Voting Question: Ubuntu install leads to a black screen with a blinking underscore on the top left corner of my screen!?

I can't install Ubuntu at all. I tried both the regular and non-graphical text versions. They both lead to the same thing. I would try a disk check but that too leads to the black screen. Even the Live CD does it too. Apparently Ubuntu will work I just cant get passed the installer. I installed it with Wubi successfully and it worked just fine. I played on it or a while, but I would like Ubuntu to be my primary OP. Is there any way to fix this or make Ubuntu my primary by replacing windows with it some how? Voting Question: Is this a good build for a PC tower? New build!! Any suggestions?

I am not much into gaming at all maybe just online games. I have a lot of programs that I use and a lot of movie, song files. My plain is to us the PC with a HDTV or a monitor for when I choose too. (Not at the same time) The board has on board HDMI & DVI so I would just use that for now and add a better video card later. I will also add an external HD 1TB to hold moves etc so I don’t slow down the computer later on also a blue-Ray burner when they go down in price. I have never built a computer but I have the electrical/mechanical ability to do so; when it comes to the programs bios etc I will have my friend do so. I defiantly want an M- board that has a HDMI, DVI so I could save some money for now or should I get a better MB and do I really need 3.0 USB? I really like the Asus I used the MB before ant I liked them. Thank you,I choose two 1TD Vs one 2TD for the fact that I was told if you use two HD’s the computer can run smother/faster. Is that true?So I understand this is overkill! I chose the Asus for the price $99 and what it had now even if the board is bottom line does that matter? Also I could save $150 if I went with Intel core i3 530 CPU is this just as good? The Pentium are a lot cheaper but then do I need to get a different M-board right? more

Resolved Question: GTX 295 in SLI = slower than single GTX 295?

Hi! I ordered a computer from CyberPower back in December and regretted my decision within the first weeks due to BSODs and severe issues with the PC. After contacting customer support, I figured out that the problem was the network card and that I had to get a new one. However, before I narrowed down the problem, tech support had me switch out the GPUs (dual 295 GTX), switch out the RAM, and even reset the mobo options (originally the CPU was overclocked and so were the GPUs). While I'm not sure when the FPS dropped, sometime in between the switching of the GPUs and the resetting of the mobo, my computer had started booting up oddly. This generally consisted of a slow, frame-by-frame screen change when moving from my login to the desktop, and even occurred when closing processes on the desktop (the process would visually disappear at an alarmingly slow pace). I ended up fixing this by doing a 300% clean install of the drivers. But now I'm having a reoccurring issue with FPS in video games. So far I've tested three games: Star Trek Online, Dragon Age: Origins, and Mass Effect 2. Each game had a severe FPS issue when I started it up with SLI on. While I don't have any benchmarks, the skipping is obvious and significantly more than a 1 or 2 FPS drop. After reading some info about what would cause this, I found that it could be overheating. But my GPU temperatures never rise about 60C. Ever (tested with SpeedFan). Also, I'm only asking here because CyberPower's customer service is absolutely terrible and they're annoying to mess with. I'd like to consult you all before I go back to them. Another Also: This is probably really choppy structure. Am slightly enraged after spilling a bowl of ramen and losing my SLI bridge to retest my GPUs. Because of the probable choppiness, will just put a TL;DR section under this. TL;DR I got a computer from CyberPower. Said computer often locks up while playing video games or just fiddling around on the desktop for no apparent reason. The FPS is significantly slower with SLI turned on. I've concluded that the temperatures of the GPUs never exceed 60C. I installed the newest drivers to the best of my ability, though I may have forgot to install something completely after resetting the mobo. I've been on tech support with a techie from CyberPower repeatedly, he had me do some stuff like resetting the mobo, flipping drivers around, and messing with RAM. Perhaps there's something I left blank in the BIOS; I don't know, am not a computer savvy person and just did what the techie said to do. Are there any suggestions as to what I may have done to cause such a significant performance differences while messing with the insides of my comp? Was really careful in touching the parts, made sure to unearth myself by touching the case. Have made sure that it wasn't an issue with a single GPU, though the RAM maybe a problem depending on if it's even a possibility. Suggestions? Any at all? Resolved Question: Computer Freezes Black screen and buzzing speakers?

