Resolved Question: Genetic Engineering Q: 1) If you could easily modify your personality DIRECTLY via G/E, would you do it?

...plus three more closely related questions: 2) Would you be willing to make at least some modifications at the request of your significant other (assuming that your significant other is willing to do the same)? 3) Assuming that the "genetic engineer" could deliver the goods (with few or no technical drawbacks) -- would the widespread availability of "G/E personality modding" be a net positive or a net negative for the individual? for the family? for society as a whole? Before you answer, please read and reflect on what follows below: Would you like to become more, or less, ... ...competitive, bold, daring? [Aries archetype] ...sensual, relaxed, grounded? [Taurus archetype] ...open, communicative, curious? [Gemini archetype] ...caring, nurturing, supportive? [Cancer archetype] ...outgoing, generous, warm? [Leo archetype] ...detailed, methodical, efficient [Virgo archetype] ...etc etc for the six remaining archetypes [Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces] I realize that a much larger set of more scientifically-determined archetypes could/should be used, I'm just using the astrological one for brevity and convenience here. THERE ARE SOME "CATCHES" -- two in particular stand out: a) The more traits you include, the less any one of them can predominate. Focussing too broadly on too many traits may lead to a degree of blandness, lack of distinction, confusion, indecisiveness, and/or lack of "character". b) The fewer traits you include, the less diverse and the more one-dimensional your personality will be. Focusing too strongly on too few traits may lead to a degree of instability, obsession, and/or other dysfunctionalities. Think along the lines of a "pie chart" or "pie histogram" -- where you can either have 12 equal "pie slices", giving you an equal amount of each personality "trait" -- OR -- where you can vary the size / intensity of each "slice" to favor certain traits over others. BUT you only get ONE whole pie to "adjust". 4) oh, and here's one final question. If you could ONLY put this question in ONE category, would you put it in: Philosophy, Psychology, Anthropology, Sociobiology, Biogenetics, Science Fiction, Entertainment, or ??? more

Resolved Question: My chances at SDSU for fall of 2010?

Alright, so I know you guys probably see a ton of these questions everyday, but I'm hoping you can answer just one more! So I have a weighted gpa of 3.83 and my SAT scores are: reading 630 math 460 writing 610. I didn't take the ACT, I got around 400+ for the spanish sat 2's and around 600+ for english lit sat 2's. and for the AP english language test i got a 4 and spanish lang I got a 2. I have taken about 9 AP/Honors classes all my years of high school. I did a lot of community service but it doesn't matter to the csu's so i'm not gonna post them. I am the first in my family to go to college. I'm from the san diego area, but not around the preferred sd area near the school. I know they admit you for your major this year, so i'm hoping that my major isn't that popular: Anthropology. What else? I put my stats up on mychances.net and it said I had about 70% chance..:[ and I talked to my college counselor who said I had about a 50/50 chance bc it's such an impacted school. I really really want to get in bc I want to stay here in SD with my family. So what do you guys think? more

Resolved Question: Could I avoid kissing in a relationship?

"According to various sources across the Web, kissing isn’t as universal as we might think. Anthropology.net explains that approximately 10% of the human population doesn’t kiss." My first boyfriend forced me to kiss and I hated it. All my life I've detested kissing (for myself). I think it's disgusting. So I'm part of that 10%. Would the boy/girl in my next relationship be okay if I wanted to forgo the kissing? Would you be okay with it if your bf/gf wasn't into it?"If you cant kiss your boyfriend then you shouldn't have one." I didn't love him. But regardless of that, I don't care for kissing. I can be affectionate in other ways that make more sense to me."Judging by ur avatar i would not be worried about that" ? more

Resolved Question: Navy question: Submarine service vs Aircraft Carrier?

I've been reading alot about the US Navy and am looking to join. Currently I'm going through a process for med waiver but have questions about positions. I read on the net about submarine service is totally volunteer and have thought greatly about it. Also aircraft carriers are also what I am interested in. What is submarine service like vs aircraft carrier duty? I would join up as enlisted and possibly try to be a yeoman or intelligence field because I have a masters degree. Is nuclear training difficult? I am not a numbers person but know lots about anthropology, psychology, management, foreign language, and leadership. Please provide any insight. To: Andrea Well I am thinking of enlisting for a couple years to get my feet wet so I can know the ropes. In simple terms become a team player. I would enter a program possibly from Enlisted to Officer. Yes it takes time but from my history I like to get to know the ins and outs of the organization so if I become an officer I will know the difference. I'm still trying to decipher what I want because I don't mind the cramped underwater of a sub because I am very adaptable. I have the heart of an adventurer but not a warrior. more

Resolved Question: does anyone know what the anthropology teacher in one of the first episodes of 90210 was talking about?

I was watching an episode of 90210 (one from the first season). A lot of this re runs are shown on soap net. Anyway one of brandon's love interest was a anthropology instructor. She was lecturing about relationships and men. For example she mentioned stages or reasons why men go through relationships, the first one is for sex at an early age then a second one than a third stage is companionship. i thought this was really interesting. What is she talking about? and what theory is she referring to? i think she mentioned Margaret Mead more

Resolved Question: economic anthropology?

