Open Question: Wireless Desktop Problem with MMO?

I just got a Cisco Dual-Band Wireless-N PCI Adapter, which works just fine with web browsing and instant chat, but for some reason whenever I launch DDO (It's a standard MMORPG if you are not familiar with it) I lose connection. But, the strange thing is that when I launch it, I can force it to connect and it loads partially, but after I log on, as soon as I force it on, it turns off. I open up my wireless settings and the router disappears. I am running Windows 7 Pro, and my anti-virus is AVG Free edition. My signal strength according to the OS is "low"(2 out of 5 bars). Those are the only things I might see wrong with it. more

Open Question: Spiritually speaking, is my computer haunted or bedeviled?

I am asking this here because I am on R&S more than the other sections put together, and I suspect will get more answers here. But this is, for me, a serious problem. I am now on a different computer than the one I usually use. My computer is to the point it is taking almost half an hour to load one new tab in Mozilla Firefox. I have one window with four tabs open. According to Windows Task Manager, Firefox is using close to 500,000K memory and it seems to be climbing as I am using it, though slowly. This computer, a laptop, is roughly equivalent to that one, both dual core processors, 2 gig of ram, Windows XP Pro. But this one has six Firefox windows open with roughly 60 to70 tabs open altogether and is using only about 150,000K. This one is loading new windows and tabs as quickly as mine used to do just a few weeks ago. Over the last few weeks I have repeatedly cleared all private data, rebooted, ran about a dozen different virus scans, everything I can think of doing. I am getting tired of it taking so long and at times being unable to edit an answer I have promised I would. Anything else I can try? If it is reinstall Firefox, is there anywhere to get version 3.0 still? I do NOT want 3.5 or whatever the newest is. Thanks! No, no porn at all.All a professional would do is to wipe the hard drive and put it back to factory original, except it came with Windows Media. I do not want to go through the hassle of reinstalling about two hundred programs and setting it back up the way I want it. That is why my friends and family come to me with their problems. I actually try to find the problem, not just wipe and forget. At least I have backups of files, but my sister lost one of a kind important photographs and other filses and the "professional" did not warn her or ask her, even after she told him she had things on the hard drive she did not want to lose.Dumped cache at least a dozen times, defragged even though it was already at 99%. more

Open Question: Carnegie Mellon PhD vs Max Planck the trade offs involved, is it worth it in the long run?

I require more of an experts opinion on choices and some guidance.I realize as individuals we sometimes settle for less optimal choices because they are reversible, i want to be aware of that when i do end up making this one. Please take a look at the following. I applied to a couple of different places for a PhD in Engineering and so far was able to get into Carnegie Mellon University USA and Max Planck Institute Germany. Both are offering PhD in Engineering. Dual Phd Carnegie Mellon/Portugal Program Pros 1-I get a PhD in Engineering from CMU and Lisbon. 2-I get an American education while being able to do the things I love living in europe, travelling. 3-It offers me a bigger platform to experience the things i really enjoy like reading, writing, fine arts.Since the language is english. 4-I would be able to develope dual networks both in Carnegie Mellon and in Europe and diversity of environment. 5-I can always take up more art classes etc as a minor so specializing in Engineering yet going for something like business or policy making etc as a minor. Cons 1-Low stipend 2-Longer course around 4-5 years. 3-Would have to take classes and quals etc 4-Being a pakistani and especially with the really bad economy and everything will have to go for citizenship after the five years or in my case depending on where my spouse would be. 5-No stability meaning 1 year in portugal, 2 years in CMU then 2 years in Portugal.Meaning would involve shifting around(dont know if thats a con yet since I would confirm if i can minimize the number of shifts). 6-May turn out to be more stressful since the american education system is different then europe or may turn out to be the best of both worlds(dont know yet, since half is in portugal). Max Planck Institute Germany Pros 1-Good stipend. 2-Shorter course i guess around 4 years. 3-No courses or quals directly research work etc. 4-Can get my Permanenet residency during my PhD since Ive already stayed here for some time.Citizenship means 2-3 years after my PR.So basically in 4-6 years starting from today I can also get my German Citizenship. Cons 1-Its germany and since my german is not that good that means limited opportunities, though i will develope a better sense of it in the years to come but loose out on all the perks that a bigger english speaking university offers, like wanting to write or attend arts classes and try out different things out of curiousity. 2-Will not have the ivy league education that CMU offers. 3-Will not have the same level of networks or access to resources. 4-Rigid and less diversity of environments. personally i am a dreamer and an idealist and a non conformist. I have a tendency to see life through rose coloured glasses. So right now the thing is i see both sides of the tradeoff, unfortunately i dont know which ones i can live with. Do you have any suggestions on what could be a good idea or a better option?I am grateful and look forward to your response. more

Open Question: Which Mac should I keep: the iMac G5 or the Power Mac G5?