Okay, First of all my specs. Windows 7 64 BIT nforce 790i ultra sli MOBO Geforce 285 GTX ( x2 sli ) 4GB ram 750GB WD HDD 250GB WD HDD Intel dual core 3.0 GHZ ( currently runs 3.4GHZ )<- i didn't over clock this, it just kinda done it on it's own.. Any how the freeze, it happens alot when i play games, The monitor will go black, then a very annoying buzzing will come through my speakers, the buzzing sounds as if it's just looping the sound for the last .2 seconds over and over. I looked in the event viewer found nothing, i ran virus protectsions again nothing. I did figure it was overheating, but i checked all tempretures and again NOTHING, all my drivers are up to date, i ran benchmarks and stability tests on all computer hardware everythign passed perfectly, with no freezing. The games are Combat ARms, and 2moons. Though it has been known to happen other times as well, it has NEVER happend when i was just browsing the net or watching movies. But does happen only when i'm playing games Though this might be a seprate problem, on combat arms, sometimes the there will be random spots on the fields that will flash white, it's not exactly uncommon it's CONSTANT and very annoying. Perhaps i need to update DirectX? Any ideas would help, i'm fresh out. I am pretty good with computers, i have worked as a computer technician for 5 years, and i'm currently in college for information technology, though i can't figure out this problem. The fact is i WILL not take my computer to a company to fix, since i'm sure i can do it myself if i knew a general idea of what the problem was. But as i said ive tested and done everything i can think of, even memtest86 runs perfect. I don't see any errors or other symptoms other than the one problem..Oh, just found an error in event viewer, i doubt it's related but it's Audit Failure Error code 5038 Code integrity determined that the image hash of a file is not valid. The file could be corrupt due to unauthorized modification or the invalid hash could indicate a potential disk device error. File Name:\Device\HarddiskVolume1\Windows\vtany.sys more

Resolved Question: Best AMD setup? (revised)?

x2 x3 x4? Which Processor would be better for me? I spend 99% of my time in firefox (I now have 41 tabs open). I mostly sell on ebay and stream videos/music. I am typically listening to music while down/uploading/editing photos, facbook chatting and browsing in general. Also, I think I'll be going the ddr3 route. So far, I'm looking at: M4A79XTD EVO M4A78T-E or GA-MA770T-UD3P I don't care about onboard video. But I don't game so I don't care about sli or crossfire either. Well right now i have a amd 4000+ dual 2ghz and 4gb 800mhz ram on and m2n-sli w/ a 9800 gt running 2 monitors and 2 ssd's in raid 0. Altogether, my system hangs and I'm looking to upgrade. Seeing as I can get a $60 mobo, $100 AM3 processor & 8gb ddr3 for $120 and I already have the hd's and a couple decent video cards. I was figuring this would be the way to go vs. spending about $200+ on 8gb ddr2 and a 3ghz-ish processor to upgrade what I have. more

Resolved Question: Windows 7 pro doesn't completely shut off my computer, it only shuts down the os, the psu & fans are still on?

So I have a computer that I put together about 2 months ago that I put Windows 7 professional 64bit on. Everything works perfectly except I can't get the computer to shut itself off when I press shutdown in the start menu. It will shutdown the operating system but the computer is still on so I have to manually press and hold the power button on the tower to get the computer to turn all the way off. I'd like to get it so that I can just click shutdown in the start menu and the entire computer shuts off on its own. Could this be a software problem or a hardware problem? I'm thinking its probably more of a hardware problem. Whichever case it may be how do I fix it? If it's a hardware problem is there a connection I might have missed that would be the culprit? Here is the parts I bought for my desktop a couple of months ago, all are brand new, none used or refurbished: NZXT ZERO 2 Crafted Series CS-NT-ZERO-2 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case Model #:CS-NT-ZERO-2 GIGABYTE GA-EP43-UD3L LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard Model #: GA-EP43-UD3L XFX GX260XADJC GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card Model #: GX260XADJC APEVIA ATX-JV650W 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply Model #: ATX-JV650W Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 Wolfdale 2.8GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Model BX80571E7400 Model #: BX80571E7400 CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-8500C5C G Model #: TWIN2X4096-8500C5C G Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive Model #: ST3500418AS LG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE Model GH22NP20 Model #: GH22NP20 I didn't include the monitor or keyboard I got because I know it is highly unlikely that either has to do with this problem, although I doubt that every single thing I listed above has anything to do with the problem, but if it is a hardware problem, then I know that something I listed above is the culprit, be it a wrong or missing connection or whatever. Thank you for your help. I know this doesn't seem like a really big issue but I have forgotten on numerous occasions that my computer doesn't shut itself completely off on its own and I'd rather not have the computer on for huge lengths of time, whether or not it lessens the life of the computer. 5 days ago - 1 day left for voting I should also add that it does succesfully restart my computer every time on its own. And I've looked up on the gigabyte website and there are two revisions they list for my motherboard model number: rev 1.0 and rev 1.2 and the box that my motherboard came in says rev 1.1 How do I tell what revision my my motherboard is? OK so I just opened up the case and took a look at the revision number on the motherboard itself and that also says 1.1 so I am emailing gigabyte about what bios I should update to. I also checked the power supply and I did not see and switch or anything on it to switch to soft power down.I've already checked the motherboard for the revision number and it is 1.1 The problem is I don't want to download any drivers or BIOS versions from the gigabyte website because they only list rev 1.0 and rev 1.2 for my model motherboard. I've contacted them about it but they are very slow to reply. And yes the monitor shuts off and it appears that the motherboard is off too because none of the lights are off. I'm also assuming that the hard drive is also off. It seems that the only things that don't turn off are the power supply unit and the fans, including the cpu fan. more

