It’s not that I haven’t had a gas of a good time on the Internet. I’ve met great people and even caught a hacker or two. But today, I’m uneasy about this most trendy and oversold community. Visionaries see a future of telecommuting workers, interactive libraries and multimedia classrooms. They speak of electronic town meetings and virtual communities. Commerce and business will shift from offices and malls to networks and modems. And the freedom of digital networks will make government more democratic. Baloney. Do our computer pundits lack all common sense? The truth in no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works. Consider today’s online world. The Usenet, a worldwide bulletin board, allows anyone to post messages across the nation. Your word gets out, leapfrogging editors and publishers. Every voice can be heard cheaply and instantly. The result? Every voice is heard. The cacophany more closely resembles citizens band radio, complete with handles, harrasment, and anonymous threats. When most everyone shouts, few listen. How about electronic publishing? Try reading a book on disc. At best, it’s an unpleasant chore: the myopic glow of a clunky computer replaces the friendly pages of a book. And you can’t tote that laptop to the beach. Yet Nicholas Negroponte, director of the MIT Media Lab, predicts that we’ll soon buy books and newspapers straight over the Intenet. Uh, sure. What the Internet hucksters won’t tell you is tht the Internet is one big ocean of unedited data, without any pretense of completeness. Lacking editors, reviewers or critics, the Internet has become a wasteland of unfiltered data. You don’t know what to ignore and what’s worth reading. Logged onto the World Wide Web, I hunt for the date of the Battle of Trafalgar. Hundreds of files show up, and it takes 15 minutes to unravel them–one’s a biography written by an eighth grader, the second is a computer game that doesn’t work and the third is an image of a London monument. None answers my question, and my search is periodically interrupted by messages like, “Too many connectios, try again later.” Won’t the Internet be useful in governing? Internet addicts clamor for government reports. But when Andy Spano ran for county executive in Westchester County, N.Y., he put every press release and position paper onto a bulletin board. In that affluent county, with plenty of computer companies, how many voters logged in? Fewer than 30. Not a good omen. Point and click: Then there are those pushing computers into schools. We’re told that multimedia will make schoolwork easy and fun. Students will happily learn from animated characters while taught by expertly tailored software.Who needs teachers when you’ve got computer-aided education? Bah. These expensive toys are difficult to use in classrooms and require extensive teacher training. Sure, kids love videogames–but think of your own experience: can you recall even one educational filmstrip of decades past? So how come my local mall does more business in an afternoon than the entire Internet handles in a month? Even if there were a trustworthy way to send money over the Internet–which there isn’t–the network is missing a most essential ingredient of capitalism: salespeople. What’s missing from this electronic wonderland? Human contact. Discount the fawning techno-burble about virtual communities. Computers and networks isolate us from one another. A network chat line is a limp substitute for meeting friends over coffee. No interactive multimedia display comes close to the excitement of a live concert. And who’d prefer cybersex to the real thing? While the Internet beckons brightly, seductively flashing an icon of knowledge-as-power, this nonplace lures us to surrender our time on earth. A man goes on the internet luring in a girl who is young. He only meets women online not in person. The man is pretty different looking than his photo. He covers up his height, bald head, everything with photo shop. The guy claims he wants a long term dating relationship. wants to get married, have kids, but when he talks to the girl on the phone, he asks for a nude photo- saying I want to see within 3 weeks of talking to her on the phone, asks her for phone sex 15 times, then states he wants the girl to sneak out of her home for real oral sex in his car or in the library. The two retailer web sites I am going to evaluate are The Body Shop website (TBS) and The Bath and Body Work website (BBW). As a consumer, I realize TBS is more successful, because of its pleasing visual appeal, smooth easy access, and understandable information. TBS has better visual appeal than BBW web. Visual appeal is the setting of pictures, color tones and graphic presentations which always give us the first impression. A web design expert, Tom Dahm states, “Color is also important for emphasizing the most important parts of our page. Remember that the purpose of Web design is to draw the visitor's eye to key page elements.” (2001). TBS keep using green consistently to highlight its natural ingredients, so the basic colors of website are green, white and black. On the homepage, it presents the products in front of the leaves with