Open Question: This passage would most likely appear in which type of publication ? (Geography textbook or Geology textbook)?

The appearance and character of a hardened lava field depend on numerous factors. Among the key variables are the chemical nature of the magma and the degree of viscosity of the liquid rock once it begins to flow. Since the ultimate nature of lava is influenced by chemical composition, it is possible to predict certain aspect of the final appearance of the field from a sample of the molten fluid. The main components of lava are silica and various oxides, including those of potassium, iron, calcium , magnesium, sodium, and aluminum. Magnesium and iron oxides are found in high concentrations in the dark-col-ored basic basalt, while silica, soda and potash preponderate in the lighter-colored, acidic fel-site rocks. The viscosity of the liquid rock helps to determine the appearance of the hardened field's surface. When it issues, the lava is red or even white-hot. It soon begins to cool, and the surface darkens and crusts over. In extremely viscous flows, the underpart may yet be in motion as the surface solidifies. The crust breaks up into a mass of jagged blocks of rock that are carried as a tumbling , jostling mass on the surface of the slowly moving stream. When the stream eventually stops and hardens, the field is the extremely rough and difficult to traverse. n the other hand, highly liquid lava may harden with much smoother surfaces that exhibit ropy, curved, wrinkled, and wavelike forms. more

Open Question: This is my understanding of the word Connection?

Connection: A mutually beneficial union of one or more parts. Each bolstering and strengthening the others without detriment to any part of the individual or whole. A rigid connection is a fixed none branching unyielding non flexible joint. A connection is a two or more way flow of .....................................................Force, fluid, energy etc unless something else acts upon it to make it otherwise. Resolved Question: Thermo question re: Mass flow rate in a steam condenser?

Alright, little rusty at thermodynamics, I feel like this is an easy question but I'm stuck trying to find a formula that doesn't seem to exist. I've got a condenser/heat exchanger. I know the pressure and quality of the steam on both sides (one side is a saturated liquid) and I know the inlet and outlet temperatures of the coolant. I know the mass flow rate of the steam/water, what I need to find is the mass flow rate of the coolant. Everything I try gets turned around because the working fluid (steam) doesn't change temperatures, only quality (it maintains the same pressure and saturated temperature). Thanks in advance if you can point me in the right direction! more

Open Question: Foam in coolant resivor?

I tested thermostat, bypassed heater core, see no leaks in radiator, no water in oil, and car is not over heating but for some reason I'm getting foam in the coolant resivor when I reach a highway RPM. Voting Question: Capacitors and Fluid Flow Rates Investigations... A2 Physics Coursework suggestions?

I am soon going to be doing an A level physics coursework investigation. I need ideas as to what to do it on. I have considered investigating capacitors, by making one and varying factors such as the overlapping area, plate separation and dielectric material. However on its own like this its a fairly simple routine experiment, less of an investigation. Any suggestions as to how i could make this more interesting or how it could be developed? How could i measure capacitance, as with a multimeter is pretty boring and wouldn't earn many marks. I am also considering investigating fluid flow rates, using constant head apparatus of some sort (not sure if any is available though!) and allowing the fluid to drain out through capillary tubes or different sized pipes. Any suggestions how this could be carried out or developed? Any other general ideas for an a-level physics coursework investigation? Thanks for any help more

Voting Question: Bernoulli's Equation Counter-intuitive Thought?

I am having a hard time qualitatively understanding how an increase in velocity of a fluid flowing will decrease the pressure on the surrounding container? How is this relationship described in Bernoulli's equation and what is the conceptual perspective of it? It almost seems like if you increase the velocity of the fluid flow you should also be increasing the pressure. more

Resolved Question: how many of you atheist read scientific facts in Quran?

