Welcome to Leadership What Makes A Good Leader Questions and Answers

Open Question: Does Democracy Really Mesh With Today's Traditional Religions?

I mean personally i think that most Traditional Religions were built around someone who was supposedly appointed by God to teach people how to live & act. And that it is God not the people who appoints this person. And they reveal themselves to the people through their words & actions & are eventually followed. And God usually considers most people wicked so a system of leadership based on a majority vote would not be something that meshes with any Traditional idea of how God works. Does anybody else feel like the people who believe that Countries like the US were inspired by Traditional Religious ways of thinking are fooling themselves. I believe the US Government has much more in common with The Democracy of Athens 508 BC to 322 BC & The Republic of Rome 509 BC - 27 BC than it does any Biblical System of Government. I mean aren't guys like Socrates & Plato who were oponents of Democracy more in Line with Todays Traditional Religious Figures. And doesn't the mass of people who chose Barabas over Jesus & wanted Jesus crucified, show a better view of Democracy than the people who claim that there is no rift between a Democratic System of Government & the Way God is Portrayed in Todays Traditional Religions. Doesn't a Democracy mean the majority knows best? And it is best for the majority to lead or to choose a leader. When basicly all of Today's Traditional Religions when you really read say that the majority does not know best. And if you do agree, how is it that those who follow Traditional Religions & Read the Scriptures of these Religions don't seem to see the contradiction or paradox. I can understand the arguement that the World has moved away from Traditional Religion & this is what has resulted. That arguement makes sense. But the arguement that says that Democracy is built on Biblical Teachings or that wants to put a Traditional Religion behind one of our Current Systems of Government. I mean those just really don't seem to go together to me. And never have.Ollicopter: True. I never said the U.S. was a pure Democracy. But it still has more in common with The Athenian Democracy & The Roman Republic than it does with any System of Government that was supported by Today's Traditional Religions in my opinion.Ollicopter: Actually it's a Federal Republic. And has been more Federal ever since the End of the Civil War in my opinion. more

Open Question: Do you think this is unfair?

I go to a Catholic co-ed school in Australia and we're about three quarters through the school year here (in Australia our school years go from late January-early February till late November to mid December). I'm in year 11 and we're due soon to take over the school leadership roles. We have four school houses for sports days and each house needs at least two captains since we'll be in year 12 and leaders of the school. We also have the pillars faith and service (all about the religious side of things), academic, cultural and something else which I've forgotten about. Not a huge amount of people have signed up for this and pretty much no-one has signed up for team captains (mostly about 25-30 out of 65 have signed up for a pillar a role or school head boy and girl so to speak). My school's really into how they look to others and things like that, they're really superficial and shallow so having all these house leaders etc makes them look good. Anyway the school RE (religious education which we HAVE to take all the way through) called the whole year level up to the biology lab and showed us this ten minute corny video on leadership. He then went to saying how leading the school was our responsibility and how we should have the confidence to lead the college and blah blah blah. It's not about confidence it's about making an educated decision about whether it's in our best interests. He said that we don't have to and we won't be forced but then he walks back to the front and starts yelling at us about leading the school because we have to and it's our job and we have no choice in the matter. He then threatened to make us stand in front of the whole school and explain why we don't want to lead, they're acting like this is the apocalypse. I felt like asking if he wanted to stand in front of the school and explain how we thought using temper and threats in order to get what he wants is right. But I kept my mouth shut because it just would've been too difficult because of getting yelled at, sent out, time outs etc. I grabbed some sign up sheets to sign up for one of the roles only I'm not sure I want to anymore because I don't want to be working for that when I was basically forced I want do my best and I don't want to work with people who use anger and threats in order to get what they want. It's not something I want to condone or stand for. But the main reason I don't to do it because we take the roles officially next year in year 12. Australian education is run state based so each state has slightly different requirements to graduate since I don't know which state I want to go to university I may have to do an extra subject because some other states stipulate it. My school also makes us take RE for one semester and there's the research project so I may be doing 6 full year subjects when I should be doing 4 and a half. The workload is massive and I have family commitments and flute also my schooling, flute and family come first over any leadership role. I have four options for what to study and each have TER scores of 60 and 80.8 (TER means year 12 marks) so I need to buckle down next year. Do you think what they're doing is fair and should I take the role? more

Resolved Question: What makes Kobe better than LeBron, rings only?

First off, I'm asking this as neither a Kobe or LeBron fan. Ok, every time I hear the argument backing Kobe it's "He has more rings". Occasionally you here "He's more clutch" or "He's a better leader". I really don't get one thing. Despite the fact that LeBron has always had more points, assists, rebounds, steals and FG% (all 5 of the main stats) averages than Kobe, he isn't considered the better of the two by the majority. Does being the better player mean winning more championships? Is that the best way to determine it? Like in the case of Tim Duncan and Karl Malone. Despite the fact Malone is statistically better than Duncan, Tim is usually considered better because of his rings. With all this said, leadership is apparently better than any statistics. Who do personally think is better, and why? And remember, I'm saying this as neither a Kobe or LeBron fan. BQ1: (Despite the fact they played in different era's) Is Magic Johnson better than LeBron too? BQ2: LOL, by now you would think LeBron's name would be recognized by the spell checker. BQ3: Who's ready for some football!? ★ If you agree with anything@ A Real Class Act, "So Kobe is better because he has fundamentals to his game he doesnt rely on athleticism he relies on skills. LeBron has no fundamentals to his game at all and he relies on athleticism alone." How can you even argue that athleticism (as a pro athlete) isn't part of skill? Maybe you've forgotten, but Kobe was primarily known for his athleticism alone when he first entered the league. And please explain your definition of fundamentals because mine is obviously different. "Kobe has a great work ethic and LeBron's is questionable." You don't win the MVP award back to back seasons by being lazy. It's the product of a great work ethiic and amazing ball play. "Stats dont matter that much skills do and Kobe has the better basketball skillset." Aren't great stats a product of an amazing skillset? LeBron averages 7 ast, 7 rebs, and 28 points for his career and this doesn't seem like a product of an amazing skillset to you?"Magic Johnson is the greatest of all time. LeBron doesnt even come close to him." LeBron, at least, comes close to Magic if not better."Wow you did not seriously say that Magic is better than LeBron. Sorry it aint even close man." I think Magic is better, but I don't think Lebron is out of the question completely. Magic isn't even the greatest of all time. "LeBron is a great athlete, not a great basketball players." Really? LeBron isn't a great basketball player? LeBron has a decent jump shot and is improving from beyond the arc. You can't base being a great basketball player upon shooting fundamentals. Players have different styles of scoring. LeBron greates scoring ability is getting to the hoop and finishing. How in anyway does this make him less of great player? Why haven't you mentioned anything about LeBron's playmaking abilities? Does this make him any less of a great player too? "Defense is yet another aspect and LeBron is not a good man to man defender Kobe is." Kobe is better defensively at causing players to miss shots, LeBron is better at poking the ball away and blocking.I'm not sure either LeBron or Kobe deserved 1st Team NBA Defensive though over players like Artest and Wade. But ey, that's just part of the bias against the 2 best players in the league. "All LeBron can do is chasedown blocks." Like I said, LeBron is a better shot blocker and stealer (I guess you could call it). Will Kobe at contesting shots and causing low FG%'s. "Now those stats you pulled out must have been regular season stats. Padding your stats in the regular season doesnt mean much and lets add to the fact that LeBron plays in garbage time. Looking good on paper doesnt make a difference." LeBron playes even better ball in the post season averaging 8.4 rebs, 7.3 asts, and 29.3 points. The problem with LeBron is he's never been on a team which comes through. The Cavs essentially gave up in the final game of the Celtics-Cavs playoffs series this year. it was pathetic. The Lakers never quit, even when they were down they fought back and won. Now that's a champ team.I really wouldn't consider the times we're in "garbage times". The NBA has so many powerhouses now, way more than the 80's were there were just a few powerhouses like the Pistons, Lakers, Celtics, Houston (maybe), Sixers and maybe a few more. "Rings and stats dont make a difference to me but individual skills do and Kobe is the more skilled player." That's a good way to look at it. Instead of basing your judgment upon rings or stats, skill reigns supreme. " Personally i dont think either player is the best in the league right now." Who do you think is best? Dwayne Wade, Kevin Durant, Brandon Roy? "And LeBron disappears when the game is on the line, yet another thing Kobe can do better than LeBron. In the last 2 minutes of a game i would trust Kobe over LeBron." Just about everyone would. Kobe is the much better clutch player.@♥I'M ME♥ "You have to be a kid still in school to even say this kind nonsense." Well, I wouldn't consider myself just a kid in school. I'm a 17 year old senior with a life plan. I asked a good question with facts requesting your opinion on the matter. I really don't see what makes it nonsense seeing as I'm asking for you're opinion on the matter rather than stating who I think is better. If not for the fact I didn't say who is better, I would say it's because you're disagreeing with me. But, because I did, I don't really understand you're reasoning. Just no, you're the one who seems like a kid saying nonsense "You obviously never seen him play." Being born in 1993, no, I didn't have the opportunity to see Magic, Bird and Thomas play at they're prime. But being a big NBA fan, I've watched numerous old clips and games of these great stars. more

Resolved Question: Am I alone in wondering if Barack Obama is the president of all of America?

