Voting Question: Is this financial aid appeal letter convincing?
I am requesting financial aid appeal from my university and have to write a letter with supporting documents. It's easy to get the documents but I need help with my letter. In addition I'm meeting with my dean and major advisor to attach a schooling plan to my letter. Any help is appreciated, thanks. :)
---
My name is X and I am an undergraduate requesting for appeal for financial aid. I was informed that it was suspended because I have not met the Satisfactory Academic Progress for the past two years.
In the fall quarter of 2008, I was hospitalized and diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, which caused me to withdraw from school early on in the quarter, leaving me a GPA of 0.0. This medical problem of mine easily has serious flares when I am under stress, and I have to receive medicine every six weeks to keep my condition stable.
In the fall quarter of 2009, I received a 1.92 GPA due to poor decision=making. I originally wanted to change my major to Biological Sciences, but by the middle of the quarter, I could not handle the classes and my fluctuating health began to flare under the stress. By the end of winter quarter of 2010, I had to be hospitalized again from a Crohn’s flare, which forced me to withdraw again, this time from spring quarter of 2010.
During the time of my withdrawal, I decided to take some classes at X College over the summer to see what major I should pursue. After further contemplation, I took French 1 and Cultural Anthropology and received As in both classes: this shows that I do have a strength in linguistics, which is also a major that I became interested in.
My goal is to graduate with a degree in linguistics as soon as possible so I can graduate on time, but I need financial aid to help me since I cannot easily afford to attend school. I understand that financial aid is a privilege, but I am serious about my education. Thank you for considering my appeal. If I can be of any further help on the appealing process, please do not hesitate to contact me as soon as possible. I sincerely apologize for any inconveniences.Edit: after people have told me stress problems might not make the letter appealing, I decided to edit it. Please do honestly tell me what you think. :)
New paragraph edit:
In the fall quarter of 2009, I received a 1.92 GPA due to poor decision-making. I was still in the process of wanting to change my major and took classes that I thought would interest me. When I decided to take science-related courses, I ended up getting low scores. By the end of winter quarter of 2010, I had to be hospitalized again from a Crohn’s flare, which forced me to withdraw again, this time from spring quarter of 2010.
During the time of my withdrawal, I decided to take some classes at the Santa Rosa Junior College over the summer to see what major I should pursue. After further contemplation, I took French 1 and Cultural Anthropology and received As in both classes: this shows that I do have a strength in linguistics, which is also a major that I became interested in.
moreResolved Question: Who cares about the Hunley (confederate submarine)?
(Below is a list of all the wack-jobs that care about this old wreck on the losing side (The South) taht would have kept blacks in slavery akin to the apartheid that enslaved South Africa. Now the so-called Friends of the Hunley have their hand out so that they can raise money for this decrepit wreck. And I can't believe that the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigations) a law enforcement agency is supporting an activity that probably is in support of the KKK,The League of the South and other spin-off organizations such as the sons and daughters of the confederacy. The GBI needs to re-open it's books on unsolved murders of blacks and civil rights workers and all the unsolved lynchings and those not brought to justice. It even sickens me further that police officers like myself would stoop to be a friend of people that once hung black people from trees, see below the name of the GBI on the Friends of the Hunley I wonder if the Director of the FBI would allow this!!!)

moreResolved Question: What can you do with a Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology?
I am really curious as to what you can do with this degree. The University of West Florida actually has a highly regarded program and it says on their website the Biological Anthropology specialization students do internships at the Escambia Country Medical Examiner's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to get on the job training. Would this be a valuable degree or a waste of time?