Just few of the facts to share with you....... "And we have made the earth egg shaped".-[Al-Qur’an 79:30] Science discovered that the universe was in the state of ‘gas’. Allah says in Holy Qur’an, Surah Fussilat, Ch. No. 41, verse 11, ‘Moreover, in His design He comprehended the sky, and it had been smoke. And He said to it and the earth, come ye together willingly or unwillingly, and they said we come together in willing obedience. Science discovered that the moon has reflected light of sun. Allah says in Holy Qur'an, Surah Yunus, Ch. No. 10, Verse No. 5 ‘It is Allah who has created the Sun as a shining glory and the Moon having a reflection of light’. Allah says in Holy Qur’an, Surah Furqan, Ch. No. 25, Verse No. 61 ‘Blessed is He who has created the constellations in the sky, and placed therein a lamp, and Moon having borrowed light’. Science discovered that every planet, in solar system, is revolving around the sun and also rotating about its own axis. Allah says in Holy Qur'an, Surah Al-Anbiya, Ch. No. 21, Verse No. 33. ‘It is Allah who has created the night and the day, the Sun and the Moon, each one travelling in a orbit, with its own motion’. The Science discovered that the universe is expanding. Allah says in Holy Qur'an in Surah Dhariat, Ch. No. 51, Verse No. 47 ‘It is We who have constructed with power and skill, the firmaments - and It is We who make the vastness, and the expanding universe’. Science (Oceanology) discovered the fact that there is barrier between the sweet and bitter water and which does not allow them to mix. Allah says in Qur’an, Surah Furqan, Ch. No. 25, Verse No 53, ‘It is Allah who has let free two bodies of flowing water one sweet and palpable and the other salt and bitter, and between them there is a ‘Barzakh’, a barrier, which is forbidden to be trespassed’. Allah says in Holy Qur'an, in Surah Rahman, Ch. No. 55, Verse No. 19 and 20, ‘It is Allah who has let free two bodies of flowing water which meet and between them there is a barrier which is forbidden to be trespassed’. Allah says in Qur'an in Surah Insaan, Ch. No. 76, Verse No. 2 ‘We have created the human being from a minute quantity of mingled fluids’ (zygote). Allah says in Qur’an in Surah Najm, Ch. No. 53, Verse No. 45 and 46, ‘We have created the human beings and made them into male and female through minute quantity of liquid which is ejaculated’. Dr. Moore is not the only scientist to have discussed the Qur'anic verses we will look at in this article. But the fact that he is not a Muslim puts what he has to say in a different light. No one can accuse him of inventing things to defend Islam. His findings will have to be taken seriously by any seeker of truth. In what follows we shall draw from his article entitled "Highlights of Human Embryology in the Koran and the Hadith" which was presented at the Seventh Saudi Medical Meeting at King Faisal University on May 3-6, 1982. At the time, Dr. Moore was Professor of Anatomy and Chairman of the Department, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto Dr. Keith Moore of the University of Toronto was amazed to find that many modern discoveries in the field of embryology must have been known to the author of the Qur'an, for these facts are either hinted at or stated explicitly in the Qur'an. This is particularly significant because the Qur'an claims to be the verbatim word of God. How could these facts have been known to any human being living in the 7th century? The presence of these in the Qur'an is proof enough that the Qur'an did not come from the mind of any human but must have been revealed from God whose knowledge is perfect and who therefore, knew what scientists will discover in the 20th century He created you (all) from a single person: then created, of like nature, his mate; and he sent down for you eight head of cattle in pairs: He makes you, in the wombs of your mothers, in stages, one after another, in three veils of darkness. Holy Qur'an (39:6) Referring to above verse in the Quran, Dr. Moore says: "This verse from the Koran states that God makes you in the wombs of your mothers in stages, one after another, within three veils of darkness." Then he explains his amazement: "The realization that the embryo develops in stages in the uterus was not discussed or illustrated until the 15th century A.D. "The staging of human embryos was not proposed until the 1940's, and the stages used nowadays were not adopted worldwide until a few years ago." It is reasonable to interpret the three veils of darkness mentioned in the Koran as: the mother's abdominal wall; the wall of the uterus; and the amniochorionic membrane composed of the fused amnion and chorion. These three anatomical layers protect the embryo from external injury."well i guess most of the people didn't even bother to read it before answering ithttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL7xxXAu5Wo more

Resolved Question: 2nd Gen. 91 Toyota 4runner 3.0 V-6 emission's failed twice?

