Open Question: How could I become a drum major at my high-school?

I'm currently a freshman in my high-school marching band and we have 2 senior drum majors this year. I march trombone and I'm pretty good at it, seeing as I'm Asian (lol, not trying to be stereotypical or egotistical here...) and having already played it for 3 years. I have a very extensive knowledge on musicality and keeping time but only a basic knowledge on leading/orchestrating a marching band. I really want the drum major position at our high-school next year when I become a sophomore, and I know the likelihood is small and there are probably going to be juniors after the position too. I'd like to know where/how I could be a good drum major because I have the entire school year before auditions and I think I might stand a chance by then. more

Open Question: Now that im not in high school anymore, i cant find metalheads anywhere...?

Open Question: Back to school shopping, new wardrobe for a junior in high school? Major help needed!?

I'm looking to change up my wardrobe a bit. My style is more, I guess laid back? than most girls my age. My wardrobe consists of v necks (colorful ones from pac sun like nollie and kirra), band t shirts from hot topic (quite a bit of black, but colors, too), hoodies that I wear tank tops with, "skate" shoes (dc's, a pair of etnies,), flip flops, a pair of moccasins, and belts (studded and colorful). Honestly, I'm getting sick of what I wear. I have so much of similar things that it feels like I'm wearing the same thing all of the time. I want to dress a bit more mature, but be able to wear some of what I have once in a while and look more mature overall, especially since I just started my junior year the other day. I don't have a ton of money to spend though :/ What items are necessities in a girl's closet? Like what type of shoes (sandals, boots, sneaker, etc.), belts, jewelry (what kind?), tops (v neck, cardigan, sweaters, etc.)? Anything else? You can use examples from stores like Forever 21, Pac Sun, Hollister, American Eagle, Wet Seal, Victoria's Secret, since I have those in my local mall. You can use polyvore sets as examples of outfits as well. The last part of my question, what type of bag should I carry? I'm 15 living in California Ok,here's my problem.. (I'm not being negative...it's FACTS) I'm NO good at school. I SUCK at it. You know my grades? straight F's. I'm not the type of guy that fails classes because I mess around in class and ignore school. I fail classes because I'm just simply not smart,but for some reason no one believes that. Open Question: Do i have Anxiety??? Please help.?

So i play flute and of course im not the best in my band, but now im in a higher band class this year. And last class my teacher had us play a note or two by ourselves. As soon as i heard him say that my heart started pounding, i was shaking, breathing heavily and was a lil warm. This has happend twice now. And it doesnt feel normal. Also i get nervous before some classes randomly. And sometimes when someone is supposed to pick me up and theyre late i think "What if they were in a car accident" but i dont freak out like i do in band. Also like if i call someone and they miss the call SOMETIMES my thoughts in my head go"what of theyre dead or something?" Also when i swam and did softball i would be nervous about my race or game thinking im gonna lose or strike out. And whenever i go on a plane i wanna cry because im afraid its gonna crash. Im also a really shy person when it comes to meeting people... sometimes it depends i guess. And when i like a guy i never go far with it bc i always feel he will reject me. And the same goes with asking a guy to sadies...which is coming up.. But i guess what im asking is IS THIS NORMAL? WILL IT GO AWAY? Im really nervous/scared about this and dont wanna talk to my mom... shell probably think its nothing. So please leave your answers. Im 16. My heart also speeds up sometimes when i have to talk about myself in class... like the 1st day where you always have to say something...idrk sometimes im so confused..i wish i wasnt so shy like that. I dream and wish i could dance in front of people. Like i dont even wanna go to the dance because lll be too nervous to dance. I dont wanna look stupid. i also worry about when i turn 18 like living in an apartment or something by myself.. ike what could happen. Open Question: I think I screwed up my friendship. PLEASE need help!!!!!?