moreResolved Question: Confused about what to take in University?
Confused about what to take in University?
Hey everyone!
I'm going into grade 11, and I know that before I know it, it's going to be time to go to University.
I'm still having difficulty figuring out what I want to do though.
I'm interested in Anthropology (Social Anthropology, to be more specific) and Sociology.
And I'm also, currently, a LGBT rights activist, and really interested in Women and Gender Studies.
I guess Social Work would encompass these disciplines..?
I'm also a big medical nerd very interested in healthy, mental functions/disorders, social behaviour etc, so, Psychology it very interesting to me too.
I know I have a bit of time, but I'm really confused.
Did you have trouble figuring out what you wanted to do in University?
How did you deal with it?
I understand these are all kind of similar but, I'm still confused. Oh geez !
Thanks in Advance!
moreResolved Question: Can I Get Into UPENN? Opinions please?
I'm a home-schooled RISING Junior, planning on going to college for premed. I would like to get into the University of Pennsylvania (it's my "dream school" so to speak.)
Do I have a chance at U Penn? What more can I do? I AM out-of-state.
Classes I've taken/taking (9th and 10th grade):
-Anatomy and Physiology (TWO year program), Nutrition, Health, Microbiology, Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Advanced Psychology, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Consumer Math, Advanced U.S. History, Advanced World History, World Literature, British Literature, Debate, Grammar and Composition, Vocabulary, Format Writing, Writing, other assorted writing/English material, Human Geography, Introduction to Geography, Photography, Keyboarding/computer, Latin & Greek Word Roots, Medical Terminology (online and textbook), Art, Anthropology, Advanced/Honors Macroeconomics, Ancient Latin, Spanish Literature, Spanish language, Spanish history and culture-
Extracurricular Activities:
- Since I want to go to medical school I volunteer at a hospital, shadowed a doctor,
- Spanish language club,
- Pilates/Yoga class,
- Dance class,
- Youth For Understanding volunteer (helps place foreign exchange students),
- babysit part-time, and have a part-time job (yes, most colleges consider a job an extracurricular).
Now I know this isn’t a lot but I live in a small town in a pretty rural area (there's more cows here then people, seriously :-/) so I’m doing the best I can.
Facts:
3.99 GPA (No, my mother does not grade my work, a non-relative does)
Member of the National Home School Honor Society (just like the Nation Honor Society)
I got a 90 (out of 100) on the COMPASS Writing Test.
I haven't taken the ACT/SAT, but on the practice tests I did very well!
This summer I'll be helping out with the summer reading program at my local library. I will also be taking Advanced (like honors) Biology with lab and Latin.
BTW: I can NOT take AP classes where I live (they only offer 3 at the Board of Ed. And the tests are over 3 hours away!) but by the time a graduate I will have taken Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, Honors Physics, Honors Pre-Calculus, Honors Calculus, and Honors German language.
ALSO, I have completed lab work with both my biology and chemistry courses.

moreVoting Question: I want to go to medical school but didn't apply to the pre-med program at my university?
I'm going to be a freshmen a the University of Pittsburgh, main campus, in the fall. My major is biology. I realize that you do not need to be in a pre-med program to be accepted to medical school, but I feel that it would be more adventitious to have access to the advisors. Can I still apply to the pre-med program?
Also, would it benefit me more to major in anthropology rather than biology to stand out to medical schools? I would much prefer anthropology, but I've always been told that bio and chem are good "solid" undergrad majors for those planning on medical school.
moreResolved Question: University Freshmen Year Screw Up: Can I still reach for Med. School?
I'm not one for excuses so I'm prepared to face reality head on. Due to medical problems, coupled with sheer stupidity on my part, I screwed up BIG Time this year.
My current GPA is a paltry 2.2. That said, the maximum I can ever get in University, if I continue to get A's in all the classes that I have to take for my major, is a 3.8.
My main concern is because of these mistakes I have made this year, does this put me out the race to medical school? Is it worth it to even keep it as a goal or am I just fooling myself into thinking I can do it?
The major I'm considering as of now is Anthropology, only because I'm truly passionate about the subject material. However, it doesn't lend a lot in terms of a back-up plan.
Answers would help. A lot. Please and thank you!!!
moreResolved Question: Is a 3.7 gpa good enough to get into medical school?
I am currently a a four year university student majoring in Biochemistry. The reason I don't have a 4.0 is because my freshman year I really messed up. My grades my freshman year were 2 As in Health and medicine and Psychology. 3 Bs in Biology, English, Anthropology, and 2 C's in Precalculus and Calculus I. But after my freshman year I have been getting straight A's. I have even taken Calculus II and III and gotten As in those classes. I never went to a community college right after I graduated high school for two years. I went to a big university and was kind of caught off balance my first year. I know my freshman year grades are horrible but will the admissions committee for the medical school I want to go to (University of Illinois at Chicago) take into account that it was my freshman year.
p.s I am going to get my bachelors degree in biochemistry with about a 3.72 from the University of Illinois at Chicago and I want to go to the University of Illinois at Chicago medicals school.

