Resolved Question: Chances of winning a battle to keep a satellite dish?

I live in Amsterdam, and have recently purchased an apartment. I installed a satellite dish on my terrace, being careful not to (in my opinion) breach the rules of the association. Rather than fixing it to the building itself, I installed it in a plant pot. But I am not being asked to remove it. I have read on the EU site (http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/01/913&format=HTML&aged=1&language=EN&guiLanguage=fr) states that "The European Commission has adopted a Communication in which it states that private individuals should be free to use satellite dishes without undue technical, administrative, urban planning or tax obstacles. The right to do so flows from the free movement of goods and services, which are both fundamental Internal Market freedoms" ... although, it does mention a lot of other things as well. I am willing to pay for someone to install it on top of the roof of the building so it would be out of everyones view. Which, I think would be reasonable, and shouldn't be blocked. But, I suspect it will. What chances have I got to battle this decision??I made a typo ;-) "But I am not being asked to remove it." should read "But I am now being asked to remove it." more

Resolved Question: Should we buy our first home or wait a while?

We've rented for the last 5 years and had either the god or bad luck to move quite a bit so we've lived in about 6 different properties. We would really like to own our home and settle down but is now the right time? We're currently in a really nice apartment only 5 mins from where we work paying £450 a month in rent. For a mortgage of a similar amount we would have to look at an old 2 bed terrace which to isn't going to be as nice or as big as where we are now. It's a big first step onto the housing ladder and hare to make it too soon or leave it too long. more

Resolved Question: People who live in an apartment: I need your advice!!?

Hi, my boyfriend Luke and I are currently living with Luke's Mum and sister in a detached house. I like it because it's quiet - I'm quite a light-sleeper and noises in the night tend to wake me up. Luke's brother James lives in an apartment block and he says it's really easy to hear peoples' conversations and that he can hear people watching their TV, having an argument etc. Luke wants us to move out and rent an apartment (we can't really afford to rent a detached house right now and Luke really likes the modern look of some apartments we have seen). I am just really worried we'll be kept awake by inconsiderate neighbours or we won't be able to watch TV quietly because loud music will be playing all the time! If you live in an apartment, is it really noisy, or is it Ok? Or maybe you don't hear any noise whatsoever?! Any advice would be appreciated :) (By the way I'm pretty sure someone will suggest renting a terraced house, we're looking into those too, Luke is just keen on an apartment as he prefers them!). Thanks. more

Resolved Question: How much does a decent studio apartment go for nowadays in downtown NYC?

I'm going to get certified to teach in CA and NY, living in both states part of the year. I used to live in Tribeca (rent control) and wondered what a simple studio would go for today. Decent means with a bathtub, full-size ref/freezer, and perhaps a terrace.I'll probably keep my car in CA. more

Voting Question: Where can I file a complain about my landlord?

I lived in Westside Terrace Apartments in 3836 South Sepulveda Blvd , Los Angeles, CA 90034. I recently moved out of my 2 bed 2 bathroom apt and got charged a high amount of my security deposit. They charged me more than $700. I painted one bedroom in a different color. The size of the room was around 3x3 meters. All the other rooms were unpainted and in the original condition. In addition they charged me an additional double rent fee of more than 100$. I just want to know whether you think that is justified. I for myself think its just discriminating. They told me when I asked about painting one room that one bedroom would be around $160 to $200. However, I feel like they think that cause I am an international student and had to pay a 2 month deposit they can do that with me.The color was a "light grey". So it was not bright or anything. They always paint the apartments in a creme color so I think it should not be hard to cover. I was asking them by email already. They haven't replied me. more

Resolved Question: I don't want my grandma's house to get knocked down...?