I'm an economics student and I came across this interesting article about the anthropological background of econ. Could someone tell me how much of this article is BS? also your thoughts from an anthropology perspective. http://www.wanderings.net/notebook/Main/WhyUnderstandingEconomicsIsHardok here is the main part of the article that bothers me It makes sense. For hunter-gatherers in small bands, sharing, matching and ranking were probably as fundamental to survival as eating and breeding. But market pricing involves complex choices based on mathematical ratios. Commerce and global trade, of course, require a finely honed version of the market-pricing model. But if humans developed this model relatively late, it might well be less than universal, even today. "to have an intuitive grasp of economics, you might just need to take a step or two up the evolutionary ladder." how from an anthropological perspective can only part of the human species be "evolved" enough to do econ. As an economist it sounds like some sorta of seriously egocentric writing. more

Resolved Question: Does any of those people who still doubt evolution/natural selection...?

... has the remotest idea of what's going on in science nowadays? I'm not asking you to be a scientist, but just Google and pick up from the net a couple papers/essays on evolutionary psychology, biology, neuroscience, sociology, anthropology, ethology, emotions, etc... There are no published scientific papers/essays that are not written from an evolutionary standpoint. Nothing in the scientific realm such as biology or neuroscience would make any sense other than in the light of evolution. Even after Richard Dawkins the Selfish Gene Theory, almost no paper gets away without quoting and making some kind of reference to this theory. Either/both Darwin or/and Dawkins are quoted or referred to in almost any given scientific paper nowadays. Don't answer, go do research.Stupid, if something is non-material, non-physical or supernatural and doesn't come in touch with our reality is NOT part of our reality. If it does come into contact with our reality, then science can investigate it and figure it out eventually. more

Resolved Question: Good books on historic paganism?

I'm going out to Borders tonight, because I'm going to have a bunch of tests done and getting new blood tomorrow, as well as getting some muscles stretched and possible gallbladder removal if necessary. So, what are so good historical books on paganism, any area really, not so much modern reconstructionism as anthropology and archeolgy and history type books. I'm always looking for more to read, especially when I get stuck without net. more

Resolved Question: Why argue against evolution if you do not understand it?

Ok so not everyone agrees with it... Fine. I can deal with that. But it drives me nuts when people try to argue when they do not really understand it. Most argue saying oh so we came from monkeys, just magically came from monkey's... I do not know of one scientist that has actually said that. That MAY be where the chain started according to the theory but there are many links in between. There are only a few that we are missing. Obviously I believe in evolution ( Simply to much evidance to dismiss it). But I also believe in God.. something had to start the universe and I think it was him. or her lol. But please even if you do not agree with it.. do alot of research on it.. the best way to fight evolution is to understand it first. If your older and in colloge seek a anthropology class, you will find it intresting.. if not then look it up on the net ^_^. more

Resolved Question: why do vegetarians whine so much?

"You save lives if you become a vegetarian" Whoop dee do. I'm fully within my rights to eat whatever meat I want. You don't see me telling vegetarians that I think they are morons (although I advise against it), so why do they think they can imply we're murderers? Guess what, most species rely upon preying on other species, does that make them murderers? I'm not torturing the darn things, I'm not into that sorta of thing (for those that are, see "insane"). Oh, and for those that think that the vegetarian lifestyle is killing free: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=grill Just a little bit of advice, Maddox isn't bs-ing this. Stop whining and calling us killers, we have the teeth we have for a reason (don't believe me? go ahead and throw out anthropology while you're at it). I don't care if you want to become a vegetarian, just don't try and make me feel guilty about my diet (cause it won't work) once again: Why do vegetarians whine so much? (Sweeping Generalization!!!)I thank you all very much for the comments, especially those who got what I was going for: A JOKE! Thank you to the following: goddess and duchess for that little joke, I never actually thought about it like that and got a nice little kick when I read it. John, I agree agree with you whole-heartedly Europa, I appreciate you not taking it personally because I am, of course not serious (about any anger or looking down on vegetarians that i may have implied) otherwise I wouldn't have put Sweeping Generalization (and still put the SG in there) and Maddox as a source (as cool as he may be) Jia, you are quite right about the difference between the two, but "eating better" isn't necessarily true wyomugs i loved your pun and agree with your viewpoint Leticia, great story, hopefully your sister took it to heart Traveller great response (i agree with 2 &3, 1 is your experience) Collector unfortuantely if you had read past "whine" you would've seen the joke and probably would've been done faster more

Resolved Question: What career would give me the most stable hours?

I am a single mom who needs to have a regular schedule. I am in college right now (adult student) and I have 16 years of retail experience (far from stable hours). I can't decide on my major (either Anthropology, English, Geography, or Philosophy) but I know that if I get an entry level job, it usually doesn't matter what major I had. Another question is what career would give me stable hours and an earning of at least $24,000 net? I have never made more than $12,000 even as a manager (typically got screwed in most of my companies) so I do view 24,000 as a great step in the right direction. Any advice? I would love a job that included research of some sort, I love research. more
