Resolved Question: Will Wiping my hard drive clean and re-installing Windows 7 fix my issues?

I have been having some problems with windows 7 lately and i want to fix them all in one go. what i have been thinking about doing is transferring all of my files (saved files not windows 7 files) onto an external hard drive and wiping the hard drive clean (windows 7 included) and then re installing a new copy windows 7 and then transferring my files over. My question, is will erasing windows 7 and installing a new copy fix my windows problems? or will it still persist because i am using the same hard drive. a little more information on WHY my windows 7 has gone to hell; At about May of last year I upgraded my PC to a Gaming PC (a very basic one but enough to run every game on mid-low settings comfortably) and i started getting a weird pop up saying "The item you are trying to access is on another network" and i have to click it maybe 5 times (every click it exits and reappears) to make it go away, to be honest i did look up how to get rid of it and it says i have to re-install windows 7 and thats where my idea came from. Then i had an issue with some important windows 7 files that i didn't fix for about 6 months (yeah, that's probably where most of my issues are coming from) and when i did fix it, i was sent to a website (By Microsoft) that said (in bold lettering) id i didn't fix the issue my PC may slow down dramatically and become more susceptible to attacks. Like i said, this went unfixed, and unnoticed, for about 6 months (windows COULDN'T install it itself, i had to fix the issue with some software Microsoft provided on their website. Shows how big an issue it is when MICROSOFT makes a program to fix it). I also started downloading alot of game related stuff from the internet (like mods and F2P games) without scanning them. Now, i don't think i have a virus but i do think it accounts to the slow down of my PC, most stuff on my desktop now is there because im not allowed to delete it because the software wont let me, and i would like to fix it. Sorry for the long message here, i feel that with something like this a LOT of information is needed to understand and help, so back to my original question. Will wiping my PC clean and installing a new Windows 7 fix my problems? Thanks more

Resolved Question: How Can I Disable auto shutdown?

My laptop (HP G56 Notebook PC, running Windows 7, 2GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drive and 2.30 GHz processor) always turns off instantly without warning, but only when I am playing games for about 5 mins, I have been told that it is due to overheating but it isn't very hot at all, and I used to be able to play games for hours and it would get a lot hotter than it does now without turning off at all. Also about a month ago it started to be extremely slow, (to the point where it took over an hour to open up a program) so I sent it back to PC world where I bought it from, they sent it to another part of the country to get it fixed, and they sent it back with a brand new fan installed, it then failed again, so I restored it to factory settings, it worked fine for about a week and then died, I sent it back again, they put a new motherboard in, a new CPU, and cleaned it completely, inside and out. I now have it back and am in this situation, so I was just hoping someone would know how I could fix it, or even tell me something else that could help, Thanks in advance :D more

Resolved Question: How do i factory reset my Acer laptop ?

Alt + F10 on the start up screen dont work for some reason, even though it IS enabled. (i saw some were that it is because i have windows 7 or vista installed on the laptop. The laptop didn't have vista or windows 7 when i bought it, my friend installed it for me.) Also i have no backup discs from when i got the laptop. I have saved all the files that i want onto a memory stick so im not bothered what i loose during the factory reset process. Ive had the laptop for about 2 and a half years but its never failed me until now. The computer loads up and everything its just that i have a ton of files on the laptop that im not bothered about and dont want to sort through deliting things, because of this the laptop has no memory and is running slow. The internet dont work because of a error on the laptop either a virus or something. So basically i just want it wiped clean so i can start again fresh. How can i factory reset the laptop to its Original settings without Alt+F10 at start up screen AND without backup discs ? Resolved Question: How can I fix my dell PC?