I did not vote for Barack Obama but the people voted for him as my president. I am able to accept that someone is in the White House that has differing views. The problem I have is that he constantly blasts Republicans and calls them obstructionists. I understand his frustration that he has a vision for America and that there are many who have a different vision. I can understand that when a piece of legislation is going through congress that is important to him is stalled or fails, he can be discouraged because I think he wants what is best for America. Now, I disagree that what he wants is indeed best for America but I can be respectful about it. When Barack Obama claims that he inherited the country in its current state I just think that this is America. We are under new leadership but we are as we have always been. Any issue or problem that America carries isn't the issue of the president but the issue or problem of America. So, he didn't inherit these problems because they aren't his problems. They are America's problems and it is his job to make things better while following the law. My question is, is anyone else discouraged when the president "blasts" republicans or opponents of his policies? I understand that my views, values, and beliefs differ from his but I still expect him to honor those differences of opinion and to be my president. He can definitely be my president and leader and express his frustration over legislation that doesn't have enough support but he shouldn't go out of his way to name-call and alienate over half the country. He's not the president of the democrats but the president of the United States and all ideologies that make up this country.Emily: I am not condoning any Republican behavior. Joe Wilson (the congressman who shouted, "You lie!" Is not Obama's leader. The point is that Obama is my leader and I don't think he should call me names for having differing opinions. I don't care if every other president has done this, either. The point is that it is wrong and they should lead the whole nation and not just those who agree with them. more

Resolved Question: NROTC ESSAY please be critcal?

Samantha’s NROTC Essay Samantha’s NROTC Essay “The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination and ability to work together as a team.” All my life I have wanted to be the person who is a positive influence on people. I want to be the person that others look up to. I come from a hardworking family who believes in teaching their children respect, discipline, and earning what you deserve. I was taught to take responsibility for everything I do and figure out what I need to do in order to accomplish it. My goals in wanting to become a naval officer are to serve my country, be a positive influence, and build a career. I want to serve my country because it has given me all the opportunities I have been fortunate to have. America is the greatest country to live in because it stands for democracy, human achievement, and freedom. That freedom is why millions of soldiers are serving. An estimated 54,000 are women serving in the Navy and only a little over 8000 are female officers. I would be honored to be apart of that statistic. I come from a long background of family members who have served in the Navy. My Grandfather was a 1st class B.T. and later on went back to school to become a 2nd class diver. My Aunt Christine was a 2nd class A.G., and my cousin Alex was a 2nd class F.C., a technician for tomahawk cruise missiles. My brother served in the Armed Forces. They have told me first hand the amount of pride they feel serving their country. With my family relations and honor in serving in the Navy combined with my passion for higher learning, applying to be a naval officer is the obvious and right path I want to be on. Raised as a catholic, I lead a life full of morals and gratitude towards God. I believe God leads one to where they need to be, but it is up to that person to decide how they are going to overcome obstacles and become the leader people need. Being a team member on Joliet Junior College’s softball team and being captain of the Lincoln-Way Rugby team has taught me commitment, self discipline and duty to my team. The physically demanding effort was expected from every player. It taught one to be strong and completely non selfish. I have to be mindful of my teammates and responsible for the actions I take. I understand when punishment is necessary and awards are deserved. The saying “There is no I in team” really embellishes the idea behind striving towards a beneficiary goal that takes contribution from every player. To lead a life of posterity you have to learn how to work with others and show leadership, which is only some of the empowering qualities in a naval officer. I can prove myself worthy of that title. Navy officers are excellent demonstrations of success. They demonstrate the importance of hard work, pride, and intelligence. Being a naval officer would make me want to be nothing but positive for others and prove to people that with enough heart and desire, you can rise above prejudice and people telling you to settle with what you have. Serving your country is not an option to me, it is necessary. I have demonstrated serving my country during my life by donating clothes to a local thrift, being a donor, or tutoring at my school. These small acts of positive influence lead me to find greater ways to serve my country and the best answer to that is being accepted and becoming a naval officer. Building a career as a naval officer is high on my list and something I dream about. After learning about the endless amounts of benefits you receive, none of those compare to the amount of satisfaction and honor you feel towards you country and helping to better serve it. My intentions in writing this essay are to demonstrate the proper actions necessary to start the rest of my life. I love learning and have taken many courses at the Joliet Junior College, specifically in the science field. My passion in learning and helping people made choosing a career in medicine another obvious choice, and being a Navy health care officer a more refined choice. Unfortunately there are many people in this world that are good with words and know how to say what you want to hear, but real people take those words and put them into actions. They prove that they really want to strive to be a better, more positive person, and become the officer that the Navy needs. They become efficient, committed and loyal to the country that has given not just them but every one of their citizens a chance to grow. Everything I have stated in this essay comes from the heart, because in my heart this is what I want. more

Resolved Question: What is the thesis statement in this?

"Any roll-call of America's heroes invites one last question. Whom do Americans most admire? What are the signs by which they may be known? No doubt they stand for qualities that seem precious for the group good. Yet scores of worthies, men of high intellect and character, have missed the magic ranks of those- in uniform and buckskin, on horseback or trudging afoot or spanning the sky, at statesman's desk or inventor's work-bench- whom Everyman takes as his heroes." (476) "Certain professions have yielded few national idols. The artist, admired so keenly by another business civilization, the Renaissance, has not met with much popular honor in America... No American writer has received such homage as did Voltaire in Paris in 1778... The scholar as a type has never kindled American imagination... The average american is prone to believe that nobody becomes a teacher who can succeed at any other trade..." (477-79). "The law has trained more American heroes and leaders than has any other profession... But the lawyer qua lawyer, in America as elsewhere, has never been able to match the soldier or explorer as an inevitable hero type." (481) "The sort of man whom Americans admire, trust, and are willing to follow can be sketched with a few lines... At the basic level he must be self-respecting, decent, honorable, with a sense of fair play... He must be firm and self-confident in leadership: Davy Crockett's "Be always sure you're right, then go ahead!"... But a reputation for "genius" is unnecessary and may do the hero harm. An able man must not glory in his cleverness... Vanity or personal arrogance in any form is taboo." (482-83) "The hero of a democracy cannot invite public opinion to go to hell... He must pay tribute to conformity... Fundamentally the hero is required to be chaste, loyal, honest, humble before duty and before God. He is apt to have a dash of Puritan conscience, but the beauty of holiness is no more expected than is a sense of poetry... Hard work, tenacity, enterprise, and firmness in the face of odds are the qualities that Americans most admire, rather than originality or eloquence of tongue and pen." (485) "What is their common denominator? All of them, the people believe, loved America more deeply than any selfish consideration. The hero as made in America is a man who has the power and yet does not abuse it... A Chief Executive may then be called to office who rules as a minor Augustus over a gilded age, or serves as the genial host at a great barbecue." (487) "Our heroes, we believe, are cast in a different mould. Their ruling passion, as we see it, is a sense of duty, alert to the best among the stirring impulses of their time, and able to make that impulse effective. They translate the dream into act. The supreme leader is he who can hitch the great bandwagon to the star of American idealism." (487) I really think it's the fourth sentence that starts with "No doubt" because isn't that what he's trying to prove? Help, please. more

Resolved Question: How can I make a community service project around my interests? Ideas included - you don't have to read it all?

*****READ THIS FIRST ***I thank everyone in advance for reading all of this!! Please do not turn away from this just because it is lengthy; I wrote this much in the beginning to explain what I need to do for my project just to help some of you out. And you do not have to read it all. But thank you!!!*** *****(YOU DO NOT HAVE TO READ THIS)***** I have to come up with an idea for my Girl Scout Gold Award by next friday. And what the Gold Award is - it's a huuuuge community service project consisting of at least 30 hours of performing leadership qualities, at least 40 hours of career exploration, and (I think) at least 60 hours of the actual project itself. (It also consists of other things like completing a "journey" and such, but I don't need help with that cause I finished it all.) The project has to fulfill a need in the community, create change in the community, and be ongoing. The ongoing portion could be passing on the community service to another person or group for years to come, or it could be something like making a garden for people to take care of in the future. I already did the leadership and career hours, and now I am up to the actual project, which I have to start planning. I am not very good at all the details and the timeline, but I know I want to do something relating to one or some of my interests, which I guess is a good place to start to get ideas. *****READ HERE***** Here are some of my interests: (I included a rough idea that one of you may branch off of. Just because I have it down doesn't mean it is "Gold Award good" or anything, it is just something that can be used to start from. Or you can give me a totally different idea.) Baking - I could do something like teach homeless children how to bake and we could do something to show off their work. Interior decorating/outdoor area decorating - Not sure what I could do, maybe paint a room and raise money to re-furnish the room at a community shelter for teens/homeless families/etc. Or paint a deck or plant flowers and bushes to make an appealing outdoor area at a community shelter. Music - Maybe do something to save a school's music program. Or it could be a simple fund raiser to add to my whole project, like having a benefit concert. Photography - Like the baking one, I could teach little kids how to use cameras and take nice photos, maybe at a less-fortunate school instead, and then i could have a fund raiser to purchase their school digital cameras for the kids to sign out. Alzheimer's awareness - My grandfather died of Alzheimer's a little over a year ago and I'd like to raise awareness about the disease. I have heard many terrible remarks about the disease and it saddens me to hear that. I could probably arrange an assembly at my school or just a class anyone can come to to learn about Alzheimer's and how serious it is. I guess I could also add something like how to react to someone with Alzheimer's or how to react to someone saying something bad about the disease. Just something to educate people, mainly. Clothes/shoes - I was thinking about raising money to buy new shoes for a less fortunate hospital's cancer center for the patients who have long or frequent stays and don't have nice comfortable shoes. I could also raise awareness about diseases people can get from being barefoot. Steering away from shoes, I could do something to get supplies for teen moms who just had their babies and cannot buy all the clothes, diapers, etc. Do something to try and prevent more teen pregnancies. Please answer!!! You don't have to go along with the ideas I gave, you could give me something totally different. These are just things I could start with, like I said before, and none of it has been approved by a Girl Scout leader yet, mainly because none of it is final!!!! I really need help. Best answer goes to whoever gives me the best ideas or if I decide I want to use your idea. I just need help improving my ideas I came up with already. Do not criticize my ideas please, just answer! Thank you more

Resolved Question: Homework Help... American Heroes Questions?

