Open Question: What can I do with a Bachelor Degree in Cultural Anthropology?
Please, help me! I am in my second year of the BA in Anthropology, I need to know what can I do with a BA! I am from a poor family so I don't have money to pay the MA and the PhD, so I need to know what can I do with the BA.
Thanks!

moreResolved Question: As someone who majored in Anthropology, do you think you would need one on an extrasolar spaceflight?
Though the term Anthropology is the study of man (Humans), would it be necessary to have a PhD (No, I only have a B.A.) in Anthropology to survey a planet if they had indigenous people (not being Homo Sapiens of course)?
I mostly dealt with Evolution and New World Archaeology. Don't you think Archaeology would come in handy if the Astronauts found ruins on an extrasolar planet?
...and yes I watch too much Star Trek.I have watched Stargate.
Wouldn't it be prudent to have Biological Scientists on a space flight to an extrasolar planet that we discovered life on?I know we haven't had man flight beyond the Moon. hopefully one day we'll actually visit Mars and actually leave the Solar system and head to Alpha Centauri or some other system.
moreVoting Question: How do I tell my parents that I want to join the military?
They are not against the military they just want to keep me safe. I am going to be a senior in high school and I am the youngest of three in my family and i am the only boy. They say that I am too intelligent to do something so stupid (I have a 4.0 and have been on the honor roll so far and would get a Phd in Physics a Phd in mechanical engineering and a masters in anthropology) I don't regard it as stupid just something that feels right to me like give a little back to this country. I would want to do ROTC for Marines or Army, they said I maybe could do the AF, and I have always wanted to fly but my eyes are too bad. I don't necessarily want to pull the "I'm 18 and so it's my choice" considering they paid nearly $50,000 in total for my high school education and will most likely help me pay for college.
Any Ideas? Thanks! With my family no one in 2 generations has joined the military so it is a little hard to say that i wnat to join especiall being the youngest.
Mainly my mom doesnt like the idea

moreResolved Question: What are the best jobs for a person with a M.S. in Physical Anthropology?
I am planning to get a M.S. in Physical Anthropology, my B.A. will have a minor in Forensics. Job wise what are my fallbacks with this level education.
Some side notes, my main goal would be to work in the field in some capacity, or possibly work a Junior College and do field work in my time off. I may pursue a PHD at some point later on but lets assume I don't get it straight off the bat. (as that's my current plan)

I am asking what are the types of places that hire them.
moreVoting Question: Pursuing accounting/CPA career with irrelevant BA?
I will have my BA in anthropology/archaeology this December. I really love the subject and would have ideally liked a career as an archaeologist. However, as any archaeologist will tell you, there are very few job opportunities and the pay is generally low unless you have PhD and become a professor. I don't want to become a professor. I would like stable career, in a field with many opportunities. I would like to pursue a career as an accountant and eventually CPA. I've only taken one calculus course and one economics course while in college. Does any one know how I can get on track? Should I get a second bachelors in accounting? I was thinking of a MS in accounting but the program requires 8 prerequisite courses. Should I takes these as a non-degree student at a university or through a community college. Or would some sort of certificate be more appropriate. I would appreciate responses from others who successfully become accountants/CPAs after getting a bachelor's in an unrelated field.
Thank you