I have been having the same problem for a while now so I will simply tell you what the issue is and list out my attempts to fix the problem. Basically when I start my pc it comes up with the boot options I.e safe mode, last known good etc etc I choose last known good config and after about a minute the machine restarts and does the same thing. So I choose safe mode and the system goes through the list obviosly booting up and bam restart. Any option I choose it'll not load past the windows vista loading bar without restarting. I try using a windows disc to recover repair it...the repair runs all night and eventually freezes or loops with no problems found. So I try reformating and the same problem occurs it won't load my installation of windows but it won't let me install either it freezes alltogether. So I think maybe it's hardward but after a full hardware check no error detected. So I have a computer that won't boot from start, repair or reformat and in the computers mind everything is fine just insanely slow. I bought a good quality external DVD-R same problem. I can't do a factory reset that would simple wipe the bastard clean as the option isn't there and I really don't wanna pay a proffesional to do it when It's probably an error I can fix myself. I just don't know how. Please does anyone out there know how to help? PLEASE!? more

Resolved Question: How can i find the product key or serial no of my MS Office 2010 Pro Plus?

Hi I have just received a laptop from my uni with office pro plus 2010 installed. But the windows is 7 Home edition. I am trying to do a clean install of windows 7 ultimate then install office pro plus 2010 again. But given that to install again I have to hand this laptop to Uni's IT team which is the slowest "ever", I want to do it myself. Is it in anyway possible that I can recover the S/N of MS Office Pro Plus that was used to install this software and then install it again? few things: 1) No I can not get upgrade my windows. I want a full clean install as uni have put some software I do not need / want. 2) No Uni wouldn't give me the S/N. Its not in their policy. I tried talking to them. They can install it in my computer but cant give me the S/N or DVD copy. 3) No its not possible to wait for Uni's IT team to deal with it. If they take my laptop once I wouldn't see it for next 3-4 weeks and I need this thing everyday. 4) It's a Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64bit. 5) I can not spend any money to buy a new software to search for that key. 6) I am not looking for the key to sell or distribute it. Many thanks in advance. :-) more

Resolved Question: How can I wipe my computer and start from scratch without Windows 7 disk?

I wish to completely clean my computer and start from scratch, but I purchased the Laptop (Toshiba Satellite L500 00F) with Windows 7 pre-installed. Is it possible for me to reinstall windows without the disk? I read something about boot install drive, but I`m not exactly sure what that means and I can`t seem to find anything on it. Side note, I also have a small problem with my keyboard keys reassigning. For example, my question marks (?) becomes É, my shift + 6 becomes my question mark, my shift + 3 becomes /, etc. Is there a quick keyboard command to reverse this/cause this? Very frustrating more

Resolved Question: How to wipe/clean install my computer?

Hi I am currently in the process of selling my inspiron 530 computer. However, after the BIOS/splash screen, it doesn't do anything and simply shows a blinking '_' character. When I disconnect the hard drive, it goes on to 'loading windows files.' I'm trying to clean install vista and wipe everything so I can sell the computer. However, since the hard drive won't let me boot properly and since I have no installation cd to boot from, is there anything I can do? more

Resolved Question: Install fresh clean windows on computer, still blue screen error?

Right my computer I don't even know the name of. Some specs are as follows Has an Asus a8n-SLI motherboad. Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ 2.21ghz RAM: 2 (I got another 3 I can put in) System type: 32-bit Operating System I also know the computer has an Nvidia graphics card. Right, before I installed a fresh copy of windows (Vista), the desktop had XP and before I even started trying to fix it, it used to blue screen if I tried booting from CD, if I tried changing firewall settings, system restore point. Just all blue screens! My mate some how managed to stop this but however, it still blue screened from trying to boot from CD. However XP was running fine now, I downloaded all the latest drivers as I managed to install my Belkin Internet adapter to access the internet. After everything was moreless up to date, the desktop let me boot from CD to install a fresh copy of windows. Now here is the new problem. Bit similar to last time. I can install the internet and access websites like Facebook and Google through internet explorer as usual. But when I try change the security settings, install Google Chrome, Install Adobe Flash Player, try download Service Pack 2 for Vista and when I click on the System Restore to have a look, it just blue screens and restarts and after this it just blue screens straight from load up half way through the Vista loading screen (with the green bar moving if you know what I mean, haha) so I have to boot from CD again and repair windows. So yeah, I guess it blue screens from trying to install any sort of software. My mate managed to fix this on XP. Do you know how to do this on Vista? My mate is a College Amateur and just guesses so he luckily fixed it last time. I done all the dirty work myself! Once it stops blue screening over stuff like that I can download all the latest drivers for it and get it running properly! Cheers in advance. more

Voting Question: How do I access the RAM on an emachines G640 laptop?

