Open Question: Should I invest in a MacBook Pro or other laptop?
I need a new computer for college and I was trying to decide what would be the better investment in the long run between a MacBook Pro with the following specifications:
* 2.4GHz Intel Core i5
* 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
* 320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
* NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and Intel HD Graphics
* SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
* MacBook Pro 15-inch Glossy Widescreen Display
* Built-in iSight webcam and omnidirectional microphone
* Built-in high-speed AirPort Extreme wireless LAN card (802.11b/g/n)
* Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
* Accessory kit
or something like an HP dv7tse with these specifications:
* Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
* System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
* Intel Core i5-540M Dual Core processor (2.53GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.06GHz
* 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA]
* 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)edit
* 640GB 7200RPM Dual Hard Drive (320GB x 2) with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
* 17.3" diagonal HD+ High-Definition HP LED BrightView Widescreen Display (1600 x 900)
* Lightscribe Blu-ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
* HP TrueVision Webcam and Fingerprint Reader
* Intel Wireless-N Card
I'm an architecture student and I want a laptop that will last me for at least four years of undergraduate study. I know for sure that we will be using Adobe CS5 and a few different CAD programs so I want something that will run those programs smoothly without any performance issues.
I've heard a lot of good things about Macs but I've never owned one before and if I'm going to make such a large investment, I want to know that this laptop will last me for all the time that I need it. If I got the MacBook Pro, I also planned on dual booting both Mac OS 10.6 and Windows 7 because the copy of CS5 that I have is the Windows version, along with every other software program that I have.
The MacBook Pro with an educational discount would cost $1699 (+$180 for a copy of Windows 7). The HP with the educational discount would be $1258.
Based on this information, which one would be the better investment in the long run?Arko Vigu-
1. I consider a computer an investment in my education. I know that the machine itself will depreciate in value over time, but some things hold their value better than others which is why I was hoping to get some input from people who have owned either one or both types of these machines.
2. I don't recall making the argument that a Mac is better for creative design work. I merely listed the programs that I knew we were going to be using.
3/4. I don't think that a person who asks a legitimate question in a polite and articulate manner is being a smart ass. I think the real smart ass is the person who feels the need to brag about their own abilities and "superior" educational achievements when answering a simple question. Oh, and just so you know, I'm a college student already, so get off your high horse and quit pretending that you know so much more about college life than me and everyone else.
moreOpen Question: Looking for help buying new computer. Any recommendations < $400.00?
I have considered the followings system on geeks.com:
Features/Specifications:
* HP Workstation xw8200 Dual Xeon 3.2 GHz Tower System
* General Features:
* Microsoft Windows XP Pro pre-installed w/COA
* Dual Intel Xeon 3.2 GHz processors
* Dual Xeon Motherboard
* Intel E7525 chipset (supports an 800 MHz Front Side Bus)
* 4 GB RAM (supports up to 16 GB max.)
* Two (2) 160 GB SATA hard drives
* DVD±RW drive
* No floppy drive
* Video card
* Integrated AC'97 audio
* Integrated Intel Pro MT Gigabit LAN
* RAID supported (Requires 2 identical hard drives - speeds, capacity & interface)
* Power Supply: 100 - 240V 50/60 Hz
It is ~ 350 dollars. Want something that will play decent games, not be slow, and be able to run some decent computing. It is just for a home desktop system with nothing like cad or modeling to be done on it. Is this too much do you think? Recommendations (must be under $400.00 ... preferably $300.00) are welcome.
thanks, Dave

Hello, I just recently purchased an asus g73jh-rbb0x (or whatever lol) and I LOVE it!! but I just started school and I have microsoft word for mac and the macboook pro install disks for 10.5.2. so i want to dual boot osx on my pc with windows 7 home premium. I know it's "illegal" but I still want to try it so I don't have to buy microsoft office for pc. any help from someone who knows what they're talking about and/or a link to a site that could would be appreciated.
thanks
moreOpen Question: Snow Leapord.dmg from Windows to Mac OS X?
I have recently purchased a used MacBook Pro 5,5 running Mac OS X Version 10.6.3 from ebay. A first for me! Unfortunately, the only flaw was that the seller never sent the original install cd and now im working under one of the guest accounts with limited resources. (I can't even perform software updates, let alone program installations!!). The previous owner sort of disappeared, as i am still awaiting for his reply to my numerous emails.
I was told by an Apple representative that I would need to get Snow Leopard in order to work around it or reset the admin password.
I have downloaded Snow Leopard as a torrent .dmg file on my windows pc. The file is slightly over 6GB!! That's not going to fit on a CD, maybe on a 8.5GB dual-layer DVD. But it will most likely fit on a flash drive. Either option will do but because I have to purchase either the dvds or pen drive I would prefer a flash drive.
Can I just copy the .dmg file from my pc onto a flash drive, disconnect it. Connect the flash drive to the MacBook Pro and install Snow Leopard?? Do I need to do any additional imaging/program altering?? I was told the Finder feature will act as a PowerISO for Macs, is that right?
Thanks in advance!! =)TMI, I guess...rephrased: I have a .dmg file for Mac on my PC and need to transfer it to my MacBook. Can I use a flash drive to make the transfer w/o ruinin it? Does Finder work as an image mounting prog. as I was told? My intention was not to ask for a tutorial/user guide. A simple yes or no would have suffice. Yes, pirating is illegal, we all know. Imagined this was a comp. club with like-minds looking to share/learn industry secrets.
Speaking of illegal, I love ur bias effort on a $50 game - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AswcQLY4e74OBZBJuJb_Jzbty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100831051414AAn85HQ&show=7#profile-info-nkAVgdRnaa
Either way, thanks I guess. I was able to create a new, 2nd, admin account and delete the previous through the command prompt. Saved me time & $$. Esp. since Apple told me $45, Best Buy said $30, and u told me $129!!?!? Was I to pay any price for a fix I am unsure will resolve my prob? I am glad there are other knowledgeable techs WITH superb ppl skills.

