moreResolved Question: Universal Performance Backbox any good?
I have a E46 BMW 318i and am planning on getting rid of it soon for another car so i don't want to spend much money on it, but my car is due for its MOT and my current backbox has split and is really rusty so dont think it will pass its MOT with it on and im pretty sure bmw's need the back box welding on so have found a welding company who said it costs around 25 to 45 quid to do it.
My question is are these universal backboxes off ebay for 40-60 quid any good ? the reason i ask is that they are actually cheaper than the proper bmw ones or normal ones i found which ive been quoted from £129 to £160 quid for, it says the universal exhausts are a little louder but not much which i can live but need to get an exhaust sorted soon. most local garages have quoted me around 190-250 quid if they were to order the part in and do themselves so this seems like a good option assuming theyre are ok
any help would be appreciated thanksa backbox is the back part of an exhaust

moreResolved Question: Car modification??? HELP??!!?
I need to know which is the best choice for an exhaust modification in my case. I am primarily interested in the deep powerful rumble of a performance exhaust, rather than the power increase. I have an Astra 1.6 but am thinking about getting a Golf 1.6 and would love it to sound SIMILAR to a Subaru. I say similar because i understand that is not possible as it is the engine that generates most of that sound combined with the exhaust. But anyway i would like to replicate the sound and preferably would love to have the power increase also. Which would be better between a full exhaust system and just a backbox??? HELP???
moreResolved Question: is my moped legal (aprilia habana)?
I am 16 and ride a 50cc Aprilia Habana. I have passed my cbt, mot, got tax and insurance. As a 50cc moped (and as a learner) the bike is designed not to exceed 30/35 mph, But once i received my tax disc and began riding on the road, it was clear this limitation was not working. The bike will reach around 45/50 mph on a flat road, and almost 60 on a down hill.
I started looking into it and learnt the bike has 3 limiters, 2 of which are in the exhaust, but after comparing my bike to other habanas online, i noticed the exhaust wasn't the same...
The exhaust on my bike is called a 'vince touring performance exhaust' (it must have been fitted by the previous owner) but this modification has not been declared to the insurance company. Does this mean that the insurance is void? And does this mean i cant ride it on the road?
P.s i did not know about the modification before i insured the bike.
moreResolved Question: Help choosing the CORRECT and best price/performance parts for a chevy 350 rebuild-?
Hi there! Im busy compiling parts for a Chevy 350 sbc street build. I have considered top end bolt on kits, but for reasons unknown im also looking @ custom parts. I know what i want though! Def low end to mid torque, around 400/440 hp. I wont be racing! just pushing the seats back in the streets! I live in Cape Town SA so i have to import so im really trying my best to listen to the hundreds of pieces of info out there! I want to avoid HP cons, pistons etc cos its pricey - im hoping to reach the mid 400's with a top end only build - is that too much to ask? One guy reckons with a single plane edelbrock jr intake, comp cam 306 and larger valve cut STOCK Chevy heads and a Holley 750 double pumper he gets 425HP - can that be true? cos then i can toss the performance heads for that? i think 450hp is the limit for street, more is too much? so far Chevy vortec heads seem best option price/performance wise, any ideas? i want to save as much money. Ill get new/used: carb, intake, cam, springs, cam, blot kit, exhaust headers, distributor on everything else stock(block, crank, pistons, etc. I don't mind spending a little extra for a little extra - even if its just peace of mind. I would happily up my budget IF I HAVE to - otherwise id rather not. ). apparently single plane offers better high end torque where dual plane better low rpm torque? the vortec heads also appear 2b better for low end grunt than higher revving, so good choice number 2? (and whats the diff between bowtie and vortec?) after that cam/carb/intake is easier to choose! ANY suggestions welcome! thanks a mil!its a stock engine, no idea on tranny yet... im upgrading the suspension with jag stuff. the car is a rather hefty ford cortina XLE form the 70's, 4 door sedan. Ill be strengthening the rear diff aswell for twisting... and better rims/tyres.sorry, but i think manual definitely? rear diff will be decided when i figure out tyre sizes - and i want a gear for loger distances at lower rpm... ie highway cruising... any gearbox suggestions and what rear suspension i can consider? (Jag xj6/12 @ the mo - quite a few of those around here stripping) - thanks all! and im totalyl for the old school power thing - but im sure machining stock heads would 'almost' cost as much as vortec heads on ebay? (seen some @ $240 / set)Thanks all: updated thoughts. On the 383 stroker, it seems the machining alone will cost quite a bit. im hoping to get away with $1500 for the lot, incl engine.a newer block (post '87), vortec heads, cam/carb headers/spring+arp bolt set on stock crank/cons/pistons. I would like to leave the bottom section for a 2nd build-up (for when i get used to the power!) - im hoping for 430hp on top end (which is max?).is there any HUGE reason why stock crank/etc wont make it? ive seen all kinds of mixed responses, and im not too ready to accept either. Just the machining here could 'almost' cost the price of used vortecs on ebay! and then they could stuff it up! 383 involves grinding/machining deluxe and the risks just seem to multiply, incl the costs. from what ive read i can make the HP on top end / headers. I also need help on transmission. Can i have a 5th overdrive for cruising?will i get more power on manual? as im sure an auto will save fuel (!!) - all advice GREATLY appreciated guys/girls

moreResolved Question: Best Performance Upgrades for a Vauxhall Astra SRI 1.8 petrol?
I'm not looking to increase top end speed by much, just really hit the torque as standard 123bhp i do 0-60 in about 8.5 seconds, i've looked into un-restricting the airflow and installing a K&N filter and a performance exhaust as my car is still under warranty and finance.
For the exhaust i'm looking for something not too loud, something that purs but when tested gives a real roar; any thoughts?
Also, with regards to an induction kit, tampering with factory air filter and changing manifolds...i don't want to install much as i say, it's still under warranty/finance..will this be affected?
If i do change the exhaust and air filter, how much more bhp and torque power will this give me? Please inlude prices, also, anybody want to add anything in anout ECU remaps - not looking for the plug ins, something where i can have an engine dyno tool where i can monitor/tune my performance..what benefits are there of this in terms of bhp and torque, is it worth it, cost and also any rules under warranty/finance?
Anybody with info on how this will affect insurance with estimates and explanation will be a legend!
Cheers folks.
moreResolved Question: Should I accept retirement at 54?
I have not worked for a couple of years, and the last 5 temporary/casual jobs I have had in the last 5 years have led to inexplicable terminations, I suspect because someone has a vendetta against me and is in a position to tell employers not to employ me as soon as he finds out where I work. He is a detective by profession, and quite capable of doing this. He also once told me intended doing this as a way of shutting me out of a New Years Eve party we were both at. He is good at covering his tracks, and I have not yet gained enough evidence to take him to court. All I get from the employers are platitudes. There is never any case of unreasonable performance or misconduct; it is all political. As a temp, they are within their rights to sack me whenever they choose with no come back. It is the same situation faced by those suspected of being communists in 1950s America. Maybe someone here has experience or knowledge of dealing with covert blacklists?
The last job, a casual driving job, took 16 months before he tracked me down, since I was taken on on a day-by-day basis through an agency. It was exhausting and I could only manage 3 days a week. I did these awful jobs because I hate being unemployed and just wanted to keep working.
Now, I feel that I have slowed down too much because of age and depression. An hour in the garden and I am tired out and have to rest. I am also forgetting things. I have the mental age of my 84-year-old mother. I am struggling attempting to persuade myself, let along a prospective employer, that I am fit for any paid work, and that I will ever work again. My CV is ruined, and quite frankly nobody would take me on now because of my recent employment record.
I don't have a pension that I can live on, and I don't qualify for a State pension for another 12 years. I am eating through my mother's inheritance right now, and hating myself for it. Jobseekers Allowance requires me to be actively seeking work, but since the last termination, any thought of this futile and soul-destroying activity makes me suicidal, and I spend most nights between 4am and 9am coaxing myself back to sleep by dismissing all such negative thoughts. There must be many who have given up on Jobseekers Allowance because of the hoops to jump through are just too destructive to one's spirit, or simply do not qualify for one reason or another.