(nothing to do with polls and surveys but I get good answers here... Yes, so, I don't want it to get knocked down, neither does my grandma. She own a terrace house in a row of five. Over the years, a lady bought the other four, but couldn't get my grandma's. She died in 2007 and then the family of this lady sold the four houses (it looked kind of stupid, house for sale, house for sale, house for sale, house not for sale, house for sale). A developer bought them and tried to talk my grandma into giving her house over in return for two apartments, which he will build. She had no other option, she was literally being kicked out of her first home, the one she's had for forty years. She moved out about six months ago and is living in my uncle's house (not his home, but a house he owns for rent). She rented the place out to some people for six months. When they had moved out, I went with her to see it for the last time. The whole terrace was dilapidated, dirt, broken plasterboard on the house next door, she used to have a lovely garden and it has all been wrecked. She started crying, but tried to hide it. It's a beautiful Victorian house and what gives anyone the right to take it away from her. Houses have 3 stages in their life. 1) Wow, beautiful, big, new modern (new houses today) 2) Disgusting, old, (houses built in the 70's) 3) Beautiful and full of character.(houses built <1960) This whole terrace has gone past the 2 stages and now it's up to the 3rd stage. It's going to take at least 50 years for this new apartment block to come to stage three. I can just imagine, in the future, there will be something on these terraces stating... 'These beautiful homes, demolished in 2010, and replaced with an ugly 2010 apartment block, why didn't someone stop them?' The house next door to it has been knocked down and huge cracks appeared in the wall, the window frames were falling out of place, the floorboards were creaking everywhere. I remember the top panel of the one of the sash windows have fallen down, so I pulled it back up, locked it, walked out of the room, looked at the room for one last time, then closed the beautiful four panelled door. I will never forget that, I walked under the arch in the hallway towards the front door, looked back at the arch with my grandma, then locked the door. No one in my family wants it to get knocked down, except my dad, but the owner of the house doesn't, is that all that matters? She had the option of keeping her house but it would look really stupid, having apartments either side of it. How can we look at it in a positive way? (sorry for being long)Are you serious, a 14 year old buying a new house... if you insist. more

Resolved Question: I am moving from aparment of 1 bedroom to another bigger of 1 bedroom and in a new building, which is best?

I live in a city, middle class neighborhood, located in the center of the city. The apartment I am leaving is top floor with a balcony overlooking the avenue and 2 blocks away from subway station. Disadvantages: it is rather small, on a 35 years old building, close to the south west limit of a cheaper neighborhood. The options I have looked for, same neighborhood. 1st option. On an street a block away from an avenue, 3 blocks away from subway station, it is the closer one to downtown an commercial area, cinemas and malls, 5th floor and balcony overlooking the street, library space added on a 10 years old building with a common private square. It is the cheaper one, also bigger than the one I have but the smallest of the other 3 options I have. Disadvantages: the rail-train is a block away ( and it is 3 blocks away from train station) so it can be a little bit noisy with windows opened, and an stadium is 5 blocks away where soccer games are eventually played and eventually recitals too. Materials : porcelains and carpet on living-room, wood floor on bedroom. 2nd option: New building on an street and a block away from an avenue, 5 blocks away from subway station. Disadvantages : the most expensive one because it is in the most expensive area of the neighborhood, no room added for library ( because it has a large living-room), the kitchen is into de living room and not in a room apart, the building has a common laundry room, the balcony looks at the back yard and it is a 3rd floor. Materials : living and bedroom with plastic finishing floor looking like wood. 3. New Building. Top floor on a street a block away from an avenue, large terrace on top floor overlooking the city, and common-private yard. It is the second expensive in price. Disadvantages: no library space added because it has a large living room, it is located on the north west border of this neighborhood limiting with cheaper neighborhoods, 16 blocks away from subway station, the street is bit dark at night, far from any commercial center, cinema and mall ( at least 20 blocks). Materials : living room and bedroom with plastic finishing floor looking like wood. 4th option. It is the biggest one. In a 5 years old building, on an avenue, balcony overlooking the avenue on 5th floor, room added for library. Common swimming pool and common-private yard for the building. Disadvantages : the kitchen is half into the living room and not completely separated, is close to the north west limit of this neighborhood with cheaper neighborhoods, 18 blocks away from subway station, far away from any commercial center, cinema and mall ( at least 25 blocks). Materials : porcelain on living-room and wood floor on bedroom.I am the owner, I am not renting. I am selling my aparment and buying another. more

Resolved Question: How would you have reacted in this situation? Am I cowardly?

