Voting Question: to the party saying "no" ......care to look into the mirror?

Why cyberspace isn’t, and will never be, nirvana By Clifford Stoll | NEWSWEEK From the magazine issue dated Feb 27, 1995 After two decades online, I’m perplexed. It’s not that I haven’t had a gas of a good time on the Internet. I’ve met great people and even caught a hacker or two. But today, I’m uneasy about this most trendy and oversold community. Visionaries see a future of telecommuting workers, interactive libraries and multimedia classrooms. They speak of electronic town meetings and virtual communities. Commerce and business will shift from offices and malls to networks and modems. And the freedom of digital networks will make government more democratic. Baloney. Do our computer pundits lack all common sense? The truth in no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works. Consider today’s online world. The Usenet, a worldwide bulletin board, allows anyone to post messages across the nation. Your word gets out, leapfrogging editors and publishers. Every voice can be heard cheaply and instantly. The result? Every voice is heard. The cacophany more closely resembles citizens band radio, complete with handles, harrasment, and anonymous threats. When most everyone shouts, few listen. How about electronic publishing? Try reading a book on disc. At best, it’s an unpleasant chore: the myopic glow of a clunky computer replaces the friendly pages of a book. And you can’t tote that laptop to the beach. Yet Nicholas Negroponte, director of the MIT Media Lab, predicts that we’ll soon buy books and newspapers straight over the Intenet. Uh, sure. What the Internet hucksters won’t tell you is tht the Internet is one big ocean of unedited data, without any pretense of completeness. Resolved Question: Which items in Hong Kong are consider to be cheaper then in most other countries?

Currently I am living in Dubai. I heard that the prices for many items in Hong Kong (like Apple computers for example) are much cheaper then in the other countries. So I have an intention to start my little business of exporting goods. I am not rich, so i am planning to start with an item which does not requite big investments. Also for now I do not want to make any shipments, just carry the goods in my suitcase. 1. Which items are good to buy in Hong Kong? 2. Are there any duty taxes for electronic items and how much? 3. Your advice. Is it maybe better to purchase online? 4. In general, which South Asian countries are good for shopping. ( I have been in a few countries there and i know that Thailand is getting more expensive and Indonesia is good for clothes...)(Oh I am talking about South East Asia off course:)To Kirraina This is exactly what I am doing now. Using different ways to find out the answers. As I mentioned, I am not ready for a big volumes yet. I just have chance to travel to South East Asia often, so I just want to make something out of it. My understanding is that exporting from PRC requires quantities and some logistic which then requires extra time and expenses. But I really appreciate your advice about Fair. It is a good idea. And as you doing it already, hope you would be able to share some experience with me. more

Resolved Question: More people talk on a digital device than people talk face to face. Is this tech good for society? or bad?

Warfare is not what I am talking about. Many text, and that is what is going to destroy communication. People are told harsh words over electronic devices and this is what communication is going to be controlled by? Don't ever have to leave home. Shop online, manage money, talk to people, etc. What do you think? more

Resolved Question: Are there any online car shops that will buy a brand new ECM?

I was having problems with the alternator of my 2001 Mazda MPV this year. My mechanic forwarded me to an electronic specialist who told me that I needed a new computer for my car. I bought the computer, but it turned out that my mechanic was installing the wrong alternator in my car. Mazda will not accept returns on electrical parts, the electronic specialist won't buy back the computer, my mechanic can't find anyone to buy it, I've tried selling it on Ebay and other online auction places, and I've been to Salvage yards who won't take it either. I can't find places online that will buy it, so I'm hoping that there is a dealer or shop out on the internet that will buy it. more

Resolved Question: Do 'Site Models' even exist?

I have seen a growing number of questions on YA recently involving girls aged around 14-18 either claiming to be site models or asking who a particular site model is. It seems to me that the method to become a site model is this... 1) Take a very poor quality image of yourself either at arms length or in a mirror. 2) Upload it to Photobucket. 3) Claim that you are now a site model. I shop online all the time. I buy clothes, electronic goods, just about everything, and I have never seen one single image on any site which involves a teenagers own photo they have taken themself, it is ALWAYS a professional photo with a proper model. I have Googled various names of so called famous site models and all that ever comes up is very poor images taken by the said person and no links to any websites in which they are doing any 'modeling'. In my eyes being a model involves having your photo taken by a professional photographer while you are promoting/wearing/holding (etc) what you are told to wear/hold (etc) and that image will go into print or onto a website and the model will get paid. I have found no evidence of any site model doing anything other than upload an image of themselves and claim to suddenly be a model. Has anybody ever known a website that has ever purchased these so called 'models' images and used them to promote anything?. Then again I could be completely wrong!, maybe people are buying these images?, but what they could be promoting is beyond me?.... . more

Voting Question: How Much will YOU pay for the Nationalized Health Care reform?

