Open Question: Should I go for the Canon EOS 1100d or the 550d?

I am upgrading from a point and shoot camera and am comparing the two of these. The 550d is more expensive, but I'm not sure whether the upgrades are worth the extra money. I'm going to use this camera for general photo taking and for photoshop and stuff like that :) On snapsort it says that the 550d has lots of advantages over the 1100d like 'more dynamic range' and 'significantly higher true resolution'. As a beginner will I really notice the difference?? Hi, I looked at representation of age and wrote an essay (Winter 2009) in preparation for tomorrows media studies exam for Section A: TV Drama. I will be so happy if you could tell me how to improve or how my essay sounds, what grade I could get. In this clip from Monarch of Glen, I will focus on how age is represented. The clip begins by showing people in the scene work. Mis-en-scene is used to show the different people live in the town together and how the age is represented throughout the clip. Amy is dressed in casual; jeans and a shirt, which doesn't reveal her actual age, therefore she seems to fit in with the others. However, there is a stereotyping of the headmaster by an elderly man wearing a smart suit who seems strict. He doesn't look friendly and this conflicts later with the grandma stereotyping; woman represented as gentle, soft and caring. Her kindly approach is later shown in the clip, when Amy decides to run away. This suggests, how tough and uncontrolled Amy could be and grandma is protective and caring over Amy. Camerawork is used throughout the clip to represent the age and also used to reflect characters feelings to the audience. There is a tilt of the camera; from Paul's face to Amy's to show their reactions, when the headmaster reveals Amy's secret; she is 16. The scene is followed by Amy and Paul arguing and over the shoulder shot is used to highlight the significance of each character, Amy looking small compared to Paul; he is strong and an adult. Dialogue supports this representation of age in 'Monarch of the Glen' by Amy acting very immature and says to Paul: I hate you. It once more reminds us that she is only 16 and haven't finished her exams. Before her secret of age is revealed in the clip, Amy's approach to answering questions and her short answers hints us that she could be lying. The close up of her face as she says she could drive creates a mystery. There is a use of diegetic sound of cars engine as she gets ready to drive. Viewers later understand that she has no idea of what she is doing with the car; followed by her intake breath and ' clutch, accelerator' as these words she is unfamiliar with. Sound mix is followed by equipments Paul use at back of van, to the over exaggerated sound of car crash. This creates panic in the scene as the boy runs to Amy and her face reaction changes as she sees the headmaster. Within the same scene, as people learn she is 16, the way she is looked at suggests she feels lonely and is an outsider. Editing is used in the clip as shot reverse shot from each characters face back to Amy's to portray the shock in the scene. Shot reverse shot is later followed by direct actions and Amy's self reflection in the mirror. This is a significant point in the whole clip as she is lonely. We see a close up of the photo next to the mirror, representing Amy and other people are all together; they are her family. Overall, this explains clearly to viewers why she keeps running away and she acts immature and not responsible in other characters eyes. In a place of adults and elderly, she doesn't seem to belong there, therefore her age ruins her dreams of happy family, all portrayed in one frame. Her age suggests, she is still a young girl who values the meaning of a family and cannot be in control at times as she hid her feelings, up until to the last scene in this clip of Monarch of the Glen. more

Resolved Question: Do CCD camera sensors offer better color than CMOS sensors?

I've been comparing pictures from the Canon SX40 HS (a CMOS sensor) and the Canon S95 (a CCD sensor), and I consistently notice that the S95's pictures seem to have greater color depth. The colors look more vibrant, and maybe a higher range. The pictures from the SX40 look pale or washed out by comparison. However, the SX40's pictures look crisper to me. The processor on the SX40 is a DIGIC 5 vs a DIGIC 4 for the S95, so if it seems it would have to be the sensor type (CCD) that gives the S95 the leg up for color range and vibrancy. Do CCD sensors give better color? Do CMOS sensors get a crisper image? (It may be just a better lense on the SX40.) I also looked at pictures from the T3i (a CMOS), and a lot of them look more washed out color-wise than the S95s, but some of them do look very close to the S95. I almost hate to ask this because it seems very obvious to my eyes, but I would like to know if anyone else noticed the same or what. I have looked at the differences detailed between the two types of sensors, but this was not one of the things mentioned. Resolved Question: taking pictures of the sun?

