Resolved Question: Should I go away to college or save money at home?

Okay, this will be a bit long, but I think that is the best way to get a good answer for this. I'm 17. I'm about to be a senior in high school. My school has what is called "dual enrollment" (I'm not sure if this is offered in other states). Basically, a student is able to take a course at a community college instead of at the school and the school pays for it. Most students do about 1 course, but I am doing 4. So that means I go to high school for 2 hours in the morning, then leave and take my college courses 4 nights a week like normal community college classes. I've heard this looks pretty good for colleges. Plus, I will be getting 13 college credits this semester and probably 12-14 next semester. I have also earned up to 6 credits through AP classes so I will have about 30 credits before leaving high school. The problem is, the AP credits will be towards government and english. The other credits will be for anthropology, nutrition, medical terminology, and sociology... I'm not sure of my major yet, so I don't know how many of these credits will apply. After senior year, should I go to college or take my math, science, history, etc... general credits at community college and transfer? Or should I got to a nearby smaller university where I can live at home? I have a 3.7, but I don't know if I will be able to get a scholarship. My parents can't afford to help me pay for college. I make about $700 a month, but I pay for my cell phone bill and food, clothes, etc.(I don't go shopping every weekend or anything like that, just saying I have basic expenses.) So I know going to a university will be hard to afford. Also, I don't know what major I am interested in, so I don't know if I should go to a university yet. At the same time, I feel like I would be missing out. I kinda want to have the typical college life. You know, roommates and dorms, parties, etc. The social aspect of college too. I would love to go to a big university or maybe even out of state. I really would like to move out and be more independent too. Thank you for reading. Please give me some advice, I will choose a best answer. :) more

Resolved Question: TEENS: Inexpensive and Low quality, or Expensive and Highquality?

So teens, recently I have been buying more and more high quality clothing that is unfortunately more expensive, so i cannot buy in bulk. My question to you all, is: Would you rather get lots of clothes for a low price that don't last long. (eg: Forever 21, H&M) or Would you rather have less clothes with a higher quality and price? (eg: Barneys New York, Anthropology) As I said earlier, now that I have stopped growing, I find it nicer to buy clothes that will last a while, not just a couple of monthes.Johnny R.- I understand that it may sound like there are no high or low quality clothes, but it is not the material that is high or low quality, it is the make of the clothes. I have buttons fall off my forever 21 clothes all the time, but my J crew jackets have never needed a repair. To another answer, i just find Abercrombie and Fitch, and Hollister tacky and generic... but thats just my opinion, more

Resolved Question: Can someone PLEASE edit my career paper!?