INDIVIDUAL MANDATE: All the plans require individuals to get health insurance, with government subsidies or expanded programs to help people with lower incomes purchase coverage. New online exchanges would be created to help people shop for policies at more affordable group rates. About 15 percent of U.S. residents, or some 46 million, lacked health insurance in 2008, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.-----This is similar to requirements of Auto Insurance, http://www.compuquotes.com/average-costs-of-insurance.html----This bill will require YOU to pay for your insurance. How much is yet to be determined. EXPANDING COVERAGE: President Barack Obama and top Democrats in Congress say they want to cover all Americans, yet the proposals would still leave millions of people not eligible for Medicare uninsured, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. Under the House proposal, about 17 million people, almost half of them illegal immigrants, would lack coverage, the CBO estimated. The plan by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Baucus would leave about 25 million uninsured, a third of them illegal immigrants, the CBO said.------ How do you FORCE Illegal immigrants to pay for insurance? They don't pay for Auto Insurance. The uninsured costs to insurance are simply transferred to those who do pay for it.-----Again how much will that be? INSURER REQUIREMENTS: Insurers would no longer be able to reject new customers with pre-existing medical conditions; new restrictions would be placed on their ability to set premiums.----What are the "new" restrictions which will set premiums for private insurers? Is this a means to end their programs, thereby establishing ONLY government run insurance? REDUCING COSTS: The legislation is intended to lower long- term health-care costs for consumers and the government.----Granted, the more people in a particular program the less it will cost (LONG TERM), but the statistics point out 46 million will be included within which program? The Governments or Private? The additionally insured will no doubt increase the costs to the individual policy holder. Again how much will that be? All the plans call for greater access to preventive care, either with new programs or the elimination of co-payments, a change that proponents claim will save money by keeping people from developing diseases that are more costly to treat. They also call for more use of electronic systems to promote better record-keeping and reduce overhead costs.---Simply put this is Control over your day to day life. Standards will be em placed to prevent you from having that Hoagie with extra mayo.----Record keeping on a Government Run Nationalized Health Care Mandated fulfillment will ultimately undermine your INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY, no matter if it is in this bill or not eventually the Government will know everything about YOU. Obama favors a new independent commission to set reimbursement rates for providers who treat patients in Medicare, the federal program for the elderly. The Senate finance committee draft embraced this idea, saying it would reduce costs by taking authority away from Congress and making payment decisions less politically charged. Members of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of self-described fiscally conservative House Democrats, also support the plan.----Good Idea BIOLOGICS: Biologic drugs, which are made from living cells by companies such as Thousand Oaks, California-based Amgen Inc., would get 12 years of protection from generic competition under a plan passed by the Senate health panel and the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The White House had sought to limit the exclusivity to seven years as a way of bringing prices down.----Concessions made to Pharmaceutical companies in return for political clout in advance of the reform bill. In other words the Pharms said they would cut costs up front in order to get their return long term. COMPARING TREATMENTS: Legislation in both the House and Senate would create research centers to examine the efficacy of various health-care services, devices, treatments and procedures. None of the bills require the research be used to force health providers to adopt new procedures or policies to cut costs, which is an administration priority. Obama provided $1.1 billion in the stimulus act to fund so-called comparative effectiveness research.-----Teams will be in place to determine WHAT care (policy/procedures) is needed based on statistics for any particular disease. We all know statistics are only for those who read them not those who are a part of them. Differences PUBLIC OPTION: The three House panels and Senate health committee would create a new government-run insurance program designed to compete with private companies such as Minnetonka, Minnesota-based UnitedHealth Group Inc. and help reduce prices for insurance in the market. The House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Senate health panel require that the new entity ne more

I bought it from a smoke shop because I was too impulsive to order it online, On the box and manual it just says electronic cigarette without any other brand name, the box and manual do look nice, not too cheap but I'm still a little nervous about it. Also the cigarette itself gives off a little bit of a smell without me even smoking it. So basically it's a white box that says electronic cigarette in chrome colored letters, my question is have any of you heard or seen this kind before? And should I be nervous about smoking it or are they all about the same. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Things to know in order to find the right relay?