I live in a three bedroom terrace house, with two storeys (ground floor and 1st floor). Just after midnight this morning I was sitting in my living room watching a DVD when I heard a noise - it took me a few seconds to realise that it was my upstairs smoke alarm! Startled, I ran upstairs, and straight away flung open all the doors to the bedrooms - I genuinely thought there was an actual fire! Noticing that their wasn't, I silenced the alarm, but it went off again a few moments later. It transpired that the battery needed replacing (I know some alarms randomly go off when the battery starts to run down). I went out to find a late night shop and bought a fresh battery, but after the experience, I was trembling. I was a complete wreck and spent the night sleeping on the sofa with the TV on.... I woke up this morning feeling really stupid and feeling very guilty about how I reacted. I mean, I'm supposed to be an adult! The truth is I'm very nervous about fire and while I am glad I have two working smoke alarms I really hope I never need them! These feelings have been especially strong recently since some good friends of mine had a lucky escape from their apartment when a fire started in their kitchen at 2am, which destroyed the kitchen and living room... Do you think I'm justified to feel embarassed by my fear, and by how I reacted? If YOUR smoke alarm went off just after midnight how would you have reacted? more

Resolved Question: I want to buy a condo, which types appreciate better?

I'm stuck between a 2500sq ft 2br/2bth on the 2nd floor of a 1920s building with formal dining room, great room with lots of potential, guest bed, master bed, large kitchen with butlerpantry, library/den and unobstructed water views for $$. It has the potential of being exceptionally posh and is ideally suited for traditional furniture or antiques. or a 1300 sqft 2br/2bth that's waterfront, on the corner, with a great room (living dining kitchen) and two bedrooms with ensuite bath on the 10th floor of a 1970s building for $, with the option of buying both it and the next condo for the same combined price and size as the first condo in the 1920's building. the combined floorplan would be a den and guest room on one side and a large master and guest room on the other side seperated by a very long living area (living, dining, kitchen). this building has floor to ceiling windows and would look fabulous with a modern style. They are cheap enough that for half of the price of a nice new small middle class house across state lines, i could own both apartments. I'm buying in a relitively nice area and prices are at least 90% off of comparables in NYC and LA. I really want to buy something that will really be special in 20 years. Which condos typically did the best in larger cities? Ones on the higher floors of the building, terraces, waterviews, park views, high ceilings, lots of square feet, the building style? Is it just generally a crap shoot and fickle to evolving tastes? Which styles age better in the long term: fancy moulding and marble or sleek lines and granite? My friends generally tell me their tastes, and my real estate agent just wants me to buy something more expensive and i can never get a straight answer. more

Resolved Question: Is it okay that I send this girl a note?

She's this girl, probably a couple or so years older than me. I'm 20. She lives in my apartments but she hardly ever comes out. However, she does look up from her window towards my terrace quite often, and so many times I have caught her looking at me. In fact just a few days ago we shared this really long gaze. It must've lasted 6 to 8 seconds. Then she looked away. The other day it was raining. She was at her window, her hands out, trying to feel the water. She didn't know that the water falling on her hands wasn't the rain, it was the water coming down from this exit pipe on the roof. I wanted to gesture her to keep her hands in but all I could manage was a wave, which when she saw it, quickly looked away, confused and shy. A few seconds later, she went in, got some paper, and made a paper boat in front of me, and dropped it down in the water. She made a few more, and each time she'd look my way to see if I was watching. I knew she was trying to be silly and cute, because there was not much water below her for the boat to float on. You see, I can't go upto her house and talk to her because her mother is strict and so is her father. They are Pataahns (a pakistani caste). So I was thinking I send her a note through this little boy I happen to know really well who also lives in my apartments. He must be 5 or 6 years old. When she comes up to her window, I'll show her the kid, and gesture her to come to the front door. What do you guys think? And should I give her my phone number in the note? She does have a phone. What else can I write? You guys think its a good idea? Thanks. more

Voting Question: Apartment law and order?

