a day (with swiffers that attract it, as opposed to a simple duster that scatters it everywhere) to get the thick layer of dust off from the products we sell. All of the shops there seem to have this problem. I've had strep throat 3 or 4 times in the 9 months that I've worked there. I've also had Herpangina once. Several months ago I had what was thought to be an upper respiratory infection. Tons of phelgm that just seemed to constantly build up back there in between the nose and the throat - which would cause me problems when trying to talk because the air would be trying to force it through my nose or something.
A couple of weeks ago, I had this same thing with an extremely sore throat. The doctor prescribed me an antibiotic, even though the rapid strep test was negative. My throat is no longer sore, but I cough up a LOT of phlegm every morning. It resides in the same place...a little in the nose, none in the throat...but a lot of that unknown area (not sure what to call it) between the nose and throat. If I breathe in very heavily through my nose and then try to clear my throat, it brings that phlegm up - and it's almost like a glue-like consistency. Probably a few tablespoons or more each morning.
I am healthy, otherwise...never any medical problems. I'm only 27, so fairly young still. I keep myself in good shape physically and try to eat decent food. The antibiotic that I was prescribed about 12 days ago (which I'm done with now - it was 10 days worth) was Amoxicillin 800mg taken twice per day.
What would cause a persistent amount of phelgm in the upper throat/nasal cavity? In the 9 months that I've worked there, I haven't always had this. It sort of came and went, sometimes worse than others. Like for instance this morning, I woke up and felt it in the area between the throat and nose. I coughed a lot of phlegm up, my throat and post nasal cavity feels a little sore since that's where the phlegm was apparently just sitting all night. It'll be sore for a few hours, and then it goes away. Also, sometimes there is a little bit of either old or fresh blood with the phlegm...apparently because it just sat in that area and irritated it so much by being there that it caused it to be raw and bleed a little. It doesn't make it hard to breathe at other times...on "clear" days it's fine. I also don't have some of the symptoms (or even half) that I saw listed for COPD. It's only hard to breathe because of the phlegm trying to get out - which I've also had happen with common colds for years and years.

I have been thinking about it for some time and now more often than ever. I would like to own my own business and I dont know what to do to get started. moreResolved Question: There is a situation with my boss as work that I am unsure how to handle.?
I am 19yo and am 3weeks into my new job in retail at a custom picture framing place. They have video cameras at each store. I was on 2 shifts by myself throughout the week and on the 1s shift I was very busy with customers which rarely happens and it was my first time dealing with customers by myself with custom framing jobs. As you would expect I was a little flustered as you would be having 3 customers lined up at the same time but that was the only problem I saw, but in the end I got the orders right and all were happy. The 2nd shift was a short and uneventful shift and I rang the girl who was working at the other store, asked her a work related question but we then got sidetraked and started talking socially for about 20mins. During this time I was also cleaning and reaaranging the already immaculate looking shop. I phoned her a second time to clarify something I had done on the till and we talked for 10mins and then a third time to ensure I had done something correctly. When I turned up for work this morning, the girl I was working with for the day gave me a heads up saying that she heard that the boss had watched the surveillence tape of the shifts I had done by myslelf and was very unhappy with me, saying that they thought more of me. Surely after she told me I recieved a phone call from my boss. My boss told me they were very very upset and disaappointed in me, saying that I dealt with customers wrong, did everything the wrong way when quoting and then said I was on the phone not doing anythng for 1.5hours that night! I began to defend myself saying that I did everything right with the quoting and that all customers were happy. BUT she said that I didnt achknowledge customers when I did! She cannot tell this from watching a small screen without sound!!! She then said that on my next shift in a couple of days that she is going to sit with me as we both watch the video of me on those shifts and tell me everything I have done wrong! I KNOW that I should not have been on the phone to another employee for so long but initially it was work related and then I admit it did go for a while but no one entered the store.
I feel 100% crushed. I do not want to be made to watch the tape. I know what I have done wrong and it wont happen again and I have told her that but she still insists on watching it. I feel it is over the top. The boss has no idea that the other emplyees are on the phone to one another for hours some days! I dont want to dob others in but I hate feeling like I am the only one who has done wrong. We (myself and the other emplyees) do so much good and never get praised but always critiqued and yelled at. I feel that some positives as well as the negatives would be great coming from the boss but i dont know how to mention that to her also...
Is my boss being unreasonable? What should I say? Do i defend myself or not bother?
Sorry it is so long but I would love some advice!
moreResolved Question: too cold at work, how to speak to manager who does not care?
I work in a retail shop and my boss insists to keep the main doors open even though we do not have any proper heaters installed and aircondition does not help at all. i know he wants the store to look more attractive to customers but i am 6 months pregnant and cant stand being in that freezing shop for 8 hours a day. its still so cold outside and i tried to talk to him about health and safety but he gets upset. i dont think i need a special treatment because i am expecting a child but i dont want to get ill every week and he is unhappy when anyone tries to call in sick. what would you do?There is something like health and safety regulations and my manager due to law must meet the requirements. that includes making sure that his staff works in conditions that are not a risk to health and keeping the right temperature in the work palce. i know that. the company i work for is huge and well established, they do provide uniforms but they are not coats which you would wear in temperatures i have to work in. anyway, thanks for some helpful answers, i appreciate them.