Resolved Question: Which Video Card should i go with?

I'm am in the process of building a computer that i would like to spend a max of 1000 on and i am having a little difficulty lowering the price to under that line. I will mainly be using the computer for gaming and obviously be using it for other things like music and microsoft office programs. Here is what i have set up as my set up so far: -HP 24X Multiformat DVD Writer Black SATA Model 1260i -Antec Two Hundred Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case -Western Digital Caviar Blue WD3200AAJS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -ASUS VW193TR Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor -DIAMOND 5770PE51G Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card -CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply -Logitech 967973-0403 Black PS/2 Standard Deluxe 250 Desktop -CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-8500C5D -GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard -Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80580Q9400 -Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Full -Dynatron P985 92mm Ball CPU Cooler So that is my build that i am trying to get under $1000 and i am at around $1100. So i am trying to lower the price and i know the video card should be one of the first things and my other option for a video card is SAPPHIRE 100284L Radeon HD 5750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card This card is close in comparison with the other one and if i do down grade to this new one i will save about 40 bucks so is this a good card to down grade to or is there something better. i don't care if it is ATI or Nvidia more

Voting Question: Building a computer and don't know what to do!?

Obviously this is a little bit more then i am willing to spend and the problem is i have done everything i can think of to lower the price without sacrificing to much performance. The only other thing i can think of is switching the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz for the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor. This is a very valid option because as studies/benchmarks have shown is that these to CPUs (unoverclocked) are very close in a performance/gaming comparison. The issue i see with this decision is longevity, i dont want to spend a grand every 4 years, i want a computer that will last for quite a while and to me the longevity of a computer is based off it it's CPU's capabilities. Everything else besides the motherboard can be replaced and upgrade as long as the CPU can handle it. So my issue still stands that obviously the core 2 quad will last longer, and with 3d gaming on the horizon, i want something that will last me quite a while. With this you also have to consider if the price drop is worth it because i will drop the overall price by $100. So my question is: what should i do to get this computer into my price range or under $1000, without sacrificing to much performance and longevity? And as a side question is do you see any problems with the compatibility of the parts or if the computer will not run because of some part choice (like power supply not having enough outputs or something like that) more

Resolved Question: Low frames on Modern Warfare 2 with my specs!?

Hi, Just got Modern Warfare 2 and saw that the minimum specs were much lower than my current PC rig. My PC: - AMD Athlon(tm) 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.60GHz - 3.00GB DDR2 RAM - Windows Vista 32-bit (Going to install XP and try with that) - Hybrid SLI Nvidia GeForce 8600 (GR 8200 + GF 8500) - Running additional displays - 2 monitors attached (1 DVI, 1 Analogue VGA) I tried shutting down every program on the machine and just left Modern Warfare 2 and steam, yet still experiencing low frame rates. Also tried turning everything down (Graphically) in the modern warfare 2 settings, but still got some lag which was just enough to make me give up. The menu in game is also really laggy on all settings. Could it be that I should change the Hybrid SLI mode to "Boost Performance" or change to XP? I run the game in windowed mode at 1024x720 on a 1440x990 monitor Thanks for your suggestions. more

Resolved Question: What would be the best nvidia graphics card for my computer under a budget of 15000 Rs/- or $300 ?

