Resolved Question: New "first time" build ... which CPU would YOU pick?
Hello, I've been planning a "first-time" computer build for a few months now, and can't seem to decide on a CPU. I'm leaning towards the Intel i5-661 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115217&Tpk=i5%20661) "hyper-threaded dual core" because with its onboard GPU, I wouldn't need a separate video card (for what I do). The i3-530 sounds too wimpy, and the i7-860 sounds like WAY more power than I need ... haven't really studied AMD options. So, by MY calculations, I need the CPU, MOBO, RAM (4GB, presumably) and a HARD DRIVE. If I DON'T go for the onboard GPU of the i5-661, then I need a videocard along the lines of the ATI 5450 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127479&cm_re=ati_5450-_-14-127-479-_-Product). As for a HARD DRIVE, I've been reading good things about the Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200.12. At least a 750GB WD Caviar Black, I think ... your thoughts? APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: about two weeks from now BUDGET RANGE: $500 to $600 or so (if under, then GREAT!), exluding parts already bought (listed below) [originally $1,000] SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: surfing the internet, watching movies, streaming movies from Netflix, ripping/burning CDs and DVDs ... that's all I do NOW. Hi I am going to be studying in the new academic year. I therefore want a basic computer just for office and the internet and nothing else (I have a gaming rig in my bedroom but this is not conducive to studying. I know 'basic' is subjective to individuals but I have a monitor and keyboard and mouse so it is just the base unit I am wanting. Would a 'nettop' be any good as I don't know anyone who has one so I am not sure how powerful they are. Mesh have quoted me the following for £280, is this spec ok (I know nettops don't come with a dvd drive this does so that has to be factored in, at a pinch I have a spare external disk drive. I'm am in the process of building a computer that i would like to spend a max of 1000 on and i am having a little difficulty lowering the price to under that line. I will mainly be using the computer for gaming and obviously be using it for other things like music and microsoft office programs. Here is what i have set up as my set up so far: -HP 24X Multiformat DVD Writer Black SATA Model 1260i -Antec Two Hundred Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case -Western Digital Caviar Blue WD3200AAJS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -ASUS VW193TR Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor -XFX HD-489X-ZSFC Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card -CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply -Logitech 967973-0403 Black PS/2 Standard Deluxe 250 Desktop -CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-8500C5D -GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard -Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Model BX80569Q9550 -Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Full -COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus Intel Core i5 & Intel Core i7 compatible RR-B10-212P-G1 120mm "heatpipe direct contact" Long life sleeve CPU Cooler If i were to buy this all off of newegg.com i end up with a grand total of $1,301.38. Obviously this is a little bit more then i am willing to spend and the problem is i have done everything i can think of to lower the price without sacrificing to much performance. The only other thing i can think of is switching the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz for the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor. This is a very valid option because as studies/benchmarks have shown is that these to CPUs (unoverclocked) are very close in a performance/gaming comparison. The issue i see with this decision is longevity, i dont want to spend a grand every 4 years, i want a computer that will last for quite a while and to me the longevity of a computer is based off it it's CPU's capabilities. Everything else besides the motherboard can be replaced and upgrade as long as the CPU can handle it. So my issue still stands that obviously the core 2 quad will last longer, and with 3d gaming on the horizon, i want something that will last me quite a while. With this you also have to consider if the price drop is worth it because i will drop the overall price by $100. So my question is: what should i do to get this computer into my price range or under $1000, without sacrificing to much performance and longevity? And as a side question is do you see any problems with the compatibility of the parts or if the computer will not run because of some part choice (like power supply not having enough outputs or something like that) moreVoting Question: Netbook with dual screen vs Laptop (for college) WHICH ONE?
I'm going to college soon as a business major (will be using excel and writing papers quite often). i was just wondering if i should get a netbook and a big monitor screen (20+ inches) to use with it, or if i should just get a laptop (14-15 inches?). which do you think would be more feasible? I would prefer to have something portable so i can bring it to the library to use because i am not comfortable studying in the dormitories. thanks! moreResolved Question: Buying computer upgrades?
I brought a Dell Dimension 2400 about 5 years ago when it first came out and now I want to do some serious upgrading. Does anyone know possible compatible motherboards for this tower? And I plan on using either an Intel Dual Core or AMD Phenom 9500. Another question if I buy a new motherboard do I still have to get another graphics card or does the motherboard come equipped with a good one? I am currently studying game and simulation programming and I have to have a computer capable of running 3ds/Maya and C++. I am looking to buy an additional monitor to run different programs and apply the effects. Any help would be greatly appreciated. moreResolved Question: How difficult is it to repair an LCD monitor? I have a 4-year old Daytek TFT-LCD monitor model NLM19S.?
My monitor started flickering when I was using it, eventually flickering so much I couldn't read it anymore. When it started, the image was fine, but as I used the monitor it started progressively getting worse. Today, I finally went out and replaced it with a new Dell monitor. But then, there was the old Daytek, and I hated to think of throwing it in the trash (mostly because it cost me almost $800 bucks 4 years ago), and dual monitors would be nice.... I wondered how hard is it to fix one of those. What's the problem most likely to be if the image was flickering. Is this a bulb I can simply replace? Maybe I don't have to add to the land fill after all. I'm no PC expert, but I did study computers for 3 years in college and I have 2 classes of PC repair to my credit. However, in the day, we had CRTs, and we didn't dare open them. So, I'm not an expert for sure, but I might be able to do this if it isn't too difficult. Can anyone offer advice? Should I toss it or is there hope? moreResolved Question: Why do Xbox 360s seem to have better graphics than higher performance gaming PCs?
Ok here is a topic which I don't quite understand. Since I have been tempted to build a gaming PC lately, I have been studying the graphics potential of them. I noticed on a friend's gaming PC that the graphics still don't look extraordinary when compared to a 360. He has a Geforce 9600 graphics card, 3gb ram, a 3.0ghz dual core processor, and a 1080p resolution monitor. He ran the game Crysis with all settings on medium, and no anti-aliasing. The graphics looked very good, but I noticed that objects in the distance often looked glitchy, and would disappear and flicker sometimes, like they were at the edge of memory ability. Now if you compare a 360 game like Halo 3, you never see anything like this. Everything is always perfect, and if I remember correctly, the graphics look even better on the console. So why is it that a gaming PC that should have higher performance than a console actually performs less? I'm just having doubts about building a gaming PC and the performance. moreResolved Question: What profession in the Information Technology field should I look into?
I consider myself to be a very advanced computer and technology user. I can tear apart a laptop or computer and put it together. I can wipe hard drives and install Linux and other operating systems, and I have the ability to find and setup the drivers necessary to run things (this is mainly a concern with linux) I am not afraid of command lines and I am overall very astute and can easily learn new things. I don't think I'd be interesting in writing code the rest of my life, but what I was thinking about is maybe "monitoring a company's network at night" or something along those lines. Basically, I can currently solve almost any computer problem. I am the friend that is called when computers break. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should study/ what possible career opportunities I have? I am currently dual business and political science major at SIUC, and plan on pursuing that, but at night ALL I do is chill on my computer. Is there a way I can get paid? moreResolved Question: I am think of getting my wife a laptop for her studying is this one good?