Or any similiar teen clothing store?
I'm 16, I get straight A's at a private high school, and I've been in Girl Scouts for 10 years, and I already do volunteer service for both of those things.
If not a retail shop, a ice cream or book store perhaps?

moreResolved Question: I am moving to New York from Austin..?
I am a 22 year old college student. I plan on living there this time next year. I currently work in a bakery in a grocery store and I'm looking for a job in the same field there (not necessarily in a bakery, but being a cashier or working in a retail shop or something along those lines). At least while I'm in school. (Going for Graphic Design) Will a degree in Graphic Design get me anywhere in the big apple? I am getting my associates first, then my bachelors.
I plan to move in with roommates on Craigslist (yes I know this may not be the best idea, but it's pretty much my only option, I have bad credit and I can not afford to get my own apt). Will people accept a roommate that is this far away without ever meeting them? I don't know anyone that lives in NYC, is there a website where I can make friends or something? Also, does anyone know the hiring rate in retail??
Also, where should I begin transferring schools? I go to a local community college, and I plan on attending one there as well. Do I need to be a resident for a certain amount of time before I attend school there? I want to move there around March, but to do this I wouldn't be able to attend school in the Spring, and I can't be out of school for longer than six months or I have to start paying on my loans. I have looked into a few community colleges there but they pretty much all seem the same. Does anyone have any reccommendations?
Please help me!!!!! When I ask friends or family for advice, everything thinks I'm living in a dream world. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!! =]
How long will this take to plan? Should I start planning now or is this too soon?
moreResolved Question: Friend says we are copying her...?
My friend tends to go shopping more often than the rest of us because she works in fashion retail. I'd say we were all relatively fashionable and usually wear what is on the high street at any one time but this friend in particular has started making snide remarks that the rest of us are somehow copying her.
For instance, she might show up with something.
E.g. the leather-look jacket and dress style.
And a week or two later (after we have had a chance to go shopping) some of us may also buy a leather-look jacket and wear it on top of a dress.
Another time people started wearing various funky bright coloured nail varnish like neon yellow, green, blue etc. She would wear it first and a week or so later someone else in a group might wear it.
The whole putting flowers in your hair craze, well this happened again, and it happened again with the statement necklaces (i.e. the really big necklaces that everybody has been wearing).
It's not like we are teenagers, we are 25 years old, all have jobs, boyfriends and our own flats. I find this so ridiculous that she says these sorts of things, when they are IN FASHION AND IN EVERY HIGH STREET STORE!
What can I say to her to get her off our backs before this stupidity potentially ends our friendship.