Hey guys & gals, please help me find the best nvidia graphics card for my computer under a budget of 15000 Rs/- or $300 :~ First of all let me tell you that my RAM slot supports ddr2 memory, but whether that means my motherboard only supports ddr2 type memory for the graphics card or not I'm not sure. I'm guessing that it doesn't because somebody told me about it, but still I've got no proof ! Yes, my motherboard has 1 PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot.I had my PSU checked by someone & he said 450W-500W ! I have a 19 inch CRT (vga) monitor on which I plan to play hardcore games like crysis, farcry 2, COD-World at war,Dead Space,Fallout 3 & other high-end graphics at max. resolutions & at extremely high speed ! My budget- 15000 Rs/- OR $300 ? I have no intentions of using the card for more than 1 monitor, so dual link monitor support is not a necessity. I will also not pair up two or more cards(SLI or Crossfire), so they are not a must either! Please inform me of the price of the card in Rupees(Indian Currency) otherwise in dollars. Please don't suggest any other card like Ati Raedon, etc, ONLY nvidia cards. My specs:~ OS- Windows 7 Ultimate build 7600 retail x-86 Processor- Intel Core 2 duo 7200@ 2.53GHz RAM- 3gb ddr2 (manufacturer-zion) Motherboard- ASUS P5GC-MX1333 Currently using GPU- xfx nvidia geforce 8400se Monitor- LG 700E CRT (vga) 19 inches It'll be very helpful if you can also point out the the brand from which to buy (i.e., XFX,evga, palit, asus, etc) In my view XFX is the best & should be suggested ! What would be the price of your suggested card in India ? If possible, point me to some sites for further help regarding prices, informations, reviews, etc. as per your suggested graphics card. PLEASE CHOOSE THE BEST NVIDIA CARD FOR MY SYSTEM UNDER $300 (Rs 15000/-) Thanx ! more

Im going to purchase a new Gaming computer and im sort of lost here. The total is $1,454 (with $109 shipping) Im guessing that the parts are really good but i want to know how good they really are based on your opinion or knowledge of computer parts (PROCESSOR) [== Quad Core ==] AMD Phenom™ II X4 965 Black Edition Quad-Core CPU (MEMORY) 8 GB [2 GB X4] DDR3-1333 Memory Module (VIDEO CARD) ATI Radeon HD 5750 - 1GB - CrossFire Mode (DUAL CARDS) (MOTHER BOARD) [CrossFire] ASUS M4A77TD PRO -- AMD 770/SB710 Chipset w/7.1 Sound, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, Dual PCI-E MB (POWER SUPPLY) 700 Watt -- Power Supply - SLI Ready (PRIMARY HARD DRIVE) 500 GB HARD DRIVE -- 16M Cache, 7200 RPM, 3.0Gb/s - DUAL 500GB Drives (1TB CAPACITY) - RAID 0 High Performance (OPTICAL DRIVE) 22X Dual Format/Double Layer DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW Drive (SOUND CARD) 3D Premium Surround Sound Onboard (NETWORK CARD) Onboard LAN Network (Gb or 10/100) (OPERATING SYS) Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium + [Free 60-Day !!!] Microsoft Office 2007(Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access ....) - 64-Bit the rest is the fan/liquid cooling, mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers, and the cpu casing which adds up to about $350 to $450. Am i getting my money's worth or no? can you give me examples of how smooth this computer can run certain games (examples?) It's alot of questions so please tell me what you know, i don't expect a full answer unless someone is kind enough =Dyeah i think im just about to cancel my order, its too expensive and it adds up to $1500 now for an 850W i want to pay $1,000 or under and i might just take your advice steve. more

Resolved Question: First Custom Built Gaming Computer?