One of the Cat's were replaced 2 year's ago and last owner said passed with flying color's. I replaced the actuator for the EGR(small round plastic deal with 3 vacuum lines coming out of the top and bottom), pulled the EGR out carb cleaner-ed it... also mechanic told me to run a quart of transmission fluid through a vacuum line on intake to suck it through the EFI system... the actuator brought down the NOX which is what I am failing from 8 to 6 what ever the unit's are the allowable limit is 4 so the actuator cut it down. After I cleaned the EGR and ran the tranny fluid through the efi system and smoked out the community for a square mile I had the EGR off and put an air hose on a vacuum line fitting on the EGR and it blew the rubber plunger material up and out of position. mechanic said I have to replace now because back-flow will happen after I blew out the neoprene... I am going to go to a pick a part here in PHX and pick up an EGR that looks OK and in good shape so the system will be back to where it was. so it was at 6 now after the tranny fluid to clean out EFI system and new EGR what else can I do to make sure that I pass I'm running out of time and money... Thanks in advance for taking time to read my question and for your time an wisdom. \ I wish I could pick all of the answer's but I will do my best to pick what I feel is the best solution... more

Voting Question: DOCTORS notes and PREGNANCY???

sorry this is a little bit long try and bare with me the clinic thinks im almost 6 weeks pregnant i think im 3-4 weeks pregnant due to irregular periods that are from 22-53 day cycles * went to ER for spotting red and brown on monday at around 11 am the hcg was 436 * ER for update on tuesday to see if its miscarriage 9 am hcg was 558 * Monday : Transvaginal pelvic ultrasound was performed. Positive pregnancy test with spotting. * Endometrium, is somewhat thickened . There is no evidence of intrauterine pregnancy. A small amount of fluid is seen cul-de-sac. <- what the heck does that mean???? * The right ovary contains a simple cyst. Adequate blood flow is seen to the right ovary. No adnexal masses seen on the right. * The left ovary there is a complex heterogeneous cystic mass measuring 12 by 9 by 7mm.(<-what does that mean?) Thre is some increased vascularity to this mass. With a positive pregnancy test, and absence of intrauterine pregnancy, this complex mass in the left could represent ectopic pregnancy. There is a minimal amount of free fluid present. what could all this mean???? i have no pain just periodic cramps like 3 in 24 hours spotting has continued and goes from brown to a little red and stops then starts what could the small amount of fluid seen in the cul-de-sac be ? has anyone been through or knew someone else with similar report ? how did it turn out ? 1 angel in heaven and waiting to see what the next one will be! Resolved Question: Fluid mechanics, Force acting on a pipe contraction?

Im trying to work out a problem where im asked what is the force acting on the contraction as the pipe reduces from a 30cm diameter to a 20cm diameter. Im given flow rate as a value of 0.707m3/s and pressure at section 1 of the pipe is 250kPa. Im 1st asked to calculate the velocity at section 1 and 2 which seems pretty straight forward: Q = AV. Then im asked to calculate pressure at section 2 which im using bernoulli's eqn for. However then it asks me to find the force acting on the contraction, Im also given an additional formula for head loss through the pipe: HL = 0.1*(v2)squared/2g. I would appreciate it if somebody could help me with this. more

Resolved Question: question about bleeding brakes?

I am trying to change the brake fluid on my car. I have read how to do it online, and feel pretty good about doing it. I just have one question about jacking up the car. I wasn't sure if the angle of one tire being jacked up would interfere with the fluid flowing or not. What should I do? more

Resolved Question: Just how effective ARE condoms?