I really need help with this and it counts for a pretty big grade for school. Nobody has to tell me the full answer but they can at least help me through it. Anything would be very helpful. Read this excerpt from Dixon Wecter's "The Hero in America" and answer the following questions. Link to excerpt: http://xroads.virginia.edu/~ug03/radio/a… 1. What claim does the text address? (Claim: A statement that focuses on an issue within a broad topic. It is a general belief or assertion about this issue and is expressed without support, warrant, and proof of its validity. For example, within baseball, "Good pitching is essential for winning the pennant".) 2. What point-of-view does the author adopt about this claim? 3. What is the author's thesis? 4. Give two examples of evidence from the text. 5. At whom is the article/excerpt directed? 6. What conclusion does the author establish? 7. Is the argument convincing? Why or why not? 8. Resolved Question: What are your thoughts on this?

Lee Iacocca Says: 'Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage with this so called president? We should be screaming bloody murder! We've got a gang of tax cheating clueless leftists trying to steer our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even run a ridiculous cash-for-clunkers program without losing $26 billion of the taxpayers' money, much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, 'trust me the economy is getting better..' Better? You've got to be kidding. This is America , not the damned, 'Titanic'. I'll give you a sound bite: 'Throw all the Democrats out along with Obama!' You might think I'm getting senile, that I've gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore.. The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs.. While we're fiddling in Afghanistan , Iran is completing their nuclear bombs and missiles and nobody seems to know what to do. And the liberal press is waving 'pom-poms' instead of asking hard questions. That's not the promise of the ' America ' my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for. I've had enough. How about you? I'll go a step further. You can't call yourself a patriot if you're not outraged. This is a fight I'm ready and willing to have. The Biggest 'C' is Crisis! (Iacocca elaborates on nine C's of leadership, with crisis being the first.) Leaders are made, not born. Leadership is forged in times of crisis. It's easy to sit there with thumb up your butt and talk theory. Or send someone else's kids off to war when you've never seen a battlefield yourself. It's another thing to lead when your world comes tumbling down. On September 11, 2001, we needed a strong leader more than any other time in our history. We needed a steady hand to guide us out of the ashes. A hell of a mess, so here's where we stand. We're immersed in a bloody war now with no plan for winning and no plan for leaving. But our soldiers are dying daily. We're running the biggest deficit in the history of the world, and it's getting worse every day! We've lost the manufacturing edge to Asia , while our once-great companies are getting slaughtered by health care costs. Gas prices are going to skyrock again, and nobody in power has a lucid plan to open drilling to solve the problem. This country has the largest oil reserves in the WORLD, and we cannot drill for it because the politicians have been bought by the flea-hugging environmentalists. Our schools are in a complete disaster because of the teachers union. Our borders are like sieves and they want to give all illegals amnesty and free healthcare. The middle class is being squeezed to death every day. These are times that cry out for leadership. But when you look around, you've got to ask: 'Where have all the leaders gone?' Where are the curious, creative communicators? Where are the people of character, courage, conviction, omnipotence, and common sense? I may be a sucker for alliteration, but I think you get the point.. Name me a leader who has a better idea for homeland security than making us take off our shoes in airports and throw away our shampoo? We've spent billions of dollars building a huge new bureaucracy, and all we know how to do is react to things that have already happened. Everyone's hunkering down, fingers crossed, hoping the government will make it better for them. Now, that's just crazy.. Deal with life. Name me an industry leader who is thinking creatively about how we can restore our competitive edge in manufacturing. Who would have believed that there could ever be a time when 'The Big Three' referred to Japanese car companies? How did this happen, and more important, look what Obama did about it! Name me a government leader who can articulate a plan for paying down the debit, or solving theenergy crisis, or managing the health care problem. The silence is deafening. But these are the crises that are eating away at our country and milking the middle class dry. I have news for the Chicago gangsters in Congress. We didn't elect you to turn this country into a losing European Socialist state. What is everybody so afraid of? That some bonehead on NBC or CNN news will call them a name? Give me a break. Why don't you guys show some spine for a change? Had Enough? Hey, I'm not trying to be the voice of gloom and doom here. I'm trying to light a fire. I'm speaking out because I h more

Resolved Question: Please tell me if you think I have a chance of getting into UPenn! (University of Pennsylvania)?

My school offers over 20 AP classes, so far I've only taken two (the administrators made this stupid rule when I was a freshman, saying we couldn't take APs until we were sophomores :( ) but during the course of my junior and senior years I will take a combined total of 11 more AP classes. My grades: 9th grade - 1st semester, 6 As, 1 B; 2nd semester, 7 As 10th grade - 1st semester, 6 As, 1 B; 2nd semester 6 As, 1 B Currently my GPA is a 3.98 I'm going to start my junior year soon so I don't have the grades yet, but let's say I get straight As this year and my senior year (remember I'm also taking 11 AP classes too) Also I've passed my two AP exams so far with a 3 and 5, and I will definitely strive to get at least a 4 on each of my future AP exams. Extracurriculars National Junior Honors Society (9th grade) National Honors Society (10th grade and onward) 6th grade leaders (we help out the new 6th graders and counsel them, lead them, etc) JV swim team 9th and 10th grades, will be in Varsity for 11th and 12th grades Community service at the library for about 9 months (not sure of the hours but I did it every Saturday) About to start volunteering at an animal shelter for 6 hours a month for 2 years Japanese culture club Social action and awareness club Helping out at my church with our praise group (volunteer work basically) I'm thinking about maybe starting some sort of animal related club, but I'm not sure because I prefer working behind the scenes...I know I need some kind of leadership thing though. I'm going to a leadership camp soon if that matters at all. I don't think it's that well known though, it's like a Christian-affiliated leadership training camp. No they don't turn all the participants into preachers lol. Just general leaders. My highest SAT score so far is 2080 BUT it's not the REAL SAT, I took it at this SAT prep course. they make their own tests and they make them harder so that after finishing the course when people go take the college board SAT, they score about 100 points higher than on the diagnostic from this SAT prep course. I still havent finished the course either so I think I can get my score up to a 2200 (which hopefully equals a 2300 on the real thing). I don't really have any "unique" things to put on my application, though I considered taking a summer program but finances make it hard; currently my 2 siblings are in college and one is trying to go to grad school, but there's a lot of debt because we couldn't get our residency in time for the scholarship deadlines...I was invited to international student ambassador programs too but I couldn't do it because of finances. umm I'm not going to share my essay because it's a little personal but it's along the lines of how moving to the US has really challenged me and my family I want to major in Biology (pre-med?) at UPenn. I wouldn't normally aim for such a prestigious college (I'd go for somewhere more realistic) but I want to be a veterinarian after getting into Cornell's vet school. However there are only 28 vet schools in the US, so competition is fierce, and I'm hoping to up my chances of getting into Cornell Vet school (the top in the country) by going to a very reputable college like UPenn. Btw I know Cornell is also an Ivy League but when I say I'm trying to up my chances of getting into Cornell vet school I mean I'm going to try to go to a school that's ranked higher than Cornell for undergrad. Sorry this is so detailed, guys! Thanks! * 3 days ago Additional Details Oh yeah also I play a number of instruments but not WELL and I'm not good at athletics either my family didn't have the money to get me lessons so I learned what I could through school (middle school) and through volunteering at church (starting 8th grade) I don't think I should mention this though because don't colleges supposedly want "consistency"? oh except im doing swimming all four years of high school, but the instruments thing...I definitely have an interest in music I just didn't quite have the right resources. 3 days ago yes its my unweighted GPA for my 9th and 10th grade years PLUS all the courses I took in middle school that count for high school (ex. foreign language, or Algebra II) and I'm Korean :) more

Me and him have been best friends for 6 years. We know everything about each other. I used to be chubby and under confident, so in a group he was the leader. I have always been the hard headed and determined one. H has een more laid back and accepting. I am striving to be better, hes ine with what he is. Resolved Question: Spiritually speaking, how can I get a good waitressing job?