Is it therefore a foregone conclusion that I have effectively retired, will never work again, and must come to terms with living as a pensioner? This means too giving up any thought of marrying my girlfriend (who lives 8000 miles away but we are daily online contact), since Government rules require me to be in a steady job before this is possible. The terms of my annulment make the same condition, and we are both practising Catholics.
Self-employment is not an option, since I do not have a viable business plan, or the domestic or moral support at home to keep me going in the hours required to put in to set up a business.
Voluntary work I find is a form of cheap labour, where I have to cover all my own costs, such as petrol, and take on all the jobs and commitments that others are not stupid enough to take on for nothing. Volunteers get no thanks, just extra things piled on. I find that the less you are paid, the less you are valued, and the worse you are treated.
If I live to be 90, what is the point of living another 35 years like this? I am too young to retire, yet not fit enough to meet the criteria required to be taken on.
What comfort can be offered to those in a similar position?Boris - funny you should say that. One temporary job I had in 2000 was with a local authority inspecting toilets. I had a good rapport with all the toilet attendants. There was an old Polish gentleman with his daughter who always greeted me "khello, my friend" and kept his toilets spotless. There was an ex-army sweat who did double shifts and lived for the job and his customers. There was a lazy so-and-so who would often skive off for the afternoon. All characters. I loved that job, but sadly they gave the permanent job to a woman. I think I spoiled it by suggesting the council had a duty of care for a young lad who would be ambushed by louts when he knocked off duty late in the evening. Also the woman manager wanted a woman working under her.
moreResolved Question: Should I relocate or find a job locally?
Hello,
Just a message to ask you whether I should relocate or find a job locally.
I started a job nearly one yr ago and the commuting is driving me mad (3h30 rtn depending on traffic). I am tired and now this situation is affecting me deeply. Although I am starting to like my job, I am exhausted. The company does not support relocation unless you are a manager.
I thought of relocating but because my performance and work relationships have been affected, I always feel that I am close to the exit door (also unsupportive manager). Sometimes I feel it is risky to relocate if I am not sure about the job. Please tell me what you would do in my shoes? Tx

I was recently diagnosed with migraines and really need some advice on how to reduce/eliminate them. There seems to be no reason or rhyme why I get them I just start with tingling in my arms and legs and then the head throbbing starts.
The doctor has given me painkillers and they do take the edge off the pain but even without the head pain the pins and needles remain, I feel exhausted for days after and have problems articulating. I feel quite emotional too.
I have had a brain scan so there is no underlying serious problem. Still these are getting me down and starting to affect my performance at work. Any ideas?

moreResolved Question: Renault Laguna 1.9DCi vibration noise - what is it?
My 2002 Renault Laguna diesel has a vibration noise that starts at 3100 rpm and stops again at 3900rpm when the engine is revved in neutral. It also makes undue noise going forwards under strong power, and makes the noise going backwards on overrun. I have replaced the exhaust, engine mounts, clutch, intercooler and air filter. I have had the noise since I got the car 12000 miles ago and it doesn't affect its performance in any way. Can anyone (Renault mechanic perhaps?) suggest what is causing it?

I need a new exhaust on my 07 Zetec-S but because of the bumper cut out i have the standard one would look terrible (under curled pipe) so i was wondering would the ST exhaust back box fit onto it as it has a straight pipe?
Also it has failed an MOT because the one i have now is "too loud" yet i see millions with sports exhausts and a lot louder than mine so how do they manage to pass an MOT?
Do they take them to performance garages for the MOT as they are more likely to pass them?
I took mine to a normal garage and everything non standard including the slightest of slight blue tint in the sidelights was wrong.Ye, no need to be a prick about it. Dno whats crawled up your arse but dont answers questions with that sort of attitude.
moreResolved Question: Too many players with 'limited ability' at Liverpool FC - but stick with Rafa or time for a change ?
good morning friends and foes.