When it comes to sex, most people perform oral (open mouth to bare private parts) unprotected. During intercourse, a woman's vaginal juices still flow down the condom onto a guy's pubic area (including testicles), which is an area without protection. I know as a guy from personal experience that when a girl gets on top and rides me like crazy, the condom can ride up and has the chance of breaking or being pulled off. Not to be too explicit here, but more so for my first two examples, it seems like so many "unprotected" actions and bodily fluid exchanges can occur during activity. Have people thought about this? What is the likelihood of still catching a disease or causing a pregnancy during sex, even if a condom is used?As a bit of a joke, but seriously, people got it all wrong. After unprotected oral, you've swallowed up all the diseases! A condom will be useless at that point if you plan to have intercourse after oral. LOL more

Resolved Question: I don't want to be an engineer but I'm studying it. What should I do?

I'm in the last semester of my very last year of biomedical engineering. I hate it so much. I feel as if my soul has been sucked out of me these last couple of years. Because of this, I have gotten clinically depressed. I hate every aspect of it, from the pretentious students that I'm studying with. There's a hierarchical system here: if you're the best in the class, then you're automatically the most popular. It's absolutely pathetic. Everyone is nice to the smarter people so they can exploit it and "get help" with assignments. Funny thing is that most of the time, the people who study the most don't really know what human skills like compassion, kindness and conversation making skills are. The people who teach us aren't even slightly passionate about what they do. They just drone and drone, and then give you withering looks when you ask questions. I just...hate it so much. I've lost so much these last three years doing my degree but I have so much potential in me. I am clever, I can handle complicated theories easily but you know, when it's about "fluid flow in x or y or z directions" I just don't really care and I don't really want to memorize it. It's just...so mind-numbing! I could either take a Masters degree next year that I'm not particular interested in or take a year off. But...I have so many doubts. My absolute secret burning desire is to do medicine...and it's a career path that I've nurtured inside myself secretly for at least three years. I just don't know whether I can get in or not. I just feel...so hopeless for my future. Please help me. What should I do? more

Resolved Question: why does massage work for so many mental emotional physical problems?

Here are the claims Massage should be done to babies, children and adults and much soothing would take place were this in place without need for drugs, sedatives alcohol or other stimulants. if only this would go into every would be mums repertoire of dealing with their children. The results I am sure would be impressive. Various combinations of oils for massage can be used however I have only experience with using the oils of peanut /olive and almond and I am sure there are many others which are of real benefit too. Also very good results have been obtained using tincture of myrrh. Research in massage therapy has been ongoing for more than 120 years. Here are some reported benefits of massage: Preliminary results suggested cancer patients had less pain and anxiety after receiving therapeutic massage at the James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute in Columbus, Ohio. Women who had experienced the recent death of a child were less depressed after receiving therapeutic massage, according to preliminary results of a study at the University of South Carolina. Medical school students at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School who were massaged before an exam showed a significant decrease in anxiety and respiratory rates as well as a significant increase in white blood cells and natural killer cell activity, suggesting a benefit to the immune system Studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have found massage beneficial in improving weight gain in HIV-exposed infants and facilitating recovery in patients who underwent abdominal surgery. At the University of Miami School of Medicine's Touch Research Institute, researchers have found that massage is helpful in decreasing blood pressure in people with hypertension, alleviating pain in migraine sufferers and improving alertness and performance in office workers. An increasing number of research studies show massage reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion, and increases endorphins (enhancing medical treatment). Although therapeutic massage does not increase muscle strength, it can stimulate weak, inactive muscles and, thus, partially compensate for the lack of exercise and inactivity resulting from illness or injury. It also can hasten and lead to a more complete recovery from exercise or injury. Research has verified that: Office workers massaged regularly were more alert, performed better and were less stressed than those who weren't massaged. Massage therapy decreased the effects of anxiety, tension, depression, pain, and itching in burn patients. Abdominal surgery patients recovered more quickly after massage. Premature infants who were massaged gained more weight and fared better than those who weren't. Autistic children showed less erratic behaviour after massage therapy. According AMTA, massage helps both physically and mentally. " The preterm babies who received massage therapy showed 47% greater weight gain and six-day shorter hospital stays than the infants who were not receiving massage. But is this study evidence of what loving touch can do spiritually, or rather what massage can do on a physiological level? Regardless, babies are not the only benefactors Helps relieve stress and aids relaxation Helps relieve muscle tension and stiffness. Resolved Question: Why is there oil leaking from my valve cover gasket?