I am wondering if there is any possible way to take a decent picture of the sun using mylar eclipse glasses and a point and shoot camera. I can visually see a sunspot but with a crappy (compared to a professional one) camera I know I probably won't be able to get anything decent. Any tips? I have a telescope in my storage but I don't think dinky eclipse glasses would help there. Just looking for any small tips that might improve my ability to take a picture of the sun. Thanks. more

Voting Question: My husband is driving me mad - is he going to cheat?

We've been married for 3 years (bit of whirlwind romance before). He's been married before (12 years, wife left him for another man). We are both late 30s. We each have an adult son, and we have one toddler together, and had another baby daughter, who died late last year. He'd always been faithful (so he says) in his previous marriage, except for having threesomes (which really worried me when he told me). The other night he told me how good I looked (I'd dressed up), then went on about how I couldn't expect to compete with younger women. He then told me (after sex) that in 10 years I wouldn't have any men looking at me anymore, as I'd be too old, but proceeded to say how he'd be looking still. One day he'll say I'm beautiful, then the next he says that I'm the best he can get. I guess I am, but it hurts that I'm just what he can get, and in truth he fantasises about hotter women. He's not really as attractive as other men I've been with, but I don't compare him, or think he'll 'do'. If I did, really, think he was the only man I could 'get' then I'd rather be single. Chatter bounced off the mahogany panelled walls, guests milling about on the balconies and sipping from their champagne flutes. They often peered over the intricately carved railings at the stage below, pitying the boy who sat isolated on the glaringly lit stage. In front, Jace’s soldiers sat rigidly in their cushioned seats, eyes shaded by their glossy helmets. They had been waiting for three hours for the ceremony to begin, but hadn’t shifted from their positions since they had filed into their chairs. Behind them was a sea of empty, velvet chairs and crimson carpeting. Pillars of dark marble lined the walls and cherry tapestries swung from each before finishing with a loop around the cold stone. The hall was a luxury compared to the dull basics that most of the city experienced, but those who had the privilege to be invited indulged in such extravagance every day anyway. Most households wouldn’t dream of owning such silky dresses in their closets; the women on the balconies donned in every colour of the rainbow and glittering with jewels that were allowed to so few. The only ones not dressed to impress were the guards who stood at the back of each balcony like a statue, their guns sleek in their holsters. 'This is a waste of time'. Jace thought, raking a hand through hazel coloured curls. The whole ceremony was on hold for that one person, but the hundred spectators and thousands eagerly glued to their televisions didn’t dare to grumble. It had amused Jace at first that no-one risked attracting the attention of the guards that silently protected them, but as the heat cranked up under his best suit the private smile had slipped from his face. Tilting his head back, he squinted as the lights glared in his ash tinted eyes; the flecks of gold in his irises glinting. Suddenly, the screech of tyres pierced through the hubbub. As one, heads jerked towards the door. Scurrying back to their assigned seats, there was an excited intake of breath as marching footsteps got louder and louder. Jace braced himself in his seat. The Shutterbugs aimed their cameras, flashes glittering in the darkness as the lights were dimmed. Fast paced music began to play, dramatic recording booming through the hall as everyone scrambled to their feet. It was the typical anthem that played in these events, the same instruments used every, single time. Jace stood sluggishly, stretching his legs and smoothing the wrinkles in his trousers. The doors crashed open. Tuxedoed bodyguards stormed through the doors, thick soled boots marching down the aisle. Approaching the podium, Jace shuddered as one turned to face him. Or at least he assumed that the milky white eyes were trained on him. Her bodyguards were dangerous, yet chosen specially for their disabilities. Most were either blind or deaf, but this wasn’t much of a hindrance to them. Jace had never seen one bodyguard alone, always working in a group as one person. Icy shivers shoot down his spine. The men parted. They bowed their heads as their President stepped lightly onto the stage, refusing the hand proffered from her guards and head held proud. Jace stretched his aching legs, smoothing the wrinkles from his suit. Phoenix approached the podium, the sea green fold of her dress cascading to the floor and rippling like a wave. Nothing in the room glittered as bright as the diamonds peppering her fair curls like stars, her simple self a pure embodiment of the insane opulence that the select nobility in the city indulged in. Jace felt the ravenous eyes drink in their leader. She was the perfect figurehead, but nothing could mask her youth. “Welcome, people of Crux.” Phoenix smiled into the microphone, slender hands gripping the altar. “As you know, we are a city to be proud of. Our homes are safe, our children are well and our families wholesome.” Her seventeen year old lips spat the last word with distaste and scepticism. No-one batted an eye, but many had heard the rumours that had been hissed from ear to ear. Her history was shadowed, her heritage a mystery. Any criticism or comments will be much appreciated! Before all of the actual sh*t went down, me and the guy had sex behind the stairwell no one goes through.. We thought we got away with it. But, we was caught sexting.. It was at school.. On our phones.. And the text-catcher caught all the messages and the 2 principles read it all. Both of them called me and the other guy to the office and read it to us and gave us a lecture, THEN both of our PARENTS, [my new ones], had to come in and get told what's going on by US and WE had to read the messages we sent to each other, word for word, to all of them. Omg. Terrible. The messages were pretty detailed, too.. Then, they ended up finding out about the us having sex from one of the messages we'd sent.. She, the principle, then went to the cameras in the stairwell and they got to watch EVERYTHING of what happened.. They'd make such nasty facial expressions and whatnot.. I felt like dying. I can tell they'll never let this go and or forget about it. When we both got sent back to finish up 6th period, with our phones taken, the teacher came up to me and said "Don't you ever let someone man handle you. Sexting and sex is a very harmful thing. It could put you in danger. Don't EVER turn into what your mum was!".. The story behind the "don't ever turn into what your mum was"? My mum, who's dead, was a prostitute and she did a lot of drugs and whatnot.. I have a feeling all of the teachers are gonna act strange around me, now. :c Honestly, it might not sound that bad, but it was! The consequences at home and school are horrible.. I'm not aloud to talk to or be around the guy at school, or we'll both get in extremely big trouble. I'm not allowed to see him outside either.. Plus, our schedules got changed, so that we have no more classes together. That's not even considered bad, compared to the rest of the consequences. Pretty much, I dunno what to do. My parents are both giving me the "silent treatment", but at random times they'll just b*tch at me. My mum's the most hurt one, who knows why she's hurt. I've seen her cry today, a few times. Also, I've heard them talking sh*t about me. And OBVIOUSLY, they can't handle the fact that I'm bisexual.. Yes, me, a guy and another GUY were sexting!? Oh my god, it's the end of the god damn world. Resolved Question: Recovering anorexic, having some insecurity issues, please help?