Whilst I wasn't surprised @ last nights result, or even performance - It was excruciatingly painful and as well as fustrating, watching Rafas men starting XI in action against a struggling Wigan side.
Struggling as they may, full credit to Martinez and his boys for getting the job done and winning the game. They were hardly playing total football against us, but being the diehard avid red that I am - i sat through much of last nights action.
Torres and Gerrard have recieved too much a$$ worshipping and loyalty from the fanbase this season - some players simply are not bringing that extra quality needed to the team, and I am fed up with reading comments from fans saying the former simply can't do everything themselves.
The truth is, Gerrard looks like a shadow of the player he was in 2008/09 and the fact Rafa seems to have no faith in the other forwards at our club to be given nod ahead of an unfit Torres means we are left to watch a disorientated, underfiring out of sorts Liverpool side week in week out.
If Torres is not performing because hes not fit - then introduce him into games late, as a sub.
I know many will say 'you only regain full fitness if you're given 60+ mins regularly' , but i'm afraid Torres just isn't in a side where he can score goals without being fully fit. Which leaves me exhausted with the 1 billion dollar question, why on earth isn't Ryan Babel getting his chance to start in games ?
While I don't doubt that Rafa HAS the ability to get it right, and guide the club to its first time in 20+ years - I do feel that he has only himself to blame for the delay and getting it awfully wrong this season. He is an able bodied manager but surely even he ought to have realised the pressure of the job at Anfield, and that filling the vacated seat of Houllier meant no more illogical transfer signings and tactical mistakes.
In a way I sympathise with Steven Gerrard when during the early part of the season he remarked " this was supposed to be our season where we'd be right up there..."
indirectly hes expressing his dissatisfaction at where the club is going, and of course at the running of the club itself to some degree. His way of letting Rafa know that he got it v.wrong this year.
SAF arrived at Old Trafford in nov 1986 and won the league in 1993.
Rafa arrived in the fall of 2004, and won the Uefa champions league in his first full season in charge followed by the FA Cup 2 seasons later and...and then led the team to a strong title challenge last season.
One would have thought he'd either match that this season or go one better.
Instead its like he completely lost the plot.
I appreciate that this is not the same era as the late 80s and that now it will be doubly hard for a maanger at a club like Pool, to wrestle the EPL crown away from the likes of United,Chelsea and Arsenal and of course with emerging sides Man City, Villa and Spurs means its going to take something SPECIAL from Rafa to end the 20 odd year title droubt.
I just wanted to address this to everyone, including Chelsea, Arsenal and United fans. Its going to take a monumental effort, from the position hes got the club in now - to steer the ship back on course again. Hes doing his best with what resources he has, but i honestly do not feel we have XI players on the pitch who are functioning well collectively.
Too many players in the side looked like they had little next to nothing extra to offer in support of Torres and Gerrard. I've never seen such 1-dimensional boring rubbish players in my feckin life, Lucas and Kuyt spring to mind. Insua simply looks in doubt and uncomfortable playing where he does and he has nerves written all over him.
While I can see the intelligent reasons behind refraining from throwing Aquilini into the deep end - and wants to make sure the lad is quietly and carefully introduced itno the EPL.
You do that with players whom you feel are v.special and need protection. This means that we have to sadly wait till next year, till we see more of him and the best of him.
I'll end with saying we have the most disjointed, dispirited 1-dimensional players I've ever seen at the club in a while - and I feel we have 2 choices, which we go for is up to the fans.
1. Simply put up with Rafa for now and accept the state of affairs hes got us in - until he eventualy puts things right again. After all, Mr.Ferguson won the league in his 7th full season in charge at United during arguably a time when the 'best team in the land' were clearly on the descendency and his club on the ascendency.
2. Too tactical and cagey ? lacking adventure and ideas ? fed up with foreign managers at the club ? time for a change ? Shall we bring in Kevin Keegan ?
all the best - sorry for the long rant

moreResolved Question: Mk6 2003 Ford Transit - van wont rev over 1000rpm and smokes?