moreResolved Question: Combining retail store AND online sales - controlling inventory?
I have experience starting online stores, but for my next venture, I want to have a brick-and-mortar store as well.
If I already have a whole bunch of stock sitting around, it seems a waste not to let local customers shop directly with me. I like interacting with customers in person, but the bread-and-butter of sales comes from the internet.
Here's the catch, though: the industry I'm in, there is a huge variety of items available. This means that I don't usually have a whole lot of EACH item on hand. Sometimes as little as 1 or 2 of a particular item. That means that it would be impractical to have items on the retail floor plus more items in a warehouse, without investing a huge amount of money into doubling my inventory. Also I can't afford to rent a warehouse, and a retail storefront, and employees for both locations.
I'm envisioning some way to stock the retail store and essentially use the store itself it as the online "warehouse" as well. So that when items sell on the website, they're picked directly from the sales floor. Yes, I know doubleselling might be an issue but again, the huge variety of products makes it unlikely that two customers are buying the same exact thing at the same exact time, and I like to underestimate my inventory in the computer slightly to avoid problems like that.
Are there any software or retail programs that can integrate both a Point Of Sale AND real-time online inventory, in one system?
I've dallied with the thought of using Yahoo Stores for both online sales AND as the Point of Sale by running each live sale through its checkout just for the ease of tracking inventory, but I don't savor the idea of handing more money over to Yahoo for sales which are not actually Internet based.
Anyone have some pointers on this? is there such a software out there? Or a way to integrate two different systems so they talk to each other?
moreResolved Question: What do you look for when shopping online?
I'm looking to increase my web sales, and am having trouble competing with the "big names" that send a paper catalog every 3 weeks....
I have a small business, specialty sport retail, with high-end, and mid-priced quality equipment and apparel. Great customer service (we've been told), 9 out of 10 employees actively compete in our sport, yet it's been tough to transfer the in-store success to our website (as far as profit).
We get the hits and page views, and items in the cart, yet people won't "pull the trigger" and actually purchase! It's driving me nuts!
Sure, we sent coupons to current clients, promo codes in advertising, do banner ads....and all that seems to "discount" us, and ends up losing $ in the long run.
Any other small businesses see growth online??

doing some research for a design project, would love to hear your thoughts!
with the increase in technology and being able to buy anything over the internet, will there be any point in having shopping centres/ stores? and if they are still around how would they have to change to give people something more than just a product? moreResolved Question: Do you tend to shop less or more at Wal-Mart?
I find that I go to other stores more often when I know that Wal-Mart is cheaper. After watching the news today, I think I know why. They are eliminating other brands and going with their own store brand. The new report said they are going with their store brand and only one other retail brand in many areas of the store... with the retail brand not being the one most popular but the one that funnels most money into Wal-Mart advertising. ---> Case in point... Arm & Hammer laundry detergent... in my opinion is about as good as water with a little spit. Wal-Mart pulled it off the shelf
If all of that is true, it seems like the first time Wal-Mart has made a marketing blunder. Remember the blunder with the "New Coke" that was an obvious failure to almost all consumers before they trashed the idea many months later. It's almost unconceivable that our largest retailer is following this boondoggle. I think it is great for competitors but I think Wal-Mart is missing the numbers because they are focusing on the bad economy which has led them down this path and as we emerge, they will probably find they have lost market share and emboldened their competitors.
It was all very subtle with me. Little by little I couldn't find my favorite brands and thought they must be sold out. Eventually I realized they were not carrying those brands and with the news today it confirmed my observation. I do have to admit that I'm a little sick of looking for toothpaste and having to read the label on each and every brand to get the right one. Ditto the toilet paper... the large, the giant, the jumbo, the soft, the fragrance, etc. And how many different fragrances can Tide use?
Do you agree with my observation?

moreResolved Question: I was caught shop lifting in a retail store. As I tried to walk out the door, a gentleman placed his hands on?
I was caught shoplifting in a retail store. As I tried to walk out the last door, a man put his hand on me, said he was security and had me turn around to go back in the store. When I got back into the store, I took off at a very fast pace, almost running but not fully running. Another guy was in front of me in the isle, some feet away, and tried to stop me, also saying he was security. Neither guy identified themselves with a badge. As I approached the 2nd guy, I tried to get away from him by lowering my body, but he tackled me to the floor. I was scared, and continued to try to get away before the 2nd guy put my arm behind my back and escorted me to the office where I was detained until police arrived. During the tackle on the floor of the store, apparently the 2nd guy said he got his knee hurt and a small scratch on his hand, that had a very small amt of bleeding. He said that he went to the ER and nothing was done about his knee, he was still walking. Anyway, now instesd of being charged with just retail theft, I am being charged with burlary with "intent" to injure, which is not the case. What am I looking at here? I live in PA.