moreResolved Question: What should I do about a new upgrade to my workstation?
Im about to buy a new graphics card since I have 25% off any PNY GTX400 product. Id like to know which would be a better buy. A GTX 480 or a GTX 470 with a 60gb SSD. These will cost close to the same. I know the 480 averages about 10-15 fps faster than the 470, but im curious to see if I would get a faster overall computer with the SSD. Ive been building computers for about 6 years now and im stumped on what I should do. Anyone who has a similar setup please feel free to answer.
Heres my current specs:
AMD Phenom IIx4 955 BE at 3.8GHz
4GB of DDR2 ram at 1600mhz
ATI XFX XXX 4870

1x Hitachi TB drive
1x 320gb Seagate boot drive
Windows 7 Pro 64bit. Windows XP dual boot. Ubuntu 10.4 dual boot.
Any help would be much appreciative.
On that note, i want semi to professional answers. I want no fan-boy wars going on either. Were all PC gamers/builders so lets keep it clean. Thank-youHere is the SSD id like to get.

moreVoting Question: I need help finding a motherboard?
I just purchased a computer with an amd 2600 and have come to find i cant upgrade past 2 ghz. What would be the cheapest way to maintain my AGP video card and sata HD? I wouldnt mind an extra pci-e for later use. Basically I'm trying to run Starcraft 2 steadily. A core i5 or i7, even phenom ii x2 545 is supposed to be great for this game. The minimum reqiurements are as follows. It being an RTS game it needs much better CPU. PC Requirements
PC Minimum System Requirements*:
Windows® XP/Windows Vista®/Windows® 7 (Updated with the latest Service Packs) with DirectX® 9.0c
2.6 GHz Pentium® IV or equivalent AMD Athlon® processor
128 MB PCIe NVIDIA® GeForce® 6600 GT or ATI Radeon® 9800 PRO video card or better
12 GB available HD space
1 GB RAM (1.5 GB required for Windows Vista®/Windows® 7 users)
DVD-ROM drive
Broadband Internet connection
1024X720 minimum display resolution
PC Recommended Specifications:
Windows Vista®/Windows® 7
Dual Core 2.4Ghz Processor
2 GB RAM
512 MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 GTX or ATI Radeon® HD 3870 or better
*Note: Due to potential programming changes, the Minimum System Requirements for this game may change over time.

moreResolved Question: Help finding the right computer?
Hi, I am looking to buy a new computer, preferably desktop because of more power for cheaper. I will need this computer to run Adobe CS4 programs. (After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop etc.) and edit video in HD. I will need it to also run programs like 3D Max ~2009. I don't need dual displays or anything like that. I just want the computer to run those programs well. I have a laptop for my other multi-media.
Please keep it on a budget of lets say under $900.00
Thanks! please include a link to the info and specs of the computer, i would prefer to buy from a store I can pick it up at (Best Buy,Office Max, etc), and no DIY's please!