Basically my van is a 350 90ps 2003. Its been running and driving fine without any issues until now...
I went to start it the other day and found that it would start perfectly fine, but when you went to hit the accelerator pedal it would sort of hit 1000rpm and just stop dead. The revs would sometimes fluctuate as if it was struggling to keep the revs at 1000 but not dropping below 850rpm then suddenly going back to 1000rpm.
I also noticed a load of smoke pouring out the back which settled down when the van wasnt revved but as soon as the pedal was pressed it would smoke. Its a sort of whiteish colour and smells so not water vapour.
I had the van diagnosed on a scanner and the fault codes I had were the following...
P0404 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation circuit range or performance
P1665 - Injection Pump Control Module Communication
I have since removed the EGR valve and cleaned it out with some EGR cleaner, I also cleaned out in the inlet manifold which did contain some crap but not a great deal to be honest. I then blanked the EGR off and reinstalled it and plugged it in.
It started fine as always but still wont rev over 1000 rpm. Its also literally putting out tons of white / grey smoke as soon as you hit the revs.
I did notice that it put on a camshaft or crankshaft sensor fault code as well but I wasnt sure if I might have disturbed a wiring plug for this sensor whilst taking the inlet manifold off as this wasnt shown when I last ran a diagnostic on it? Is the wiring plug for one of these sensors in this area?
Would one of the above sensors being faulty cause the van to find it hard to rev, etc?
Thanks
Phil

moreResolved Question: Maybe my last question about motorbike?
maybe, but probably not haha
so this one refers to my choice of bike,
see, all bikes in the UK (just to bring everyone in on the question) have to be limited to 33bhp for 2 years if your under 21 when you take your test (correct me if i'm wrong) so i was thinking, as i'm going to be buying my bike soon, about what to get. basically, i want a 2001 suzuki sv650s. because they're apparantly, so i've heard etc. a doddle to ride, and they're very cheap. i was also thinking of a new exhaust, like a double exaust (is that what they're called?) would that make an awful lot of difference. also a lot of people have said that 650cc is too much for a first bike but surely with a 33hp limit it's not going to be insanely fast. and i think i could handle it with 33hp. so i was just wondering if this is a good choice, and also, what would be some performance figures, 0-60, top speed etc. roughly because i really don't know.
thanks again guys :)
moreResolved Question: Car over fueling after de-cat please help.?
Hi guys im hoping you can help. This weekend i had a cat back exhaust system fitted. The blokes at the garage recommended a de cat as well, increasing performance and economy although it needs to be swapped over for mot's as it will fail emissions.
Any way the guys did a great job and the exhaust sounds good not offensive but definately noticable by the way the car responds. Ive now driven about 200 miles and the EML light has just come on.
The guys at the garage said this wouldnt happen what do you think could be causing this ? They've put the lambda sensor into the "de cat" pipe perhaps they could of damaged it ? The car smells very rich like its over fuelling.
Any advice would be appreciated, i dont want to fork out for a sports cat. The car is a 1.8 Honda accord Thank you Lewis

moreResolved Question: why should boyracers be victimized?
cars are my passion ,fixing cars is my job ,and driving them is my life. theres a time and a place to let loose there called track days!!.
not all boyracers should be victimized. yess u do get little arseholes that drive like absolute fannys in streets. they will learn from there mistakes.
ive been driving years and never crashed once and if i have had a near miss its been because of older ppl not young drivers.!!! AND I CAN SAY THAT NOW AS AN OLDER PERSON!!!!!
when i was younger I DID HAVE alot of nonsence in my head but 1 thing i could do is drive!.
I had faster reactions i could see and hear better! a was more alert to get out of sticky situations. and all my life ive had high performance cars my 1st car was a s2 escort rs turbo with the 2.1 zvh that car is still around today! then when ppl victimized me i decided to play on it hence the loud exhausts . for me that was to get on older ppls nervs.
who agrees??shouldn't be called a boyracer just because they have a modified car. mabee thats there passion aswell!