I have a broken Emachines that fails to load Windows 7 on a re-install or even a clean install. I've googled the problem and a highly likely solution is it's a RAM problem. The machine came with 3GB RAM (I'm assuming it's 2 x 1.5GB?) and would like to take 1 module out and try and see if it will work. If so I would upgrade my RAM as an excuse anyway. My Problem is I can't access the RAM to find it. There is one large panel with 5 screws but when I remove these screws nothing budges except for a small bit of movement at the top. I can't see any other screws holding it and there doesn't seem to feel like any screws under the genuine windows logo or the guarantee logo. Is this where I will find it and what is holding the panel in place? Can anyone help me?Edit, to the answer given below.I've tried removing the 5 screws on the back of the machine, nothing seems to budge. There are no screws under the battery housing.I always thought RAM was easy to access on Laptops as it's one part that needs upgrading. Obviously not on this machine. If anyone who has accessed it on a G series Emachine I'd be most grateful.Edit, to the answer given below.I've tried removing the 5 screws on the back of the machine, nothing seems to budge. Found the memory and removed it. Without your help I'd have been scared to force unless I broke it + I was unsure if the memory was under this housing anyway.Problem solved. more

Resolved Question: Overclock has disappeared?

I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 due to an error. When I went back in after the clean install the CPU-Z shows my processor reaching only 3.5 GHz when it was previously hitting 4.4GHz, I am running an i5 2500k and the manufacturer performed the over clock for me. I had repaired my computer in the repair environment several times before doing a clean install and the reports talked about 'Unexpected changes to your computer'. I have only entered the BIOS to change it so the Windows 7 disc would boot. Does anyone know how I can reverse this and the cause. If I cant reverse it, is it worth me losing it for a few days for it to be put back up? As it is in warranty and they told me to do a clean install so I imagine this would be covered right? more

Resolved Question: How to Install a old HDD in a new Motherboard?

Ok, So I'm on a budget and I have an old HDD I am trying to re-use, It has all my software from college on it, pictures, current work and games. I don't want to lose any of this, as it would cost Hundreds of pounds to replace and the pictures, impossible. I have the Windows 7 disc, and the old Motherboard but how do I go about deleting the old Windows 7 copy off the old HDD and then going about a clean install on the new computer without deleting all the Files. FYI, I can't buy a new HDD with the recent increases in price due to the Thai Land flooding's (as I had intended) with the left overs of the budget I am working with, for my new computer. Thank you.Can I not just delete the OS and/or drivers, so make it hold the files then I can install the OS on new system? more

Resolved Question: How to solve my laptop problem?

2 days ago I decided to clean up my laptop, unfortunately the Windows XP didn't allow me to be installed because it said "Your Windows XP version on my system is newer than the one you wanna install". So I decided to go the other way, through formating. Formated the D drive first, and when I restarted my Laptop, it didn't fully go through the Acer loading screen (it's Acer laptop), a black screen showed up with a "_" flashing in the top-left corner. I wanted to start up the system from the Windows Recovery CD, but then started showing problems with "Storage Device". Even though I tried to install all the drivers, it still has a problem with the Storage Device. Is it the problem with my HDD (is it broken, can I fix it or buy a new one), or is there a problem with something else, like Graphic Card? Pelase help more

Voting Question: I Have an old Laptop which is capable of running windows xp...?