Forensic means pertaining to law. The earliest proof of forensics is BCE(Before The Common Era). Evidence of fingerprints in paintings and rock carvings were found. (Bureau of labor statistics.) Forensic scientists help to convict criminals by analyzeing the evidence that they receive from the police and or field agents. Fingerprinting is one of the most used techniques used to find out who was at the crime scene. There is a lot of fingerprinting involved in forensic science. Fingerprints help to find out who was at the crime scene. If the forensic scientist has the weapon they can also find out who held the weapon. Forensic scientists can also find out if someone shot a gun by testing clothing and hands for gun shot residue. There are a lot of abilities needed to work in this field. One is to have perseverance, another ability needed is you have to enjoy math and science, and you also have to be organized. Perseverance is when you follow through with something even if there is little or no hope of it working. You need this because you might not suspect a person of doing something, but then you discover that they did do it. You have to enjoy math and science because math and science are big parts of forensic science. You must also be organized, If you are not organized you will probably eventually be fired. You must also not be disgusted by dead human bodies because you are usually required to watch an autopsy before you start to work. Higher education is a must to succeed in this field even at the high school level. In high school you might want to be in chemistry, anatomy, and biology classes. You must have at least a bachelor’s degree in science, chemistry, biology, physics and or physical anthropology just to be a beginner. There are over thirty-one colleges and universities that offer a bachelor's degree in forensic science. (BLS) The education may cost a lot but student loans may be used. Or you could go to a community college which costs much less. An example position as a forensic scientist would be at Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS) in Norfolk Virginia. NCIS deals with murders or mysterious deaths of Naval personnel. The daily schedule of a forensic scientist is to record and analyze data. After the data is analyzed the scientists record the data and then report it to the field agents. The responsibilities of a forensic scientist are to get the data in on time and to get the data correct. The job opportunity of a forensic scientist is expected to increase due to the judicial system's continuing need for corroborating evidence in prosecutions (BLS). Job opportunity will be better for professionals who have an advanced degree or certificate in forensic specialty such as DNA. They will be better because people want smarter people working for them. If I worked as a forensic scientist at NCIS in Virginia I would live somewhere near Norfolk in Virginia. There are other NCIS locations all around the world but I would want to work at the Virginia location because Virginia is very beautiful. The cost of housing would not be bad because if you work at NCIS they sometimes pay for some of your house. At NCIS they let you use a government issued car for as long as you work there so transportation is not an issue. There would not be any special requirements with housing or transportation. You are required to use the government issued car at crime scenes, but that is really the only requirement with transportation. The work environment of a forensic scientist would be in a lab. You might have an assistant , or you might be a lab assistant. People would constantly come down to your lab to drop off evidence and to find out the results of the tests they had you run. The lab would include many of tools including a mass spectrometer, finger print scanners and many more tools. It would be a very fun work environment because you get to work with people. Also it could be kind of scary because some of the evidence might scare you. In 1998 the starting forensic scientist made from $20,000- $40,000 a year. Experienced crime lab professionals earned about $40,000- $85,000 and some lab directors earned as much as $100,000. The salary of a forensic scientist is excellent. It is very excellent if you are a lab director. But to be a lab director it requires more school. Being a forensic scientist can be very rewarding. You can earn a lot of money and also have a lot of fun. You have a lot of fun because you can help people, and you build bonds with the field agents and sometimes become friends. A career in forensics is fun but a lot of work is needed to be a forensic scientist. In conclusion forensics if fun, rewarding, and not a very boring job. more

Resolved Question: Do we still stereotype/ show prejudice?

I took an anthropology class this semester and it really got me thinking. I am 50% Hispanic (PR) and 50% Caucasion (Irish). I went to Catholic School up until now (junior year) In St Rose I was constantly critisized for not being "black enough" to wear the clothes i liked and were comfortable wearing. (Supposedly they were black people cloths) I grew up in a mixed area though and my brother and sister are black and hispanic and i hang around them and their friends which is why i act the way i do. I also hear people say hes white he cant be hood. But a white person can be just as "hood" as a white person. I personally think it depends on the area you grow up in. I dont know why i am rambling on and on and on but listening to this everyday just gets to me. To be honest i havent heard one comment in my new school (neptune prodominatly black school) about how i dress. Sre they more cultured/ understanding? im not sayin one race is right or wrong but it just really makes me upset how i cant dress the way i want without having white people and ruby tuesdays looking at me funny when i go in with my black friends. So i guess i answered my own question but i would like some of your comments. Do you think it exists? where? why? is it right? wrong? justified? thank you.1. im not fuckin mexican im i said im PR theres a mother fuckin difference. its people like you that piss me off 2. i felt like putting my biography is that okay? dont answer than3. go head' kev i dont mind. You my friend are a complete and utter moron. You are far beyong ignorant. I would venture to say your IQ is around the freezing point of water. Mexicans actually have different words that mean different things. If you say one word in the dialect in which PRs speak you could be cursing in Mexican. While it is the same general language (Spanish) it is all not the same. And what is with you and tacos? Just because you find a taco shop in PR doesnt mean we are Mexican. I can find a mcdonalds in Ireland doesnt make them american does it? No. So how about you graduate elementary and educate you dull mind. And the taco wasnt invented in mexico it was invented in europe. You are young and naiveMadrid is in Europe. LMFAO I no longer have to explain myself to you. Your just plain ignorant. more

Resolved Question: Could there be an indigenous race of people yet undiscovered by the rest of the world?

Is it possible that there is a small undiscovered tribe of people, perhaps in the Amazon Rainforest, utterly cut off from all other races of humans, who have never seen or met any other human than those in their own tribe? A race of people who have never supped the nectar of Coca-Cola, and don't appear on Facebook? I once watched a documentary of a tribe barely known to civilization, living a fully sustainable life in the Amazon. One of the tribe members was invited to a major city in the USA (New York? I forget now). As you can imagine, he was fairly startled to see the huge cityscape and concrete jungles, electricity, clothing habits and strange etiquette. But the one thing he was most amazed by was the not anything built by man or by his customs, but by a visit to the zoo, encountering animals from across the globe he had never encountered before. That was the biggest revelation for him. Well, I've been rambling. Anthropology section, I'd love to hear your thoughts.Brooker&me: LOL. You're a meany.KYLE S - good info. Thanks. Resolved Question: my paper..just need to save it =)?