moreResolved Question: I think a con man is priming my friend...?
My friend is well educated with a little bit of family money, but is over weight and kind of vulnerable right now. I think she has met someone who is conning her.
He has told her that:
1) His family owns one of the largest ranches in the US
2) His dad and brother both have 2 master's degrees
3) His brother is in army intelligence, so he can't be in the peace corp
4) He is running a winery in NM
5) He works as a xeroscaping specialist all over the southern US.
6) The people who are paying him to run the winery are going to pay for him to get a PhD in wine making in California, upon which time, he'll buy a 300,000 plot with his and his parents money to open a winery/game preserve for hunting.
7) He owns a house in Albuquerque but she can't visit it (they hang out at her one bedroom dorm apartment instead.
8) He was offered a Captain's commision in the US army special forces but turned it down to continue with his xeroscaping.
9) He has a BA in anthropology, history and something else from a state school in NM. ( I think this is at least partial true).
He doesn't seem to want to sleep with her, but I'm concerned that his parents may "say no" to some of the 300,000 property. He has mentioned that he only needs a small fraction of the money to buy it outright. I'm concerned that she will "invest" some of her money into his land, thinking that they are a couple and that this is a good investment. She has not met any of his friends, been to any of his properties, or seen anything beyond is motorbike and his older model car.
I've checked with the Peace Corp and it seems that having a brother in intelligence would not eliminate him, but she didn't believe me when I told her this. Hopefully, she'll check for herself and realize that I am not lying. Is there anyway to see who owns the largest ranches in the US? I think if I coud prove that he was lying about this, she would take a more serious look at what is going on. She's a very intelligent and rational person.
She doesn't have any family and is in a vulnerable position. If she loses the money left in trust for her, she will be in serious trouble. He knows that she doesn't have many friends or family and that she has family money. Any advice on how to find out if his family does own a large amount of ranch land or has a very large ranch? There is actually a program in California, but I think he is trying to get to her inheritence. If he gets that, she's in big trouble. I'd rather lose her as a friend than see her lose her home and have to drop out of school.
moreResolved Question: What career could I pursue if I want to study diseases but I don't want to be a nurse or doctor?
I have a BA in Anthropology with a concentration in physical anthropology. Even though I really love the subject, now that I've been out of school for a few months I've realized that I have to be more realistic if I want to get a good job (and I'm not willing to go for a PhD.) So I applied to some MPH programs and I was accepted. However, I picked Social/Community Health as my concentration because I thought it'd be easier for me to get accepted into that concentration (since I don't have a strong natural sciences or math background.) Even though I find this area interesting, I know it's not great in terms of salary. Before I wouldn't have cared about this but since I've been out of school I've started to realize how important it is to have a job that pays well.
I've thought about switching my MPH concentration to epidemiology or doing an accelerated BSN program for second degree students. I find epidemiology extremely interesting but I've never been great at math (although I did get an A in biostatistics in college and found it interesting, albeit somewhat difficult at times.) I'm not too crazy about nursing because I don't care too much for patient care and I've heard it's stressful and requires crazy hours. However, I know it pays really well and I've read that there are many opportunities open to nurses that don't involve patient care (but it's competitive.) I also don't feel like going through the whole application process again (especially since I've already been accepted somewhere) or taking the prerequisites required to get into an accelerated BSN program either.
I feel really lost and I don't know what to do. I'm interested in studying diseases (how they are spread and prevention...I'm especially fascinated with global health.) If someone knows of a career that fits my interests and that pays well, or has been in a similar situation as mine, I would really appreciate any info or advice!
moreResolved Question: What to do with a BA or higher in anthropology?
PLEASE help me. This is the third time I've asked this question, and I have not gotten a single answer thus far. I really need some career advisement. I need to know what my options are once I get my master's or PhD in anthropology, and which specialties therein, or related ones, are available to me.
I've decided that anthropology is the only thing I'm really interested in studying. The thing is I have no idea where to take it. Part of me wants to study primitive cultures in the Pacific, part of me wants to go into forensic anthropology and identify long-dead bodies for the police, and part of me wants to study the evolution of human sexuality... I just have no idea! Those aren't even a fraction of the things I'd like to do with an anthropology degree! For the record, I'm only 21 credits into my AA, so the sky's the limit right now. Any suggestions? Please. My life plan depends on it.
Also, will I be doomed to a barely-pays-the-rent income with my degree?

