Open Question: Easy way to test whether cracked screen on iPod Touch is serious or not?

Do you know of easy tests you can do on an iPod Touch screen to make sure that it is still functional? I am considering buying a used one but it has a cracked screen. Seller says its ok, but I'm skeptical. Anyone have experience with using a damaged, multi-touch screen, like the ones on the Touch or the iPhone? Thanks. more

Open Question: Why isn't my Call of Duty United Offensive Expansion Pac working on my computer?

I had gotten CODUO in Feb 2010, and i can't seem to get it to work.I have already gotten everything loaded,all the discs, and it then it loads to the mini-screen.When i click single player, it says CoDOUSP.exe has stopped working. I don't understand why it won't play.Nothing i click, Multi-player, all that and it will say the same thing.Could it be my videocard?I would really like to play. -Kiran more

Resolved Question: What do you imagine an average home computer will be like 150 years from now?

I don't think we will have monitors any more, I think they'll still be a screen of sorts but it'll instead be a bed of nanobot shape shifters that recreate physical objects/matter in 3D. for example if you was speaking to a friend via the computer their face will stick out from the bed of nanobots and you would be able to touch it with it having the same texture as the real thing. Another good example would be if you was looking at car's, a miniature but lifelike 3D model would appear on the bed of nanobots. I think this would be an amazing tool for designers in the future as you could manipulate these nanobots into anything conceivable so long as it fits within the boundaries of the bed. So if you re-created a gun, you could fire it like a normal gun but the bullet wouldn't pass the boundary. As a tool I imagine computers would be limitless in it's ability to calculate. If we still have websites, I see them as being like multi coloured 3D blocks the rise from the bed of nanobots, each box being a website with more boxes that are the website pages that can contain 3D items, scenes, and text of course. The best example of this now would be a tag cloud but a physical 3D one. This would be so cool, with so many advantages and limitless possibilities. Open Question: Should I wait for iPad 2.0?

The iPad looks pretty amazing. I don't own a laptop or an iPod Touch (Was going to get the iPod Touch 3G but I prefer a bigger screen and I like touch screen interfaces). I think I'll wait until the glitches have been fixed, improvements made and more features added like multi-tasking and maybe a camera. The iPad is the only gift I actually want for my birthday for once. I haven't had a birthday present in 2 years, because I have asked for no gifts but just a fun day with my family and friends. I did a little research, the iPod Touch 1G, 2G etc. & the iPhone 1G, 2G, 3G, 3GS etc. all seem to be released exactly one year after the other, around the same month usually. Meaning that it's likely that the iPad 2G will come out around Spring/Autum 2011 next year or so. So for my birthday this year, should I continue asking for nothing and just wait until next year? Or should I ask for an Apple Gift Card or money that I can use to purchase for the iPad 2G when it comes out? Thanks for answering. more

Well I don't want to pre-order the iPad just yet, I want to wait until the glitches have improved for the 2nd generation and who knows, it's probably likely the 2G will have a camera and maybe a multi-tasking function. My birthday is in August this year. I was hoping to get the iPod Touch 3G but I guessed that seeing as the iPad was just released, I like the bigger screen better and the iBooks and iWorks store. And I don't own a laptop or netbook, but call me weird I prefer touch screen interfaces than physical ones now, I guess I'm just used to it. I did some research and all the devices like iPod Touch 1G, 2G etc. and the iPhone 1G, 3G, 3GS etc. seem to released one year after the other. So I'm guessing that the iPad 2G is likely to come out next year. This is the only thing I want for my birthday. So I'm wondering, how could I wait patiently for a year in the meantime and for my birthday in August, should I ask for money that I will be able to use to purchase the iPad 2.0 or an Apple Gift Card? I don't want anything else for my birthday but the iPad, but I don't want to get the iPad 1st generation so I'm going to have to wait until next year. (I'm not a spoiled or materialistic person, I didn't have anything for my birthday last year or the year before because all I wanted was to spend the day with my family and friends). Open Question: Will starting my computer with a boot disk will I lose any of my data?