Corinne Morgan Mrs. Porter English 3CP Period 1 10 March 2009 Jonah’s Gourd Vine: A Critical Analysis Zora Neale Hurston was born in Eatonville, Florida. When Hurston turned fourteen she left her hometown to work as a maid and traveled with Gilbert and Sullivan theatrical troupe. She entered Howard University in 1923, and shortly after she published her first short story in Stylus, which was the university literary magazine. After winning a scholarship to Barnard College in New York City in 1925, she studied anthropology under one of the most renowned anthropologists of the era Franz Boas. She continued her studies with Boas after graduating in 1928 at Columbia University. Being in New York and becoming involved in the Harlem Renaissance, she established friendships with other important black authors and published short stories. Hurston founded Fire!, with other black writers and Langston Hughes. She returned to her hometown for folklore, after having the assistance of fellowships and a private grant from a New York socialite interested in “primitive Negro art.” The result of the anthropologic field that Hurston has, she wrote Mules and Men. What the teller calls “lies“, is the folklore, which this story includes. Voodoo practices are mentioned and described in the story. The information on folklore practices were praised by critics of that time. Hurston’s first novel was Jonah’s Gourd Vine, which was published in 1934, combined her knowledge of folklore and biblical themes. John was an adopted son of a shift-less, scam-prone sharecropper that treated him very well. His biological father was a white plantation owner, where he worked and flourished. He was treated better with his adopted family than he was at his actual home. It was made sure that John had new clothes and an education. John became beyond his own control, and was compared to the gourd vine and eventually withers like it in the end. He was young man who loved too many women for his own good. Being a victim of this, he falls in love with a girl named Lucy and ends up being with her for as long as they live. She was loyal to John even when he was unfaithful to her. When he was being hot-headed, she was calm and patient with him and understanding. Eventually, John finds himself preaching at a Florida congregation, and despite his indiscretions, he was doing a lot better than he thought. Even after becoming the popular pastor of Zion Hope, his sermons and prayers for cleansing rouse the congregation's fervor where there, and then John has to confess that though he is a preacher on Sundays. He considers himself as a sympathetic portrait of a man and his community. In the future, John and Lucy have seven kids, and they live a happy life. Later in life, Lucy dies and John is just like Jonah and his “protection shield” is down that she had provided for him. John has realized that faith, tolerance, and good intentions cannot resolve the tension between the spiritual and the physical. What I should like to conclude wit is the hypothesis that one reason Zora Neale Hurston was attracted to the scientific conceptualization of her racial experience during the late twenties and early thirties was its prima facie offering of a structure for black Folklore (Hemenway 212). Unquestionably, Their Eyes Were Watching God is the prototypical Black novel of affirmation; it is the most successful, convincing, and exemplary novel of Blacklove that we have (Jordan 6-7). It might first seem natural for a preacher’s daughter to meet up with emotional difficulties when moving from Christianity to African derived Hoodoo (Southerland 25). Here in [“Jonah’s Gourd Vine”] there springs, with validity and vitality a fresh note which, to this commentator, is unique. As a matter of fact, not even excepting Langston Hughes, it is doubtful if there is any literary precedent for the particular type of accomplishment that characterizes “Jonah’s Gourd Vine.” (Hurst 7) The author’s treatment of whites is as natural and without change of key as it would need to be if she is to succeed in keeping universality the dominant note of her book (8). “Jonah’s Gourd Vine” can be called without fear of exaggeration the most vital and original novel about the American Negro that has yet been written by a member of the Negro race. No amount of special knowledge of her subject, however, could have made “Jonah’s Gourd Vine” other than a mediocre novel if it were not for Miss Hurston’s notable talents as a storyteller (Wallace 6-7).sorry. guess i didnt expect comments but uhm the paper isnt finished yett.duhh. thats whyy i saved it so i can print it off else where more

Resolved Question: Is this t-shirt at all offensive?

http://www.bustedtees.com/vivalaevolucion Witty clothing slogans usually don't appeal to me, but I'm an anthropology major and the evolution joke on this shirt appealed to me, so I got it. But after I did, I started thinking that perhaps the t-shirt's meaning could be interpreted as an insult of Che Guevara. Thoughts? If you were (or are) a Che fan, would you be offended at seeing it? There are a lot of people on my university campus who love him, and I wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings if they think I'm likening their personal hero to a primate.Digitally remastered: Haha, I agree. more

Resolved Question: Fashion and Visual Anthropology - any ideas?