Im am 18 and have known this girl for 12 years and she was probably my best friend. I never thought of here romantically before just cause I was friends with her before I even liked girls. She is very hot but I just dont really see here like that. I was at a house party and she was there to, we were both pretty drunk cause we were playing bp and I took some shots. After almost everyone left I was upstairs with her and my friend who owns the house, he goes to the same high school as me. I was playing madden 11 and call of duty with her upstairs and my other guy friend was sorta trying to hook up with her but he was really wasted and not making much sense. It was like like 2 30 am and the house owner said he wanted to go head to go to this other party cause his friend told him this girl he was into there. There were only like 20 people left in his house at the time but he told everyone to go, me and kelly(my friend) were gona go with him to the party but I really didnt feel like it anymore cause it would be like 3 when we got there cause we would have had to walk. The house owner who im good friends with said I could stay at his house cause his parents were at Niagara falls for a wedding. Kelly was also gona just spend the night there to. We were both still pretty drunk and playing rock band. I dont really smoke weed but I sorta had like an urge to smoke a bit so I texted the owner and asked if I could use his bowl cause people were smoking earlier during the party and he said it was fine and said he had some bud in a shoe in his room. Kelly also smoked to and we each did like 4 or 5 bowls. It was like 3 now and we started to play rock band again but I was sucking really bad so I put in DDR but we ended up just watching the colors and stuff and listening to rappers delight track on ddr for like 20 min. I was messing around with the daves xbox playlist and kelly just sorta was laying on me and rubbing me. I was paying really much attention cause I put on Big L, and was just chillin, I dont rember when exactly it got really sorta awkward carlos santana came on and I noticed she was rubbing me weird and I started to freak out cause her hand was in my pants. I have gotten blowjobs before but this time was different. idk if it was because I was really high but this ******* was amazing like I cant even describe it it was so good. Right after I came I realized sort of what just happened and who gave me the greatest bj ever. Open Question: whats the point of sports in high school?

k im a senior in highschool and i HATE sports.. i dont mind playing them myself because im actually doing something but even then i dont really like them.. i dont understand why we need to have them in schools. they dont help at all academically and just distract people... if people want to do sports i think they can form leagues outside of school .... we have football/vollyball/soccer/bowling/tennis .. what every happened to clubs like chess club (im NOT a nerd... im not smart enough and im a metal head......but i would LOVE a chess club.. it actually helps academically)... today i had to go to a stupid pep ralley... they school needs to decide if they want us to be competitive or not..its like "tonight we will win bla bla bla bla". then its like "but we are premoting unity between schools".. same thing goes for classes (grades like freashmen/softmore/junior/senior) the money used for sports could be channeled into other areas that actually matter.. like making us smarter.. im not a nerd or a geek im just observant and tend to think things through....i dont think the scholarships for 5-10 people per school justifys the money (i dont know how much but i know its alot more than goes in to the band programs and other programs) .im being civil in this i expect your answers to be as well more

I have random chair tests over scales in my high school band and for some reason I always get nervous and my fingers start shaking which makes me sound weird. I don't know an easy way to stop shaking because I'm not scared, but I can't help it. I need a practical way to calm down (besides deep breaths, shake it off, .... yadda yadda yadda) Please help!!! Ok, so I'm 14 years old. I'm still in the closet, but like I don't think it's really THAT secretive...? If you get what I'm saying? Like I'm pretty sure people already think I'm gay. Anyways, I haven't really confirmed anything. So over the summer, I was adding ppl on facebook, and I added this guy that I kind knew (like I'd seen him around school, never really talked to him). Anyways one day he IM'ed me, and we starting talking about bands we liked, etc. Just kind of small talk. But then a few days after, he told me that he was bi-sexual, and I was the second person he told (he first told his other bi friend). So I kind of got to know him better, and we started talking on the phone, etc. I also asked him if he wanted to join GSA (that I'm going to be running this year at my high school) and he said he would. But now that the school year started, he got back together with his ex (that's a girl). We don't have any classes together, but we do both have the same lunch period. He'll say hi to me sometimes when he sees me, but other times he doesn't..? I just wanted to ask what you guys thought, because I didn't want to waste my time pursuing someone who really wasn't into me. Open Question: Thinking of selling up to rent and I could really do with some advice?

I've been living in my own home with my 2 kids for 12 years now. I have a considerable amount of equity in the property as house prices have risen considerably since then. However the house I live in is in a bad area which is getting worse and house prices are not rising or falling proportionately with other areas. I am desperate to move to a better area to make life better for my kids but I just cannot afford the mortgage repayments in the sort of area I am looking for, but I have found that rent is cheaper. I've been seriously considering slamming my equity into a savings account and renting a nice house in a nice area. I've budgeted and I can afford the rent (it's higher than my current mortgage) without using the interest on my savings using my earnings alone. Obviously I have to take into consideration being in a higher council tax band, but also the fact that I won't have to pay for maintenance and repairs on the new house and I will make some money on my savings. Obviously I wouldn't ever own the new house, but to be honest I don't actually think I care. I actually see my bricks and mortar in a poor inner city area as a ball and chain around my neck and if I'm honest being a single working mum, I am rubbish at the upkeep side of things and I absolutely hate DIY with a passion. I am just wondering if there is something big I haven't thought of and if anybody could give me any advice. I'm not looking to profit out of the housing market by predicting a dip and then buying back in, I can't be bothered with all that. I may buy again sometime in the future and I may not and I am very careful with money. Please help. :o) more

