Open Question: Yale admission question (transfer)?

I was reading Yale's website, and on the section they had regarding transfer applications it was stated that 'special preference will be given to those coming from community colleges or a military background.' From speaking with former students and teachers, Yale typically likes to extend offers to applicants that otherwise would not have been able to attend or come from an nontraditional background. I believe that if I attended a CC (in my case, it would be BMCC in NYC) versus Baruch College, I will be able to sway my admissions essay more favorably as to why studying at Yale would be most paramount. In the past, I have seen two applications from Suffolk Community College get excepted. My stats are below: High School GPA: 3.3 (numerous AP and honors classes), AICE Cambridge program, SAT 1410 (no SAT 2, and I plan on taking the ACT before I apply to Yale). EC: worked 15 hours a week, ran cross-country (team captain) /track and played tennis, junior and senior historian, president of key-club, eagle scout, extensive volunteer work (hospitals, charities, soup-kitchen), played piano (performed for charity ball as well), teacher-aid program, Bright Futures Scholar, yearbook Staff and poetry club. During this summer (I took a year off in between) I went to China to do volunteer work and obtained my real estate license. Also, does it help that I know three former students and a current teacher whole will all write me letters of recommend? I appreciate any comments or concerns. (also, I want to try to transfer as a sophomore first.) As well, I intend of obtaining and maintaining nothing lower than a 3.7 in college and keeping the EC stuff up to par. And my intended major is math.Ah, thank you for shedding light on that. I know that my high school credentials are less than stellar however, and think after reading your post I may stick with Baruch, bust my ass and hope for the best. And you right, I did spell accepted wrong. No excuses, but I was writing this at 5am. :) more

Resolved Question: How much sand do I need?

I am an Eagle Scout and will be building a sand jumping pit for my school's track team. It will be around 20ft x 8 ft x 21in. I think it comes out to about 10 cubic yards of sand. Is this the right amount of sand? And how many 50lb bags of sand is that?I will be doing this FOR my eagle scout rank1) If I was going to figure it out on my own I wouldn't be here. 2) I'm obviously asking to get information from someone experienced in this field. 3) Buy extra? Sand isn't cheap. more

Resolved Question: United States Coast Guard Academy and Flight School Possibility?

Hello Im currently a Sophomore in high school and i've been doing good in my classes and have been taking additional classes throughout the summer. I have done so because my family happens to be a Coast Guard family and happens to be making their final move, untill I join the USCG for myself. To do this I have been researching and discovered the USCG Academy offer's Mechanical Engineering which I plan to take as my major and pass of course to be able to graduate and be one of quite few that is able to attend the Naval Air Station Pensacola which offers flight training for USCG aviators. In the field of aviation I have been leaning towards the more adventurous of careers of course and not simply be behind a desk which my Father seems to do. these things include possibly being the pilot of a helicopter performing a rescue from a sinking ship. I want a career I don't call work but something I enjoy doing. As of this moment in time I have currently received 6.5 but soonly to be recieving 2 credits for working for Island Trails Network here on Kodiak as well as .5 for P.E. so far i will have roughly 18 credits possibly less or more at the end of my Sophomore year. Which means I'll need roughly 3 credits once again possibly less or more but I am guarenteed to have reached 21 credits by the end or even possibly half way through the year. (21 credits total to graduate high school in the state of Alaska) more essentially the core math, english, ETC... classes. My plan is to graduate high school at the end of my junior year when my Father is scheduled to make his last move before retirement. So what i'm trying to do is get ahead of the game in a way,i've researched over the internet and haven't found much yet. first off yes, I know the USCG Academy is really hard to get into but im very well rounded I play football during the school year here in kodiak(football season in kodiak is mostly the summer when schools out). anyway I've also played my guitar for about 5 years now as well. Lastly not by choice i had joined Scouting and i am about to become Star at age 15 about 3 months before 16 giving me enough time to achieve the Eagle scout rank and earn the 3 palms. During the school year i retain good grades of A's and B's. So far what i've researched is that Need to do my best on the SAT or I believe the ACT with a writing test as well as all the other paperwork such as physical ETC... ((((((((((((Question))))))))))) but what i haven't found is how many USCG Aviators are able to attend the attend Naval Air Station Pensacola annualy. As well i'm wondering if i keep on the same direction what chance I have at achieving my goal. As well as any tips or suggestions to help me out. or possibly any other possible roads to look down ( As well i have been considering joining the USAF as of now though not looked into the Airforce branch) Thanks, for taking the time to read and possibly have submitted an answer, tip, or maybe a suggestion if you feel I left somthing just answer and i'll answer by the end of that day. Once again thank's for sticking through to the end of my question. (The Highschool I attend has a schedule of 6 possible credits a year leaving 2 open hours in the Senior year I took 6 classes in the summer and earned 2.5 through work. (work credits are 90 hours for .5 credits as well as the physical labor). JBRichard002 more