moreResolved Question: careers which one is the best? nursing, law, or education?
I'm 21 years old, a college senior soon to graduate, double majoring in psychology/anthropology. My freshman year, I intended to be a biology major with hopes medical school. I had difficulties adjusting to college life/dorming, and as a result my grades suffered tremendously. After that I transfered, with the bio hopes still intact. But at that university, I didn't feel I was challenged enough. So I transfered back to my original college, just a different campus....where I picked up my grades and hopefully, I'll be graduting with a 3.5+. I'm a Psychology/Anthropology major, because I really didn't know what else to major in. I grew tired of Biology, and science and I realized I did not have the dedication for the medical school route. I've always been interesed in humans, how we think, our cultures, our origins, etc. But now I feel like these majors, in todays world, are somewhat irrelevant.
I really wish that I had chosen a program when I had applied to college. I could have graduated next year with a masters and bachelors together, had I enrolled into some type of program.
Now I think that my plan is to take a year off after graduation and try to find a job to pay back some of my loans from school and to gain some experience.
I'm really thinking between three possible career paths, but I have different considerations that I'm kind of confused with. These are teaching, nursing, and law.
I do substitute teaching now, and I really enjoy the school setting and elementary kids. I've also worked at some summer camps, and I just love kids. It never feels like a job at all, and I feel very young at heart. But my dad is a high school teacher, and he's kind of deterring me from the teaching setting...he says its difficult work and not so respected as much as it deserves to be.
The next possible choice is nursing. Nursing is also demanding, and not as respected as it deserves to be. Honestly, nurses are the ones who do all the dirty and hard work. Doctors come in for a few minutes, but nurses are the ones who do pretty much all else. I could enter a program and turn my bachelors into a BSN in nursing in around a year or two. I'm also an EMT and a very nurturing and patient person. If I did nursing, I'd love to work with neonates or pediatrics. But I tend to get easily intimidated by people of a higher authority---like doctors and such. And i'm kind of beyond the whole science route....but nursing can be rewarding, healthcare promises job stability, and the money is good.
Finally, I've been considering law. I think I can be very persuasive and an adept writer. I love to read and write, and if I entered law, once again, I'd want to work on behalf of children's rights, and women's rights.
Some of my considerations before picking a possible career are that, I still live at home. At this point in my life, I'm feeling very grateful but stifled living at home...and I really wish to get out into the world on my own. But I think if I got into law school, I'd have to live at home for 3-4 years. I'm not sure a teacher's salary would give me the financial freedom I need to pay back my school loans and live at home, and I'm not sure if I can snap back so easily into science after studying the humanities for so long...my mind has kind of switched gears...but if i settled into nursing, I'm very studious and committed so I can do it.
I've been in school for my entire life, with no breaks in between. Graduate school is an eventual plan, for sure. I'm planning to take a year off to really think about what I want to do, because up until now, I've always been indecisive and changing my mind. I really want to make sure that I've figured everything out, instead of going to grad school for teaching for example, and then deciding I want to do law.
Any suggestion would be greatly welcome and appreciated. Especially from teachers, nurses, and those in the law setting. Thank you!!!
moreResolved Question: I really want to get into Medical School...are the classes I'm taking in High School good enough?
I really want to make sure I get into medical school. Being a doctor has always been my dream, but I know that getting accepted is never a sure thing. To prepare, I've taken the following classes so far..please take a look at it, and let me know if it's good enough, or if there's any way I can improvise:
(Freshmen to Junior)
-Spanish 1, 2, 3 Honors
-Algebra 1 and 2 (regular)
-Geometry (regular)
-Trigonometry Honors
-America History 1 and 2 Honors
-Anthropology Early Enrollment/Honors *College credit
-English 2 Honors
-British Lit Semester Honors
-Shakespeare Semester Honors
-Biology Honors
-Physical Science Honors
-Physics Honors
-Chemistry Honors
I'll be taking the following classes next year (as a senior):
-Western Civilization Honors
-English 4 Early Enrollment/Honors *College credit
-Anatomy and Physiology Honors
-Physics 2/Biology 2/Chemistry 2 Honors--> only one depending on which is available
-Genetics (semester)
-Calculus Early Enrollment/Honors College credit
-Spanish 4 - Early Enrollment/honors College credit
I would really appreciate some input as I am very serious about pursuing a career in medicine! Also, what classes do you think I should take in College? I plan on going to a state University.

