Resolved Question: careers which one is the best? nursing, law, or education?
I'm 21 years old, a college senior soon to graduate, double majoring in psychology/anthropology. My freshman year, I intended to be a biology major with hopes medical school. I had difficulties adjusting to college life/dorming, and as a result my grades suffered tremendously. After that I transfered, with the bio hopes still intact. But at that university, I didn't feel I was challenged enough. So I transfered back to my original college, just a different campus....where I picked up my grades and hopefully, I'll be graduting with a 3.5+. I'm a Psychology/Anthropology major, because I really didn't know what else to major in. I grew tired of Biology, and science and I realized I did not have the dedication for the medical school route. I've always been interesed in humans, how we think, our cultures, our origins, etc. But now I feel like these majors, in todays world, are somewhat irrelevant.
I really wish that I had chosen a program when I had applied to college. I could have graduated next year with a masters and bachelors together, had I enrolled into some type of program.
Now I think that my plan is to take a year off after graduation and try to find a job to pay back some of my loans from school and to gain some experience.
I'm really thinking between three possible career paths, but I have different considerations that I'm kind of confused with. These are teaching, nursing, and law.
I do substitute teaching now, and I really enjoy the school setting and elementary kids. I've also worked at some summer camps, and I just love kids. It never feels like a job at all, and I feel very young at heart. But my dad is a high school teacher, and he's kind of deterring me from the teaching setting...he says its difficult work and not so respected as much as it deserves to be.
The next possible choice is nursing. Nursing is also demanding, and not as respected as it deserves to be. Honestly, nurses are the ones who do all the dirty and hard work. Doctors come in for a few minutes, but nurses are the ones who do pretty much all else. I could enter a program and turn my bachelors into a BSN in nursing in around a year or two. I'm also an EMT and a very nurturing and patient person. If I did nursing, I'd love to work with neonates or pediatrics. But I tend to get easily intimidated by people of a higher authority---like doctors and such. And i'm kind of beyond the whole science route....but nursing can be rewarding, healthcare promises job stability, and the money is good.
Finally, I've been considering law. I think I can be very persuasive and an adept writer. I love to read and write, and if I entered law, once again, I'd want to work on behalf of children's rights, and women's rights.
Some of my considerations before picking a possible career are that, I still live at home. At this point in my life, I'm feeling very grateful but stifled living at home...and I really wish to get out into the world on my own. But I think if I got into law school, I'd have to live at home for 3-4 years. I'm not sure a teacher's salary would give me the financial freedom I need to pay back my school loans and live at home, and I'm not sure if I can snap back so easily into science after studying the humanities for so long...my mind has kind of switched gears...but if i settled into nursing, I'm very studious and committed so I can do it.
I've been in school for my entire life, with no breaks in between. Graduate school is an eventual plan, for sure. I'm planning to take a year off to really think about what I want to do, because up until now, I've always been indecisive and changing my mind. I really want to make sure that I've figured everything out, instead of going to grad school for teaching for example, and then deciding I want to do law.
Any suggestion would be greatly welcome and appreciated. Especially from teachers, nurses, and those in the law setting. Thank you!!!
moreResolved Question: I really want to get into Medical School...are the classes I'm taking in High School good enough?
I really want to make sure I get into medical school. Being a doctor has always been my dream, but I know that getting accepted is never a sure thing. To prepare, I've taken the following classes so far..please take a look at it, and let me know if it's good enough, or if there's any way I can improvise:
(Freshmen to Junior)
-Spanish 1, 2, 3 Honors
-Algebra 1 and 2 (regular)
-Geometry (regular)
-Trigonometry Honors
-America History 1 and 2 Honors
-Anthropology Early Enrollment/Honors *College credit
-English 2 Honors
-British Lit Semester Honors
-Shakespeare Semester Honors
-Biology Honors
-Physical Science Honors
-Physics Honors
-Chemistry Honors
I'll be taking the following classes next year (as a senior):
-Western Civilization Honors
-English 4 Early Enrollment/Honors *College credit
-Anatomy and Physiology Honors
-Physics 2/Biology 2/Chemistry 2 Honors--> only one depending on which is available
-Genetics (semester)
-Calculus Early Enrollment/Honors College credit
-Spanish 4 - Early Enrollment/honors College credit
I would really appreciate some input as I am very serious about pursuing a career in medicine! Also, what classes do you think I should take in College? I plan on going to a state University.
moreVoting Question: med school ? career in the medical field ? major in anthropology ?
