Resolved Question: How much is my older computer bottlenecking my video card?
I have been noticing a little bit of slowdown in some games at high settings 1680x1050 resolution and I'm just wondering what part of my computer (yes I know the set up is an older one) could be bottlenecking my video card which I'm fairly sure is not the problem. I'd like to upgrade but an upgrade would mean a new mobo, cpu and memory because my skt 939 board is upgraded as high as it will go.

moreVoting Question: 24" vga monitor or 19" hdmi tv?
ok guys, im going to build my first gaming computer and i have a 19" hdmi tv that ive had a while. and my brother has offered to buy it off me (for £120) so i can buy a monitor that is 24" for £100. but the only problem is, the monitor is vga and so are most of the others in this price range. so should i keep my tv and use it in hd or buy a monitor that is a lot bigger and play using vga? (does the hd really matter?. and if it does, would the bigger screen make up for it?)
and because im kinda new to this, im not sure if the graphics card im getting will work on vga because it says it is hd... here is a link:

moreResolved Question: Rebuild/upgrade of an old pc, advice please....?
Hi there basically ive got an old dell dimension 3000(intel celaron 512mb ram) that im thinking of upgrading for the modern age.
I dont have a lot of money which is why im not building a new pc from scratch, Im upgrading this one so as to keep costs down with things like the monitor and keyboard/mouse etc as well as any other components that dont need upgrading.
Now im not going for an ultra high end pc because as I said money is tight however id like someone to tell me if the components ive researched here will go together or if there are any conflict issues(this is my first build)

can anyone give me any advice on this?
moreResolved Question: Is this PSU good enough for a Radeon HD 4850?
I am wanting to install an HD4850 in this system to replace my current X1900XT but I'm concerned my current (RS-460-PCAR-A3) 460W Coolermaster Extreme Power Plus is not enough. Is it? I understand that my current X1900XT card is more power consuming than the HD4850 so in that respect a PSU upgrade would not be necessary right?

Secondly, are these specs actually good?
Is there anything in my above specs, that can be scaled down to take away some of the price, while still playing games EXACTLY the same?
Thirdly, just incase you need it, here is a link to the original computer before I changed the specs-http://www.avadirect.com/product_details_configurator.asp?PRID=11024
If the link doesn't work, it is the Savvy P45 Gaming System
And if you can only answer just one question, please do. I need all the help I can get.
moreResolved Question: Upgrade CPU from Athlon 64 3200+ to X2?
I'm running Windows 7 on a Socket 939 Athlon 64 3200+. I see that the dual-core "X2" versions are now going for pocket change on eBay. Would I see much improvement upgrading to an X2? If it matters, the motherboard is an Abit UL8, with 2GB RAM.
I don't play games; mostly I use MS Excel, Visual Studio, edit family snapshots, and browse the web. Just wondering if I'd see snappier performance in Windows 7 in general.Joey -- Thanks, but the X4 is not available in Socket 939.Carter and Rhyled:
Thanks -- what about 512K L2 Cache vs. 1024K L2 Cache? Would I see much difference for the kind of computing in Windows 7 I described?
(Some of the Socket 939 Athlon X2's have 512K L2 cache, some have 1024K.)
moreVoting Question: How much could I get for this 2nd hand Computer?
The specs listed below are for a computer I build about 3 years ago. It’s in good condition and has all boxes and manuals still intact. If I were to sell this on eBay or word of mouth, what kind of price do computer knowledge people think I could get.
This would be for the UK so I’m sure prices will differ for the US. But UK pounds please.