LIKE I SAID THERES A TIME AND A PLACE .IVE NEVER OBEYED THE STREETS LIMITS!!!! COCKY COW AT THE BOTTOM!!Good answer TONY S
moreResolved Question: Still low power output after running bike on dyno & remapped & yoshi R55 slip on upgrade. what could be wrong?
This weekend, I’ve had my bike fitted with a Yoshimura R55 slip on exhaust and remapped on dyno through an official Suzuki dealer.
Gained a bit of power but still a bit disappointed with overall performance. According to reviews my bike, with the stock exhaust should have 108hbp!!! When my bike ran the dyno, (GSXR600 K8 with 7000miles on it with Stock exhaust) I got 98hbp. Now with the Yoshi upgrade, dyno & re-mapping, I now have 105.7 hbp. That is still less than what my bike should have with a stock exhaust.
I haven’t installed mods that could increase the bike weight – Why is it so low?
Thanks,
S

moreResolved Question: Help!! My boyfriend and I have some S-e-x issues :S. Long story, 10 points?
Hi. I need a lot of help on this one!!!
My bf is now 22. Since he was 13 he has been masturbating... almost daily, once when he was like 17 he did it 6 times a day, just so you get the point of how much he liked it, and how much he liked the bodies of the girls in the p-orno magazines. There were times in his life when he tried to stop it, but he stopped like a moth and then he started doing it again and more frequently.
He was a virgin, and when we decided that we would have sex (like 4 months ago) he stopped masturbating that much, and he started doing it like 2 times a week (cause, even when he wanted to stop it became a sort of an addiction). We started having sex like 3 months ago, and at first he had a lot of trouble keeping his erection.
He (I didnt asked him to do this!) promised me that he would stop, cause he felt lame masturbating, and he promised me that the only way that he would have something to do with sex would be with me, and especially because he thought that his "bad performance" in sex was because of that much masturbation.
I know that he has been through all of that, because we have a "100% confidence with each other sort of deal", but he has broken that deal before, like two times.
Since we started doing it (like 3 months ago), we have been keeping a regular frecuency of like... 5 or 6 times a week. So I thought that having sex that often he would not have difficulties on avoiding masturbation.
This last two weeks, I was really busy and we did it like just 2 or 3 times. Yesterday, we were trying to do it but when we were doing it, his thing just died.
I read that i could be because he already had done somthing that day that exhausted him, but when I asked him, he told me he didn't, and that he has been truth.
Now, please!!!! Knowing all the story, can you tell me what do you think that could have caused this "failure" while doing it? Do you think that he is still masturbating, but as he promised to me that he wouldnt, he is just ashamed to tell me?
Do you think that... it might be due to something else?

moreResolved Question: Should I remap my bike after exhaust upgrade?
Hello,
Should I remap my bike after exhaust upgrade?
I’m replacing my stock exhaust with a slip on Yoshi R55, and the Suzuki tech guys are asking me to remap my bike which will cost me an extra £160. Is this really necessary? The only reason I’m getting the R55 is it get rid of the pony c**k exhaust and improve the acoustics. I’m not really into performance racing and £160 pounds seems to be a lot of money, or I’m I underestimating the remap benefits & work required?! Would I lose some BHP by swapping the exhaust without a remap?
Thanks,
Seanyes remapping means tuning an engine for better performance or fuel efficiency by reprogramming the Engine control unit. Some people call it re-jetting...
moreResolved Question: question about extractor fan and maximum length of duct to the outside?
Hi, I have to install an extractor fan in an upstairs ensuite. This will be at the front of the house and I didn't really want to have a vent at the front. I'd rather go into the loft space and put the exhaust out under the eaves at the BACK of the house.
I am aware that the performance of the fan will deteriorate as you make the duct longer but is there a "rule of thumb" for working this out? - for instance is a 12 foot duct only half as efficient as a 6 foot duct?
I am guessing the fan will have to push the air through about 18 feet of ducting. Is this excessive? - could I install a "booster" fan half way along?
We are talking about 4" flexi ducting here, by the way. Just a bog standard bathroom extract fan. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