the black background. The clear background colors are not only for emphasizing TBS’s natural idea but also for highlighting of the soft color of its skin product’s image. TBS impacts visitors to have a positive impression about its natural products by using leaves in the background to make a color contrast with its products’ surface tone. In addition, there is a big rectangular picture in the middle of the website and three small rectangular pictures on its bottom. For all pictures, it shows the products on the left and descriptions on the right. Using this simple design can help the consumer to discover the products and the promotion at same time. The heading also defines the important promotion explicitly, and makes consumer easily to get into the sale event. In contrast, BBW is using a light brown color in autumn. Okay, well, I've been spending WAY too much time on the computer, and the question thing will only allow so many characters. Another question of mine is: what do you do when you're bored? It's summer, and I have pretty much absolutely NOTHING to do. Seriously. I'm busy from 9-12:40 and from 3:30-6, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays also from 7-8, but every spare moment I get, I spend on the Internet. It's a miracle the modem thing for my computer hasn't exploded yet. I do have some summer homework, but it's more like summer reading; it's spread over a long period of time so you only have to spend like 15 minutes on it every day, and then that's the end of it. Therefore, I have way too much free time on my hands. I'm guessing another reason that I like spending so much time on the computer is because I'm a very social person, I like hanging out with my friends and I love talking and stuff, but also because this guy I like is leaving this city for good (he's going to some awesome place in the middle of the ocean, haha, an island) and he's leaving this Saturday, and I'm leaving this Sunday, therefore, I'm always hoping that he'll be online, you know? It's a really great day out today, sun and everything, even though it's on the hot side :) the thing is, none of my friends live near me (most of their houses are all 10-15 minutes away by CAR), there isn't an outdoor swimming pool available anywhere near me, there isn't a beach near me, there isn't a shopping mall near me (all the shopping malls in my city are crap) and I'm just SICK of going on the Internet all the time. I can't play basketball or soccer because I don't like those sports unless I'm playing with my friends and there's nobody at home except for me. I don't want to read because that's still an indoor thing, and just walking around outside listening to my iPod is pointless. I have a cat, but I don't have a dog, so it's not like I can walk it or something. I have a bike, but I wouldn't know where to bike to and it's not like I can just bike around (okay, so maybe I could, but that is, again, NOT fun without a friend) and it just gets boring around here. I don't want to watch TV or use the Internet or go on Facebook or MySpace any longer because everybody else always has something to do. I baked a batch of cookies and that took like 10 minutes. I just want to do something outside. He bought televisions sets, video games, jewelry, shoes, clothes, laptops, reserved furniture,printers, cell phones,and computer software using these cards. He even tried to order a vehicle online with the cards. He went shopping to the mall as well. We still don't know how much stuff he ordered. We are going through the internet history to see what places he ordered from. My grandmother wants to prosecute him. She dreamed of her mother's chocolate chip cookies, especially after the day at school, and hours of shopping at mall. The day's events soared through her mind, slowly and carefully, as she had time to remember the day: school had been just as uneventful as ever, with boring lessons and crumpled notes being passed around. After school, Laurie went to the mall with Ashlee Parker, her best friend, and Jenny Kole, her other best friend. They shopped for accessories, or as Jenny called them, "extra trash to bring home." Jenny was obviously not a shopaholic, unlike Ashlee and Laurie. I have this problem with spending, after a LOT of internet research, I was surprised to find it's an actual disorder that happens to lots of people... (I thought it was just me) ... I don't use credit cards, I use my debit card, BUT I do spend my student loan money on irrelevant junk... (or awesome things that I really really wanted) ... I bought a PS3 last summer and it stayed in its box for 2 months (hidden) then in my sister's room for a while, then made its "debut" into the household a couple weeks ago... I hide a lot of the stuff I buy, and I don't use a lot of the stuff I buy... I can't help it, when it happens... I don't realize what's going on 'til after I see the "estimated arrival date" on the shipping page... (I do pretty much all of it online, BUT I do my fair share when in the mall too) ... ... ... last week I spent almost $2,000 on christmas presents for people... and I NEED that money (it was the last of what I had) for next semester's tuition...