I'll be 19 soon and returning back to college (I'm in a program where I have guaranteed acceptance to medical school). I've worked for a doctor's office the past couple of years but they gave me less than 75 hours this entire summer (they're not making as much money as they used to). I really want to get into waitressing, especially into some of the nicer restaurants around here, but I know they typically want prior experience to do this. What should I do? Oh, I have many leadership positions on campus if that helps (officer of three clubs, orientation leader). more

Resolved Question: who thinks lebron will take over the heat as the leader/.......I DOO nd heres why?

Let Lebron make his own legacy. Damn why he has to be the next Kobe or Jordan. Lebron will make his legacy the way he wants to be seen. Also, I just have to say this because obviously alot of these people do not foIlow Lebron's career since middle school. I have been watcing B-Ball for years. Once Lebron came along the media is fascinated with him. Lebron out shines everyone in this league when it comes to the media. Having said that, do you honestly think that Lebron as always will not be the center of attention on that team. I think Wade just gave his spot to Lebron. Lebron is a leader since his middle school days, hell he was the team captain on the Olympic team that Wade and Kobe played on. Do you honestly think he will not be the leader of that team. I think Wade keeps commenting because he knows his spot is in jeopardy. Lebon is the bigger franchaise player than Wade, trust that. Also, Wade's team did not do half as good as Lebron's team under his leadership. Why you think everyone wanted Lebron soo much on their team. They know he has a winner mentality and could fill some seats. I think Wade is nervous and needs to keep talking to reassure himself that he made a good decision because trust Lebron will dominate and his leadership skills will avail. Wade is going to see what it is like to work with a high profile player like Lebron. No matter what all lights and cameras will be on Lebron and he will dominate and distribute as usual. I just do not see Lebron as the robin, too much talent, skill, and fame. Lebron has way more endorsements and followers than Wade. Thios is the new heat not the Wade's heat.all of you dont know the nba you prob only watch the players..and to tell me lebron cant go to miami and take over you sound crazy i bet this year he's the leader on the team...remember what he said in the press conference "i dont believe that our games have to change "which means hes still gone put in work... and you guys missing the bigger picture here stop comparing players makes no sense..and bet his jersey is worn by almost everyone at heat games? by the end of the season it wont even be wades team nomore more

Resolved Question: COLLEGE ESSAY HELP!! is this too risky?

There are three questions from which students can choose for their essay (below). Essays should be 250-1,000 words in length. 1. What are the qualities of a good leader? Use examples from your personal experiences to illustrate your particular leadership style. 2. Describe how your Purdue education would support the attainment of your personal and/or professional goals. 3. If you had a second chance — the opportunity to do something over and do it differently — what would you choose to do over and what changes would you make? * I want to do number 3 and argue that every mistake one makes is a learning experience, therefore, i wouldn't do anything differently. Do you think this is too risky a chance to take???? Resolved Question: How do you feel about leadership and your place in society?

From my point of view we all have a place in nature's kingdom with man as the highest tangible authority. Those who find happiness accept their role in whatever occupation and station in life most suits them based on their own personal limitations and advantages while many people simply reject what they truly are and make both themselves and everyone else miserable as they struggle for something higher. Simply put a gazelle is not a lion and they simply do not occupy the same place and role in society. So it is with mankind. Yes I believe in Might is Right. However, you could say say that today the word "Might" has been replaced by "money", "minority status", "gender" or any other societal device clever people use to get ahead. Regarding leadership, I do not feel that anyone besides the leader of a group of people is capable or really has the right to judge that person's actions on the grounds that they simply are, well not superior in the sense that they are not in a leadership role or a role of dominance. You can feel free to think of any past of current world leader when you answer this question. Whatever their policies, if they were simply too extreme the principal of Might is Right would occur and other nations would overthrow them. In short they were destroyed according to how they lived. Now of course it goes without saying that not everyone will agree with what a leader says. When this occurs I feel that we have two options and with these two options we can maintain honor and dignity. 1) Support the leadership to the best of our ability and be a loyal nationalist. 2) Work to overthrow the leader and enforce our policies on the people which in our minds are more beneficial to the community than the ones currently in place. Now in America for example we do not have a dictatorship(officially) so I think you could also consider running for office and achieving a position of influence to be part of option 2. I also feel that when someone is in a position of power and they actually are capable of overthrowing policies with which they disagree then it is their responsibility to do so for the good of society. In short I regard anything other than some form of these two options to be simply complaining which I feel does no good whatsoever for society other than allowing a few people to get their frustrations out. However, without actual action I don't feel that anything will change so I just don't really see the point. These are just a few of my thoughts. Be Well, Alice more

Resolved Question: JWs claim that god withdrew his rulership when man rebelled to demonstrate that man cannot rule himself.?

Witnesses claim that god withdrew his rulership when man rebelled to demonstrate that man cannot rule himself. Every form of government has been tried by man and has proven unable to address all problems, proving that God's leadership is required. How can the claim that god allows man to rule himself be made in light of Romans 13 (quoted below). It would be impossible for god to demonstrate the inadequacies of man's self-rule if he is putting the leaders in their positions! 1 Let every soul be in subjection to the superior authorities, for there is no authority except by God; the existing authorities stand placed in their relative positions by God. 2 Therefore he who opposes the authority has taken a stand against the arrangement of God; those who have taken a stand against it will receive judgment to themselves. 3 For those ruling are an object of fear, not to the good deed, but to the bad. Do you, then, want to have no fear of the authority? Keep doing good, and you will have praise from it; 4 for it is God’s minister to you for your good. But if you are doing what is bad, be in fear: for it is not without purpose that it bears the sword; for it is God’s minister, an avenger to express wrath upon the one practicing what is bad. I'm not making fun...looking for a real answer to this from one of Jehovah's witnesses. In light of Romans 13, how can the claim be made? This is a little like saying: I will prove to you that you are not capable of building a house by letting you attempt it and burning down your progress every night. It doesn't demonstrate anything about your ability to build a house. more

Resolved Question: Military : How to become a Green Beret?

Alright, what I need is information on how to become a Green Beret (a little more detail than the avg. "apply and be dedicated"). PLEASE do not respond if you'd rather discourage me rather than give helpful advice. Information about me: I'm currently 15 years old I excel at everything I put my heart into (not trying to be cocky or conceded, just reassuring the ones who will try to discourage me). I am EXTREMELY dedicated to be part of the Green Berets I have done vigorous research on the different branches of special forces in the military. I believe I am very intelligent (again, not trying to be conceded) I also know for a fact that I will do everything in my power to help me achieve my dream. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I appreciate it if you've taken the time to read the above statements, now; what I need is a bit of advice in what to do NOW (other than maintain top-physique). - Question 1: I've read that you need to pass a "secret" level security clearance, and I'm a bit worried about that since I had a lot of downloaded music on my computer (via limewire)... should I include this information in my form? Or will they even go that far to check? Also, if I DO include this information, will I get into any trouble? - Question 2: How do I prepare for the ASVAB? I would dedicate all of my time to studying this whenever I possibly could to make sure I get a good score if there are practice tests or study books. - Question 3: What jobs should I look for in the army to a): Show my leaders that I'm dedicated to this and b): Get some training for the Green Beret recruitment course - Question 4: My brother told me that I need to start going to gun ranges to get better with a gun (since I would like to be a Weapon Specialist)... is this true? If so, what are the types of things that I could do NOW *remember I'm 15 years old* to make me better at things that the military leadership would notice? That's all for now... more questions will probably arise later. I really appreciate it to anyone who took the time reading this and responding. If you need any more information about myself, let me know and I'd be happy to respond God bless the troopsTo the first guy who asked me to decode the lyrics... At the very least could you tell me why? I might give it a shot if I knew what the reason was. To the proclaimed *soldier*... You'll tell me right now that I can't become a Green Beret? Based off of what information? What exactly have I said about myself that shows me in a negative light in any shape or form? I may have not said "I am god" but I'm sure you don't have the necessary information to make a judgment like that. Also, the Green Berets are its own SF unit... Like the Rangers/Seals/Airborne/Recon/Delta units. People from these other units may have transferred to the Green Berets, but the Green Berets is by no means the "More elite" unit, they are too different to be compared (which you already know, if you're a soldier). Instead of wanting to become a Ranger or Seal, I want to be a Green Beret (for my own reasons). Like I said, I'll do whatever it takes. Now, if you are truly a soldier and have information, please share. To VTEC141: First, let me thank you for the response, as it was extremely helpful and I will definitely buy the book as soon as I can, and I totally understand now what you mean by practicing my shooting at ranges etc. Next, a few questions if you don't mind 1): What exactly is MARSOC? I read that it is a Marine special operations unit... Is it like recon? 2): If you don't mind me asking... How old are you? You didn't mention if you were already in the military or not. 3): If you are in the military, what tips can you give me as far as my physique? What should I work on most, etc. As of right now I've been taking boxing for a year, as well as lifting weights (haven't been swimming at all, which I will definitely work on).To gregster: Cool story, bro. more

Resolved Question: Why was Cristiano Ronaldo made captain of Portugal?