moreVoting Question: What CPU can i get with this motherboard?
I need a new CPU, so what will actually work here.
According to CPU-Z data:
Motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-K8NF9 ULTRA
Graphics interface PCI-Express (maybe for a new graphics card too =D )
CPU:
AMD Athlon 64 processor 3500+ (2.23ghz)
Socket 939
90 nm
I would like any advice on what processor i can get. I've been on the website and i've checked on my motherboard to see what processors it supports. I got a list full of them but also processors with AM2 socket, like this Athlon 64x2 4800+. So if im not mistaking, i can't use this one.
I'm looking for at least 2.9, or 2.7 Dual core. I do not want to buy a new motherboard though.
moreResolved Question: Will a new graphics card make a noticeable difference for me?
I'm not a gamer, but I am considering upgrading my graphics card. I have an old NVIDIA GeForce 6200 that works fine. However, it only has 128MB on board memory, and I read somewhere that it may eat into my RAM pretty good. I'm on a budget, and looking at picking up something like an 8800 GT w/512MB on board. Will I notice a reduced load on my RAM? (upgrading from 2GB to 4GB, in the mail now). Will I notice a huge difference in watching hulu and other online video? I have a AMD 939 3800+ 2.0GHz Dual Core, and mostly use Office applications, watch some Youtube, have a couple of people logged in on Windows 7, burn some CD/DVDs, play a lot of music. Thanks.
moreVoting Question: Where can i find a AMD 939 dual core processor?
Where can i find an older 939 socket AMD dual core processor? (Online)
I'm trying to upgrade an older copmuter for my parents.
This is the board i currently have:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135177
I've tried searching for 939 sockets and then when i look into the CPU it says that its AM2.
Will an AM2 work in a 939 socket?
moreVoting Question: Is it possible for me to upgrade my CPU while using the same motherboard?
My computer is running slow and it's time for an upgrade. I was wondering if it's possible to upgrade my CPU to a dual core or quad core chip while still being able to use my same motherboard. If so, what AMD processors would be best? I'm looking for a significant performance upgrade, but if it's possible I'm trying to keep it under $200 or $300. I'll also be adding a graphics card.

I need some help with my computer, it's running slow when I try to open videos and multiple web pages with heavy graphics.

moreVoting Question: Best video card and CPU for my needs?
Looking for a CPU and video card upgrade for my 3 year old PC. I don't want to buy a new PC and I really just want to squeeze another year or two out of it. I'm into gaming and want something that will let me run my games on high settings with some of the eye candy enabled if possible. I enjoy FPS's (Modern Warfare 2, Crysis), and RPGs (Fallout 3).
My specs-
Windows XP Pro
2gb DDR ram
AMD Athlon 3700+ socket 939
Geforce 7900GS PCIe 16x
My motherboard is a little old and only supports Athlon socket 939 processors (no FX series or Opterons are supported, also only supports single and dual core chips, no quad core). The graphics slot is a regular PCI Express 16x, not the newer PCIe 2.0.
I want a dual core processor that will give me the most bang for the buck and a video card that's going to run my games smoothly at 1440x900 (widescreen) with decent video settings and not break the bank.
Any suggestions?
PS. I might buy a new motherboard if it comes to that, but I really just want to work with what I have.
moreResolved Question: I broke 3 pins off my Athlon 3700+...is that bad?
Well I'm a newbie with tinkering inside my desk-top...I bent some of the 939 pins on the back putting the CPU back in....yeah, I feel like a moron...well, anyways, I managed to straighten them and put the cpu back in correctly at last. Even with the 3 broken pins, it seems to be running fine. And I did a PC Docotor Stress Test on it which it passed...it runs BF2142 fine, so well....will those 3 broken pins have any affect at all on the computer's performance? I was considering a dual core processor upgrade, but maybe I don't really need it. With everything streamlined in the OS and anti-virus turned off it's fairly quick anyways. But the broken pins are mainly my question. Thanks!seriously, 3 pins broke off...but BF 2142 runs just fine...and no errors reported whatsoever....

moreResolved Question: Socket 939 upgrade vs. New computer?
So I'm not uber-hardcore, but I like my games to look nice. I have a socket 939 Athlon 3500+ and 1GB of RAM.
I'd like to pop in a dual core 939 and another gigabyte (or 3) of RAM. By the time I get an FX-55 and more RAM I'll have spent around $300.
On Bestbuy.com I saw a computer with 8 GIGABYTES (WTF?!) of RAM and a Core i7 with a GTS240 (not AWESOME but still...). For $1000. 8GB of RAM? Really? Did I miss something?
And this 8GB computer is considered "midlevel" gaming with "decent performance". My computer (circa 2004, single core) runs World of Warcraft maxed out at 60fps. Which is pretty good! This 8GB thing looks like it should be bleeding-edge sick.
What am I missing? I was also thinking of building a PC but what would be the advantage over just buying this thing? Of course I'd upgrade the graphics card but everything else looks wicked for $1000.
Any thoughts on this?