I have an open terrace attached to my penthouse. It has a pipe line running through one of the side with some water meters for the flats below the terrace. The access to the terrace is through one of my bedroom. Every month somebody from the managing committee comes and checks the water meter readings. It is now over 10 years and I have never objected to this. Of late some of the residents had some dispute with newly appointed secretary specially due to his arrogant behavior. I was one of them and I asked him not to enter my house even to see the water meters. In a note to the association I have request them to send anybody else to check the meter reading except the secretary. I am not making any hindrance to the working of associations. As far as water meter reading is concern they can always send any other member for the job. But the secretary is insisting that it is his duly to check and he only will come. My questing is do I have right not to allow someone in to my apartment. Even though by virtue he is association’s secretary. Will the forceful entry to the terrace through my bedroom will amount to trespass. If yes under what section I can protect my privacy. more

Voting Question: how can i get rid of imagining bad thoughts that might happen to my loved ones?

i am always imagining bad stuffs that might happen to my loved ones like my parents, siblings, husband, and my daughter. it started when i finally got separated from my parents (to move with my fiance, now my husband). a few days after i moved in with my fiance, a bunch of maniacs threw heavy stuffs at our apartment (at our glass door) at 3am in the morning and the noise from hitting our door was so loud (i even thought it was a gun shot) it seemed like they wanted to break it and get in and do bad stuffs to me and my husband. i admit im afraid to die and i got so scared. after that incident i have always imagined about bad stuffs happening to my loved ones. everything i do, everywhere i go i always think that something bad might happen. i cant even watch movies that has killing in it because i imagine it happening to my loved ones. when we have plans of going somewhere i am always thinking about what ifs. what if this happens to him, what if this happens to me or my daughter. and it kept picturing in my mind even if i dont want to, even if my eyes are open and im doing something else. i cant even go near our terrace when holding my daughter cause i have also imagined falling off from it. im sick of it. every night i kept thinking about random bad stuffs that might happen to them even if i know it wont happen. im sick of imagining stuffs that might accidentally happen. i have become so sad and cry all the time because of this. i dont know what to do. do i already need assistance? i cannot tell my husband about it because i dont want him to think im a freak. has anybody had this experience and did it go away eventually? more

Resolved Question: Can a Parole Officer ask for a key?

My husband is on parole, he is coming up on his 4th year. He got into trouble at 18 spent 5 years in jail and ever since he got out he has been doing what he has to do. He went to welding school and has a full time job. Apart from a couple of speeding tickets he never gets into trouble. We just moved into a new apartment and he was assigned a new po. His PO decided to stop by this morning at 5:30 and told him that we either have to keep our terrace door unlocked so he can get to out main door (which would mean it would have to stay unlocked all the time) or give him a key so he can get in. I do not feel safe with either one of these options, Can he really ask for us to do this? BTW we live in NY.Ben can you please tell me why he has the right to make me feel unsafe in my own apartment? more

Voting Question: My daughter has violated my plans for her and is living in an area with blue collar workers. Please help me.?

My 20 year old daughter and her four year old son moved out my house last week and in with her 21 year boyfriend in his apartment. I do not approve of this at all and fear it will ruin my grandson. Her boyfriend, I will admit, is a good man and a hard worker (he as a mechanic and lives over the shop in a small apartment) but hes not right for my daughter. I wanted my daughter to grow up to be a successful girl and marry a fine, well off man and have a comfortable life in wealth and a nice suburb and not in an apartment in a working class part of the city. I went for dinner yesterday and was appalled. The whole area is terraced row houses of brick and look filthy and old. The people are all blue collar and speak in working class accents. I feel this is not a good thing for my daughter and grandson too see. It may give them ideas and I do not want them to join the poorer classes but rise up. My family and husbands families are all lawyers and we live in a large house, in a nice suburb, with educated and well to do people that my daughter and grandson need to be with. I tried to tell my daughter this and she just called me a stuck up snob and says she would rather live with good honest working people that my block of snobs any day. I was very offended! I am not a snob. I know some working class people are alright but classes do not need to mix and my daughter was born in a well to do class and needs to say here, marry someone of our social standing, and live in our suburb and not be with a blue collar worker and in a working class area to live with just enough money to get by and be happy. Its not right at all. I am tempted to sue for my grandson to save him from the working class but another part says let it be. I am not a snob but just want whats best for my daughter. With me, my grandson would have everything and so long as hes in the working class part of town, its going to be "work with your hands for what you want and live with only wages" I mean who is right here? Does anyone get my point? My daughter is working as a waitress in a country club, again not what I wanted for her! I wanted her to be a lawyer. more