Firstly let me get this out of the way. Yes. I am a CR9-hater. I won't deny it. However, I must say that do not hate on him for or bear any jealousy towards his ability as a footballer for that is no reason to hate on some one. I hate on him because of the content of his character. I feel he is the biggest douchebag in European football. Also, I feel that he likes taking all the credit for his team's good performance which was always the case during his last 3 years at Man Utd. Alright, now that we're over that, I am still confused as to why Carlos Quieroz made him the national team captain? I know they had a relationship from their time at Man U but that's not a good enough rationale. I just came from watching the Spain v Portugal Round of 16 game, and you cannot tell me this guy is a leader. He was totally non existent during the entire game and can only be noted for taking two lame free kicks from miles out which he probably thought he could score. If Queiroz is to be fired for the poor performance, the Portuguese FA should note this as one of the reason. You know, this isn't FIFA where all you need to do is score a couple of goals to "Captain Your Country." In my mind Ricardo Carvalho would have been a better option, as can be seen in the Spain game, he was actively involved in the match showing his leadership qualities at the back. He is also respected in the game. CR9 is not respected in the game because he doesn't show respect to his teammates and his opponents. Don't believe me? You could try ask Gonzalo Higuain - he'll tell you! There was always this talk of Ronaldo "carrying the team" when he was at Man U. Well if he could "carry" Man U to a famous treble, why couldn't he carry Portugal? The truth is that Ronaldo is not a game changer like Lionel Messi, even though Nike, the media and himself have made everybody believe otherwise. He is an impact player - on outstanding one, I don't deny that - that can only shine if there are good players AROUND him who are also performing, like at Man U. If you don't believe me then you just have to go back to the two meetings with Barca from last season. When the Barca team, inevitably, overpowered the Madrid team he was no where to be seen. That's the truth. What makes me hate on him is when the media says it's all him and he doesn't come out to correct them. Other players, like Messi, come out and do. So what do you think about his appointment as captain and his WC performances?@germana could you please stop menstruating and get to stepping off. This question was posed to people who actually understand football. You are just some bimbo who has been brainwashed by the hype machine. Therefore you must hush, woman lol. more

Resolved Question: If my country has no diplomatic ties with Israel, is it still possible to study there?

I am Indonesian, 25 years old, about to finish my bachelor's degree next year and add another year of postgraduate studies in my country after that. If it all works out well, I would like to come study in Israel at age 27 in 2012. Before this, I have studied Advertising and Philosophy in Europe (finished neither); and am currently studying a combo of Performing Arts Communication and Journalism. I am currently unemployed and have not started a "career path"; although I have previously worked as a translator, MC, and multilevel marketer. For some years by now, I've been wanting to study an English language master's program at the Hebrew University; majoring in either "The Bible and the Ancient Near East" or "Community Leadership and Philanthropy Studies." I have recently visited Israel and dropped by the campus, but the admissions office was not open. I am starting correspondence with someone from the admission's office but would also like to hear other people's well-informed opinions on the subjects. I was on a religious pilgrimage led by an Australian tour leader, and accessed Israel on a group visa organized by the tour company in Israel. However, my passport must not be stamped, and the authorities in my country must not know that I have visited Israel, because my country does not recognize the State of Israel and deems it illegal for its citizens to go there. Many Christians do anyway, just like I did, and I've never heard of an Indonesian Christian going to jail because of it. But neither have I ever heard of an Indonesian citizen going to live in Israel and study there. About the possibility of my studies at the Hebrew University, I have four main concerns: 1) The Hebrew University said that it can organize a visa for me, and that I will have papers separate from my passport in order to enter Israel. When I returned from my short visit, I told the immigration officer that I was coming from Istanbul, Turkey, because that's where I transited. How different would the procedure be if I were coming to Israel alone on a student visa, as opposed to as a group for religious pilgrimage? What are the risks of me being caught by Indonesian authorities to be living in Israel, and what can I do to minimize the risks? 2) Are there full scholarships for Hebrew University international students? Which organizations offer them, and what are the terms and conditions? I've heard that Hebrew University has an office in Australia which offers financial aid. I'm neither an Australian PR/citizen nor living there at the moment, but I studied secondary school and graduated from there; do you think it will help if I try applying for scholarship from there? Otherwise, where else can I look for scholarships? 3) How can I obtain a work permit in Israel? I am considering to either work on campus as a research assistant or off campus as a journalist. How much would I be making a month if I worked these jobs alongside my graduate studies? 4) How would studying abroad affect my personal life, for better or for worse? While 27 is a perfectly normal age to have just graduated a bachelor's degree and begin master's in Israel, in Indonesia that is considered very late. A higher priority for me right now should be starting my career; and the options I have found in Jakarta over the past three years have either been corrupt, requiring personal connections, very low paying, or simply unable to satisfy my appetite for intellectual challenge. Would working in Israel while studying a master's degree there give me a boost to later get better jobs or start a good business in Indonesia? Still part of question 4)... I'm currently in a steady relationship with a lawyer in Indonesia, whom I'm fixed to marry sometime after I graduate from my current studies. If I go to Israel, I may have to postpone our marriage by another 2 years. How will this impact our relationship? I'd like to think that it will be OK, because we need time anyway to save up money to buy a house, and I think my experience in Israel will be a good investment for us: my future husband will have a wife who is more mature, more well prepared in running a household, and have the satisfaction of living my youth to the fullest by mastering another trade and jump starting a career (as opposed to always being jealous of his career and never understanding what it's like to satisfy the demands of a profession). He's told me that if I wanted to study a little bit more overseas, he's fine with it, and even looking forward to come visit me on holidays. However, I also worry that pursuing this might create a rift between us and forever change the relationship I had always been looking forward to have with him. If the study goes on, I'd be 29 and he'd be 32 when we get married at earliest... year 2014! Would that be too long? Please help me sort out these que more

Resolved Question: Jehovah's Witnesses; Why the need to?

Why the need to keep reinterpreting prophecy, testing out the technicalities and boundaries of it, "Is there a point to it?" Please read; I want to put forward a theory of "the point of it". Whenever a person whoever they may be gets something wrong and if it is that they are in control of an organization; the natural tendency is to look for ways to cover up and lessen the impact of the mistake, as to throw a spin on the mistake in order make it look like it is not an error at all. The motivational force to do this is for the reason of saving face in front of the constituents who are in this case the believers. It does not look good if the people who run an organization are boldly making predictions based on their assumption and it does not come to fruition. So to make good the error, instead of saying we got it wrong and acknowledging by giving away the idea of the need to try to accurately predict by indication of prophesy; what they have done is modify meaning of the original predictions. I will illustrate this and I will give just a few changes, an incomplete picture: * 1914- the end of gentile times and to coincide with the end did not happen, change to: * 1914- the end of gentile times and to coincide with Jesus presence and the "generation" prophesy comes into effect meaning that the generation that lived at 1914 "would not pass away and not see the signs"; a taken further meaning to say that we could assume a time-line when adding a generation in years onto 1914. did not happen, change to: * 1914- the end of gentile times and to coincide with Jesus presence and the "generation" prophesy comes into effect meaning that the generation that lived at 1914 "would not pass away and not see the signs"; the generation becomes not just one generation but "generation upon generation" to make up a generation. Over stages a date or time-line that had been originally put on when these things would occur has now changed to an indefinite generation. What this means is from what was originally said; instead of just stopping leading people with presumptuousness, they have turned it all around to make out like it was a good thing to go through this process and arrive at conclusion where none is the wiser. It took a long time to come to that conclusion, but in the meantime they tried their hardest to predict it to happen just the way they said it would, and throughout the errors upon errors they tried make it all blend together. In the end where we are at the moment, if you look back and see all of the ties, one thought to the other, it is quite obvious that it is all linked together for the purpose of "making good the error". I can accept errors but what I cannot accept is trying to make good the error as to cover up, as to make out like the error means nothing. That is like the concept of sinning and saying, oh.....that doesn't mean anything, let's keep doing it. Power does funny things with a leadership; leaders get drunk on power and it will cause them to try fool people with words for their own reason. In this case instead of just being upfront and dropping the cause because it was wrong; they did not want to seem as though they made false predictions so they tried there hardest to make the false prediction work somehow, someway, in order to cover the false premise. That false premise is the origination of the idea to add time-frames onto prophesy. That false premise still exists but now it has been watered down to the point that it has no meaning. The real point is that an intricate process has evolved to arrive at the same point as where it started from; "none the wiser". I am an analyst of politics but like the JW's I do not vote, I know the JW beliefs and the Bible very well. I will say the comparison to politics on this particular issue is remarkable similar.Ginosko: that does not answer the question and you know itSunshine: what the heck do you mean by saying thatSunshine: I do not know if you read the full transcript but it gives a reason; defining a covering of errors and in short form explanation of why. I am just saying what do you think of this possibility? I am not asking you to show that other faiths are doing as well. I am just saying it is an error trying to be covered up in a deceptive way.Ginsko: in reference to your edit, see my last comment to sunshine because this is the question.Sunshine: I just worked out what your first sentence means. This you put forward in relations to the signs from the prophesy from Mat 24. I don't know if your aware of it but these signs included things that would occur on the Earth in relation to a world going wrong. Not all of these things would be inspired by God to happen by his hand being involved. For instance the wars, pestilences, famines etc..........; all of these things were to occur by man's mismanagement. To say what you did in your first sentence; I don't know if you realized but it is not the JW position that God causes these things. LOL.........I like that; I am explaining your faith to youGinsko: But the revealing of the fact that errors were made, does not alleviate the fact that the initial error is the one that has been justified, on the basis of continuing errors to rectify the initial error. It is only at the end of the saga that they concede defeat to the initial error; they say in a roundabout way that all it really is.....is a generation. Guess what.....we knew that! LOL........You see the saga continued for a long time and to arrive at this point makes it all worthwhile doesn't it.........as I said you are none the wiser.Ginsko: BTW, we all know the variant senses of the word generation.........well I did not need to read the watchtower to realize the senses it could take on. Look......would the sense of meaning be an issue on the word generation if your leaders did not take on these policies that they did. Would you even put so much emphasis on defining that word if your leaders only just applied the word as in context. Of course the generation that would see all the signs would not expire until all of these things occurs; that is what Jesus said. All the WT has done is complicate something and derived a meaning out of it that was not actually there.Ginsko: that is okay if you wish to personally accept it without trying to acknowledge the possibility of cover-up. I did by best to show you the problems, the formula used for the ongoing need to do it and why; I am just saying it is crafted rather than arrived at by a Godly direction. Nevertheless it is up to you if you want to accept it. Oh yeah; I use a tone of sarcasm only as a tool so people can see the foolish side of things.........no offense intended. There may be some validity in 1914 as a date but heck the significance of an occurrence to a Biblical event is unclear. Maybe it is the end of the Gentile times as you preach but does that necessarily mean that this is connected to the Generation that would see all the signs before they expired; I can't see the perfect connection without doctoring it all up. more