I have windows xp professional on an IBM Thinkpad and when I try to start my computer it shows the Intel start-up screen but instead of then switching to the windows start-up, the screen just goes blank. When I tried to start in safe mode, it stops loading at: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\ WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\isapnp.sys So I thought that I could try booting my computer from another device or from a boot disk but I wasn't sure if that would erase the data that I have on my computer. If anyone could tell me or if you know of a better way to fix it then please let me know.Also where can I get a boot disk? My computer was a school issued computer so I was not given any kind of disk. more

I did not go to see Avatar. I generally do not like all these electronic and computer enhanced movies. im not really into 3d neither.going to the movies is not really a pleasant experience for me. first it costs a good 50.00 dollars for a weekend movie with popcorn and soda.[for couple] the screens are minuscule and i find the whole experience generic and precise for the owners. i went to the theater the other day and had popcorn. i was informed that there was a counter with napkins and a flavored oil to put on my popcorn. i believe the popcorn was 8 dollars and the soda 3.50.all the employees appeared bored and the whole atmosphere dull. my father was unable to go to the movies because the town did not have a theater and i doubt that he could have afforded it. i gather from film clips..movie going was at one time exciting and quite enjoyable.i find it hard to believe that people sat through 2 movies.was there intermission? .ive never had popcorn with butter. did they use real butter? were they big screens or similar to the screens today? did they have any goodies to eat that you don't see today? could you sit through a show more than once? is there anywhere someone can get the feel of movie houses of yesterday with a double movie. was it really that exciting cuz my experiences now is as boring as watching these 'every tom,dick and harry winning an academy award '. even the academy awards is a dull experience! i think i'm old school with movies and even my mother does not understand why i would want to watch 'one of those old things'.did people dress up for the movies?did all theaters have balconys?..that must have been fun. ps. they dont use containers anymore for the popcorn and those bags are thin and rip and ..terrible if adding warm flavored oil. more

Voting Question: Have any Australians bought Legend of the Seeker Season 1 DVD? Any problems playing the region 1 DVDs here?

Does anyone know if the Legend of the Seeker DVD for region 1 will work outside the US? I live in Australia, and was more than willing to buy the DVD when it became available in my country, but so far I haven’t heard any news of this happening. Now that I have heard that season 3 is in danger of not being renewed, I was considering just buying it off Amazon to increase sales, but will be very disappointed if I am unable to play it. I know some DVDs from overseas will work in multi-region players, but I have had some that will not. Was wondering if anyone outside the US (esp in Oz) has purchased the DVD and that it works OK? I can’t even comprehend how such a great quality show may not make it to a third season when there are so many rubbish shows that seems to grace our screens every week. more

Open Question: multi tasking with two monitors?

Hoooookay, so I just bought a new monitor, it's very pretty. I still want to use my other monitor, which I am doing right now (i have them both hooked up to the same video card, one HDMI and the other VGA) It is currently working pretty well, except a few things that I'm not that happy about. What I want to do is to be able to multitask, which IS very possible with normal windows applications, but does not seem inherently possible with the two things that I want to do, Gaming and Youtube. I can put a youtube video on my smaller screen and maximize it, but as soon as I come back to my main screen and click somewhere it puts the youtube screen back to small. Similarly, when I have a website that I'm trying to read in my small Monitor, and say for example I die on counterstrike or LoL on my main, I may want to change the screen on the small monitor, but the mouse seems to be bound to the game (even in windowed mode.) Is there a workaround that anyone may know of to solve either (or hopefully both) of these problems?* i have of course read any pertaining manuals, but this is a software problem really, and being as that a monitor is a one time purchase product i do not have a service provider. more

i want to make a touchscreen from scratch as a project at home. ive done some research on capacitive touch screens and the actual setup doesn't seem too difficult although the processor is complex and the software is needed. it has to be capacitive as i want the multi-touch capabilities. it would be transparent as im using it without a screen. i want to try and create it as well as the custom software but i don't know were to start. can anyone help?? thanks in advancei know its possible as i heard of a 17 year old who had made one for a science project and fairly cheaply. more