Right, here it goes. I Have 2 Laptops, one, runs windows 7 at optimal speeds, and i have another laptop, that is built for windows 2000 but IS capable of running windows XP. Here's the problem, I Ran the setup for XP off a memory stick when i was logged into windows 2000, i did a clean install of XP, BUT when the setup was half way through, in text setup, it said 'cannot find presetup.exe', so i just ignored it, then another error of the same nature, this time saying it could not find 'setupORG.exe'. Now, i cannot boot straight off my memory stick, no option for it, don't have any optical drives nor a floppy disk drive; so my only option is to use a PXE boot. Sounds good up to now? Right? Only problem here is, I don't have a clue about PXE or DCHP an all of this, i have searched the net for hours finding how i can use PXE to install windows XP, but i just don't understand any of it. So, if any kind person on here could find or write a simple step by step guide to running the setup i would be massively grateful! Resolved Question: how can I optimise my SSD for long lived high performance on win 7?

I've bought an Acer Revo r3700 to use as a use as a htpc and i've put a corsair force sata 3 60gb ssd in it. and i've installed windows 7. i've installed xbmc and it's running smoothly. my end goal is to have two 2gb harddrives in one enclosure (one for storage and one for backup) plugged in a usb port for all my files and media and leave the ssd for applications and system files. so i wanted to know what optimization i should do so that the speed of the ssd does not decrease? how do i make my documents save to an external drive? whats the fastest 2gb drives i can get? i'm fine with doing a clean install of win 7I'm not really bothered about how long it lasts, i'm asking about performance. And yeah i want a fast drive for storage so that i can transfer files quickly between the two drives and other drives and so that xbmc loads 12gb hd mkvs quickly. Resolved Question: How much and how long will it take me to fix the damp in the house?

I am looking at buying a house which was previously repossessed.... we have considered the risks attached to the repossession side of things, but generally we love the house. It has potential and we just get that feeling from it... We are obviously not rushing into anything and will get a thorough survey carried out before etc. But I was just wondering if anyone could advise me on the issue of damp in the house... There is a bay window with black mould and peeling wall paper (coming from the skirting board so I considered rising damp) There are air bricks installed in it so I don't think the issue is ventalation. Also throughout the house there is black mould showing and the walls feel cold and damp obviously there is currently no heating in the house so I wondered about that being the issue, in which case I persume it's a matter of bleach clean, treat and decorate??? Or do you think something more sinister is happening... It was a sunny day so I couldn't see if it was penetrating damp but there is black mould on internal walls too..... Also one corner in the bathroom has a large build up of black mould.... Is it something a professional needs to fix or do you think we could do it ourselves? Either way what do you think the costs are??? Thanks for your advice and as I said I will be looking into with surveyors etc and getting a few quotes before we put in an offer. more

I'm trying to write a batch file to add a pc - that has just been formatted and had a clean version of Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 just installed - to a domain. After its been added to the domain I'd like a too add a user account to the pc, the user account is already part of the domain and its already been created. I know how to change the user name by asking for user import with the set /p command. If you use mydomain as the domain name, and myuser as the user name please - it'd help me greatly as I can see it clearer that way. The Pc is a brand new pc that comes with win 7 as standard, so we perform a wipe of the hdd and install win xp pro sp 2 - some of the software we use needs xp as its not compatable with 7 - I then use a pen drive to install sp 3 and the anti virus so it can put onto the network - if you need any information please let me know. Kind Regards TomThe user needs to be setup on the machine as they have to be setup as local administrator due to some of the software we use doesn't work if the user is not. more

I don't really feel like re-installing my windows 7 deleting everything I have and worked on just to get rid of 1 program more

Resolved Question: how can i control the damage from the XP Restore Virus?