I own three working macs; an iMac G3 (CRT) an iMac G5, and a Power Mac G5, a PC, and a bunch of broken computers. My mom told me that I had to get rid of one of them, and I need the money, so I agree with her. I have decided to get rid of either the Power Mac or the iMac G5, but I cannot decide which. The iMac is a Single core 1.6GHz G5 PPC processor 80GB Hard Drive 1GB PC3200 RAM Mashita Slot-Load Superdrive Good Speakers Good Microphone The Power Mac G5 has a Dual-Core 1.8 GHz G5 PPC Processor 200GB Hard Drive 2GB PC3200 RAM Mashita Tray Load Superdrive Terrible Speakers No Microphone I am considering getting a MacBook Pro, so I really don't need either of them, but I want to keep at least one. My friend gave me the PowerMac, and he seems to think that selling it would be illegal, (He's bonkers) and I really don't want to disappoint him. The iMac I built from scratch, I got the parts online and built it. It holds a special place in my heart. I can't decide. Please help! more

Open Question: Ok 2 builds off dell's website studio 16 vs 17. Which is best for games/movies/rendering in 3dsmax?

Studio 16 PROCESSOR: Intel® Core™ i5-540M (2.53GHz, 4Threads, turbo boost up to 3.06Ghz, 3M cache) HD DISPLAY:Edge-to-Edge FHD Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP MEMORY:4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 HARD DRIVE:500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive VIDEO CARD:ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 4670 – 1GB Studio 17 PROCESSOR: Intel® Core™ i5-520M 2.40GHz (2.93Ghz Turbo Mode, 3M cache) HD DISPLAY:17.3” HD+ (900p) LED Display with TrueLife™, Camera & MultiTouch MEMORY:4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz HARD DRIVE:500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive VIDEO CARD:ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650, 1GB with TV Tuner Studio 16>> pros>>faster processor, 1080p screen cons>>worse graphics card, 1" smaller screen Studio 17>> pros>>better graphics card, bigger screen, its a touch screen cons>>worse processor, only 900p (its like 1600-900 instead of 1920-1080, which on a larger screen could be a downside....) So the studio 16's higher resolution has a smaller graphics card. The studio 17's bigger screen size has a lower resolution. The studio 17 has a slightly smaller processor. The touch screen could be a nice touch for modeling in 3ds max, but the lower resolution is a real killer. The price of these two laptops are basically identical but I cant decide which of the trade offs is worth it. There is no win-win option for these particular laptops and better ones are out of my price budget. The TV tuner on the 17 inch isn't applicable to me it just comes with it ><. I have a 24" monitor at home and i do notice the difference between 1600-900 and 1920-1200, I don't know if the difference will be as noticeable on a smaller 17" screen but I want to keep it in mind. Thanks of reading the wall of text>> so which of the trade offs will serve me best, and why? more

Voting Question: Why does Apple blatantly overcharge its customers?

Just surfing around the Mac online store the other day, it's completely obvious that Apple robs its customers. Going through several customization options (which are extremely limited I might add) their prices for selecting a higher end CPU are just outrageous. Keep in mind these units are already overpriced to begin with. Going from a Core i5 750 on an iMac to a Core i7 860 is $200 more, when in fact the 860 is only $80 more than the 750. Looking at a Macbook pro, they want an extra $400 for a 3.06 ghz dual core as opposed to a 2.8, in reality probably a $100-150 at most Is it because Apple has a monopoly on Mac computers since no one else produces them so they have the freedom to price gouge? These are just 2 of several examples more

Resolved Question: what graphics card is better?