I'm currently sixteen years old, full time college/high school student. My passion is, and probably always will be anthropology. I love every aspect of it, and I was hoping to major in Physical/Biological Anthropology, then go onto medical school. In the past year, I have become extremely concerned about my future, especially since I am in college now. Medical school is so expensive, and I'm not the best at math. (Today I even think I failed my math final) When I graduate from high school (in 2011) I will have enough credits to transfer to a major university from my current community college. However, my question is realistically, what are my chances in succeeding in the medical career if I go this route (majoring in anthro then going to med school) ? I've also been thinking about becoming a physician assistant ? (But I heard that you must major in Health, get your BA then later go to PA school) Is this true ? Thanks for your advice :)
moreResolved Question: Can I Get In? Opinions Please(:?
I'm a home-schooled sophomore (in high school obviously), planning on going to college for premed. Right now I want to major (maybe double?) in either Biology or Psychology and minor in communications. I really like the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign it just seems like a perfect fit for me (semi-close to home [I am out-of-state though], great academics, research opportunities, good med school, etc.)
Do you think I have what is takes to get in? What are my chances? What more can I do? I would consider applying Early Decision.
Classes I've taken/taking (9th and 10th grade):
-Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, Health, Microbiology, Physical Science, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Advanced/Honors U.S. History, Advanced/Honors World History, Debate, Human Geography, Biology, Advanced/Honors Psychology, Chemistry, Grammar, Grammar and Composition, Vocabulary, Human Geography, Photography, Keyboarding/computer, Format Writing, Writing, World/English Literature, Introduction to Geography, Consumer Math, Medical Terminology (online and textbook), Art, Anthropology, Advanced/Honors Macroeconomics, Ancient Latin, German language, German history and culture-
Extracurricular Activities: Since I want to go to medical school I volunteer at a hospital (candy striper), shadowed a doctor, German language club, pilates/yoga class-club, YFU volunteer, tutor young kids, and have a job as a waitress (yes, most colleges consider a job an extracurricular). Now I know this isn’t a lot but I live in a small town in a pretty rural area so I’m doing the best I can.
Facts:
4.0 GPA (No, my mother does not grade my work, a non-relative does)
Member of the National Home School Honor Society (just like the Nation Honor Society)
PLAN (preliminary ACT) score was 30 out of 32
Over the summer I will be taking Phlebotomy (the person who takes peoples’ blood for tests) at my local community college to become licensed.
BTW: I can NOT take AP classes where I live (they only offer 3 at the Board of Ed. And the tests are over 3 hours away!) but by the time a graduate I will have taken Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, Honors Physics, Honors Pre-Calculus, Honors Calculus, and Honors German language.
Thanks for all your opinions and advice! I will pick a Best Answer. (:Wow! It's so long, sorry about that!
moreResolved Question: What are my chances of being accepted into Grad School for (Cultural) Anthropology?
I will be graduating by May 2010 with a BA in Anthropology from a Cal State. I just applied to four Graduate programs for (Cultural) Anthropology: Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, and UCLA. Based on the following, what do think my chances are of getting into any of these programs?
>>Cumulative GPA 3.5
>>Fluent in American Sign Lanaguage (have worked as a professional sign language interpreter for six years at two Cal State Universities and various community colleges)
>>Have worked in various settings as an interpreter, including: mental health, elementary-high school interpreting, medical settings, religious ceremonies
>>Plan to study the Deaf community for MA thesis
>>Average scores on the GRE
*Thanks in advance for responding :)

moreResolved Question: I want to be a doctor. Any college help?