Resolved Question: I Killed Someone and I have questions.?

I Recently killed a man in Self-defense. Because there were no other witnesses I was charged with manslaughter. I am currently out on Bail. And awaiting trial. I cant go into detail about the case for obvious reasons but I can show you what was in the newspaper at the time of the incident. It is as follows: Man charged in lethal stabbing Police awaiting autopsy results before making decision on charges By KELLY SHIERS and DAN ARSENAULT Staff Reporters Wed. Feb 24 - 4:53 AM A Halifax man has been charged with manslaughter in a fatal stabbing in Spryfield early Tuesday. M****** E***, 28, will appear in Halifax provincial court today, Sgt. Bill Morris of Halifax Regional Police said Tuesday night. Robert D****** P****, 48, died after being stabbed in a third-floor apartment at 6 Foxwood Terrace. Police rushed there after receiving a 911 call at 1:34 a.m. E*** was arrested at the scene. "Upon arrival, we located two men in the apartment," Const. Brian Palmeter said outside the long, brick apartment building. "One was suffering from a single stab wound to his upper torso. That individual was taken to hospital where he was pronounced deceased." Palmeter would not say who called police. He said officers weren't’t initially sure who lived in the apartment and were going to speak with the landlord to find out. E*** was remanded Tuesday night to the ***** **** ***** Correctional Facility in D********, Morris said. E**** and P**** knew each other. P***** death does not appear to be connected to any other criminal matter, and he was known to police, Palmeter said. A man who said he works at the apartment building but wouldn’t give his name said the building has about 140 units. A sign at the entrance noted that security cameras are on the site. Several other apartment buildings are nearby and use the same entrance. The building’s property is separated by a chain-link fence from the J.L. Ilsley High School parking lot. Elaine Crawford, whose second-floor apartment is directly below the crime scene, said a young man moved into that apartment about three months ago. She said he occasionally came to her door asking to borrow items, and he had visited her at about 7 p.m. Monday to ask for potatoes. "He said he only wanted a few and so I gave him about six potatoes," she said. Crawford said the young man gave her a couple of dollars for the potatoes. She described him as a thin, very handsome, white man with short dark hair. She didn’t know his name. About three or four hours before police came, Crawford heard a lot of noise coming from the apartment, she said. "About 10 or 11 p.m., I heard a real big thunk, bang, boom and I thought, ‘Oh my God, that guy upstairs must be noisy.’ " Things returned to normal and she thought nothing of it until police arrived hours later. Even then, she didn’t learn until much later that a stabbing had taken place. I am living with my parents right now. And things seem to be going a little better. However I am having a very hard time dealing with this. At first a felt a major amount of guilt. And sometimes I feel like he deserved it. I think about it allot. At least 100 times a day. I am afraid about whats gonna happen in court, I know the guy tried to kill me but I second-guess myself, I have blocked things out and cant remember certain things that night, I have nightmares about it, I forget things like the sounds he made while he was dying and what I said to the 911 operator, It seems so surreal. I killed my friend because I truly believed I had no other choice (or did I). Was this my fate? Why did this happen to me? Where can I get help for something like this? more

Resolved Question: What grows well in the this climate (vegetables on a terrace)?