Resolved Question: Would you hire this man as your pastor?

RE: Letter of application for employment Dear Sirs: I understand that a position as pastor is open in your church and I would like to apply for it. I have some qualifications for the work, and this letter is an honest review of my past service in the ministry. I am almost 60 years of age and have been in the ministry for about 25 years. I’ve never lasted very long in any one place, but once I did stay in one church three years. People say my health is not good, but I ignore these kinds of irritants and press on anyway, believing my ill health is actually an advantage to keep my big ego in check. I’m a strong leader and have usually wound up in charge of everything I’ve ever done. I’ll be frank with you, I’m not always popular, and have been expelled from a number of cities where I ministered. But in every case it was because of a trouble-making opposition I seem to get everywhere I go. I just preach the truth and some people get angry when they hear it. You may hear about the time when I confronted the highest leader in my denomination to his face -- in front of an entire church body. But he was clearly in the wrong and he backed down. It is that simple: I was right, and he was wrong. I spoke the truth, as I always do. And my truth won the day. I have seldom been able to work full-time in the ministry, so I have usually had employment outside of my ministry to help support me. In some churches I received no salary at all, and occasionally my job even provided for paying the staff too, though that was not the average situation. Don't the idea though that I worked only with large churches. Most of the churches I've worked with were small, and all of them were able to meet in a house or small hall. I am a good preacher and well-trained in Bible truths though I often preach longer than people think I should—sometimes for several hours. And you might hear that I have even preached all night at times. I have had some success at church planting, though some believe my methods are wrong. What I do is enter a new city and find the local religious gathering. I attend there until I get an opportunity to teach or speak, then I show them how their doctrine is wrong and the doctrine I teach is correct. This usually causes a lot of division, and those who side with me generally split off the original group and with that core group I start a new church. In case you follow up on my references you may discover some questionable events. So I need to give my side on these stories. Yes, it is true that I am guilty of conspiracy to commit murder. But that was before I accepted Christ. And it is true that because of several problems since becoming a Christian, I have been put in jail. But most of these were short stays, though I have just been released from a four-year stint -- two years in Caesarea and the last two here in Rome. But I’ve never given up on my faith—even as a convict. Yes, I have been accused as a trouble-maker but these are false accusations, the real trouble-makers are the Jews who keep following me everywhere I go stirring up trouble against me. Spiritually I have had an incredible journey. Early in my ministry I had "another world" experience—which I do not even talk about. I heard inexpressible things. And you need not worry about a charismatic influence, for I am a hard-liner on that issue, always limiting speaking in tongues to a few at a time, and though I speak with tongues myself more than most everybody else, I never do so in public meetings. I have always worked in a staff ministry, and usually expect a staff as normal. If your church can't pay them, I will figure out a way to have them work directly for me. My staff is generally loyal to me, in fact I demand it. In my first staff relationship, the senior member of the staff quickly recognized that I was more competent than he was, and he stepped down to the associate role so I could assume the leadership of our staff. Later that year the third member of our staff left abruptly walked out, but I thought at that time he was too soft for the ministry anyway. Eventually I lost my associate too when he tried to persuade me to bring that young fellow back on staff. I refused. He left and started another ministry, though we are still friends. I have been used to working with a large staff, but I admit that I've had a lot of staff turnover -- few of them stay very long. That's what multiplication is all about, though isn't it? As to my wife, I do not give any details other than I will be accompanied wherever I go not by her but by a physician, a faithful layman who has been with me for quite a while. He will be moving with me to wherever I go next. There may be other rumors and accusations about me that you hear when following up my references Strong leaders have strong opposition. So, I wish to address these other rumors and reports directly to you as follows: I can get along with chur more

Resolved Question: Is this a good paragraph for one of my papers at school? (Please read!! I know it's long but still!)?

I'm a 13 year old girl in grade seven. I got accepted into Leadership at my school. Leadership is where we get to organize our dances, and fun days and contests and stuff like that. We had to write a paper on what we thought leadership is. This is what I wrote. I need you to critique it, haha. Here it is:: "Leadership is more than management. It is the ability to lead a group of followers, and make them and the organization successful. To be successful, leaders have to have followers. Leadership isn't about being the boss of everybody, it is being cooperative, responsible, and independent. Being able to motivate others to do good things is one of the keys to being a successful leader. A good leader is someone who people want to look up to and be inspired by. They are creative and full of ideas, respectful, which is accepting others ideas, no matter how different they are, and positive. You have to have well-controlled emotions, which means not having temper tantrums when someone does something wrong, and being able to listen and agree to new ideas others may have; they might make the idea better than it already is. Openness builds mutual respect and trust between leaders and followers. It can also supply the team with more ideas. You also have to have dedication; spending as much time or energy needed to accomplish a task. Communication is also a good trait to have in order to being a good leader. This means that you communicate clearly, and get people to understand why an idea is either good or bad. Being able to speak in public is a good habit to develop. If someone isn't comfortable speaking in public, don't judge them. Everyone has their flaws. Giving credit when needed is also the sign of a good leader. If you and a partner worked on a project together, include the other person's name in the credits as well, don't make them feel left out. But most of all, leadership means staying true to yourself, believing in who you are, and guiding those around you, who may need your help." And that is exactly one page, which is what my teacher told us to write. Is it a good one? Could you tell me what I should fix, if there is anything? Thanks a million!! =DHere's the link to my other question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100615175518AAyx9CI more

Resolved Question: Has the Gulf oil leak exposed Obama's lack of leadership ability?

True leaders are born. They have innate abilities that average people do not possess. You can always tell true leaders at time of crisis, they easily take control and give the rest of us confidence, even if they are wrong, that they will eventually do the right things to solve the problems. Getting a leadership position does not automatically make you a leader. It is painful to watch President Obama stumble from one crisis to another, due to no fault of his own, because he has no true leadership abilities. He's a nice, personable man, but not a strong leader that can take charge and be decisive no matter what people think of him. The gulf leak is a world changing event and President Obama can not generate any real leadership emotion to convience those who are suffering and afraid that he has this situation completely under control and that we are safe no matter how bad things look. I don't blame Obama, as many do, because he didn't elect himself to the position of President, but aren't we in serious trouble with a good politician verses a strong leader now? more

Resolved Question: WOMEN- what is it unique about men that u like?

what is unique about men (all men in general) that u like.? i personally like women for numerous reasons. i like the fact that for any woman her first love is the feeling of love itself. we enjoy to see some uncontrollable emotions in women, especially when we are the ones who cause them. i like the frustration they have when we tease them and they dont know how to act around it. i like it when women smile, chuckle, shy, scream, get frightened, cry (not always). it just makes them look more lovely. i like those light slaps, nagging and hair stroking they do to us. i respect those wonderful women who appreciate their men for their strenghts but love them for their weaknesses. i like them for their dedication, commitment, modesty (inspite of being intelligent and beautiful-though a rare combination), politeness, child-love, sensitivity, responsiveness. we ofcourse want them in schools and colleges-they provide crucial motivation for us to perform better-especially when they perform better than us. i like feminine form of leadership. (female leaders who act like men just piss me off) and the last but not the least we all men adore the female body form(in its entriety). ofcourse the above things are only applicable to non-feminist who are unbiased and unprejudiced. (and i love to hate those male haters). and i know there are plenty of such wonderful women who believe in harmonious unison between men and women and who like men the way they are. so what are the things you like about men which are exclusive to men.? more

Voting Question: Good title for a speech about leadership/overcoming obstacles?