moreResolved Question: If I obtain a Master of Divinity and a PhD in Evolutionary Anthropology will I be able to find a Job?
I want to get a Masters of Divinity and a PhD in Evolutionary Anthropology, but these two degrees together in the eyes of some professionals in either area are contradictory. I don't personally believe they are because I believe that there is no reason for conflict between belief in God and Science(in this case evolution). I want to be able to do both and show people that the two don't have to conflict, but will I be given any credibility by professionals in either area? I have a strong belief in God, I am a christian, but I also believe in evolution. I am currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in anthropology. I am a United Methodist, so I am looking at Duke's Divinity School and their Evolutionary Anthropology program. I am looking for insight from United Methodists, Professors (the fields listed above or any field), and any combination of the two. When answering please state which of those two you are or if you just want to share your opinion. Thank you because I need the guidance.I should make something a bit clearer. I don't believe in a literal translation of the Bible. I believe that God is almighty and powerful and therefore the Bible was written to help us understand basic principles and morals. Science has not proven that there is no god they simply don't believe. There does not have to be conflict between religion and science, unless you are someone who believes in a literal translation of the Bible. I do not. Faith for me will always be essential because I don't think we will ever know the answer to every question. To me God lies outside the realm of science and the pursuits of man because we cannot possibly comprehend God. I by no means believe God literally created everything in 7 days as we see them.
moreResolved Question: will a master's degree in biology or geology let me travel for research?
I don't think it's naive or childish to still (i'm in college, undeclared major) want to be an explorer/researcher. I know that I want to go into a scientific field but I'm unsure if I should choose geology or biology as my major. I will eventually go on to get my master's and maybe even phd in due time but right now I'm trying to decide which will let me travel more. I would LOVE to do some research on the asian rainforest plants or even the secluded ancient cities in the asian rainforests. Either that or the Arctic to study the ice and ocean or the arctic life.
So what do you think? Biology -> Botany or Toxicology OR Geology -> Anthropology or Glaciology

I am currently a psychology and anthropology double major at Michigan State. I am looking to apply to PhD programs in the Fall but I don't know which program will allow me to do what I want to do. I am interested in social psychology research but would like to apply it to children. I would also like to do research on different techniques of learning and education. After doing research for a few years, I would really like to go into private practice. What PhD degree can I get in order to do all of that? School Psychology, Educational Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Clinical Psychology or something else? I would also like to do research on preschoolers but work with children of all ages in private practice.

moreResolved Question: Purely for interest with no predetermined objective?
So many opinions on the standard no applied B.A. or arts degree you hear in the classic social sciences, I think this is the best.
Communication platform, both oral and written, fluidity of language with journalism as a common exit point. Learning skills that you can apply to any arts orientated environment to enrich your experience of life. In fact in some countries the only degree recommended before entering business or a company. From archeology to anthropology, sociology to business or politics, and always the opportunity to take applied units from just about any other course available. The main precursory degree to Masters of Business or switch to a Law degree, once you have picked up the basics of study, and work becomes relaxed. Always opportunity to do voluntary work for reputable international organisations with the hope for full time work over time. Plus the exposure to a range of PhD's who offer mysterious tips to solve your questions within the science and academic craft. Sometimes it takes a couple of dropped units or attempted courses at universities before you find local culture of inspiration and respects personal liberty.
Do you guys have any tips for someone looking to apply for an arts degree, the appropriate entry to appreciate the academic craft and go on to define yourself?