k well.. I play world of warcraft and my lag isn't to bad but i do hit about 10-20 FPS in Dalaran. but i have 2 graphics cards i can use: Radeon HD 2400 Pro DDR2 256MB memory at 800MHz "not sure on bit". The other one I have is a, "Galaxy - GeForce 9500 1GB 128BIT DDR2 memory." on CPU-Z it says the nvidia card is running at 450 MHz memory speed "i have it OC'd a bit using EVGA precision" and the core is at 655MHz and shaders is at 1550MHz. I also run dual screens. they both can run them. my system stats on CPU-Z are: CPU Arch : 1 CPU - 2 Cores - 2 Threads CPU PSN : AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ CPU EXT : MMX(+), 3DNow!(+), SSE (1, 2, 3), x86-64, AMD-V CPUID : F.B.2 / Extended : F.4B CPU Cache : L1 : 2 x 64 / 2 x 64 KB - L2 : 2 x 512 KB Core : Windsor (90 nm) / Stepping : BH-F2 Freq : 2169.84 MHz (216.98 * 10) MB Brand : Asus MB Model : M2N-MX SE Plus NB : NVIDIA MCP61 rev A3 SB : NVIDIA MCP61 rev A2 GPU Type : NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT GPU Clocks : Core 655 MHz / RAM 450 MHz DirectX Version : 9.0c RAM : 4096 MB DDR2 Dual Channel RAM Speed : 361.6 MHz (Unknown) @ 5-5-5-15 Slot 1 : 2048MB (5300) Slot 1 Manufacturer : Kingston Slot 2 : 2048MB (5300) Slot 2 Manufacturer : Kingston im not sure if any of that will effect what card would run better on my system but thought i may as well. This computer is pretty much a "home made" type kind of threw it together with what i had so not really sure what interferes with each other. But im just trying to get my FPS a bit higher in Dalaran. in Ironforge i usually get 30-60 FPS but around 30 when im in the AH or in the more populated areas in raids my FPS is just all over the place from 10-60 but in 5-man's or arena im perfectly fine and sit around 45-60 FPS. my graphics settings really don't effect my FPS either except for the shadow quality. i can turn them all up still be around same FPS "excluding shadow quality, never have that up". thanks. more

Resolved Question: Selling a computer, what's a fair price for it?

System Specs: Intel Pentium D 631 3GHZ w/ Hyper-threading 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 (Just upgraded about a month ago, so the ram is fairly new.) (2) Hard drives- Used but newer 200GB EIDE and a Used but newer 160GB EIDE Hard drive for storage (Not original hard drives) Media Card Reader: Reads MS, MS Pro, SD, CF, MMC, SM, Microdrive 3xUSB Ports in Front, 4x USB Ports in back, 7x total (All USB 2.0 High Speed) DVD-RW/CD-RW Integrated 10/100 Wired Ethernet New 430 Watt power supply, just replaced last year. Upgraded Graphics Card: XFX Ati Radeon HD 4650 w/ 1GB GDDR2 discrete video memory. Only a month old at that. Has Dual DVI Output, DVI-VGA Adapter Included (This card was just bought about a month ago, so it don't have much use on it) Driver CD Included as well. Also has a manufacturer's lifetime warranty on it. Wired Keyboard and Mouse Included 15" LCD Monitor and speakers included. I also am including CD's with Office '07 and other software such as Tuneup Utilities 2010, AVG Internet Security 9.0, Power ISO 4.6 DVD-CD Burning Software, Winrar Pro, and others. Please keep in mind that Amazon is selling the 512MB version of my graphics card for about $64 here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=xfx+ati+radeon+hd+4650&x=0&y=0 Mine is the 1024MB version. What's a fair price for it, someone wants to buy it, but I'm not sure how much to ask for it. I know it's an older system, but it still runs great. Oh and should I put 32-bit or 64-bit Win 7 on it? I guess the motherboard can go to 4GB system ram so I figure 64-bit so it'll be ready. Thanks. The Hard drives are IDE not SATA more

Resolved Question: Should I use photoshop or gimp after I switched to a mac?

I've always used gimp since I've been into graphics arts. Back when I had a pc, I would use gimp to make some cool signatures for people on forums using a lot of different gimp signature tutorials. However, I recently got a MacBook Pro and when I downloaded the mac version of gimp, I found myself on an alien planet which was confusing, annoying and it made me not want to do signature creation anymore. However, one of my friends offered to let me try their photoshop cs4 and I've always been dedicated to gimp so I don't know whether I should use it or not. My question is: Are there a decent amount of signature tutorials for photoshop as there are for gimp? Also, is there someway (besides dual booting) of using gimp on my mac without it being the terrible X11 version? Thanks for all who answer! As I said before, my friend is letting me borrow it to see if I'll like it or not. No, I'm not paying for it... at least not yet more