Ok, so Im 15 years old and I want a computer for christmas. It's main use? Everything. I want to do some pretty heavy gaming like Crysis and MW2 because my Xbox 360 died. Im really into music so it's gonna have an excess of 10Gbs of music and video on it. Ive looked at retail computers at best buy and Sam's club just to name a few, and price wise the computers just arnt that great. I know a little bit about computer hardware so I considered building one with my father, who built our home computers years back. Our computer now is about 8 years old and its just become awfully slow. I dont need the newest fastest Core i7 Extreme or anything like that, but I do want to play games smoothly at pretty high settings with no lag or hiccups (cause i hate that!). And it needs to last ~4 years until im out of high school being pretty fast and playing new games before it shows signs of lagging behind. Ive put together numerous configurations on New egg and sites like that, and i want something like this. Processors: Core i7 or Core 2 Quad (There both quad-core so I dont see any difference, just not Core 2 Duo.) Dosent have to be the Core i7- 975 Extreme that costs 2000 dollars just the average 2.66GHz or maybe 2.8. Dont know much about AMD Processors but ill consider the Phenom X4 or whatever is equal to Intels Quad-Core. Motherboards: I dont know much about motherboards but I do want one that supports i7 and Core 2 Quad of course and maybe something that supports SLI and Crossfire. Also i want just a name brand like Asus or EVGA, not a brand where you say, "who the hell are they??". Memory: Around 6 to 8 Gbs sounds like enough. I dont know the difference between Dual Channel (DDR2) and Triple Channel (DDR3). So if you can explain that a little i would appreciate it. Graphics: Nvida or ATI, leaning towards ATI because they are a bit cheaper and still offer good performance. Im confused with Nvidia becuase it seems like all their cards are just renamed versions of older cards. I want something with DX11, preferably a HD 5870. I know Nvidia hasnt released their DX11 cards yet but Im still considering it. Down the road (like next year in 2010) i might buy myself another identical card to go crossfire in time for Crysis 2 and stuff like that, so i just want it to be compatible. Everything else is pretty self explanitory. just a 500Gb or something harddrive. DVD drives and burners. Around an 850w PSU that can handle SLI and CrossfireX safely. Im going to need a wireless card and maybe a beefy sound card. Im gonna need a card reader for my camera. And thats just about it besides the case which is my personal preference. Also looking for a monitor, HD, widescreen and all that around 22' to 23' inches maybe 1080p. Looked at Asus and Acer and im pretty satisfied coming from a 20' CRT at 1024x768. Some of my previous configurations have been around 1500 to 1700 dollars and thats a little too much considering im going to pitch in a little on the computer and buy myself a monitor, speakers, keybrd, etc. Im in the range of 1000 to 1500 dollars, I have about 900 dollars and im willing to pitch in a little on the computers TOTAL cost to help out my parents. (With tax and shipping on parts.) Im keeping aside about 500 dollars to buy a monitor (~250) the logitech x-540 (~90) the g9 mouse (~60) a nice lit-up keyboard (~80) and crysis maximum edition and MW2 (Both about ~90) just for starters. I dont want to empty my bank account either. lol Keep in mind im coming from a Pc with a AMD Athlon XP2400+. A 6600Gt. and 256Mb of ram. So this is gonna be a HUGE upgrade for me. Ok im done now i know i had a lot too say but i just want something nice for the $$. I really REALLY aprecciate any info or help you can give me. Mainly you computer people. Thanks!!! more

Resolved Question: I can't get the video to work on my new system?

I just built a new pc but it's not sending out video. here are my specs real quick: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83Ghz 12M 1333FSB Sparkle GeForce GTS 250 1GB PCIe w/Dual Link DVI EVGA nForce 790i Ultra SLI Socket 775 Motherboard Patriot i5 Viper II 4GB PC16000 DDR3 650 watt power supply A salvaged 40gb hdd hard drive, that I was using in my last system. The power supply is too. Ok, so that's all that I have hooked up right now, and I only have one memory stick in right now though. So everything in my case is working right now, I have the video card in the primary pcie2 slot and the fan is going, both of the power cables to the card are not hooked up to anything else. I have checked many times that it is in securely. my power button and lights and reset button are connected and working. I have an extra case fan (12v), a fan attached to the heatsink on the board and a surprisingly good cpu fan. that is everything that is hooked up. I am using the vga port and have it hooked up to my monitor and then my friends (which I unplugged from his computer when it was working) and I used a different vga cable each time. I don't know what's wrong. more

Voting Question: Can I salvage my PSU in my computer?

I was on the internet on my computer and I fell asleep. When I woke up I minimized the windows on the computer, turned of the monitor (not the computer), and was going to go to sleep. Not 5 minutes later a smelt plastic burning. I determined it was the computer so I turned it off (the computer was still working when the smell occurred) The next day I opened the computer and determined the smell was from the PSU. I was wondering if it was possible to salvage the PSU instead of buying a new one. Also I havnt turned on the computer since last night I have a desktop computer with windows vista 64, dual core (I think it is 6600 or something like that), 580 HUSH SLI ready power supply, and one 9600 gt Nvidia graphics card (though I have a SLI ready motherboard just not a second card). The games I play that are graphics intensive are sims 3, bioshock, and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (So not too bad) Any suggestions as to how or if I can salvage this and what would be the recommended PSU that you would suggest? Also I would prefer to pay less than 50 dollars as that is all my parents can afford (for christmas gift) I also want to play bioshock 2 and mass effect 2 when they release more