I'm making a proximity sensor circuit and want to use a relay to trigger lights or toy motors or something. My question is what do I need to know to figure out which relay I need. I know the voltage and amperage(9v -400mA) of my signal and a rough idea of my main load (one hundred LEDs or 4-5 toy motors). How exactly do manufacturers call these ratings and is there a standard naming convention for relays similar to transistors and diodes? I can;t order online so local electronic shop will have to do. more

Resolved Question: Question over Big Brother is Watching Everyone.?

It a question in my homework. Here is the article you need to read first and the question is below, Privacy eroding, bit by byte Computers, Engineers Find New Ways to Keep Tabs On Us First there were security cameras, sprouting like mushrooms on street corners and buildings. Then came shopper cards, offering discounts in exchange for details about buying habits. In recent years, we've seen the emergence of electronic tags or "cookies" on the Internet, software that monitors e-mail, GPS devices that pinpoint our position on the planet, and a growing number of machines that capture fingerprints and face prints. Now comes the news that federal regulators approved the injection of microchips under the skin, enabling physicians with the right gear to know who someone is without having to ask. And yesterday, the omniscient-seeming search engine Google bested itself by announcing a service to probe for information both online and in your own machine. One company official called it a "photographic memory for your computer." Google says no personal information will be sent back to the company. But if it feels like you can't do anything these days without someone looking over your shoulder, you're not just paranoid. Cheap computers, blazing fast networks and clever engineers are finding more and more ways to keep tabs on where you go and what you buy, generally with your permission. They're even getting better at guessing what you'll do next. "It's this whole new world. It's sort of like all these little details about our lives are being recorded," said Richard M. Smith, an Internet security consultant in Boston. "We love the conveniences. We love the services. But people kind of instinctively know there's a dark side to this. They just hope it won't happen to them." Smaller, Faster and Cheaper To be sure, companies have long gathered personal and shopping information to better market to customers, often with dubious results. Who hasn't received junk mail or telemarketing calls that seem to have no connection with their lives? But those initiatives are fast improving' and accelerating as people live more of their lives tethered to cell phones, the Internet and the rest of the wired world, where trading off personal information is part of the price of admission. Think about a typical day. An advertising service is notified when you check the sports scores on the Web. The EZ-Pass transponder signals when you go through a tollbooth. The pharmacy collects personal medication details and sends them along to data companies for analysis. At work, some employees now use face recognition systems to get in to their offices, or they type on machines that trace every keystroke. "Every move you make is becoming part of your permanent record," said Peter P. Swire, a privacy expert and law professor at Ohio State University. "The trend is smaller, faster, cheaper." Rapid Accumulation There's no question the data are accumulating, and faster than many people understand. A few years ago, researchers at the University of California at Berkeley estimated that all the information created by humanity by 1999 would double by about now. One of the leading aggregators of personal information, an Arkansas company called Acxiom Corp., has roughly a million times more information about adult Americans and their families than when it first sold stock two decades ago. Other commercial information services routinely tout their ability to access some 20 billion records. And that's not counting the digital details that come in the form of photographs, videotapes and sensor readings. Most people know companies can mine credit card data, loan records and other transactions. But few know that companies already offer video-mining services as well. One day we might be able to mine the information generated by radio frequency identification chip implanted in our arms. Or we might just use a Google search service custom-made for RFID, as the chips are known. Not everybody is vexed by these trends. Homeland security, law enforcement and intelligence officials are rushing to take advantage of this wealth of information to protect the country. Web sites like Amazon.com, cell phone services, catalogue retailers, financial services companies and many others are increasingly adept at using data systems to serve customers. Ask people whether they'd give up those services, and many would offer a resounding "no." David Brin, an author and futurist, believes that recent technological developments have revolutionized the ability of people to see, through cameras around the globe, and remember details through almost unimaginably rich warehouses of information that serve as proxies for our limited memories. He predicts that we will one day be able to "know" almost everybody in the world through instant access to personal information in ubiquitous dat more

Resolved Question: 1. What have been the key success factors for Sony?