moreResolved Question: Humanities M.A. to PHD in Anthropology?
I have finished my bachelors with a 3.0 GPA (I really slacked the first year) in Health Sciences with a concentration in management. I chose this major because most of my work experience has been in Health Care, but now I want to study what I really like, Anthropology. I am currently enrolling in a Humanities Masters program in order to enter a competitive Anthropology PHD program with a 3.8-4.0 graduate GPA.
I chose the Masters in Humanities because it was the most flexible and convenient program that fit my current living and work situation, while allowing me to study subjects in Anthropology.
Any suggestions? critiques? Advice? Thanks in advance!I would like to teach and do research.I am not too worried about the job availability aspect after graduation. I have a back up plan just in case. A bigger priority is getting the most out of my education and making the right decisions.
moreResolved Question: Penn or Cal for anthropology?
I attend the University of Western Australia and I want to eventually earn my PhD in anthropology.
I am doing a BA double majoring in anthropology and archaeology. I was born in St. Louis and I am a dual-national, so I can can easily go to the US for a year of exchange.
UWA has formal exchange agreements with many US colleges, including Berkeley and the University of Pennsylvania.
I love San Francisco and probably want to live there eventually, and Berkeley is one of the best anthropology schools in the world. There are also so many anthropologists at Berkeley who I'd kill to meet, like Nancy Schepper-Hughes.
But then Penn is an Ivy, so it'd be so great to go there for a year. There's so much history and culture and I'd get to network with some of the world's future greats. And Penn doesn't rank too far behind Cal at anthropology.
Any suggestions would be great, by people who either go to one of these schools, know a lot about anthropology or just have a strong opinion.
moreResolved Question: archaeologist PhD and options after?
Hello, first off thank you ahead time for every ones answers. I'm going to college to get a degree in anthropology and I intend in going into archaeology. I plan on studying abroad for a summer and my major place of interest is Greece. So my question is after my PhD, I want to work in the fields, take photos, etc but I'd like to be able to write journals or papers about my pictures and findings. And was wondering what'd be best way to go about it, and if this idea would work. Money is not a thing of matter to me, I just care about learning and writing, I can live off low income.
moreResolved Question: Forensic Anthropologist?
Alright, so I know that I'm going to get a lot of responses telling me to think about going into something different, but that's alright.
Currently, I'm still in high school, but I dream of becoming a forensic anthropologist when I'm older working with the FBI. Yes I know this job is extremely competitive and most don't work full time. How many forensic anthropologists DO work full time with the FBI? If I were to go to an Ivy League (or equivalent) undergrad school and then got a PhD in forensic anthropology, would I even have a chance of becoming a full-time?
Thank you in advance.
moreResolved Question: realistically, what would you expect to do having finished an undergrad anthropology degree?
i've read heaps of the graphs and things that say the average wage for anthropologists, 99% of graduates from this course at college/university X get jobs within 6 months of graduation, etc, but I don't understand how many of those 99% get jobs in a related field, and how often they can expect promotion opportunities to arise, and how much they'll actually be earning..
So, I guess my question, in a nutshell, would be what the chances are of making a decent living in a decent job (not some sort of horrible 14 hours a day type thing, preferably) if I did choose to do this degree.
I intended to get a masters, and maybe a PhD later, but I'd like some work to be available with only a bachelor's degree, is that possible?
Thanks,
moreResolved Question: Was Buddha really a red haired white fellow? I heard he was from a high caste in Nepal?
I know that the Aryans were once from Europe. My people are great story tellers, so were they. My people love dairy products, and sadly segregate themselves in many situations. Well I wouldn't say sadly, because all cultures are ethnocentric. I had an anthropology professor who graduated from Chicago's famous anthropology school, that is similar to Etan, or Oxford in England. He was a Vietnam vet, he constantly visited Yemen to set up a museum about the Frankincense trail.
Anyway, this professor has been on PBS and the History Channel. His name is Dr. Jurus Zarins. He is Latvian, and English is his third language. He has no foreign accent though.
Make a long story short he said that white Europeans traveled to India. I had an Indian sociology professor who made the same statement.
My anthropology professor also said that if say someone like himself were to walk around Sudan, they people would look at him like he is an Alien from a different planet.
Enough of my blabbering. Was Buddha a white man who had no intermingled with the lower castes, and was therefore European in his ancestors origin? It shouldn't matter, but in a way it does matter. Buddha was a red haired white feller? And even my Indian sociology professor agreed with me, and he has a PHD also. I am but a lowly student with 80 credit hours and an overall GPA of 3.0.
I want answers from all people. I'd appreciate a source if anyone has one. And I'm not interested in revisionist history. I want the straight dope. Clean, uncut, no baby laxative.
I might be a little fat, but my eyes are blue gray, and I have alabaster skin. My hair is dyed dark burgundy, but it's really brown. It was blonde until I was around 5.You don't have to read my blabbering PPP, and right on with whatever your talking about. I really don't care much for Islam, or the Jewish faith, but that is my preference.
moreResolved Question: Grad requirements for anthropology and sociology?
I'm currently a social studies education major who will be graduating next December. I am also active in research and working on two articles for publication. I eventually want to become a researcher in the education or "youth" field and am looking into grad schools. My current research deals with social and cultural issues related to students or children in some way and I would like to continue and pursue those interests.
Therefore, I am considering a master's or PhD in anthropology or sociology. However, because I do not have an undergrad degree in anthro or soc, I expect I will have to meet some pre-reqs before starting grad school. Would anyone be able to provide any tips for what those may be?
My other concern is the language requirement. I noticed that many anthro and soc grad degrees require learning another language. First off, whatever research I plan on doing would be in the U.S. in a typical public school setting and I don't intend on focusing on ESL students. Second, I am already exposed to two other languages. One I can speak but can't read or write (ethnic language) and the other I can read but don't understand or speak (religious language). Point is, if I was to choose either language to study, I am quite sure I would have to begin with beginner level courses rather than being able to test out. I really don't want to study any languages as I don't feel its necessary for what I am interested in pursuing. So does one HAVE to learn another language in order for a grad degree in anthro and soc?