I'm doing a photographic project for a visual anthropology course and I'm thinking of doing it about clothing and adornment as a means of expression but that's obviously v weak!! I'm thinking of stopping people in the street if they dress interestingly or impeccably (judged by my standards :-S) and then asking them questions and also, or more importantly, asking others about this person's style or mode of expression..... I should have tested the field yonks ago tbf but I'm a last minute type of person; last minute being 6 weeks and counting this time round, which is grand for me! Thinking of bringing in archival work and possibly speaking about post-modernism and it's possible representation and development in fashion (:-S!) and also the importance of 'performance' and how it varies by person, let alone age group, 'sub-culture' or regionality/ethnicity.... GAH, I've rabbitted a lot here.... Any suggestions are desperately welcomed and applauded! PLEASE HELP! p.s. I'm trying not to make it sociological and so don't reeeally want any stats or too much classification (e.g. sub-cultures and generalisations and whatnot.....). Tbf, anything will do! I just need a direction!! p.p.s. ANY CRITIQUE AND/OR OTHER IDEAS DESPERATELY WELCOME!! Danke schon :D more

Resolved Question: I have this friend who i am very fond of...?

I'm Filipino, and I have questions and something to share to you. I hope you have the patience to read it. I have this Persian friend who I am very very fond of. Her name is Sep. She's an Interior Designing student. By the way, I'm a Civil Engineering student. Today in school, we sat in our classroom beside each other (we're classmates in Anthropology Class). We were talking about her inability to understand or speak Filipino fluently. I said to her "You should really ask your boyfriend to teach you Filipino" (her BF is Filipino Iranian). When she heard what I said, she frowned in dismay and became slightly irritated by the matter. Then after the class, we went to the next class but the prof was not yet in, so we hanged out in the lobby. We were both silent, then she suddenly asked me about my chatdates. I told her that my chatdate-mates from Iran and Pakistan (I don't know what to call them) haven't replied to me since last week and I was disappointed. She said to me that Persian girls are like that. They are very playful in relationships because they can't get faithful boyfriends. She said that Persian men generally are always after sex. So I asked her, is she the "typical" Persian girl she said. Sep said no. She only had two BFs. The first one was lame. Her second is her present BF Ali. I asked her if she's virgin. She said no and Ali popped her cherry, much to my dismay. I told her that she gave her cherry to Ali so she must really love him, but she said that was before. Sep actually had sex with Ali due to his insistence and she thought that he was so loyal to her that she accepted anyways. But that all changed after Ali got what he wants from her. Now she doesn't F'n love the guy. I was surprised because they have been together for three years now. She said that they are together till now because her father works under Ali's father, and the two are friends, and she's afraid that Ali's father would be angry and fire her dad. The other reason is that Ali took her virginity, so he can't break up with him (some kind of stereotypical woman thing). I told her that she should not think of that and if a man loves her, he wouldn't care if she's virgin or not. I really like Sep but his BF really is the wall. She wants to break up with his BF and I really want her to (of course I would). They broke up many times but due to his apologetic skills plus reasons I mentioned above, she keeps on forgiving him. She said she was hoping that Ali would change for the better but he keeps on coming back to his old stinkin' ways, which really makes Sep angry. She said that Ali is not providing the love that she needs. He is not romantic and not helping her whenever she has problems, instead making it even worse by scolding her. He insists Sep on wearing conservative clothes while he can wear anything. The list of the the stinking things Ali showed to her is so long I would not even include it here. So my questions are this: Should I show my affections to her and then increase the degree gradually through time? If yes, how would I show it? What topics do girls of today like? I need any good advice you can give to me. We are really open to each other, maybe because I spend time knowing her thoughts and emotions and everything about her. I am really open to her. It's like baring my soul to her as if I have nothing to lose. We normally talk about the things we did before we see each other in classes, but conversations go deeper drastically whenever we converse about our personal thoughts, emotions, opinions, and other intangibles, to the point that some of our most personal secrets are revealed. We just contrast in interests. I love math, physics, social science, religion, philosophy, archaeology etc. She loves drawing, art, fashion, architecture, dance, PE, designing, etc. We only have chance to talk whenever we see each other in the University. I dared not show my feelings nor talk to her via phone for no reason at all because I thought her relationship with Ali was strong (three years dammit). My parents also discourage me from dating rich girls because they say I wouldn't keep up with the girls' lifestyle. She also said to me that she wants to date someone to finalize his breakup with his BF. I want to be that guy who will replace that Ali. I don't care if Sep's not virgin. That's a superficial matter. I just want to show my love to her. Resolved Question: Can you live a double life