I did some research and found this answer from someone else's question. It looks like my bike may be doing the same thing. Is this a problem that can be an easy fix? I am new to all of this. "The valve cover gasket is the problem, as oil leaks from valve cover gasket around spark plug hole, it flows out a hole that was made just for that reason. It comes out just below the header pipe. Its a drain from spark plug hole so fluids wont build up around spark plugs."I forgot to say the the previous owner said he had the gasket replaced no too long ago by a pro. Should i just tighten the bolts down a little? more

Voting Question: Am I worried for nothing?

I went to the doctors today and she told me my fundal height was measuring 25. I'm 26 weeks. She said that's fine. I had an ultrasound a little over a week ago to check for growth, placental blood flow and amniotic fluid levels. Everything was fine. I'm really worried my water broke/is leaking and I don't know it. Or my baby has a kidney problem. I'm concerned because I feel like myfundal height used to be larger than this. Resolved Question: Would it be fair to compare these two things?

To liken prayer to the life-saving flow of the Intravenous fluids given to those who are internally desperate.. Does prayer seem like a life-flow, a power from God to us, His human children? We were dead in our sins and trespasses, weren't we? Did that life-saving cry to God for salvation bring us back to life? I compare the Bible to sight... to NOT have the light of the word, means that we walk in darkness... but even then, we sometimes read the Bible with some sort of agenda... Can we do that with prayer? Thanks fellow believers... ;-) more

Resolved Question: Fluids pre quiz for junior year, please help?

Hello everyone, I have a pre quiz on fluids in order to be prepared in my class next year. 1. A fluid is a substance that can flow, change shape, transmit pressure, and exhibit viscosity, density, and buoyancy. True False 2. In order to calculate the pressure exerted on the surface of a fluid, the mass of the fluid must be divided by the volume of the fluid. True False 3. How does increasing temperature affect the viscosity of a liquid? increases it decreases it has no effect 4.The density of a liquid can be changed by decreasing the temperature increasing the viscosity can’t be changed 5.Which of the following is the best definition of viscosity? the tendency of a fluid to support a floating object the ability of a fluid to transmitted a force the thickness of a fluid, or its resistance to flow 6. According to Bernoulli’s principle, the pressure of a high-speed fluid is higher than the pressure of a low-speed fluid. True False 7. According to Archimedes, the density of all objects is equal to the buoyant force of the object. True False 8. The scientist Archimedes helped determine that buoyant objects sink because the buoyancy force is greater than the gravitational force. True False 9. Pneumatic and hydraulic power systems use the concept of Bernoulli’s principle to power a machine. True False 10. Pascal’s principle states that pressure applied to a fluid is transmitted equally throughout the fluid pressure under a wing is less than pressure over a wing which creates lift an immersed object is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the water it displaces I need answers ASAP. Please answer and I will return the favor :) more

Voting Question: How do I fix my 2003 Ford Taurus windshield washer so the fluid reaches the windshield?

I have had this problem for some time where the windshield washer fluid does not reach the windshield. It just spits out the fluid enough to reach the bottom of the windshield below the wiper. I replaced most of the hose. I have blown compressed air through the lines. Replaced the washer fluid motor with a after market O'reilly auto parts motor. Then I tried replacing the relay and no such luck. I am getting the same amount of flow as what I got with the old pump. I am open to any suggestion or experiences. more

Resolved Question: My 2 year old son jumped out the window of my 2nd floor apartment. X-rays showed no broken bones but...?

But there was a small amount of free flowing fluid in hios stomach. After 24 hours of monitoring bloodcount and behavior they released us and told me just to watch him for changes in behavior or hardening of his stomach. He seems fine except today I noticed a slight limp (which I am gonna take him to the doctor for tomorrow). But tonight I was changing his diaper and feeling his stomach. I also felt his pelvis and noticed that the pelvis is firm to the touch. I've never felt his pelvis before and I am not sure if this is normal or whether I should take him back to ER right now? Resolved Question: What's Wrong With My Car?