moreResolved Question: What is the 21st century understanding of micro-biology, genetics and design? It show there was a creator?
Evolutionary theory declares that everything has a mere appearance of design.
Biology is the study of complicated things that give the appearance of having been designed for a purpose.
He goes on to say:
...the living results of natural selection overwhelmingly impress us with the appearance of design as if by a master watchmaker...
In all other fields of human endeavor we find that "design necessitates a designer." Thus, design detection methodology is a prerequisite for many disciplines, including archaeology, anthropology, forensics, criminal jurisprudence, copyright law, patent law, reverse engineering, crypto-analysis, random number generation, and SETI (the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence). In general, we find "specified complexity" to be a reliable indicator of the presence of intelligent design. Chance can explain complexity, but not specification. A random sequence of letters is complex, but not specified (it is meaningless).
Remarkably, the SETI project, a multi-billion dollar effort to scan the cosmos for some indication of intelligence, is based on one simple notion. If we find radio waves that contain any type of ordered sequence of sounds, then we've discovered intelligence somewhere in the universe! Think about that? The whole premise of these scientists is that you can't have ordered sound (such as the blips and dashes in a Morse code transmission) without an intelligent force behind them. To me, that's huge!
Charles B. Thaxton, PhD in Chemistry and Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University, agrees:
" An intelligible communication via radio signal from some distant galaxy would be widely hailed as evidence of an intelligent source. "
Why then doesn't the message sequence on the DNA molecule also constitute prima facie evidence for an intelligent source? After all, DNA information is not just analogous to a message sequence such as Morse code, it is such a message sequence.

moreResolved Question: Which Branch of Anthropology?
I was just wondering which branch of anthropology you guys feel would have the most job opportunities and decent pay. I am really into history and would love to be an archaeologist. However, I have a bachelors in biology so I can get into an biological/physical/medical anthropology graduate program whereas I would have to get a bachelors in anthro first to get into a graduate program with an archeaology concentration. Having said that, I love history even more so then biology so I would be willing to spend more time in school.
I have read some about the different fields of anthropology and am not sure which one would be the best in terms of employment. For archaeology I read in addition to strict archaeology work, that you can be hired in natural resource departments due to your background in geology, not sure if that is true or not. I will be getting an MA or possbily PhD in any branch just to keep that in mind. While I like what I see about archaeology, it would be nice to also use my degree so I am very open to pursuing another branch of anthropology.
Thanks!

moreResolved Question: What careers can an Anthropology major pursue?
This is a purely hypothetical question at the moment, as I'm still in High school.
I have always been interested in Anthropology, all aspects of it- Cultural, Biological and Archaeology- but I'm worried that after four years of college (I don't want a PHD in Anthropology) I won't be able find a job or do anything with my degree. I would like to primarily work in the field, travel and help people. I'm interested in NGO's work too. Would it help if I minored/double majored in International Studies? Or are there any other useful majors that I should double it up with to increase my job prospects? What are my options?

I am very interested in biological anthropology and I always wanted to be a anthropologist, but this degree is not available here. I want to avoid moving because someone in my family is very ill.
Psychology and Sociology are both available at the local state university and I thought those are pretty close. What is the best alternative for me?
What is available here are BS in Psychology, BA in Psychology, BA in Sociology, do I have any other options? Can I still go for a graduate degree like a PhD? I want to be a anthropologist but now I am feeling so lost because all my plans had to change ...
moreResolved Question: Anthropology graduate's places to work?
I recently graduated from a University with a bachelor of science in anthropology. No masters or phd, not planning at this time. Where are some places similar people have had luck in employment. I prefer to hear from people whom were in the same boat as me. I don't know what to do. I keep sending resumes to companies that has nothing to do with my field just in hopes for a career start. Please help.