Hello everyone, and welcome. I would like to thank you all for being here today to honor our achievements. Everyone you see before you here today has worked hard to get to this day; for to graduate requires not only good grades, but also effort, perseverance, dedication, and most notably, leadership. Leadership is a quality of utmost importance. There are different types of leaders, however. There are those who you notice instantly: they are loud and outgoing, they take charge of group projects & activities, and they join all the clubs. Others are meek and mild-mannered, easily missed but there nonetheless, for sometimes the best leaders are those not noticed. So in some shape or form, there is a leader in everyone, whether you see it or not. Leadership can take on many forms. You can be a leader in school by joining clubs and organizing projects. You can be a leader in life by enlisting in the Marine Corps like our very own Zac & Kevin, who could not be here today. And you can be a leader within yourself by continually upholding yourself to the highest standards. Cultivate this personality trait within yourself, and see how your life will grow and change for the better. Life may get hard at times, but go forth bravely in all you do and don't back down. In the words of Randy Pausch, "The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out; the brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something." So exert your leadership, and constantly strive towards towards your highest goals. Do not simply accept the negative things that may happen, rather, take them in stride and work to change them for the better. Do this, and you will lead your own way into a successful future. You can't just sit back and let the world make decisions for you. You have to know what you want, and go after it. Be an active participant in your life. Don't allow yourself to be blinded by stubbornness or frustration. If you truly open your mind to all possibilities, you will be amazed at the outcome. Our friends and families have helped us get this far, but now it is the time to start our own lives. Don't be afraid to stray from the beaten path and make your own way. Do whats best for yourself, regardless of what others may say or think. You know yourself better than anyone else, and it is better to be at peace with yourself for life so you don't end up regretting what you did or didn't do. Know your heart and what's in it, and follow your instinct in all you do. Our friends and peers are important in our lives, but in the end, it comes down to just you. And if you're at peace with yourself, you are ready for the world. So be a leader in school, be a leader in life, and most importantly, be a leader within yourself; for you will encounter a lot of obstacles in this new world that we are entering and you need to know how to respond. Throughout life, we will continually be faced with these obstacles. How we choose to act is what defines us as a person. These obstacles can be seen as impediments on our path, or simply as stepping stones. If we choose to see these situations as obstacles, we will forever be stuck in a maze, constantly faced with the brick walls that impede our path to success. However, through a simple change of perspective, these situations can be seen as stepping stones, experiences that will teach us how to grow and learn from our mistakes, and go further on the path of higher education. more

Voting Question: will some one please evaluate my paper? its only 3pages?

Just any gramer errors or structure probs. any improvments ect. thanks This is a highschool ORB SA Enders natural skills show his superiors that he could potentially become a commander, but his success gradually exposes the negative aspects of leadership, which shows that being a leader is not always easy. TOPIC The novel Enders Game, written by Orson Scott card demonstrates a key, overlooked moral in life, the negative aspects of becoming a leader. Leadership isn’t as glorious as it may seam, not only are monumental amounts of responsibility placed upon you but also overwhelming amounts of stress are included. Enders natural skills show his superiors that he could potentially become a commander, but his success gradually exposes the negative aspects of leadership, which shows that being a leader is not always easy. INTRODUCTION Enders mind and natural combat skills show his capabilities of potentially becoming the commander of the fleet. First, Ender’s natural ability is discovered when Ender is being harassed by a soldier. Graff says to Anderson, “I thought Ender might call for help… That’s what you valued most about him- that he settles his own problems. When he’s out there surrounded by an enemy fleet there ain’t gonna be nobody to help him if he calls” (Card 37). In this example, Ender is being harassed by a soldier, and instead of Ender calling a guard for help he severely hurts the soldier. This impresses his superiors, because as a commander, he will have no one to help him, and he will have to defend himself. His superior’s are also impressed by his actions, because Ender severely injures his enemy, future enemies will know the consequences of attacking him. Ender’s natural abilities are again exposed when Ender manages to beat a strategic game that was designed to be unbeatable. Graff says to General Levvy, “What matters is that he won the game that couldn’t be won” (Card 66). In this quotation, Ender has beaten a strategic game that no one has ever been able to beat before. The game interacts with the user and exploits the person weaknesses in obstacles and battles presented throughout the game. His superiors are impressed by his strategic mind, and potential as a commander. Because a commander Ender will have to act quickly against new enemies, and discover different ways to beat them. A final example of Enders natural abilities is that he is the leading soldier in the fleet regardless of the fact he is the youngest: “Ender was still first in the standings” (CANT HAVE FACTS) USE INFERANCES/PARAFRAZING (Card 106). The significance of this quotation is that Ender is still the highest ranked solder in the fleet after months of battle and he is the youngest soldier ever recruited, yet he is remarkably the best solder. Enders mind and natural combat skills show his capabilities of potentially becoming the commander of the fleet. Your words tell your character, and your actions speak your capabilities as a person. CLOSEING SENTENCE Enders appointment as the commander of the fleet is prestigious, but Ender soon realizes the negative aspects of being the commander. Ender is naturally better at everything he does than anyone else: Ender to himself, “That’s the problem with winning from the start, thought Ender. You loose friends” (Card 184). This quote shows how being better in status, ranking or skill creates tension between Ender and his peers resulting in less of friends. Ender discovers how leadership is not always positive when Ender must deal with wiping out an entire race of Aliens. Ender says to Mazer, “I didn’t want to kill them all. I didn’t want to kill anybody! I’m not a killer” (Card 297-8). As a commander Ender is forced to make sacrifices, and Ender has to make sacrifices on the journey as a commander. But one of the major sacrifices Ender has to endure is wiping and entire race. Ender has always resented killing, and now Enders job is to organize killing, and that takes its toll on Ender and rips him apart. leadership is not always positive, as commander Ender endours much misery and pain. Ender says to Valentine, “I’ve lived too long with pain. I wouldn’t know who I am without it” (Card 323). In this quote Ender is explaining that along with leadership, comes pain, caused by difficult decisions, loosing friends, rivalry, competition, est. Enders appointment as the commander of the fleet is prestigious, but Ender soon realizes the negative aspects of being the commander. Being commander isn’t easy, as the top man you inherit huge amounts of responsibility, and no ones there to help you. CLOSEING SENTENCE Ender comes to see and experience the drawbacks of being a commander, while he discovers the morals of life that apply to every day life. As commander, Ender learns morals about life, such as when Ender thinks of the relationship between him and his siblings. Ender says to himself, “The trouble with coins is, when one face is up, the other face is down" (Card 2 more

Resolved Question: What are my chances of getting into Columbia University?

I am currently a junior at the rather prestigious Sacred Heart Preparatory in Atherton, CA. My GPA from freshman, sophmore, and junior year average to about 3.85, and have, in my three years at Sacred Heart, taken 3 AP classes and 6 Honors courses. Next year I will be taking four APs. While my grades are not up to par with the average Columbia student, I (hopefully) make up for it in extracurriculars. I have been a Girl Scout for 12 years, having earned both my Bronze and Silver awards, and will earn my Gold Award in early September. I am the leader of the Young Democrats Club, as well as IRIS, our gay-straight alliance. I sing for the campus ministry choir, which sings at the school masses and weekly prayer services, and I was a member of Advance Choir for both freshman and sophomore years (I would still be a member were it not for the program's cancellation). I have a rather full acting resume, beginning at age five to my current age, 15, including credentials such as the San Francisco Shakespeare Company. I was a member of the GATE (Gifted and Talented Enrichment) program every year prior to starting high school. I have qualified every year since sixth grade for the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth program, and was nominated for the National Leadership Summit. For the past four years, I have done a service trip to Peru to build homes and teach children, and have started a charity, raising money to send the impoverished children that I work with to private schools. I am a member of two a capella groups, and have recieved numerous awards for academic achievement, community service, and my commitment to the arts. Also, I studied abroad in Chile for a month and a half, and I am proficient in both Spanish, French, and German, the latter two self taught. I recently earned a 2030 on my SATs and will retake them in the fall. Am I a good fit for Columbia? more

Resolved Question: How to become a good boss/leader.?

I am trying to build up my leadership skills. I was wondering if anyone who is or was a boss or maybe a leader of a certain group. What makes a good leader or boss. How does one get his subordinates to follow his or her objectives/orders. Is it better to be a intense boss like "Get so and so done ASAP or else" or a a laid back boss like "hey jeff, can you get this done when you have some free time". Any tips would be helpful. more

Resolved Question: Do cancers in the Western Zodiac make good leaders?

Okay, so everyone says Leos, Scorpio, and Aquarius are the best. Or mostly everyone, I disagree. For one all three of them are fixed, I find fixed signs have the NEED to be right. They can be stubborn, though I do admire their determination. I don't think Leos make good leaders. They're is a difference from leading and being in charge. When it comes to Leos, they want to be in charge. I dislike how full of themselves, and arrogant a lot of them are. I know a few Leos, who all happen to be very pushy, and loud with there opinions, and unwilling to change them. Which is a good trait, and a bad one. It proves the stand by what they believe in, but they are unwilling to change, even in cases when they ARE wrong. I have never been lead, by the Scorpio or the Aquarius, though the are still both fixed signs and would have some of the flaws I pointed out in the Leo. Which I think can lead to bad leading. I think cardinal signs are the best leaders, since they are good at initiating in action, and willing to change for the better. I myself am a cardinal sign, and I am a Cancer, hence the question. I feel like our leadership goes unnoticed because we are gentle leaders. I lead a tad less gentle than most due to my Leo mother though. Many people get upset when I try to lead, but in truth its my instincts. Its where I am most comfortable in a group. I do not like to be told what to do, especially If I don't agree with what we are doing. Besides this some zodiac signs just make bad leaders. So tell me what you think. Many people list us as followers such as here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100223164943AAFZMxk Because of how dependent we are EMOTIONALLY. Cancers are perfectly capable of functioning on are own.I'm adding more details as we go. As a Cancer I do not lack confidence. We are very confident people, we are also very emotional, and if challenged correctly is very powerful. We aren't confusing we are secretive, keeping almost everything inside so many people are confused when they say the real us. This is just me as a Cancer, I do ask around the table for opinions. I am very confident in my own beliefs. I do find that many if not almost every person misunderstands us.Though I do ask around the table, I do not change plans for one person, but the MAJORITY of the group. more

Resolved Question: Your opinion on this please?