So, I have Verizon and I have the Samsung Rogue. I hate this phone with every fiber of my being it is always freezing up, and has absolutely no multi tasking power. I would like to be able to listen to music and text at the same time. For a new phone, I have no real preference, though I do like touch screen phones. After inserting the blu ray disc and going through the previews, I get to the intro screen but there is no title selection menu that usually appears with the movie intro screen. Can't figure out how to start the movie! Someone told me that I need to contact the manufacturer for my LG Drive for a Firmware Update. Just talked with LG and there is No Firmware Update for the model I have. Uninstalled/Reinstalled the device drivers and still no success! LG then told me to contact Cyberlink. Voting Question: Need a new laptop, need opinions on what to get for what I want?

I am not computer illiterate, but I'm by no means an expert either so I need the help of folk who know what they are talking about. My Compaq V3000 died a few days ago, it was a problem child and I don't want to go through the crazy over heating, the random shut downs, the boot problems, or the blue screen of death every day ever again. I want a PC available from regular stores in Australia, JB HI-FI, Harvey Norman, Dell online, or WOW Sight and Sound would be ideal. I know every laptop has issues but I'd like one more reliable than my Compaq. I want to be able to majorly multi task on it, I use Word a LOT (uni, ugh), I surf up to 7 web pages at once, I listen to music, play videos, and play quite a few games (my new laptop HAS to be able to run Assassin's Creed flawlessly lol). I'm willing to go to $2500AUS, so I'm looking for the best I can do under that (I know, I know... but I'm a poor uni student stretching the budget to get a loan even for that much money). I don't care too much about battery life, I use it for long periods of time so power cable overheating is not something I can stand, I would LOVE keypad backlighting because I type in the dark a lot. I'd like it to look attractive, colors are always nice but the normal stylish black or white cover is cool too so long as it's stylish. My last laptop had I think 60GB or maybe 90BG (yes, I should remember but I can't, sorry!) and I'd like more than that this time. An international team led by researchers from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) has discovered that certain variants in the Latrophilin 3 gene (LPHN3) act as a trigger for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The neuropsychological disorder is prevalent in the population, affecting 5 to 10 percent of U.S. children and adults - placing an enormous health burden on individual patients and society as a whole. The findings were published February 16 in the early online edition of the journal Molecular Psychiatry. "It is gratifying to see how genomics research is revealing new insights about ADHD, a disorder with wide-reaching implications," said NHGRI Director Eric Green, M.D., Ph.D. "This study reflects some of the exciting progress in ADHD research that could one day lead to clinical benefits for those affected by the condition." Variants in as many as hundreds of genes may predispose an individual to ADHD, though previous research has revealed the role of only a few genes. LPHN3 is involved in neuron signaling and is expressed in the brain's mesolimbic system, an area associated with behavioral response and ADHD. The multi-phase collaborative study involved screening the DNA of individuals affected with ADHD and unaffected controls. In all, the researchers studied 6,360 people in 1,410 families, approximately half of whom are affected by ADHD. This study illustrates how studying certain patient groups can help scientists learn more about the population at large. In the initial phase, the researchers studied multigenerational families from an isolated community in Antioquia, Colombia. People in this region, known as the Paisa population, have a relatively high prevalence of ADHD; data from 18 large Paisa families with ADHD symptoms were analyzed in the first stage of the study. The study of Paisa families identified a specific region of the LPHN3 gene that was associated with symptoms of ADHD. Painstaking fine mapping of the DNA in this gene region more precisely pinpointed potential variants in the DNA code that may bealtering the gene's function. To validate their findings, the researchers then replicated the study in samples from Colombia, Germany, Norway, Spain and two U.S. populations. "Our efforts revealed important functional sequences within the LPHN3 gene that may be important in neurologic health," said senior author Maximilian Muenke, M.D., chief of NHGRI's Medical Genetics Branch. "This study is a critical step to better understanding this disease and creates a new opportunity for developing novel and more personalized treatments for patients." more