I'm 18 years old, and I am currently receiving treatment for anorexia. Like many girls and women suffering from eating disorders, I am extremely insecure about my face and body- even though many people tell me that I'm beautiful. My problem right now is my boyfriend's ex girlfriend. Now, this has NOTHING to do with jealousy involving my boyfriend. She was with him for ten months, and after they had been broken up for about five months, we started dating and have now been together for over a year and are happily in love. I know that he wasn't happy when he was with her, and I don't doubt how much he loves me. My issue with this girl is that she is my complete opposite as far as looks go; she is 5' 8.5", blonde, very fair, clear skin, big blue eyes, perfect teeth. I am 5' 4", long black hair, light brown skin, brown eyes, my skin isn't terribly covered in acne. It's the average amount for a teenager, but it's been bothering me a lot more lately because of stress and insecurities. And as far as teeth go, mine are perfectly fine except my front right tooth is pushing forward, which I will need to fix eventually. To top it all off, she is a model. Not a big time model, but she's working herself up. She's had a few photoshoots, and the girl is stunning. I find myself obsessing over her pictures, facebook, and tumblr. I have tried so hard not to, but I can't help it. I don't know why, and I've gotten over the fact that I'm being a "creeper" because I know I'm not the only person in the world who does this. She is just so much prettier than I am. I've made bad lifestyle choices, and I feel like if I loved myself more and treated my body better, then I would look so much younger and healthier. The only problem that I have involving her and my boyfriend is that I feel like his standards have gone down by choosing to be with me. I know she is lovely, but he's told me that he thinks that I'm so much prettier, that she was too skinny, her hair was too thin, and she didn't make him happy. When I try to take pictures of myself with my nicest camera (I'm in photography school) I feel like everything about me looks wrong. But for her, she looks flawless. I can be very photogenic, but I feel like when I really need a picture to make me feel beautiful, it always makes me feel worse. I try not to punish myself because of this... I have come such a long way in recovery. But I cannot stop obsessing over this girl. I've tried staying off of her websites and obsessing over her. I haven't told my boyfriend this because it's just too strange. All I want is to know that I'm beautiful, and respect that she is too without losing my mind over it. I have nothing against her, and I'm happy for her that her dreams are coming true. But I can't shake the thought of her out of my mind. I'm tired of feeling bad about myself when I see a picture of her. I'm tired of comparing myself to her because I can't see how beautiful I really am. All I want is to let it all go and continue to learn how to heal and love myself for everything that I am. But it's so hard when she's always crowding my thoughts. What do I need to do? My nanny watches my babies while I go to work. The problem is that when I'm at work they spend most of the morning around 2 hours or more asleep! while on weekends, they are so fussy and cannot sleep, not even for one minute, neither mornings nor evenings, I'm starting to think that the nanny is slipping some sleeping pills or sirops in their milk. This feeling is driving me crazy! I asked a doctor if I can test their blood, he replied that it's so hard to detect sleeping substances in the blood coz there are millions of sorts and lab specialists need some name or brand to compare to, otherwise they wouldn't know where to start from, is it true? I have nanny camera (she's aware of its presence), but any sleeping substance can be put in the bathroom, while hiding the bottle in her clothes, and I cannot put cameras in the bathroom! The reason for me to apply for this job is to understand what is really means to be an 'Assistant Photographer'. I have read online and asked some people, but the answers vary from people ages 14 with almost no experience at all to people aged 50! Here is my experience as a photographer. One year in Photoshop and Photography Courses. Two years since I started shooting with a DSLR. Half a year in Photomatix. I have also joined a Club for Filming and I'm the main cameraman there I use a Nikon D3100 and two lenses, and I'm an addict in cameras and photography. Every where I go, I always take my camera with me. I just love cameras! I guess it runs in the family, my uncle and my cousin are very good in the photography field. I understand that I have very little experience compared to other applicants, but I can assure you, with my enthusiasm for cameras and photography, I'm up for the job. Voting Question: What was the first movie or TV show that featured this overused, cliche shot?