I know it can be difficult to get into JHU. But do you think I have what is takes to get in? What are my chances? What more can I do? I would consider applying Earl Decision.
Classes I've taken/will be taking (9th and 10th grade):
•Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, Health, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Physical Science, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, U.S. History, Advanced World History, Debate, Human Geography, Biology, Advanced Psychology, Chemistry, Grammar, Grammar and Composition, Vocabulary, Keyboarding/computer, Format Writing, Writing, World/English Literature, Introduction to Geography, Consumer Math, Medical Terminology (online and textbook), Art, Anthropology, Advanced Macroeconomics, Ancient Latin, German language, German history and culture•
Extracurricular Activities:
Since I want to go to medical school, I volunteer at the hospital, shadow a doctor, tutor kids at an elementary school, library (work with the little kids), YFU, cancer advocate (team captain), Habitat for Humanity (during the summer), dance, take pilates and yoga, I’m in a German club, Knitting club, and book club which I founded.
FACTS:
4.0 unweighted GPA.
PLAN (preliminary ACT) score was 30 out of 32.
I'm also in the National Home School Society (like the National Honor Society)! (:
Over the summer in between Sophomore and Junior year (summer 2010) I'll be taking a couple courses at my local Community College to become a certified Phlebotomist and will be working in a funeral home as an assistant. I will also have a job as a waitress.
*Junior Year: I'll probably be doing Biology research at a university.
BTW: Just so you know, I live an a very small town, I can NOT take AP classes where I live (they only offer 3 at the Board of Ed. And the tests are over 3 hours away!) but by the time a graduate I will have taken Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, Honors Physics, Honors Pre-Calculus, Honors Calculus, and Honors German language.
Thanks for all your opinions and advice! I will pick a Best Answer. (:

moreResolved Question: I want to be a doctor. Any college help?
I'm going to be a sophomore but up until yesterday, I had absolutely no idea where I wanted to go to college. I know I want to be a doctor, (specifically a gastroenterologist) but I don't really have any backup plans.
I typed in what colleges were good for becoming a doctor and these four colleges came up:
-Columbia University
-UCLA
-Seattle University
-University of San Francisco
All of my classes averaged together came to an 89.953 but my school is stupid and won't consider that an A. I got all of the necessary classes I need to graduate over with freshman year, and took an advanced english class. Next year, I'm taking an advanced english and advanced chemistry. I also signed up for an anthropology class, because it was the closest medical class my high school offers. I did not join any clubs or sports freshman year, but I do volunteer work with the Y and play an instrument. I had perfect attendance too.
I know being a doctor is all math and science and in biology, my average grade throughout the year was a 93 and my final test was a 97. I scored the highest in my class.
Math on the other hand, was challenging for me. I struggled with the Algebra final, but I heard Geometry next year is suppose to be a lot easier. I used to be in advanced math classes until Algebra came along.
Anyway, I heard these are all very good schools, but I need people to be realistic with me. Do I even stand a chance? I hear colleges look for straight A students who play multiple sports and join clubs and have all advanced classes.I've always wanted to become a doctor ever since I was little! I just started looking for colleges recently.