I'm going to be a sophomore but up until yesterday, I had absolutely no idea where I wanted to go to college. I know I want to be a doctor, (specifically a gastroenterologist) but I don't really have any backup plans.
I typed in what colleges were good for becoming a doctor and these four colleges came up:
-Columbia University
-UCLA
-Seattle University
-University of San Francisco
All of my classes averaged together came to an 89.953 but my school is stupid and won't consider that an A. I got all of the necessary classes I need to graduate over with freshman year, and took an advanced english class. Next year, I'm taking an advanced english and advanced chemistry. I also signed up for an anthropology class, because it was the closest medical class my high school offers. I did not join any clubs or sports freshman year, but I do volunteer work with the Y and play an instrument. I had perfect attendance too.
I know being a doctor is all math and science and in biology, my average grade throughout the year was a 93 and my final test was a 97. I scored the highest in my class.
Math on the other hand, was challenging for me. I struggled with the Algebra final, but I heard Geometry next year is suppose to be a lot easier. I used to be in advanced math classes until Algebra came along.
Anyway, I heard these are all very good schools, but I need people to be realistic with me. Do I even stand a chance? I hear colleges look for straight A students who play multiple sports and join clubs and have all advanced classes.I've always wanted to become a doctor ever since I was little! I just started looking for colleges recently.

moreResolved Question: Should I go away to college or save money at home?
Okay, this will be a bit long, but I think that is the best way to get a good answer for this.
I'm 17. I'm about to be a senior in high school. My school has what is called "dual enrollment" (I'm not sure if this is offered in other states). Basically, a student is able to take a course at a community college instead of at the school and the school pays for it. Most students do about 1 course, but I am doing 4. So that means I go to high school for 2 hours in the morning, then leave and take my college courses 4 nights a week like normal community college classes.
I've heard this looks pretty good for colleges. Plus, I will be getting 13 college credits this semester and probably 12-14 next semester. I have also earned up to 6 credits through AP classes so I will have about 30 credits before leaving high school. The problem is, the AP credits will be towards government and english. The other credits will be for anthropology, nutrition, medical terminology, and sociology... I'm not sure of my major yet, so I don't know how many of these credits will apply.
After senior year, should I go to college or take my math, science, history, etc... general credits at community college and transfer? Or should I got to a nearby smaller university where I can live at home?
I have a 3.7, but I don't know if I will be able to get a scholarship. My parents can't afford to help me pay for college. I make about $700 a month, but I pay for my cell phone bill and food, clothes, etc.(I don't go shopping every weekend or anything like that, just saying I have basic expenses.) So I know going to a university will be hard to afford.
Also, I don't know what major I am interested in, so I don't know if I should go to a university yet.
At the same time, I feel like I would be missing out. I kinda want to have the typical college life. You know, roommates and dorms, parties, etc. The social aspect of college too. I would love to go to a big university or maybe even out of state. I really would like to move out and be more independent too.
Thank you for reading. Please give me some advice, I will choose a best answer. :)

i'm only going to be a junior, but my high school has us thinking about colleges and career choices pretty early. i've always wanted to go to the university of michigan, and i want to know what my chances are if i keep going the way i'm going now.
cumulative GPA: 3.93
my sophomore year, i enrolled in AP chemistry, but i only scored a 2 on the AP exam. this year, i'm enrolled in AP english composition and AP government.
extra curricular activities include: choir, FFA, CERT [community emergency response team], NHS, fellowship of christian athletes, student council, and i've been the vice president of my class for two years, and i'm continuing all of this into my junior year.
i also was one of three students who started a tutoring program in my school through student council. in my freshman and sophomore years, i accumulated about 40 hours of community service.
during my sophomore year, i took the opportunity to take a class Eastern Michigan University offered at my school and i received three college credits in the medical field for it. in the spring semester, i dual enrolled at the local community college and earned three more college credits in cultural anthropology.
in the next two years, i plan on taking as many college courses as my school will allow while they're free.
i have not taken the ACT or SAT tests yet, but i took the COMPASS test for admissions at the community college. i scored at least an 88 in all subjects.
i know this is a lot to read, but please help me out.