I am moving to a town near Frankfurt, Germany into an apartment with a large terrace and I wanted to know what grows well in that area, and when. I know a little about the climate, but I don't know enough about gardening to put the two together. Is there a US region that is similar in vegetable-growing seasons? My ideal vegetables would be: cherry tomatoes, onions, squash or butternut squash, zucchini, cucumbers, maybe lettuce or other common salad greens. I'd also like to try some herbs (which I hear are easy): basil, rosemary, parsley, mint. If you know what the growing season is like (or have a link to a related website) or know a US region that is similar in climate (temperature, humidity, wind and rain) then I can go from there. Thank you! (Also, any terrace-gardening tips would be greatly appreciated!) more

Resolved Question: If this makes Palin a "tax cheat", then what is Charles B. Rangle?

Palin: ---- Records: Palin cabins not noted in tax assessments ---- "Property taxes totaling $156.13 were paid on the land in 2009" "The two parcels of land, separated by one lot, total 25 acres and had a combined value of $30,000 in 2007 through 2009, according to assessment records. Dunivan said the data collected in Thursday's survey will be calculated into 2010 assessment notices being mailed out at the end of the month." Rangle: "The New York Times reported on July 10, 2008 that Rangel rents four apartments in the Lenox Terrace complex in Harlem at below-market rates. The newspaper reported that Rangel paid $3,894 monthly for all four apartments in 2007, but that the going rate for similar apartments offered by the landlord in that building would be as high as $8,125 monthly" "Rangel received thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from one of the company’s owners, according to The Times." "... experts cited by The Times indicated that the difference in rent between what Rangel was paying and market rates on the second, third and fourth apartments he rented, an estimated $30,000 per year, could be construed as a gift as the savings is granted at the discretion of the landlord and is not offered to the public at large; if this should be treated as a gift, it would exceed the $100 limit established by the House of Representatives" "Rangel was also accused of failing to report income from the rental of a villa he owns in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, a three-bedroom, three-bath unit that has been rented out for as much as $1,100 per night in the busiest tourist season, from mid-December to mid-April." "...was one of several early investors who had interest payments waived in 1990." " ...Rangel's attorney, disclosed that Rangel had failed to report $75,000 in income he had received for renting the condo on his tax returns" "Additional accounting discrepancies were disclosed on September 15, 2008, including omission in Rangel's financial reports of details regarding the sale of a home he once owned on Colorado Avenue in Washington, DC,..." "...discrepancies in the value listed for a property he owns in Sunny Isles, Florida .." "... and inconsistencies in investment fund reporting." "An article in the September 18, 2008 New York Post states, "Rep. Charles Rangel has been using a House of Representatives parking garage for years as free storage space for his old Mercedes-Benz - a violation of congressional rules and a potential new tax woe ..." "On November 23, 2008, the New York Post reported that Rangel took a "homestead" tax break on his Washington, DC house for years while simultaneously occupying multiple New York City rent-stabilized apartments, "possibly violating laws and regulations in both cases." "In December 2008, it surfaced that Rangel paid $80,000 in campaign funds to an Internet company run by his son for the creation of his PAC website." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_B._Rangel#cite_note-nyt071108-39 more

Voting Question: What does it mean "apartamento exterior" in Spanish?

I see it in many ads: "Se alquila apartamento exterior" or "Se vende apartamento totalmente exterior". I understand what is "se alquila" or "se vende". I can't understand what does mean "exterior" in case of real estate. First I was thinking that it's an apartment with a terrace or balcony but it's not.The first answer to my question says that such a phrase can't exist, but it exists. Search in Google for "apartamento exterior" and you will see. I live in Canary Islands. Maybe it's some local dialect?I am not Spanish nor English. I don't understand both "apartamento exterior" and "exterior apartment". more

Resolved Question: Could somebody please correct my essay's grammar? ITS URGENT PLEASEEEE I WOULD BE SO grateful to you?

