Resolved Question: Dell XPS 15 (L521x) GPU Too Hot When Gaming - Decreased Performance - How Can I Cool It?

Hello, I have a Dell XPS 15 (L521x) laptop. While gaming my GPU heats up to temperatures ranging from 73 to 77 degrees Celsius (NOTE: This is with a CM Storm SF-19 cooling pad). My question is how else can I reduce this heat because I know as it gets hotter it throttles back to avoid crashing, thus decreasing performance. Here are specs of everything: Model - Dell XPS 15 (L521x) OS- Windows 7 64-bit CPU - Intel Core i7-3632QM BIOS - A13 (Up to date) SSD - 128GB (OS is on this, 30GB free) HDD - 1TB (300GB free) RAM - 16GB GPU - Nvidia GT 640M Drivers for EVERYTHING (including my graphics card) are up to date. CM Storm SF-19 Gaming Laptop Cooling Pad with two 140mm Turbine Fans (1200-2600 RPM's, I always keep it at max blast) Using software program, Open Hardware Monitor (and having my cooling pad on max blast), I have retrieved the following data: ~ My CPU idles around 60 degrees Celsius and can max around 70 degrees Celsius ~ My GPU idles around 44 degrees Celsius and can max around 77 degrees Celsius My room temperature varies from 10-20 degrees Celsius (50-65 degrees Fahrenheit) I had this laptop since July of 2012 and I had just had my motherboard swapped (GPU was integrated), heat sink re-seated, and cleaned of dust (wasn't really any in there). It was under warranty (and still is). There aren't any problems with the fan and I've tried using Speed Fan to manually regulate fan speed but it can't detect my fan (I don't think it would matter anyway because the fan always properly adjusts to the demand of power and processing). I made my own power plan (using the "High Performance Plan" as a foundation) which makes my laptop at max performance (no power saving). I always defragment both drives (SSD only when above 15% because I heard defragging a SSD is not good for its longevity) and I always perform disk cleanups, scans, etc. Essentially I try to keep everything clean, organized, and updated. I have a lot of games on Steam and Origin that I play and most of the more graphic demanding games (such as Battlefield 3, even on minimum graphics) really heat up the GPU and as a result the performance decreases (and no it's not lag). Note: These games are not played from CD's. I always leave my laptop plugged in (but not always on, mostly on sleep or shut down at night), any unnecessary background programs or services closed, and try to lower brightness and turn off LED key lights unless necessary. I've looked everywhere for an answer but I still can't seem to find one. I want to thank in advance those of you who fully read and provide any such answer to my problem. I know a decent amount about software programs and hardware so don't be tempted to "baby" technical terms with me. Lastly, please DO NOT comment on things (such as why I need 16GB of RAM) unless it contributes to answering my question. Also, I know the cooling pad blows out air but does not suck in any and redirect it and my intake vent is in the front of the laptop and the exhaust vent is opposite (in the back). The pad definitely makes a difference but is there a way I can simply "suck out" the hot exhaust air and blow air into the intake? And I know the aluminum body does not help for reducing heat. One more thing, please don't recommend me any software programs to download because I just don't like having them or relying on them. Like I said before, thank you in advance. ~ Nick more

I have a pretty large two-seater go cart with a 5 hp Briggs and Stratton engine. It's driven by a clutch but I may consider converting it over to just chain driven by mounting gears to retrain directly to Rear driveshaft. Is there any way that I can modify the clutch as a six or modify the gearing to make it go faster. I want torque but I want to be owed to spend the tires ha ha. hello, I drive a 1994 Toyota pickup with a 22re.Scenario: Noticed that engine makes a detonation (pinging) "like" noise under (the slightest) load on flat road. So, on the next tank of gas I filled up with 93 octane and poured in some lucas octane boost (which brought me up to about 96 octane).Took for another ride. Same thing. So, then (with 93 octane-no octane boost) I retarded the ignition to the point where I could notice a decrease in performance. Still makes noise. Always under load. When truck is idling there is no noise. Rev up while idling, no noise. So, I (think) I have ruled out detonation. Could it be an (slight)exhaust leak? My experience with exhaust leaks is they always sounded like a stock car (with straight pipes). I am at my wits end. Help! more

Hello, I drive a 2008 Chevy Aveo and I am looking to make the vehicle quicker. I have already installed a partial exhaust system, I redid the piping right after the catalytic converter with 2.25" piping and a Magnaflow muffler and a 3" exhaust tip, it definitely sounds a lot better. I have been looking for a cold air intake to replace the OEM intake but my results have not boded well. So, my question is if i custom make an intake and run my own piping from the throttle body and put my own filter in will it have the same effect as purchasing one made for a specific vehicle? But I also have one other question. The Aveo does not have headers available for it, it instead uses a manifold (like most stock vehicles) but do you people, based off your own experiences and expertise, think that there is any way possible a company or anybody can custom make headers? I know it would be expensive but I am just curious. Thank you.Just to clear it up i never said the exhaust tip added performance. All i stated was that it sounds a lot better more

Resolved Question: Supercharger for a 400 Pontiac V8?