moreResolved Question: Can you get into med school with any B.S. ?
I'm looking at going into medicine, but my passion is Anthropology. Will I still be accepted into med-school with a B.S. in Anthropology, with minors in Egyptology and Biology?
P.S. many of the courses my future undergraduate university offers for Anthropology are like 'medical anthropology' and 'biological anthropology'.I really enjoy medicine, don't misunderstand this when compared with anthropology, I've job shadowed for an entire year of high school, as well as voluntered all 4 years. It is something I wan't to do, I can do so much more good as an M.D.
moreResolved Question: Question about school courses?
I'm taking: Chemistry, Biology, English, a combined course on Anthropology Sociology and Psychology, Math, and French. All University level courses in grade 11. I'm also taking a co-op but don't know if it's the best idea for me academically. I want to be either a teacher or something to do with kinesiology or medical. Is a co - op the right idea for me?
moreResolved Question: Should I go away to college or save money at home?
Okay, this will be a bit long, but I think that is the best way to get a good answer for this.
I'm 17. I'm about to be a senior in high school. My school has what is called "dual enrollment" (I'm not sure if this is offered in other states). Basically, a student is able to take a course at a community college instead of at the school and the school pays for it. Most students do about 1 course, but I am doing 4. So that means I go to high school for 2 hours in the morning, then leave and take my college courses 4 nights a week like normal community college classes.
I've heard this looks pretty good for colleges. Plus, I will be getting 13 college credits this semester and probably 12-14 next semester. I have also earned up to 6 credits through AP classes so I will have about 30 credits before leaving high school. The problem is, the AP credits will be towards government and english. The other credits will be for anthropology, nutrition, medical terminology, and sociology... I'm not sure of my major yet, so I don't know how many of these credits will apply.
After senior year, should I go to college or take my math, science, history, etc... general credits at community college and transfer? Or should I got to a nearby smaller university where I can live at home?
I have a 3.7, but I don't know if I will be able to get a scholarship. My parents can't afford to help me pay for college. I make about $700 a month, but I pay for my cell phone bill and food, clothes, etc.(I don't go shopping every weekend or anything like that, just saying I have basic expenses.) So I know going to a university will be hard to afford.
Also, I don't know what major I am interested in, so I don't know if I should go to a university yet.
At the same time, I feel like I would be missing out. I kinda want to have the typical college life. You know, roommates and dorms, parties, etc. The social aspect of college too. I would love to go to a big university or maybe even out of state. I really would like to move out and be more independent too.
Thank you for reading. Please give me some advice, I will choose a best answer. :)
moreResolved Question: what are my chances of getting into the university of michigan?
i'm only going to be a junior, but my high school has us thinking about colleges and career choices pretty early. i've always wanted to go to the university of michigan, and i want to know what my chances are if i keep going the way i'm going now.
cumulative GPA: 3.93
my sophomore year, i enrolled in AP chemistry, but i only scored a 2 on the AP exam. this year, i'm enrolled in AP english composition and AP government.
extra curricular activities include: choir, FFA, CERT [community emergency response team], NHS, fellowship of christian athletes, student council, and i've been the vice president of my class for two years, and i'm continuing all of this into my junior year.
i also was one of three students who started a tutoring program in my school through student council. in my freshman and sophomore years, i accumulated about 40 hours of community service.
during my sophomore year, i took the opportunity to take a class Eastern Michigan University offered at my school and i received three college credits in the medical field for it. in the spring semester, i dual enrolled at the local community college and earned three more college credits in cultural anthropology.
in the next two years, i plan on taking as many college courses as my school will allow while they're free.
i have not taken the ACT or SAT tests yet, but i took the COMPASS test for admissions at the community college. i scored at least an 88 in all subjects.
i know this is a lot to read, but please help me out.
what are some more things i should be doing to get accepted into the U of M? i know its pretty competitive, and that's why i'm trying to figure it out now. how well should i do on my ACT if i want to get accepted?

moreResolved Question: I have a "D" in one of medical school admissions requirements, should I even bother applying to schools?
I am currently a junior in college with a 3.6057 and I have a "D" in General Biology I from my freshman year! In all of my other medical school admissions requirements I have A's and B's. I am a Biological Anthropology & Neurobiology/Physiology double major and French minor. I am in great academic standing at my university, I had 6 months of research in a lab at about 15-20 hours per week, I volunteer in a hospital, an animal shelter with my younger sister, at church, and teaching children how to read. I have been begun preparing for the MCAT everyday for the last month. I do not intend to take it until next year, but I really think I should start studying intensively.
I have these four requirements left: Organic Chemistry II, General Chemistry II, Physics I & II. I do not intend on getting anything less than a "B" in those courses because I learned my lesson from that "D". Is there anything more that I can do? I am determined to apply to UCSF, Weill Cornell Medical College, and New York University: School of Medicine among many others, but I am worried because the reality is that I am a joke compared to the other students.
I am stressing out over what more I can do because that "D" is like small pox on my transcript. -_- Any advice?Well, I definitely will not forget applying completely even though it is so humiliating. I think my upward climb and my efforts to outshine that "D" should get me somewhere at least... If I am at a 3.6, I can only increase my GPA and graduate Cum Laude too! Does that mean nothing? This is difficult!

I hold a dietary and evolutionary non formal education. I claim to be one of the most unmeasurable intelligences in the world. I suffer a severe form of deductive reasoning autism due to environmental damages caused by this dietary screw up that nobody seems to be aware of. It has been documented over my life that I suffer severe intelligence dysfunction.
Now that I have fought against the medical system in the USA for 2 years with no light at the end of any tunnel, I am begging for help to bring the pure science of this issue to the attention of anyone who will listen.
It is easy for them to discredit me in the field of mental illness I have exhibit ted all my life. I have cured myself with pure genetic sciences. I have studies so many related topics to this issue, I know I am correct. I have read world wide University script on Aspergers, sociology, anthropology, immunology, psychiatry and psychology, and so much science, just keep thinking any word to do with ology and apply it to me!
What this can mean is such an increase in life span and mental and physical health to the species has been genetically documented and nobody seems any wiser to include the health care commissioner of the state of Connecticut.
HLA DQ2 80%. HLA DQ8 10 to 15%. This is the conclusive test, instituted by Dr. Alessio Fasano who teaches US doctors at the U. of Maryland in his home country of Italy.