moreVoting Question: I'm having phone upgrade issues?
I've had the same phone for a little over 2 1/2 years now, with the same number, with Verizon Wireless. Recently, I went into the shop to get a phone upgrade, since my original one was both horrendously ancient, simplistic, and.. well, broken. I had some issues as to which phone to purchase, since cost is obviously a factor. I decided on the LG Env touch (even though it has a required data plan now), and proceeded to acquire it. My dad (who pays the bill, as I am underage, unfortunately) insisted that the extra ten dollars a month for data would break the bank, and he wasn't allowing me to get it unless I fronted a year's advance on the plan. I gave him he required funds, along with the cost of the phone, in cash. When we got to the store, we initiated the start of the usual phone purchase/transfer data thing. I was then politely alerted that my upgrade had already been used by my mother, who was until recently on my same plan. Of course, I asked for them to check again, and got the same result. I have to wait another year to upgrade, or pay the full retail price of the phone that I want. My question is - given these circumstances, is there any way at all I can avoid paying the incredibly expensive sum of five hundred dollars alone for a phone, along with another one hundred twenty for the data plan? Some way to get reduced prices would be excellent. Just suggest a way, please.

I work in retail sales at a children's clothing shop and I have reason to believe the store manager has been forging my name on corporate documents. The file cabinet is locked and only the manager and assistant manager have access to it. The only way I have to prove this is to see my file. If I request access to it do they have to show it to me?Thank you for your answers so far. I am in the state of Texas. I have thought about filing a complaint with the police but since I don't have proof I am not sure how this process would work, and I don't want to allow the manager time to destroy or remove the forged documents. The store I work at is in Texas, with corporate offices located in Conneticut.
moreVoting Question: I want to open a retail shop but family member saying not with 4 children & stick with online?
Hi. I used to be a top UK salesperson and manager for a finance company.
Since being a SAHM to our 4 children (11yrs, 4 yr old twins and 18 mnth old) for 4 yrs, I have been selling sucessfully on ebay. I now want to open a proper retail store that utilises my passion and expertise, and fills a well researched niche, and continue selling on ebay alongside.
My husband could leave his job to look after the children and I'm confident in my ability to match or exceed his income X5.
However, a family member, thinks that a shop is way too much commitment with children and I should just sell online. All of my life she has tried to limit me for some reason and she wrongly gives no credit to my husband. It has got me thinking though...Should I/ Could I open a shop or not? Is it really that hard?
Anyone care to comment or advise please? Also I am interested to hear from anyone who was in a similar situation and opened shop or fulfilled their dream? Anyone who had children and succeeded?Anyone open a shop and regret it? Please do let me know what you think. Thankyou! Please reply!Owning a proper online shop is also owning a business, with commitment to keeping it full, managing stock and maintaining great custmer relationships. The children will go to nursery every afternoon (for fun, as they love it) so if my husband was at home he could have some man time then. He would also be included in the business and we could share responsibilities...

moreResolved Question: When did 126 film actually disappear from retail stores?
When I was a little kid, around the mid-1980's, I had a 126 camera. I don't remember exactly what kind it was, but it was just some kind of simple point and shoot camera. Maybe a Kodak Instamatic. My parents had probably just bought it at a thrift shop or antique shop as a toy for me to play with. (I was about 8 old and I was fascinated with cameras even then.) But I did actually use it and I took a lot of pictures with it. I distinctly remember that it used 126 film cartridges, and I very clearly remember what the cartridges looked like.
I remember seeing 126 cartridges in stores for a while all throughout the 80's and maybe even the early 90's. But at some point, they just disappeared. I don't remember when. And I wasn't seriously into photography when I was a kid. I liked taking pictures, but I didn't know that much about different kinds of cameras and film.
My question is when did 126 film actually disappear from retail stores? I mean, when was the last time that you could walk into a K-Mart or Target store or whatever, and buy a 126 cartridge and easily still find local labs that would develop it?