Hello, Breaking Bad is my favorite show on TV but I have one complaint. At least once a season it features a shot which was cool at first but is so overused that it is becoming kind of a joke (like the first time you heard auto-tune in a song compared to the ten billionth time you heard it). This is the shot: a character is walking towards the camera and away from a house or a car. The house or car explodes and the the character doesn't flinch or anything, they just keep walking. I've seen this four times in Breaking Bad, in the movie No Country for Old Men, in a commerical for one of those CSI shows (the one with David Caruso putting on sun glasses as the car explodes), in both The Simpsons and American Dad, and several others. There was a kind of parody of this shot in The Dark Knight where the Joker is walking away from the hosptial, he thinks it is going to explode behind him but it doesn't. He stops and turns around to look and then it explodes and it startles him. It was a cool shot but it's even cooler/funnier when you consider how it's a play on a cliche action-movie scene (I read that Heath Ledger improvised the turning aroung and banging on the detonator part). Anyways, this shot is becoming as cliche as the "Which wire do I cut to detonate the bomb?" or the shootout in the house of mirrors scenes that were so overused that they became jokes. Does anyone know in what movie or TV show this "Car exploding behind the unflinching guy" shot originated? more

Resolved Question: Looking for a good camera for beginning photography.?

I'm looking for a good camera for beginning photography, something with a lot of options for different types of pictures. With my budget all I can afford is something under $400. I take action shots (i.e: sports and while running like the girl on the movie 'Yes, Man'), close ups of nature like flowers, objects in the distance, and just everyday shots of people and things. And also I simply don't know much camera talk and don't really know how to compare cameras like a nixon to a canon. I was looking at a Nixon Coolpix S9300 but I was confused with comparing it to other cameras. Voting Question: Which DSLR is better? The Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR Camera or Sony SLT A57?