Open Question: Cross Country for beginner?

i just joined cross country but i have no prior experience to running long distance. i'm in marching band which gets intense so i'm in good shape. i'm a girl, a junior in high school, and weigh about 115 lbs. the team runs from 2 to sometimes 8 miles a day, it changes. after, they go into the weight training room for 15-20 minutes. practice is everyday but i can only make 3 out of the 5 days. i really want to do it but i need tips. help? more

Open Question: Has anyone ever heard of this brand?? P?

I've been searching for flutes and I've found this brand called Varbelli. I watched a video and the guy said that it was a good quality instrument and that it was great for a advanced flutist. It looks nice and not cheap like the Oves I have. I've never heard of this brand before. I'm trying to stick to brands I know but its hard when they are really expensive. Would you call a flute (any flute in particular that is this price) a piece of crap? Thanks. Please no mean answers. Open Question: Is this Tinnitus Permanent?

So i wen't to the rockstar fesival and, all was well until this one airbourne band came on. They were really loud and high toned. So after a hour of them playing we heard a7x and disturbed. On the way out to the car i noticed my ears felt clogged and i couldnt hear. I just though it would last 20 min or so. But it's been 2 days and it's not gotten much better. I though it was gone but it came back again, i noticed its rlly bad when i wake up. I wanted to know if it was perm or what? im only 14. And life would hell with this. My symptoms. - Clogged ear sensation - Ringing Noise - Everything is a higher pitch now. I didn't even reconize the phone ring because it snded so much different. - ear ache - Some sounds make this really high pitch noise when heard - I hear random noises.... more

Open Question: Child support and half of expenses?

My husband's ex-wife chose full custody of the 3 children when they divorced years ago. My husband pays around $300 per child, he paid for alimony for around 6 years till she got married 2 years ago.Note that this is Ohio. Now the eldest who is 19, a few months after the support ended on her and according to them "she chose to leave" ex's house (kid denies this and I honestly believe she was kicked out). However, ex and her hubby send certain expenses over which they believe we should pay half for some expenses like driving school, band camp, etc. and my hubby has been paying full amount of school fees. A few days ago ex's husband forwarded the middle's child's school fees which is $193 which they even don't suggest to pay half of. My husband sees 1 or both children every 2 weeks, the expenses we pay for with them like eyeglasses, driver's temps, driver's license etc. We even give them allowance which their mother refuses to give them. My question is, does this sound fair? We have heard through the grapevine that the ex has even complained that we" don't even do half of the driving" for the kids. I think they are of the attitude that since hy hubby divorced her (for cheating), he should put up with whatever. While the ex's hubby seem reasonable most of the time, I think he seems to disregard the idea that they have full custody and get child support while we have the 19 year old who is having a tough time finishing high school and we paid for her correspondence course (she had a job but we asked her to focus on trying to pass high school). While we usually don't have a problem paying for some expenses, I think that since they have full custody and child support that they shouldn't be asking for half of expenses or even forwarding to us their school fees for us to pay in full. We even offered to get full custody of them (their grades have not been good, they are smart kids but don't get a lot of motivation or guidelines and believe that we can help them more with their studies) but interesting enough...they refuse to surrender custody. more