I'm trying to find a supercharger for a 400 Pontiac V8 out of a 72 Grand Prix. It's now in a different car. The motor is strong and was recently rebuilt and the supercharger will be the last thing done to it, and honestly is just a maybe at this point. However, I'd like to have a point of reference just in case after the Heads, Headers, Camshaft, Flywheel, and X Pipe for the exhaust on the motor gets taken care of, if I decide I'd like a little more power, what would be a good supercharger for the motor. If someone knows of a decent turbo for it, I'd be open to that as well, but I've heard that older motors usually fair better to be supercharged. If I'm wrong and you know of a proven turbo for the motor, feel free to let me know. Now, keep in mind, for anyone concerned, a few things. A.) The car the motor is currently in is a 1985 Cutlass Supreme B.) The Suspension is getting done first. Before I even begin to look at the motor, the suspension will be up to par with a modern car. Nothing worse than a car with a million billion horsepower, that can't use it properly. (That and it's NOT intended to be a drag car, but actually my take on an American Muscle Touring car if that makes any kind of sense.) C.) The Brakes will be next after the suspension. No use in going fast if you can't slow down right? D.) As stated, the motor will be mechanically sound and have the essentials before adding anything like a supercharger or even a fuel injection system rather than the carb. E.) Finally, I have more patience than money, which was something I kept true with looking for the car. I'm not cutting corners. If it's expensive and I don't have all the cash, then I'll wait until I have enough. It's probably gonna be at least a year before everything I want is done. (I'm looking to time this whole supercharger thing with income tax time.) I'm looking in the $2000-3000 range. If it's slightly more that's fine. Slightly less, that's good too, but nothing too extreme. I don't have 10 grand for a kit but don't want some cheap stuff either. Thank you before hand, and God bless! more

Resolved Question: Why is my sv650s keep stalling when i pull the throttle?

2001 svs 13k miles I read the svrider forum and and they said i can use seafoam and techron cab cleaner and they work like a charm. I also read this on other motorcycle forums. I used the techron and after i used it my bike has started stalling out soon as i pull the throttle. In order to get it to stay running i have to leave the choke up to rpm 3000 rpms and then give it gas to go but it stall stalls until im up to about 4000-6000 rpms and above 45mph. I had the cabs cleaned and reset but it is still having. The guy told me it was because the main jet was larger than the order one. but i read if you get a aftermarket exhaust and filter that has been moded you should go up a size or two on main jet. What else could be the problem please help. more

Resolved Question: At what point would I have to send in my car for ECU programing?

I have a 2005 Subaru WRX. It's almost payed off (8 months left) and I was definitely planning on fixing it up. Lately however I've been toying with the idea of not only fixing it up but throwing in some major performance parts as well. Here's the list of what I would like to add and or replace in the car: Turbo Inter-cooler BOV Manual Boost Controller complete COBB stage 2 (turbo back exhaust with up pipe) Unichip ECU piggyback I realize that is a lot of overhauling and I know the stock ECU is not going to be able to compensate. Not being overly ECU savvy I'm going to have to take the car into a tuning shop to at least get the Unichip tuned for all that stuff. My question is at what point do i need to bring it in to get tuned? In other words, I know the BOV and Unichip piggyback will work fine without tuning but how much of that list can i add before the car actually needs to be tuned. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Chevy Trailblazer '04 Problem?

Trying confirm if I need another engine or is it fixable. To start off I have codes: P0016, P0128 and P0014, in that order. I replaced the variable valve timing solenoid which got rid of SES light. Truck run fine for about 10 minutes. it will then start knocking and lose power, safety mode. creep along at about 10-20 mph. Letting it sit for several hours the knock is gone and drive fine for about 10 minutes again and the cycle continues. Shop couldn' t find the problem but said oil pressure was good. (only took it to one shop so far). Some earlier responses say the bearings, but which ones. Is it possible that flush the motor several times could solve this if they are sticking (rod ). Is it worth replacing the needed parts and hope this is the cause? Or another engine is the way if not fixable. appreciate the help. more