Ok so I'm homeschooled and, in Pennsylvania at least, I have to write a 10 page or 2500 word report on whatever I wish each year of high school to get my diploma. Among other things, of course, but that is the only fact relevant to this question. Every time I try putting the file on the internet it won't work. I don't know why it isn't working and I don't care. I've decided that I'm going to copy and paste it into the question and, because it's too long, it will be a series of eight or nine questions. Each question will have one page of the report. What I would like from you is your opinion on my style, sentence structure, grammar, and things like that. Do I keep you interested? Or am I boring you? I've always hated those informative essays that make me just want to rewrite the thing myself so please let me know if that is the case with this. In short, just tell me what your opinion is of it. Page one: Hitler's Germany; In the Beginning “I will employ my strength for the welfare of the German people, protect the constitution and laws of the German people, conscientiously discharge the duties imposed on me, and conduct my affairs of office impartially and with justice to everyone.” This was the oath taken by Adolf Hitler on the day of his election to chancellor on January 30, 1933. It was taken amidst a throng of jubilant Germans, shouting and saluting their new chancellor. Unfortunately, although it was an extremely impressive scene, his election was an enormous mistake. You see, Hitler was underestimated by much of the non-Nazi German population and politicians at the time of his election. It was assumed by them that, once elected, he would be forever kept in check by vice-chancellor Franz von Papen and the non-Nazi cabinet members, as there were only three Nazi cabinet members at the time of Hitler’s election. Papen was even known to have boasted to a colleague on the subject, saying that “within two months, we will have pushed Hitler so far in the corner that he’ll squeak.”… Papen, obviously, was wrong. Instead of being kept ‘in check’ by Papen and the cabinet, Hitler eventually spun out of control and, at one point in time, had completely transformed the world’s opinion of Germany to one of a mix of hatred and fear. As for the Nazi Germans, Hitler’s followers and believers, Hitler had them so entranced by his hypnotic speeches and comforting leadership, that they had absolutely no problem with his being elected as chancellor of Germany… for better or for worse, Hitler was now one of their leaders, and lead he would. One of the first things done by Hitler and his Nazi followers was the obtainment of emergency powers. These powers were given to Hitler solely because of the burning of the Reichstag building. The Reichstag building was burnt down on February 27, 1933 by a manA little more than that, please. What exactly is boring you? How can I improve? What makes you want to just give such an uninformative answer and move on? more

Resolved Question: Do you think my introduction to my essay is good? Should I use the semicolon?

here's my intro : Throughout life we are bombarded with what seems like an endless amount of morals, ideas, and social norms. More importantly, how we internalize these social suggestions is what truly makes us who we are. In life, some fail to make a voice of their own, and succumb to the growing mask of social neutrality. Others strive, and learn how to break the glass wall separating man from the truth of his inner desires; these people are called leaders. However, if more than one leader is forced to live in the same environment, problems can arise. Three types of leadership found in Lord of the Flies are dictatorship represented by Jack, democracy represented by Ralph, and monarchy represented by Piggy. I want to know if it's ok to use the semi colon on the following sentence: Others strive, and learn how to break the glass wall separating man from the truth of his inner desires; these people are called leaders. If I can't how else should I rewrite the sentence so it makes sense. Overall, is it a good introduction? more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my prefect application?

Well, I'm applying to become prefect at school and this is what I've wrote, what does everyone think? ---------------------------- There are a number of reasons why i believe i would make a good prefect. Firstly, I believe that I am a strong leader, yet still enjoy working both independently and within a team. As well as this, I enjoy listening to others views and welcome them even if i do not agree at first. I’m also a strong believer in equality and therefore think that everyone pupil should be allowed to contribute ideas regardless of their year group. I have a number of hobbies and interests that vary greatly. Perhaps more than the others, I enjoy a variety of music genres as well as avidly playing the guitar. Another interest of mine is politics, a subject that I would one day like to pursue as a future career. One of my main strengths is my commitment, I will always try most utmost to a project and I am always reluctant to give up. I am also proud of my ability to embrace change and welcome decisions made by others. If I am to be chosen as a prefect, I would hope to offer a variety of assertive skills; these include being a proud representative of the school during out-of-school hours. I would also enjoy the opportunity to be a gateway for pupils to feedback their opinions on how the school is run. The main reason I wish to be considered for a role is so I can gain experience within the field of leadership and helping others. I would also enjoy the opportunity to become a representative and ambassador for our school. more

Voting Question: HS Marching Band Leadership?

HS Marching Band leadership? Okay. So heres the skinny (: I'm a sophomore in HS and im in my schools marching band. next year i want to be appointed as a uniform sergeant. basically all they do is help organize the uniforms and put away / hand out uniforms before and after each performance. But to be appointed, i have to write an essay answering the following questions. what are the qualities of a good leader? a good leader can recognize risks involved with making a decision, and be able to decide well based on those. They should be able to communicate well, and not be afraid to step up to a task when no one else is willing to. Why do you want to be in this position? I like being involved in band, and would like to become even more involved. To step up and take on a responsibility that will help the band. What do you hope to bring to the band? I hope to bring organization the the band. those are my answers, btw. So obviously, i will elaborate on these questions and answers. what i truley need help with though is how to start it. The band directors are very vague in what they want. Literally all i know is that i have to answer those questions and make an essay of it, no longer than 3 pages doubled spaced. Idk what kind of essay or anything. I REALLY REALLY need help in getting a great start for this essay. Any suggestions or tips? thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to help me out. more

Resolved Question: Could you look over my presidential speech?

Hello, and welcome sophomore class. I’d like to thank the school faculty and my fellow students for allowing me to be here today. With that being said, don`t lend me your ears, you will need them to listen to me as I ask for your vote. I am _____________ and I am running for Junior Class President. My purpose for running as class President isn’t because I am or plan to test my level of popularity in the school, but to make a difference. After all, about 70% of us aren’t popular, so let us vote for a change. I believe that I am the best for the position because I am a leader, a team player, and a very hard worker. As quoted by Theodore Roosevelt one should “speak softly and carry a big stick.” Sure I may be on the quiet side, but my actions speak louder than anything. I am a highly ambitious person, and I will never give up on anything, and I will never give up on my classmates. I care about all of you, and you are all special and have unique ideas, and when taken under consideration under my leadership, spectacular things can be achieved. I recognize that junior year is what we’ve been waiting for, but secretly fear. ACT, junior prom, Big changes are coming, and hopefully those fears can be put to rest with some of the ideas I have if elected as student council president. Soon we are going to make hard decisions about college our learning a skill after high school. You need someone who will work with principal authority to have seminars and training to do well on our ACT’s. After all who doesn’t want a better chance of getting into college? I, ______ should be voted class president because I have ideas on how we can fund raise AND have fun next year. Fundraising could reduce the costs of Junior Prom, and finally get new class t shirts. And, not only do I have ideas of my own; I want to hear from you. Communication is key and I want to know want to know, what you want. Of course these ideas are only possible if we act as a team. So let’s make ______________, a triple threat! Vote for ____ because I truly care about you guys. Vote for ____because without me there is no triple threat. Vote for ____ because life is WAY TOO short to have a bad president! Thank-you for your time and have a blessed day. Thanks guys! I will try to town it down a bit, but the person who won last year was a bit dramatic. But at the same time I don't want to seem like I'm a God, and I rule over everyone.Oh and Duke, how do I seem arrogant? I think I have an idea but I just want to know for sure to fix it.Oh wait I see, never mind. I saw the " under my leadership) and changed it to " and when you are taken under consideration, spectacular things can be achieved.Steven do you think I should take out the Roosevelt quote, or just introduce it by saying, " one of my favorite quotes... more

Resolved Question: How do these Letters of Recommendation Sound?

So three of the schools that I am applying to next year are USC, Notre Dame, and Georgetown. My stats are pretty average for them I have like a 3.9 GPA 33 on the ACT some leadership positions in football, track, school newspaper, Student Government, Model UN team, and literary magazine, ect. These are pretty good ecs, but its not like I am a published author or anything. So my question is if I can get some good letters of recommendation will these make me stand out in the eyes of admissions. For USC a very close family friend is a dean of a department in the medical school and for the two catholic schools, an archbishop has offered to write me a recommendation. Now I don't know how much these letters can mean because none of the people know me that well. Would I have to explain in what context I met these people in my application? Also does getting recommendations from a leader of the Catholic church in America look impressive to secular schools? I figure he is a pretty prominent guy. ThanksI mean these as compliments to my teacher and counsler recs that colleges want. So like extra recommendations that some college allow. more