I have been married for 5 years and I am extremely bored. My only excitement in life is going out and leading a double life. Yes a double life as a pick up artist. It has taken many months of preparation to get where I am today. I have sculpted my body, fixed my bad posture, whitened my teeth and have even taken vocal lessons. Next I have read books on social interaction, hypnosis, and anthropology. Finally I hired a personal clothing stylist to outfit me with the latest fashion trends. Being tall, dark, handsome, and well spoken I have a hard time not interacting with the opposite sex. When I go out I go alone to number close and kiss close as many women as I can. My question is what night is best to go out on?It works. Trust me, it does. more

What does Jules' mother do to her body and clothing to be more attractive? 10pts to anyone who can answer these! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Where is the make-up gene/hormone?

I'm always told that some of the stereotypes about men and women are natural and biological. Like something about women predisposes them to wearing make-up, high heels, etc. And then I suppose men would be predisposed to wear loose fitting clothes, flat shoes, no make-up and cut their hair short. I study anthropology which deals with a good bit of biology, being that it is the study of human beings. But I have yet to find the make-up hormone or gene. Being that some people in this section know so much about this topic. Could someone please tell me where it is?Jon, I'm not asking what would make a woman want to wear make-up. That's clear. I'm saying that it's not exclusively biological. It's a bit of a stretch. Besides the concept that beauty differs across different cultures. We can bend anything to fit biological tendencies, after all the very fact that we can think at all is biological. Rape and abuse can result from jealousy, jealousy is biological. Then is it biological to rape someone? That's pretty gray. Let's ask instead, is it going against nature if you don't rape and abuse women? That was the point. Women that don't wear make-up or men that DO wear make-up aren't unnatural for doing or not doing so.btw jon, what's your beef with anthropology anyway? And are you stalking me? It's okay if you are, admiration is always fun, I'm just curious.Jon, it's pretty clear that you've just got a chip on your shoulder but I'll forgive you, being that it's probably just a biological response to your prenatal masculinization.Jon, Where did I say that some behavior was unnatural? And what did I say was unnatural? I think in your bio vs. anthro battle you seemed to have missed the point entirely and you're just out for blood.Aww Jon, I like you. You make me laugh. I don't even mind that you're stalking me. more

Resolved Question: Fashion advice??

I'm very fashionable, and I make some of my own clothes, but I was curious to see what you guys would come up with for me in terms of outfits for school. I like to get pretty dressed up, not necessarily fancy, but I put thought into my clothes. I'd call my style "girly-funky" and I like unique stuff. Favorite stores: urban outfitters, forever 21, american eagle (on a laid-back day), heritage 1981, anthropology... I like to mix really cute pieces like...a dark purple draped top, black skinny jeans and bright yellow peep toe heels. (except I usually don't wear heels to school). Links are appreciated! Thanks!I should probably rephrase, since I wrote a lot. Please make me an outfit that you think fits my style that I could wear to school! more

i think i got that "indie" style everybody raves about (except i've always been this way) (clothes i.e.: anthropology, american egale, fossil, gap, what ever looks good on me) face/hair wize, i go for the raw, natural look (but i do wear make up. just not in an overdone way). i'm an art girl. my friends are a variety. none of us look/act the same. i LOVE classic rock and folk rock and all kinds of rock. (ie: queen, aerosmith, red hot chili peppers, bob dylan, allanis morrisette, the beatles, modest mouse, etc.) http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/6112/allpictures170ms5.jpg http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/1130/20070902new0047fv0.jpgim from the us. im straight edge. ...is there a "normal" subculture?