I am having an issue with my 94 BMW 530i and was wondering if anyone can be of any assistance. I recently had repairs done to it, I had a faulty heating matrix replaced. As soon as I got it out of the garage, my car began behaving pretty strangely. Smoke began flowing out of the walls of the car, where the seatbelt assembly joins the wall. Next I began noticing smoke coming out from underneath the center console of the car. Then, I began to notice smoke flowing out from underneath the backseat of the car where the batteries were installed. Then the windshield wipers engaged itself and would not turn off. At that point, I decided to go back to the garage that did the initial repairs and sort out the issue with them. As I was pulling out of the parking lot, the windshield washer fluid began to dispense and would not stop. I had long since suspected that the issue was an electrical one. I drove my car, windshield wipers going while fluids dispensing down to the garage which was less than a mile from where I live. The mechanic told me that all of the other mechanics had left for the day and to bring the car back the next business day. To put a bandage on the issue, he pulled the fuse for the windshield wipers and washer to disengage them. I left the garage to go to the barber shop because I had a very important engagement the next day I had to attend and I wanted to look sharp. I knew that driving my car was a fire hazard but hey, I had an important engagement the next day. As I was driving down the road all of a sudden the car alarm sounded. I stopped the car on the side of the road to try and see if I could find the fuse for the alarm and pull it. I could not find the alarm fuse, I couldn't even find the battery (didn't know at that time it was under the seat). I called a friend with ready access to the internet, all the while my car alarm still going. My friend gives me the number to a towing service. I call the towing service. While waiting for the mechanics to arrive, the car alarm eventually died down. The mechanic arrives and he examines the car. We both try to turn over the car to get it to start but somehow it wouldn't happen. Turns out, the fuel pump is malfunctioning. The car is deadlined. What I would like to know is whether or not the electrical issue could have been caused by the repairs done to the heating matrix. Could the electrical issue have caused the fuel pump to malfunction (keeping in mind the fuel pump relays are electrical)? What would be some likely fixes. more

Resolved Question: Valve Cv Flow Coefficient - Same for both Water and Steam?

When manufacturers list the specifications for Cv (GPM per 1 psi @ 60F), is this value only applicable to water applications? I've been trying to find Cv values for steam (lbm/hr per 1 psi) but haven't had any luck. Does the Cv flow coefficient listed apply to both water and steam or should there be separate Cv's for compressible and incompressible fluids? I'm asking because I wanted to see if a smaller globe valve could handle the capacity in a steam system. more

Resolved Question: Could this be a sign of having a DVT (blood clot in leg)?

Okay - in 2004, my Mum had two blood clots; which were in her leg, and hip. She was diagnosed with Factor 5 Leiden (a blood clotting disorder). She almost died. I was 8 at the time - so I didn't really understand it. Before we found out that she had a DVT, she had an ulcer on her leg. It looked horrible - and it stunk! Now - my Mum has a venous leg ulcer. It's a slight cut, but the ulcer makes it look worse. It's black in color and lighter in some areas. I looked up why a leg ulcer would be black, and it said : DVT. I remember my Mum telling me that she had a small amount of circulation flowing in her legs, because the vein had collapsed. Because my Mom's got a Venous leg ulcer and it's black, does it mean that she's got another DVT? I'm petrified. Absolutely, scared. My Mum thought it was a blood clot - because she would feel tension in her leg and cramps. I was really scared and started to do more house work, to help out a little. My Mum started to relax a little more, while I was helping around the house. She said that the pain has lowered down a lot. But she put a band aid over the ulcer, and a sock, and then looked at it, and there was fluid on there...I'm just so scared that I'm going to loose my Mum, I've been in that situation once before, I don't want to go through it again. Also - is there treatment for Venous leg ulcers? Can Doctors prescribe it? Thanks in advance. more