Resolved Question: I am wondering what to look at for my next "sporty" car, so far I seem to prefer Nissan 300zx's.?

I am a seventeen year old straight A student male, who is also an Eagle Scout. I am currently driving a 2000 Altima but, I am looking into getting a "sportier car". So far I have looked at newer Prelude's with vtech, rx-7's, and 300zx's. I am hoping to get something without ridiculous insurance though and would like to know what you all think is best both insurance and performance wise. However, no turbo's, those screw your engine over. My budget is porbably under 9 or 10 thousand dollars. more

Resolved Question: Admissions averages at the University of Western Ontario?

Hi, I'm currently a high school senior at a very competetive high school in the United States, and am thinking of applying to college in canada, specifically; The University of Western Ontario and The University of Ottawa. Perspectively i would like to study International Relations, while completing medical school prerequisites. I have noticed in my search that Canada's system of grading is very different than ours here in the states, and I was wondering what my chances of admissions are to these schools, or if i am even in the same tier of prestige. Stats: 3.9 GPA (Many AP Classes) 26 ACT, other credentials of note include, exec. board Stu Council, Amnesty Inter., Eagle Scout. Also, if anyone could note how a canadian undergrad education would play into apllying to American Medical Schools. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Please help!! Do I have a chance at admittance to a military academy?

I am going to be a junior at Avon Old Farms School, a private boarding all boys school, one of the best in the country. Some points about me: -I've been floundering as far as grades, my final GPA for sophomore year was around 3.2-3.3 -I play hockey and baseball. Baseball will be a varsity sport in the next two years, but hockey won't be. I could do wrestling, which is almost a given varsity sport, or swimming, which there is only one team for, varsity swimming. -I'm very involved in music, I'm going to be in the elite singing group here that tours around the world, and I've given many concerts playing the piano, which I play on a collegiate level. -I've been a finalist for my grade in the school-wide poetry recitation contest for the last two years, and I've been a finalist in the poetry recitation contest in the foreign language department for the last two years. I've also won a few essay contests here. -I am involved in the literary club, and the newspaper, and am going to join the school's community service club next year, where I hope to someday be a president. -I am going to become involved in the student politics here. -I am 16, and am a Life scout, and I'm on a sure path to becoming an Eagle Scout. -I was in a world-renowned choir for 7 years as a child, directed by a Grammy Award winning composer, and we toured around the world. -My father went to West Point (1976) and his cousin also went to West Point (sometime in the 60's). A family friend went to USNA. Any advice about what I should do as far as sports? If I get my grades up, will I have a chance at getting into one of the main service academies? (USMA, USNA, USAFA) Thanks for all your help! more

Voting Question: Can anyone give constructive criticism on essay?