A few days ago i got the XP restore/recovery virus with, admittedly a poor choice of file download. It hid all my files, more or less made my computer unusable. After a while i managed to use Rkill to stop the virus processing, but Mcaffee and Malawares Bytes couldnt find anything to delete. I managed to view files in the settings folder by changing the folder attributes, and by sheer luck i deleted a few files named as random letters and numbers which appears to have been the virus itself. I also deleted the original file i downloaded, and have since used malawarebytes, regrepair, McAfee, unhide.exe and cccleaner to help restore my PC back to a working state. The virus also gave me (again) the google redirect virus, which i have sorted using combofix. So anyway, that is the situation. My computer is running more or less operational, but now pretty slow, a lot of my programs still aren't showing, noteably startbar items such as notepad, calculator and all the system utilities such as checkdisk/system restore etc. But also hardware and devices, and other installed programs. Windows Live is nowhere to be seen, but according to the msn website it is currently running. Also, for some reason when i log on my computer beeps twice, and youtube videos will not play any sound. (iTunes works fine, as does all the computer sound files). Anyone have any idea of how i can cleanup the remnants of this feck of a virus, or any program that can clean up all these problems? Thanks for anyone who can help me clean this mess.I tried scanning in Safe mode but when i try to load my virus checkers nothing happens. I have run Malawares and McAffee a few times since this happened and sometimes it picks stuff up, sometimes it doesnt.I think it must be a registry problem, but im not technically savvy enough to know what i'm doing.I just realised i tried to do a system restore, but the function doesnt seem to be on my computer any more, it certainly isnt in the system tools folder. Should i consider just reinstalling XP? more

Resolved Question: How can i Multi Boot Windows XP, Vista 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit?

How can i Multi Boot Windows XP, Vista 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit? I have 4 hard drives in all. So i want to install XP on one Vista on another and 7 on one more. I want to do it without extra software if possible. Can i just start off by clean installing XP then vista and then finally Windows 7. If i did it like that when i boot up will i have an option with 3 versions of Windows to boot up from? I know it works that way by installing XP and Vista after but i've never tried 3 OS. Many thanks! If you think i need software tell me what one i need and please explain as well as you can either way. The more explaining you can do the better. Cheers Paul more

Resolved Question: Mounting an image onto an usb pendrive?

Hi. I have a netbook which, for some reason, will not boot (it keeps "looping"). I desperately need use of it for tomorrow, therefore I probably need to do a fresh install. I have managed to rescue files I need from the malfunctioning drive through Acronis Tools & Utilities (just in case any of you may be interested) so back-up is not a prob, but here comes the tricky part... I wish to do a clean install but I do not have any media readers apart from USB (no cd/dvd (external or internal) or floppy(?)). My netbook allows booting from USB. Is there any way I could put an OS image on a pendrive so as the netbook can install directly from the pendrive? What software (if any) can I use to perform the mounting of the image onto the pendrive? I read this article http://www.brighthub.com/computing/windows-platform/articles/57705.aspx on how to do it but I think I'm in need of an idiots guide. Any assistance is greatly appreciatedOh, it came with XP initially so ideally I'd like to reinstall the same O/S as per what was supplied as a recovery disk  more

Resolved Question: Should I change Operating System?

I've been a user of Windows Vista Ultimate from when it first came out and I unfortunately payed an extortionate amount for it. People always says it was a failure but I think alot of the talk, people were just conforming to what others said. How ever thats just what I think. Vista for me wasn't at all as bad as some people. There were a couple of issues with it but nothing I couldn't fix. Over the past couple of years I've been doing alot of programming and moving forward in software business so I did also use various programs that the average user might not and still found it fine to use. However times have changed and I just feel that Vista for me has become somewhat of an effort to have now more than an enjoyment. Just done a clean re-install and still the programs Stop Responding for clicking a few to many time. Even though Running a Quad-Core System with 4GB Ram. Now I don't know what to do. Should I downgrade to XP? I loved XP, but I don't know for how much longer it will still be supported, Or should I move to Windows 7? To be honest, I hate Windows 7 toolbar and apart from a few fancy features not willing to pay 150 pounds which was actually a 1/5 of what I payed for Vista. When I could easily get XP for a mere 20 Pounds. Views would be greatly appreciated. more

Resolved Question: how can I repair my computer’s de-frag function in Windows XP Home Edition?