I'm just starting my sophomore year of high school, and I really want to make sure I get into a college I like. My prime choice is Tufts University. I want to major in either Creative Writing or Literature (I want to be a screenwriter/novelist). Here's what I've done so far. I have a 3.6 GPA, and I'm in the IB Program. I'm taking all honors classes except for Chinese and band (neither of which have an honors level). I'm taking AP US History this year, and I will be taking the AP test. Next year, I'll be taking a combination of AP/IB classes. I plan to take as many as I can without overloading myself (I have an anxiety disorder I have to manage). As for extracurriculars, I'm in drama club (I plan to direct a one act play of mine this winter), marching band, winter drumline, a book club that I'm the president of (I also created it), Young Democrats, a writing club that meets at a local bookstore (been a member for five years), and the director/screenwriter for an acting group that I'm a part of. I'd really love to go outside of Southern California for my education, seeing as I've been here all my life. Im a sophomore in high school, and when I look around it seems there are more and more "bad people". Im mostly referring to teenagers, but adults also. One "good" teacher I had, quit out of fear because of the african american students rioting in his wood shop class. This is North California. My friends have also seemed like d*cks lately. My one friend tries to get me to act out in which ever way will create entertainment for him. Such as trying to get me in fights, ask out girls, and so-on. The few times ive listened to him, I was screwed over. The other one which seems to be a good guy, today made a joke that I took offensively. When I said the band he was going to see is stupid, I then said that my mother listens to them. He then said that "She probably couldn't afford a ticket because she is too poor". My family is very wealthy, just going through some economic troubles at the time, which he knows nothing about. His mother is the lunch lady. I then punched him. He is a good guy, but before a ride a few hours away to a wrestling show, he made a racist comment about my family as a joke. I didn't say anything, but that really pissed me off. My other friend is an atheist, and openly insults God. How much lower can one get? Everyday I eat lunch with people I don't like, and can barely stand. One won't shut-up about video-games. I am 15 years old and going to be a sophomore in high school. Music is what I love to do. I play the piano, guitar, ukulele, drums, steel drum, bass, clarinet and the trumpet. I have taught myself all of these instruments with the exception of the clarinet. I write and compose my own music on all of these instruments, but I realize that what many people keep saying is that you need a private instructor. Is this really necessary? I can also read music fairly well from playing clarinet in my band at school but I prefer teaching myself everything and figuring things out on my own. Open Question: DNA floats out of well after gel extraction?

I am currently trying to isolate a vector pre-treated with CIP (calf intestinal alkaline phosphatase) from a gel. After cutting open my vector with two restriction enzymes, I run it on a gel and extract the bands. This always works fine, and I get a high DNA yield after gel extraction. I then treat with CIP for an hour at 37 degrees C to remove the phosphate bonds on either end of the cut vector. The problem I am having is this... after the 1 hour treatment on a heating block I add sufficient amount of loading dye and pipette into a well in a gel. The gel is 1%. The product has floated out of the well immediately both times I have tried it. I have ruled out a gel problem as I tried loading just loading dye on its own and that settles fine. I'm guessing a possible ethanol problem but I follow the Sigma gel extraction kit exactly (two x 1 minute spins, one with ethanol wash, one without). This should successfully remove the ethanol. But.... as SOON as the product touches the TBE buffer the gel is run in... it disappears like a ghost. Any help greatly appreciated, thanks. more

Ever since going to the DCI quaterfinals, it got me thinking that i wanna join a drum corps, and I don't wanna be guard; its not my thing. Also, as a piccolo in marching band its kinda hard to hear a piccolo out on the the field especially a flute. Should I talk to my band director about this? My 8th grade band director had to talk to the high school band director about me, when i wanted to switch to french horn. They told me that I'm more potential on the flute and that it'll be easier to get into wind ensemble for hs my sophmore year. And for french horn, I could learn quickly and get used to the mouth piece but I would have to get private lessons. I don't really wanna have my parents to pay for lessons, and I don't really wanna go to private lessons because I'm so busy during the school year, and summer is marching band and sports. So what should I do? more

In my opinion, i'm ugly. I give myself a 3 out of 10 about how much i'm cute. My brothers calls me ugly and gay (although i'm straight). My first love (i fell in love fast but she has a bf) told her bf that i'm a freak and a nerd (it kind of true i never got less than 50marks in exams). I have curly hair and my face is full of acne, acne scars and 4 beauty spots. I'm very thin but my body is full of beauty spots. On my right arm, i have about 12 beauty spots so i never wear t shirts without sleeves. I'm trying my best to get rid of everything to get me cute but nothing is working ( i don't want to have surgery) . I fall in depression when i look in the mirror or at my skin. I'm going to be a singer (i'm the lead singer of a punk/pop/ power pop rock band) in a month and my appearance is keeping me back from my career. Once i heard that a girl entered American Idol, she had a perfect voice but they eliminated her becuase the judges said she wasn't pretty enough. Is this going to happen to me to?Sry, i had to write a lot. more