moreResolved Question: I have a "D" in one of medical school admissions requirements, should I even bother applying to schools?
I am currently a junior in college with a 3.6057 and I have a "D" in General Biology I from my freshman year! In all of my other medical school admissions requirements I have A's and B's. I am a Biological Anthropology & Neurobiology/Physiology double major and French minor. I am in great academic standing at my university, I had 6 months of research in a lab at about 15-20 hours per week, I volunteer in a hospital, an animal shelter with my younger sister, at church, and teaching children how to read. I have been begun preparing for the MCAT everyday for the last month. I do not intend to take it until next year, but I really think I should start studying intensively.
I have these four requirements left: Organic Chemistry II, General Chemistry II, Physics I & II. I do not intend on getting anything less than a "B" in those courses because I learned my lesson from that "D". Is there anything more that I can do? I am determined to apply to UCSF, Weill Cornell Medical College, and New York University: School of Medicine among many others, but I am worried because the reality is that I am a joke compared to the other students.
I am stressing out over what more I can do because that "D" is like small pox on my transcript. -_- Any advice?Well, I definitely will not forget applying completely even though it is so humiliating. I think my upward climb and my efforts to outshine that "D" should get me somewhere at least... If I am at a 3.6, I can only increase my GPA and graduate Cum Laude too! Does that mean nothing? This is difficult!

I hold a dietary and evolutionary non formal education. I claim to be one of the most unmeasurable intelligences in the world. It has been documented over my life that I suffer severe intelligence dysfunction.
Now that I have fought against the medical system in the USA for 2 years with no light at the end of any tunnel, I am begging for help to bring the pure science of this issue to the attention of anyone who will listen.
It is easy for them to discredit me in the field of mental illness I have exhibit ted all my life. I have cured myself with pure genetic sciences. I have studies so many related topics to this issue, I know I am correct. I have read world wide University script on Aspergers, sociology, anthropology, immunology, psychiatry and psychology, and so much science, just keep thinking any word to do with ology and apply it to me!
What this can mean is such an increase in life span and mental and physical health to the species has been genetically documented and nobody seems any wiser to include the health care commissioner of the state of Connecticut.
HLA DQ2 80%. HLA DQ8 10 to 15%. This is the conclusive test, instituted by Dr. Alessio Fasano who teaches US doctors at the U. of Maryland in his home country of Italy.
We as a species are now a known race of celiac potential people. Why is Codex still advising the FDA for us to eat the poisonous grassy diet of the herbivore?

moreResolved Question: can you please check if there is any grammar problems and if it looks good? thanks?

May 18, 2009
Dear Appeals Committee:
My name is [name]. I came from [country] in 2003. I attended Mills Middle School then I transferred to Cordova High School. I worked very hard in high school because not only I had to learn everything what the teachers gave me for homework, but also I had to learn English. My favorite subjects in high school were biology and English. After four years of high school, I got accepted to Sacramento State University.
I was not frustrated of taking LS 86 because I knew I had to improve my English skills. LS 86 really helped me to get prepared for LS 87. After I successfully passed LS 86, I took LS 87. The class was great. The professor was very enthusiastic about class. Her explanations and stories were awesome. I learned a lot from this class but there is a lot to learn too. I know that I have problems with development of essay but I get a lot better with it. My grammar is mostly good. Also I got a lot better with verb tenses. In this class, I learned about different verb tenses, like Perfect Continuous and Progressive Verb Tenses. The most challenging essay in this course was National ID Card. It really got me thinking about the consequences of what would happen if the card would be lost. I had a lot of ideas but the time was limited to write the essay which was the hardest part. My favorite essay was Novel Essay because I read the book and it was easier for me to write about it. In general, I liked this course because not only I learned a lot but I also met very nice classmates.