I am in need of an [uncomplicated] fix for a recent (sudden) de-frag function failure: one day all is normal the "next day" no proper de-frag. De-frag starts, but does not complete the process even though it says de-frag complete: the final result is same as the analysed result prior to de-frag, which displays a message to the effect: "you should de-frag this volume". All the queries put forward by contributors on the web forums have been answered: enough space on HDD? (over 200GB available): plenty of RAM?(3GB available over three slots via 2X1GB matched memory modules from Crucial plus another 1GB in the third slot): disk check performed? (extended disk check carried out): start in safe mode? (in safe mode de-frag unchanged) SP3 in place? (SP3 installed when it first became available for XP):registry clean up? (ran Tuneup Utilities to do this). Carried out a restore? (restored to two earlier dates checking at each restore for de-frag functionality - de-frag remained faulty.) Windows updates? (system is set for automatic updates which has worked faultlessly for 'years'). Unfortunately, the suggested fixes seemed too complicated for my limited computer skills: many involving replacing folders (keys) in the registry or downloading programmes from sites unfamiliar to me with unknown provenance. With so many "solutions" on offer it makes me suspect that the contributors themselves are maybe a bit unsure what causes de-frag to fail. Yet it must be a well documented phenomenon so I feel 'someone' out there knows the definitive answer, which I hope will be easily understood by your average Silver Surfer - like me............? My computer is a custom build c.four years old, running an Asrock motherboard with an Athlon dual processor CPU. Hard drive is a new 500GB by Maxtor and has just two partitions: Primary and Logical. O/S is Windows XP Home Edition. AVG 2011 anti virus plus Super Anti spyware and Malware bytes Anti malware running - no glitches have occurred with any of these security soft wares (so far!). Possible causes for de-frag malfunction? No idea. Suspicions? An error message occurred when using my Soft-maker Office 2010 to print an envelope. Contacted Soft-maker support who supplied a hot-fix - the de-frag failure was discovered around this time, but is purely coincidence I think. The mentioned System Restore somehow, unfortunately, compromised my Soft-maker Office programme - when I opened the programme the display was in Arabic! SW support advice obtained (again) and a reset-repair to the programme restored the English version. One unrelated(?) malfunction occurred at about the time de-frag failed: the sleep function button on my MS keyboard failed, i.e. it only partly completed the shutdown process and, hitting the button (as normal), to resume the session, failed to reactivate the screen. I was obliged to power down the computer manually and restart the computer from "cold". The 'fault' persists. Further standard "clean up" routines have also been attempted - to recover wasted space; delete unused files, purge the recycling bin and a further registry clean; all to no avail. I am no Geek as far as PCs are concerned, but I can follow explicit, plain language, instructions - even complicated ones. However, I have no idea how to manipulate the computer's registry, manually - it's a 'no go' area for me unless someone can literally talk me through it. If anyone can help solving my de-frag issues I shall be most grateful. Thank You. more

Resolved Question: Java reinstall problems?

Did you delete Java from program files and couldn't remove the update in Add or Remove programs? Well this is how I did it! I downloaded JavaRa to clean up remaining Java files. This is the first thing you need to do, now use Windows Button + R and open up run, type in - "regedit" without the quotes in the box that comes up and press enter.. In this window, click the + on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" then on "SOFTWARE" and delete the "JAVA" folder. DO the same Process to the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" folder. Now you can redownload Java and install it without problems! Thanks Answer if this helped you!!! more

Resolved Question: How to delete everything on my laptop?

I have an old Fujitsu Siemens laptop laying around which is about 3 or 4 years old now and its just gathering dust. Best Buy has offered me £40 for it which is reasonable, however i think it may have personal data on it and wondering if i could just do a clean install of windows 7. But the main problem is that it came with windows vista home premium and then i bought windows 7 upgrade for it and did a upgrade install. Will it work if i just put in the windows 7 upgrade dvd into my laptop and then do a clean install ??I have all the important stuff on my external hard drive. I basically want to factory reset it, so that it practically has no data or anything on it. I only really used my laptop for homeworks and videos and pictures. But they might be stored in the temp somewhere. I jsut want to factory reset pretty much or get as close to it as possible more