I am choosing my college major. If I choose BS in Psychology, can I proceed to a Masters or PhD in Anthropology after my degree or I absolutely have to have a Anthropology degree to qualify for the graduate studies?

moreResolved Question: Would I make enough money to live in a house and eat good food with a PhD in sociology?
I think my chances of getting accepted into medical school are pretty much over.
It took me three attempts to pass College Algebra, I'm failing Chemistry, and I just bombed pre-calc-trig mid-term.
My parents are going to be very dissapointed.
I always loved sociology, writing, analyzing social variables, etc. but until now I haven't considered pursuing it professionally.
In the two English classes, historical perspectives, the intro sociology course, and anthropology I passed with A's.
So it's not that I'm retarded, I am just very weak in mathematical applications.
I love sociology. More so than being a medical doctor and having to go through more math!!!
Would I be able to live in a house and never worry about where my next meal will be with a PhD in sociology?
moreResolved Question: Can I complete a Masters while pursuing a PhD in a different discipline?
I want to obtain a PhD in philosophy and was wondering whether I could complete a Masters program during the same time. I'd like to earn a Masters in evolutionary anthropology (or its equivalent).

Person A drools all over herself all day
Person B has a PhD in Fiduciary Anthropology
moreResolved Question: If Cushitic(horn african) people are black why is it their genetically closer to north Africans?
And Arabs? You know, a certain user tried making her own claims as if she has a phD in anthropology by saying they are black when she has no idea of their genetic make up, history or diversity and goes by her eyes, like most Afrocentrics. Why is it world renowned anthropologists like mathilda, Dienekes, etc. have all made the same claims that most have 60% Eurasian DNA while being indigenous to Africa? Afrocentrics like to believe that being indigenous to a continent automatically means you identify as a color. So please, explain to me why Cushitic people (Ethiopians, northern Somalis, Djibitoutis, Eritreans) are all E3b which is a sub-group of e1b1b, a medditterannean Caucasian haplogroup which includes all north Africans, Egyptians and gulf Arabs. Also, tests have shown them to have a close similarity with nordics especially cranio-facially even more closer than fellow Europeans, this all proven scientific FACT. Genetics, history and science doesn't lie. So why do you think you can argue with it?
moreResolved Question: Anthropology or Archaeology?
I'm very interested in becoming a cultural anthropologist or archaeologist. I'm not sure which one I'd like to do more though, because I'm still a little hazy on the details. I'm really interested in not only studying another culture, but going on archaeological digs. Would a cultural anthropologist do both?
Could you tell me the job descriptions of both? Which one would be harder to study, and would both require a Masters or PhD? What colleges have great anthropology or archaeology departments?
moreResolved Question: Do you see similarities to current American culture and the French culture just before the revolution?
I have a Bachelors in education, Bachelors in anthropology, a Masters in social education, and a PHD in sociology. I can not find another society who meets their culture model so closely. The French court a lot like our education system trained leaders to demand things that did not work and no one wanted. Their surface loyalty lasted about 50 years but then the improvements to printing made peoples complaints more organized. This led to a more informed and fueled society.
moreResolved Question: My chances of getting into a Sociology PhD program?
So here's the deal: During my undergraduate I took several sociology classes: Intro, Social Problems, Social Stratification, Social Statistics, and Anthropology. I ended up getting my undergraduate degree in Human Resources, and I have gone on after taking a year off school to begin work on a Masters of Education in Adult and Higher Ed (right now I have a 4.0). My GRE scores are not that great (average), but I did get a 4.5 in Writing. I think my research interests lie in the realm of Social Psychology/Sexuality/Gender related issues, and sociology might be a better fit for me. What are my chances of getting into a sociology PhD program? How much would it help me to take Graduate level courses in Classical Theory, Methods, and Stats before I apply? Is it necessary? What am I looking at here as far as deficiencies? Any advice would be great! Thank you!