Sony Started as a radio repair shop, founded by Masuru Ikura and Akio Morita after Would War II. The company began its long history of producing compact consumer electronics in 1957, when it introduced the World’s first pocket-sized all-transistor radio. The company’s name, Sony, was taken from Sony, the Latin word for “sound” Sony went on to invest a series of transistor-based TVs and increasingly smaller audiocassette recorders. In 1979, the Sony Walkman introduced the World to a new, portable way of listening to music. Sony became a world leader in consumer electronics and was the first Japanese company to have its shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange. In the late 1980s, Sony began expanding into media, purchasing a U.S. record company (CSB records for $22 billion in 1988). And a major Hollywood studio (Columbia Pictures for $4.9 billion in 1989). The purchases made Sony a major force in the entertainment industry. The importance of marketing at Sony started with Akio Morita, who said that for a company to be successful, it must have three kinds of creativity: creativity to make inventions, creativity in planning and production, and creativity in marketing. Creativity in marketing at Sony means not just cleaver ads, but deep insight into its customers. For example, Sony knows its playstation customers like to find clues and to decode things. So Sony’s ads for playstation 2, like “Signs,” feature a young man walking the streets of a city where he encounters various signs foreshadowing the events. Mannequins appear in a store window, arms outstretched, and point enigmatically to something that’s about to happen. “The lead character is almost in the midst of his own role-playing game. He needs to follows clues to save the heroine”, said Andrew House, Sony’s executive vice president of marketing. In the ads, “we were essentially trying to tap into a range of emotions that we think we deliver in the games – intrigue, forebonding, excitement, panic, relief and achievement at the end”. Sony’s marketing also includes careful measurement of each campaign’s effectiveness. Foe example, Sony runs 30-second commercials for its Playstation as part of the previews in more than 1,800 theatres and on 8,000 movie screens. The ads appear before such films as “The Cat in the Hat”. Sony Computer Entertainment America has been running movie ads for six years.” Cinema advertising has been very effective for us”, said Amil Blaire, director of product marketing.” The reason why we have committed to cinema every year is the tremendous unaided recall shown by our own research and communicus – commissioned ad tracking”. Another example of measurement is Sony’s GenY youth marketing efforts. “The online program promoting the NetMD ATRAC CD Walkman and Cybershot U30 ran July 1 through September 30, 2003, and we found that more than 70 percent static banners”, said Serge Del Grosso, Director of Media and Internet Strategy, Sony Electronics”. In fact, Sony has even developed a direct-marketing solution which it sells to other companies who want to measure marketing effectiveness. The product, called eBridge[TM], allows marketers to use video, measure the effectiveness of the campaign, and gain insight into the target audience, all in one package. Sony expects that the next big breakthrough will not come from a single new electronic device.Rather, Sony President Kunitake Ando says that the future lies in making a whole range of devices more usefully linking them in a networked home-entertainment system. The company believes that its clout in consumer electronics, combined with its media content, will allow it to steer that convergence in a way that suits it. Whether the future of convergence resides in TV’s or PC’s or devices , $62-billion Sony makes every one of them- with a strong brand name that gives them an extra push off retail shelves around the world. 1. What have been the key success factors for Sony? 2. What recommendations would you make to senior marketing executives going forward? What should they he sure to do with its marketing? more

Resolved Question: What do I need to do to fix my 97 Blazer?

Okay... I seriously need some help here. I drive a 97 Blazer and its starting to crap out on me pretty bad. It wouldn't start for me the other day no matter what I did so I had my friend come over and look at it... After a few too many hours of trial and error, We finally came across this post online to try some electronic cleaner in the ignition switch... Well, Eventually, It worked... Part time anyways. Before that, My gauges wouldn't come on and neither would my dash lights. My truck would turn over but never start. Now, After spraying the key hole with the electronic cleaner and waiting a minute or two with my key turned forward, My dash lights and gauges will turn on and I can usually start my truck up. Well, I was driving today and I was getting up to speed... Some where between 35 and 45 and all the sudden my speedometer starts climbing like crazy. It goes all the way up to 90 very fast and I pull over to the side of the road and turn my truck off for fear of it blowing up on me! The speedometer continued to climb to 100 and click and then just set there with the car off. I sat there for a minute or two once again and turned my truck back on and once it finally started up for me, The speedometer stayed at 100 for about a half mile or so before eventually returning to my true speed. I'm beginning to think that I need to take this thing to an exorcist as opposed to a shop. Anyone... Please please help. more