1. What type of processor(s) can i upgrade to?
2. Where can i find these processors?
3. Are there any dual core processors i can run?
4. Does my computer support hyper-threading for the memory?
5. How do i turn on hyper-threading?
6. What would make a bigger difference: an extra gig of memory, better graphics card, or a faster processor?
7. Also, my external HDD can be connected by eSATA, can i buy a pci card to enable this connection, and is it much faster than USB 2.0?
i mainly use my pc for some gaming, audio/video decoding and usage, and peer 2 peer stuff. i don't need to run crysis, but i would like a performance upgrade. i have also recently changed the thermal paste to a much better grade paste, and added a pci slot fan under my graphics card to keep it cooler (what a difference that made!) all other fans/heat sinks are stock. well, that's about all, i hope i provided enough info so my questions can be answered. if u need any more info, let me know! thank you!ok, can i run this safely.............

moreResolved Question: Which processor is faster!?
On my old pc i have a AMD X2 dual core 3800 socket 939 processor running at 2ghz. The pc i am looking to buy now has an Intel E2200 at 2.2ghz. Will there be much of a difference in speed wise just with the processor alone?, and if so which is faster?
Thanks
moreResolved Question: Question on a pc build?
OK, well i am currently in the process of building a new pc, so 1st let me say a few things. I want to build this for gaming. the build i have now, runs most older, less demanding games pretty well. (Cod4 MW, WoW) but some of the newer ones definetly wont run so well.
the system i am currently using is:
Mobo: ASUS A8S-x (939 socket)
AMD Atholn 64 x2 4200+
2 gig ( 2x 1 gig) of Crucial RAM
Geforce 8800 GT Vid card
An old IDE 250 gig hard drive
Windows XP (sp2)
Samsung syncmaster 206 bw (monitor)
1. I want my new pc build to be able to have high quality gaming expireinces, be able to make movies, dvd, etc. run a few apps at the same time (mucis playing, youtube, ventrilo, and Cyrsis type games, without struggling)and i NEVER want to see that hourglass. ( ok maybe not never, but as little as possible)
2. My budget is around the $600.00 dollar mark.
3. I live in the united states
4. I have always liked AMD ( good performence, good price) But i have been thinking about Intel now....Mainly due to the fact that i heard Intel CPU are better, if u can afford them, and also, that Intel Mobos, are the best. (compared to ASUS, Giga-Byte)
5. I wont be needing a optical drive at this moment. may get a blu ray multi burner down the road (waiting on technology to improve, as well as pricing)
6. I have searched, and looked at some other threads, but never asked a question before.
7. I have never Overclocked anything before, but i have been doing a bit of research into it,and i would definitely like to try it out, once i know what i am doing, and would like a CPU that is able to OC well.
8. I am trying to build this in the coming weeks, as i buy a few parts here and there.
Ok, i have come up with my own idea for a build, that i can afford, but i would like some opinons, on if what i picked, is a good ..or could, and should i have went for something better>? ( granted, you get what you pay for, i mean, could i spend an extra 10-20 buks, and get WAY better performance/? or is it really not going to make a difference) ok so far this is what i have in mind:
Case: RAIDMAX SMILODON Extreme Black ATX-612WEB 1.0mm SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Foldout MB Computer Case
Motherboard:Intel DP45SG LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor
CPU FAN:ZALMAN CNPS9900LED 120mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler
Memory: CORSAIR 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN3X2048-1333C9
Hard drive:Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - OE
Power supply:SIGMA FOCUS SP600B 600W (700W Peak) ATX12V Power Supply
Video Card: I will be keeping my same video card at the moment. ( A GeForce 8800 GT) I know its not the best out there, but should i really need something better? and if so what could i get for under 200 buks?
Optical drive: I will also be keeping my old one for this build. i have a Lite-On DVD RW SATA, so i wont need this for awhile.
Ok, so thats it..i will appreciate any advice you guys can give me on this so far. thanks
P.S. ok i realized i may have put this in the wrong forum..im sorry im new
anyhow, just wanted to add that, and also,. as far as the OS i am plannig to keep Windows XP (sp2) Simply for financial reasons, and also, it seems much more stable, and less hassle than vista, and when/if i do upgrade, it will probally be to Windows 7 ( in other words, no DX 10 for now, but is it THAT much differnce?)
moreVoting Question: Can my computer handle a processor upgrade?
I am graduating soon, and I will hopefully get money (hooray for me). Anyway, I was going to buy a new processor for my computer. I currently have a 1.8GHz single core, and I want to upgrade to at least a 2.0GHz Dual Core. My computer is really old, so I am not sure if it can handle it, or not. (It was made in 2005). Socket 939.