My goal for the future is to become the best doctor. Currently, I major in Biology and Nursing. I took Nursing as a backup plan. My priority choice is Biology major. I will have to finish university first, go to medical school and then take residency. I am not sure yet of which kind of doctor I want to be, but I was thinking to become a Dermatologist.
I think I am ready for the next level. I improved more with my English and essay skills because I revised all the essays and did all the work on time even though I had other very hard classes. My spring’s schedule was Psychology 5, Government 1, Biology 1, Anthropology 2, and LS 87. I will be very happy if the committee will let me move on to the next level so I could pursue my goal of becoming a doctor. I understand that I may not be as great as a native speaker but I am improving every time.
Thank you for your consideration,

moreResolved Question: How do you re-enter the workforce after 7 years as caregiver?
I worked 10 years at a university in the South as an illustrator and graphic artist - excellent work record. My Mom had late stage Alzheimers, and Dad was falling apart from old age, and my older sister had been caring for them and was about to collapse, and was about to quit her corporate job of 25 years to be full time caregiver -- and I just couldn't do that to her. For us personally, nursing homes, etc are out of the question - it's just our family value. So I pulled up stakes :-( and moved back, and planned to freelance. It was an exhausting ordeal, but both of my parents' got their last wish: to die in their home.
I knew this was going to have consequences for me personally in the future, and I have hit the brick wall. Not only am I re-entering the workforce after 7 year "absence," but I am 50 years old, in a field dominated by young people, and there is a major recession on. Despite my skill set and experience, I haven't gotten a single nibble for a job in my field. I have been applying for secretarial and receptionist jobs, and not a nibble there either. I can't even get a temp job. I am now applying for counter-help and cashier jobs - and just pray something comes through.
I contacted an employment agency, hoping to get into their pool, and explained my problem with the 7 year "gap," and they said they couldn't help me, as employers are insisting they send over only folks with unbroken work records.
I have begun writing into my cover letters that I was a caregiver -- haven't put it into my resume yet -- should I?
I have a BA in anthropology (had planned to go for PHD). I am SO willing to train for another line of work -- some kind of medical assistant thing -- but I don't have money for a community college course(s).
I am not a bad person - I have a lot of talents (art, writing, copy writing, research etc) and loads of experience, and used to have a successful career.
My freelance contracts are drying up. My clients are having the same troubles I am -- they don't have money either.
Sorry for venting, but I am very scared. Yes, it was my choice to be a caregiver, but I don't think that is a bad thing to have been, but boy oh boy!! -- it's like I have leprosy.
How shall I handle the "gap" in my resume?
moreResolved Question: I think I may have redefined celiacs, how do I prove this?
To make a long story short, I am a celiac, I have suffered a powerful and long term sprue due to sheer medical misdiagnosis. I am self diagnosed through genetic science. I carry the hLA DQ8 marker.
After 42 years of non diagnosed celiacs, I went on a gluten free deit. What happened to me afterwards, was a shocker. Not so shocking that my stomache ailments had left, but what was shocking was the changes that happened in my mind. I had no idea, that I would ever again, have clear thought like I had before puberty.
All my life has been riddled with anxiety and insecurity. now, all of a sudden, I had clear confidence. I did not realize what had actually happened. I had cured a large part of the asperger autism, I had suffered with, for most of my adult life.
Now, armed with the mind that was a misdiagnosed mild idiot, strong savant, was no longer controled by lack of social graces. The class clown had finally grown up. Afterwards I realized that I was left with an amazing learning curve.
I was left with the self challenge of redefining celiacs. I think now I have it. I have studied under Dr. Peter Green, Dr. Alessio Fasano, Dr. Kenneth fine, and other university level studies done on celiacs.
I have combined smaller studies to most of the celiac related dysfunctions and other fields also. I have studies definitions of asperger autism, I have studied definitions of psychiatry, anthropology, immunology, and pharmacology.
Universities contributing to my studies are global. Saporro, Cambridge, University of Brasil, and studies done around the world by simply clicking the English option.
How does one formally mentally challenged person, gain respect of the people who could never diagnose him?
How can I be heard from my little berg in my little corner of the world?