moreVoting Question: sg tcp optimizer ruined my connection?
I've used the sg tcp optimizer (http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php) in the hope that i might increase my speed but instead it ruined it by making it awefully slow. My speed used to be 500-700 kb but now its limited to 50kb. Also, while using the optimizer, i've been following a guide for it :
Connection speed: This should be set to your max download rate. So if you download at 256 kilobytes a second, it would be 2 Mbps.
Here is a list of speeds:
128 KBps = 1 Mbps
256 KBps = 2 Mbps
512 KBps = 4 Mbps
1 MBps = 8 Mbps
2 MBps = 16 Mbps
The calculation to find your exact speed is you take your highest download speed you've ever reached and multiply it times 8(assuming it was in megabytes) and select the closest number on the slider. You can also use this site to help you with any bit/byte calculations. http://www.matisse.net/bitcalc/
Now, select your network adapter.
You're MTU should be set as high as your ISP can give you, and you can find your MTU by using the MTU/Latency tab. The PPPoE setting will not be explained in this guide due to the rarity of use.
TCP Window Auto-Tuning should be set to disabled because windows tends to make it TOO large, and can cause some bandwidth slow down.
Congestion Control should be set to CTCP.
TCP Chimney is set by depending on your NIC. If you run a non-dedicated(attached to motherboard NIC) then this should be set to disabled. If you run a dedicated NIC like the Killer Xeno Pro or any other NIC attached via USB or PCI then set this to enabled.
Receive-Side Scaling State should be set by how many cores(CPU cores) you have. If you are running a Single core processor then this should be disabled, but if you run a dual, triple, quad, or hexa core then set this to enabled.
DCA should be left at Auto due to not many people knowing if their systems supports DCA(most multi-core systems do, you can test this on your own.)
NetDMA can be enabled to take advantage of Direct Memory Access.
TTL should be set to 64, but if you notice a loss of connection or increase disconnects set this to 128.
ECN should be disabled due to game instability ex. Battle Field Bad Company 2.
Windows Scaling heuristics should be disabled unless you want all these settings to be set back to default.
Checksum offloading is just like Chimney offload, non-dedicated = disabled and dedicated = enabled.
Windows Scaling should be ticked to allow website to use high TCP window sizes if the website supports it(helps with TCP window auto-tuning disabled)
Timestamps should be disabled to free up some bandwidth.
Now for the Advanced tab.
You can leave the IE optimizations alone or play with them if you want. Best to set them to your max connections per server. There is a site to help you find your max, but I forgot the link.
The host priorities should be set accordingly.
Local = 4
Host = 5
Dns = 6
Netbt = 7
SynAttackProtect should be set to disabled to stop any internet checks(can cause slow downs). Leave on if you feel paranoid about the internet.
TCP Max Data Retransmissions is best set to 7. I personally use a low value of 1 because I have a good computer and ISP.(no packet loss)
Large System Cache can be enabled if you have a lot of RAM(random access memory). If you have less than 4 gigs then leave this to disabled.
Size should be set accordingly:
Default = Good for average internet user.
Balanced = Average user with slight LAN use.
Optimized = Lots of LAN use(local file transfer) and heavy internet use like torrents.
QoS should be set to 0 AT ALL TIMES! This setting can heavily hurt your games if set above 1, due to it's trying to control bandwidth.
Going to skip DNS errors because they are not needed to be changed,
Gaming tweaks:
TCP Ack Frequency is best left at default, though some users like it at 1, I've noticed that MW2 and internet browsing perform better at a value of 2.
TCP No Delay should be enabled to allow for instant transmission of TCP packets.
TCP Del Ack Ticks shouldn't be messed with unless you don't want TCP No Delay on.
Dynamic ports can be left alone. They are fine at default.
Is there anyway to return my speeds to normal? My computer specs: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz, 2.00gb RAM

OK, I'm an idiot. I've read so many posts...I'm more confused now then ever.
I know my G5 can't handle AVCHD. I've read that several times. HD is in the AVCHD format right? Yet, I still need to produce crisp videos. Will I have to go out and buy a new computer for HD? I want 1440-1080 resolution. All I need to do is shoot myself playing guitar and singing, with good external mics into the camcorder and upload it to YouTube. I'll use the XLR-BP Pro XLR Adapter for my mics, so I'll need a camcorder with a stereo 1/8" input for audio. Any idea for a camcorder around $700.00?
I didn't know who to ask this question too. Came across this page and figured I'd ask away.
Thanks for any answer, Ron

moreResolved Question: ATI Radeon 2400 Pro vs. ATI Radeon HD 4250?
Recently I fried my GeForce 8800 GT for no apparent reason. I only have a few options left now until I can purchase a new GPU. I would like to know which of the two GPU's, ATI Radeon 2400 Pro or onboard ATI Radeon HD 4250, would be better for gaming.
I don't know that much about graphic cards so I need some one's opinion on this matter. I do know they both can barely play games but I would like to at least continue playing Starcraft 2, possibly on low settings. I am leaning towards trying my 2400 Pro for dual monitors.
Any information is appreciated.

8-Cell Lithium-Ion batterySorry, I never asked a question! Is this laptop anygood? Most of them have bad reviews bcuz the operating system corrupted which was windows vista 64bit, but this one comes with windows 7. This is an entertainment laptop, but I am NOT A GAMER AT ALL! this unit will be used for school work, Photoshop, power point presentation, and web surfing. Users also had problems with the fan and the computer overheating... Sorry for this post being sooooo long, but is this a good buy? Btw, it is factory refurbished, not by HP , but by a local tech team, and is $445 flat, no shipping charge or tax. What do u think?It has a 30 day warranty. Do you think it is a good buy? or can you recommend what would be a good computer for Photoshop, college work, power points, and websurfing?