This will be my first DSLR, but I do have a bit of experience with DSLR's so I'm not really falling into something totally new, but there are still many things yet to explore for myself in this field. A majority of what I will be shooting is still life compared to sports shots. I understand that Canon has a significantly wider ranger of lenses, but I honestly only see myself buying me one or two more lenses ever so it's not a big deal. On top of taking stills, I want a camera with solid video capabilities and have heard many mixed reviews, each saying that the sony shines or the canon shines. Obviously I'm quite torn and although I am aware that both meet in a similar quality range, I want to make sure this long term investment I'm going to make is everything I wanted.I'm aware that sony is a SLT, which gives it advantages and disadvantages. I feel however that Sony is really rising as serious competitor in this market, especially seeing as how their translucent mirror technology is what cannon is planning on implementing in later models.@Crim Liar You're mistaken. The Sony can take video for as long as the memory card allows it, another advantage of it being an SLT. more

My mom over reacts over stuff a lot. Yesterday, she came into my room to give me some clean clothes to put away. She saw my bed which was fixed and said "thank you for fixing your bed, I appreciate it" and no joke, literally 3 seconds later, when she sees that my dresser has like 2 things out of place (normally everything is on this wooden platform but I had my camera off to the side) she started freaking out and started lecturing me about how she cleaned my room earlier and it's all messy. Everything else about my room was fine, I just had a few items moved on my cabinet. And then she said "well does your friend have a messy room too?" I said yeah, then she said "well I don't care about your friend." Why would you try comparing me to my friend, then just shut down the statement when you know it's not going your way? And in my bathroom (we have separate bathrooms) there was rubbing alcohol and toilet paper on the counter, and again, she started freaking out. She told me to put all the toilet paper away, and put the alcohol under the counter, and she randomly said "are you having an attitude"? My mom makes it out like I'm a terrible kid, I've seen people say they hate their parents and shit. If I said something like that my mom would probably kick me out (which isn't legal for my age but she's threatened it before). I'm not a bad kid, and I barely have any friends, so I'm either in the house, or just skateboarding by myself down the street. Is it just me or is my mom over reacting? more

I just got mine today in the mail - used - for 160. I want to love it, I really do, and I gave the Playbook OS a chance - but it's just awful. No Netflix, no Kindle, no Skype, its just... really? Voting Question: Should I wait for the Samsung Galaxy S3 or just buy the Nexus while the price is low?

I am due to upgrade on May 14th. My guess is that the Galaxy S3 will be out around the end of May. I know the specs are scarce right now, but based on experience, does anybody have any real problems with the Galaxy Nexus or should I wait for the Galaxy s3? I like the price of $199, and with the discount mine would be $149. I am worried the S3 will be far overpriced. I could pay $299 which would be $249 with the discount, but anything over that seems ridiculous to me. Do people foresee the S3 being over $299? And is the Nexus a fine phone enough to be satisfied with it? Is the camera good? the 5mp worries me...I know there isn't much to compare too, so I guess my main question really is, is the Galaxy Nexus a good phone to be satisfied with for 2 years? Will an average user enjoy it? I have a droid X which was great except for the camera freezing up and the huge keyboard glitch that google never fixed with updates. If the Galaxy Nexus is good as it stands, then I will buy it. But if it is glitchy then I might just wait for something else like the S3. more

Resolved Question: Can you help me find a good laptop for school?

I currently have a Dell Inspiron 1501 that my brother passed down to me. It's old, pretty big, and is running an unofficial version of Windows 7. It's also a 64-bit system, fyi. It runs pretty fast (although being my first laptop, I have nothing to compare it to). One of the biggest complaints I have is that when multitasking, or playing Minecraft or some other graphics-intense program, it freezes and/or crashes - leading to a hard-restart. A family friend recently gave me his daughter's old Dell Inspiron 1525. This laptop is running a 32-bit version of Windows Vista, and is beyond slow. Since it was stored in his closet for a couple years, after booting up and installing 60 or so updates, doing a virus scan/clean, and deleting old useless files, it still runs slowly. I will be putting 32-bit Professional Windows 7 on it soon, but can't believe it will run that much faster. So, I think I'll just buy a new laptop. I have a few criteria: -Reliable -Good graphics card -Decent battery life (oh yeah, my 1501's battery is shot) -Camera -Windows 7 -Plenty of space -Capable of handling many programs open at once So, if you stuck around to read through this whole thing, can you give me any advice? more

Resolved Question: Samsung Galaxy SII or Sony Xperia S?

I'm looking to buy a new cell phone and I think I have narrowed the choices down to either a Samsung Galaxy SII (who I am told will drop en price once the new one comes out soon) or a Sony Xperia S (Why is the Ericson part not included here?). They er both in a price range I can manage, have a fairly good camera and looks nice. However, I have no experience with smartphones of this kind, so I have no idea what of those two are the best. My biggest attraction is for the Xperia because I have had a lot of Sony Ericson phones in the past and I like them, and I also like the look better than the Galaxy.