(Please do not just only give me grammatical criticism, but tell me if the structure is correct and etc.) Boy scouting is a treasured organization not only in America , but throughout the world. Adopting young boy’s from the tender age of eleven, it exposes them to endless possibilities. It’s roots string from James Robert Baden-Powell in 1907 as he began the movement in Great Britain prior to the Boer War in South Africa, to then have his practices transferred over to America in 1910. The organization has now developed allowing each member to become apart of the scouting experience, while not only gaining useful life skills, but a brotherhood to rely on. All boy scouts must realize that there are fundamental rules that they must oblige by. They consist of a set of laws such as: The scout oath, Law, motto, slogan, and outdoor code. Each one represents how a scout must behave wearing a uniform and even during their life. Remembering them by heart not only stands for what a person should be, but who they are. These rules are the guide lines for a scout and must be treated with such honor. During the course of the boy scout’s experience, scouts must go on several camping trips; allowing themselves to not only be depend ant of the suburban/urban life style which isn’t what this country is about. It’s true identity is filled with vast prairies that stench for miles upon miles of open land, unused by any developers and contractors trying to built strip malls. Instead of large metropolitan communities and small towns, think forest are occupied by forest critters roaming around just as god intended. A scout gets the opportunity to venture off and track through arduous and difficult terrains going on hikes, exhilarating water rafting trips, pioneering, and etc. Depending on the troop though, many of these skill based activities aren’t done. Alternative trips are spent going to boy scout camps where needed fundamental skills are practiced to progress in a scout’s rank. These experiences do not rank up to the full experience to outdoor adventures, but required skills that are needed. Some of them can be done at home, defeating the purpose of the whole experience. Cooking, cleaning, fire making, cutting wood, and pioneering are some of the various activities done on a camping trip. This approach to scouting isn’t as full as venturing out into the wilderness, yet it’s different. While boys join the troop for numerous reasons, others have a clear object. Out of the six ranks, Eagle is the highest rank in the organization. A total of twenty-one merit badges are laid out to prepare a scout with skills needed. Each one represents the knowledge that a scout has earned throughout the course of a scout’s time in the organization. For instance, “Citizenship in the Community” is a badge that has requires critical research skills and the dedication to analyze data about that boy’s community. Their exposure to the these types of badges are not to just be fun, but an opportunity to gain knowledge. In conclusion, scouting exposes a young boy to endless possibilities that are laid out and teaches useful skills. Camping is the greatest part of the scouting experience, yet isn’t the core. Every guide line and skill are useful to the boy’s development. The total twenty-one merit badges are to equip these boys, to hopefully develop them into an Eagle scout-only if they want it. Being a scout and gaining valuable skills is a trait that each member can treasure throughout their life. more

Resolved Question: Am I spoiled? D: Just wondering.?

Hello. I was asking a question about an allowance for a 13 year old girl when many people said that I was a spoiled rotten brat. I am not any of those things. I am in all AP classes, the gifted program, state ranked in swimming, have been taking piano lessons for 8 years, and a girl scout. If I want something, my parents rarely buy it for me unlike many. I have to use my allowance money to pay for it myself. Also, I have to do chores like. *Cleaning the bathroom *Taking the dog outside *Doing the Dishes *Vacuuming *Making the Beds *Making dinner etc. I buy my own clothes. I don't buy my clothes from Juicy Couture, Barney's, or even Nordstrom. I buy stuff from Target, Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale, and American Eagle. With the amount of chores I do, I do not think seventy dollars a week for allowance is unreasonable. I am not a spoiled brat one bit. Oh, did i mention that most of that money goes to charity, church, and savings?Sorry for rantingg. I just didnt like what people had to say. more

What leadership qualities have you learned? 4. What does it mean to be an Eagle Scout? Thank youWhy is it imortant to be an Eagle Scout? more

Currently in college as a sophomore. I am going for a degree in business management and maybe a minor in entrepreneurship. Im having second thoughts about it though. I REALLY like to build and assemble things. I like leadership positions and get along with people well. I have very good communication skills. I am also an Eagle Scout so I have experience all across the board. Construction Management has crossed my mind quite a bit too. I want something that has some outdoor work and short distance traveling, management, building stuff. In other words...no cubicles! more

Voting Question: Long-Term Acne Breakouts?

I'm a 16 year old guy, and if I have incredibly active acne. I normally wash my face using straight up soap and water, and that does a good job at repressing it. However, at the end of the day, even if I've sat around, my face still feels greasy and sweaty. And if I don't shower for a day, I have breakouts that take an unbearably long time to get under control. Unfortunately, I'm an outdoorsy person, and do a lot of camping (working on my Eagle Scout Rank right now), so I"ll go for a long time without showering. And if it helps, it's mostly just a few giant red pimples on my forehead, and cheeks, with some very very very small ones around those. Is there anything I can do, short of showering everyday to keep my breakouts away? more

Resolved Question: Will becoming an emt help with coast guard?