7 years ago when I lived in Puerto Vallarta, across the golf course in an apartment at the very first level, we can just walk to the lake that was in front of our terrace. So one day after school I saw my mom with a weird scary face and I was just staring at her wondering what was happening. My sister and I enter to the car and my mom just start to drive and telling us that tonight we were going to sleep in a hotel because a group of men were going to fumigate our house and that we couldn’t be there because the smell was toxic, so I stop asking questions and I just enjoy the night in the hotel. The next day after school we went home and everything was normal again instead of the smell, it was still there, but we really don’t care we just sit down for eat. My mom was normal again, so she decided to tell us the true about the weird night of the hotel; she told us that a crocodile was under the sofa and that it was huge and he just stay there and anybody can move it, my mom really was freak out she was so scare, she almost call the police, but then my that just call the staff man that worked in the hotel so they can take him out and left him in the lake again. I was shock I really get freak out to. That night, when I went to bed I really couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t sleep for a week I just feel the croc was under my bed. Eventually I get over it and just forget about that. A month later we heard about this old lady that always went with her puppy to the golf course to play with us and told us that her puppy had been bitten by a crocodile on his leg and that the puppy would never goanna walk well again, and after that we saw the puppy just walking all wrong and crying every time he walk. Every Sundays my family and I went to play golf and we always saw this old lady with his bitten puppy just seating on the golf course restaurant. more

Resolved Question: I found this on my farm. I ate it.?

Resolved Question: Dog Training Tips - How to teach her to get off the bed?

I mentioned this problem in another post (about the dog puking) but I think it needs some elaboration and its own question. I have a female, 6 mo.-old Sheltie. I'm just looking for tips. I want to help teach her how to get off my bed, without embolding her to try and go up and down stairs. The reason for this is that she is not yet fully trained to "stop and come" if she gets away from me, and she's bolted out of my second-floor apartment door twice. The stairs are a buffer zone that I know she won't cross and I can catch her. I've scolded her about the bolting, and she's stopped, but its still a safety zone. She is both one of the most intelligent dogs I've had AND the most hard-headed/ornery. The breeder whose helping me with her warned me that she was strong-headed, so this has been a character trait since birth. She learned 'sit' and other "tricks" after less than 4 commands, so I know she's not just being stupid. I've trained many dogs before, but this one is just... wow. :P Now, part of the issue here is that I don't know why she's scared to leave the bed. It is one of those Ikea beds, so it's just over a foot off the floor -- I might as well be sleeping on just a mattress. While it's still head-level with her, I've seen her jump off of other things. When I walk her in the park, she'll hop curbs and two-foot or higher terraces with me with absolutely no problem or pause. I have a three-foot tall bed in my living room for a couch (I'm cheap, okay?), and she gets off of that just fine. I know she's still a puppy, but I wonder why she thinks the bed is more dangerous than these other things. I want her to sleep with me. I don't want her getting on my bed while I'm gone. I work a VERY long shift -- too long for her to not go potty, and I accept that, but she gets on my bed and gets trapped up there. I'm tired of washing sheets. :P I come in from work and she's sitting there with that look on her face that says she KNOWS she's messed up and she can't even hide because there's nowhere to go. The only option I have is shutting the bedroom door, which means shutting my two cats in there since that's their only access to their box in my bathroom. It just seems mean to them because it really is a very small space. She was originally crate-trained, but I used to live with some roommates who would ignore her or tantalize her in the crate (one of the reasons I moved out) and then blame me when she wouldn't stop barking at them. I would have to go and get her and stick her in my bed to make her be quiet, that or stick her in an unventilated room which was NOT an option. The crate's become a "time out" zone, so I don't want to leave her in there when I go to work and make her think she's being punished. Think I've covered everything. more

Resolved Question: Is it dangerous to have a labrador in a large 9th floor apartment with a large terrace incase of jumping?

We have moved into a large flat on the 9th floor with a HUGE terrace which has 3.5 foot high railing/glass all the way around. The terrace itself is around 65 square metres. There are parks next to us and a beach where we plan to walk said dog 2-4 times a day. I am wondering with adequate care and training, would there be any reason to be concerned about the dogs safety in regards to jumping the railing? Also, is it wrong to raise a labrador in these conditions? The main issue is that we were planning on putting his (we want a male) bed/kennal on the balcony where he would sleep at night.... By the way I just measured the rail it's just below 4ft high. more