Im 18 years old and have graduated high school already. My dream is to join the coast guard. Within the coast guard i want to be in aviation, specifically AST, i know that its a very tough program with a high attritian rate, but its something i really want. A little history on me; ive been around water my whole life and am very comfortable in it, i lifeguard every summer, and im an eagle scout as well. my recruiter told me that its harder than it once was to join the CG, and that i need to do good on the asvab and even then it'll be a waiting game to get in. During the mean time im taking basic classes at a community college, and i was thinking that second semester i should look into taking some classes to become an emt. Would doing this benifit me as far as getting into the coast guard sooner or as a more "valuable" person to them? more

Resolved Question: Make money in spare time? Help?

This is a very serious question. I live in a small town in Ohio, I am 16 years old, and I play high school football, school starts in 8 days, and I had a job over the summer, and I have 250$. That is going to go towards a lettermans jacket. I have football practice pretty much every day. And I need to make money, I am going to sell my current computer for 1,500$ or maybe a little more, and I want to build a master gaming computer, and for everything it adds up to about 3,000 dollars. I need to find a way to make another 1,500 dollars, but I don't know how I should do it, and yes, I want to earn it as fast as possible, it has been my dream to get this computer. And if you must know, I am not a computer nerd, I weigh about 145 lbs, I have around 7% body far, I wrestle, play football and run track. And I am also a life scout. Almost eagle. I play on my current computer (very crappy computer) when I have spare time. Which is very seldomly. If someone could please help me get this money some how I would greatly appreciate your input. And please don't be smart towards me and say, why don't you just get a job. Well, for one I already have a job, I only work there during the summer, and I have football and scouts I have to deal with. If it is possible to get money online while I'm on, and not stupid surveys that give you like .01 dollars for every survey, and something where you don't have to pay in order to do it or something. I really appreciate you taking the time to read this and help me out, I thank you, and have a wonderful day... more

i am trying to fill in my eagle scout application. typing in info here and there is okay but when it comes to filling out paragraphs, it just keeps getting smaller and smaller on one line. i don't want to have to click for every new line of words i have because its annoying, it takes a lot longer and it comes out messy. is there a way to type in text and not have to worry about this? i have found the type writer tool but this does not seem to work well with the designated typing lines. i have the latest version of reader. just downloaded it today for this. more

Resolved Question: Boy Scouts demanding that you need to believe in a religion?

I honestly think this is the dumbest thing that exists in the boy scouts. If you have freedom of religion then why can't you have the freedom to NOT believe in a religion...? I was brought up with religion in my house but I chose to denounce it. Because of this apparently I am not allowed to get the rank of Eagle Scout. They really need to get with the time period. First they don't let gay people in and now they don't let people without religions in? Is there someone I can protest to or something?so T K A... are you telling me to lie to myself? more

I joined the scouts late, about a month ago, and i only have 16 months left until im 18. I will be second class within a week, but my only worry is that i might not be able to complete until 18. Resolved Question: lots of different questions about the U.S. army rangers and military in general?

A little background....I'm a junior at east carolina university and I'm looking to go into a tactical career immediately after college. I'm an eagle scout. My father is also a master sargeant in the national guard and he is completely apposed to me going into the military. So my questions are as follows: What is the standing payrate for college graduates going straight into the military? How often are special forces soldiers deployed, and for how long? What kind of contract do I need to find or sign in order to get into the sf category? I have more questions but I think I got a lot of them answered. If you would be so kind as to not leave any jackass arrogant answers. I am not that knowledgable of military life, other than what my father tells me, on the account of I'm not in any jrotc or anything. So please no dick answers more

Now I have not submitted a Venture or Boy Scout Adult application yet. I am being told by someone that I need to have that submitted before I can have my Board of Review. Now I am unable to find this out online. I was just wondering if I need to get that done ASAP, or perhaps I can do it later. more
